Some will. Some won’t. Things like the eel grass, certain milfoil and water lilies need to be submerged. Even the bacopa can grow underwater. But most are just for the margins wet roots, dry top.
In the US, bare-root water lilies cost start at US$40 (currency conversion: £31.08 UK, or A$58.96, or €35.91 in July 2023) and easily go up higher to US$50 (£38.85 or A$73.71) and even US$60!
Thanks for your video! I have just built a pond on clay - can I take cuttings and divide straight back into the pond? Also in a temperate climate (UK) when is the best time of year to take cuttings and divide pond plants? Anna
Yes you can take cuttings, divide and place straight back into the water. Best time for cuttings for water plants is generally when they are actively growing. So you could take them now 👍. Division is generally done when plants are dormant. However I don’t follow this rule with water plants I divide them whenever.
Hi thank you so much for coming back to me so quickly. We haven’t actually planted anything yet. It’s a new pond surface is about 100 m2, the plan is to fill it over the winter with rain water. It’s on clay so we’re not introducing any gravel or anything else. Once full we want to plant directly into the clay. I’ve got a budget and I’m wondering if I am better buying many small bare root plants or fewer larger more established plants in pots? In time the plan is to let them mature and propagate for widest possible coverage. Thanks Anna
In Australia we have certain nurseries that specialise in re-establishing native vegetation. Often they have aquatic/ marginal plants. They sell these in tiny pots for reasonable prices. I wonder if something similar exists in the UK? If you only needed a few plants bigger and propagating can be quite cost effective. But your pond is not small. I’d stick with lots of small plants and the propagate your own as they mature 👍
I just divided some of my pond plants two days ago. I had a lotus that jumped the pot and sent out a big circle of stem with little root starbursts all around. I tried to pinch off above the water line and I have it in a kiddie pool with pond water, awaiting the completion of my next pond. I know lotus are picky about division and re-planting. It will be an experiment to see if I should have done this or not. Any experience with this, Kev?
