Introduction to Zeros for rifles
We look at the Zero for the AR15 rifle after having the rifle zero explained to us many times, I decided to simplify it to the way I picture it as many targets in a row all the way down range
PDF of this presentation:
gunwebsites.com/wp-content/upl...
Please feel free to use this in your class rooms if it will help with explaining rifle zero or point of aim
Zero = Point of Aim the same as Point of Impact on target at a distance
Popular AR15 Zeros:
25 yd
50 yd
100 yd
200 yd
300 meter
We are honored to have been asked for this presentation on rifle zero for use in police & military classrooms as well as hunter safety and junior shooter education programs. Thank you for your interest in our presentation on AR15 rifle zeros

I am retired LEO and an AR 15/ M 16 Rifle Instructor trained by THE NRA and The NJ Police Training Commission. I only say this so you will understand my feelings on you presentation. "OUTSTANDING". Hand outs and chalk boards can not touch this. The graphics and the simple break down in common language earns an A plus in my book.

I'm a LEO as well and agree with your analysis. I'm currently with our SWAT team and train vigorously on and off the range and I too found this to be a good presentation. How is your pension system doing these days ? I heard about the problems you guys are having and wish you well.

what zero would u recommend 25 50 or 100? i won't be shooting no more then 150yrds.
@dukeman7595
@dukeman7595 7 лет назад
100 yard zero will give you the best results. The differences are slight at 25 to 150, which puts you where you need to be. This is the range we use and it has worked out well for us, however, your needs may vary. Good luck..

Brilliant explaination as I have heard, do wish you spent more time on each target and chart after intial 25 yard one though, where this helps me is due to may lack of ling range shooing ranges, with 50 being all I have.
@charlesludwig9173

Fact: to enjoy the AR’s bullet drop compensation function you must zero for 300 meters, which can be done by sighting in at 25 meters since line of sight and point of aim will intersect twice, first at 25 meters and then again at 300 meters.

the best method is first identify the size of the kill zone, then the max distance you want to hit the kill zone, then pick the flattest trajectory that hits the most kill zone targets out to your chosen distance, i myself perfer a no hold over trajectory for the simple reason that front sight can block view of where you need to hold, especially at long ranges but what really matters is what ever zero you choose its if you hit your kill zone wether you hold under or over knowing where to hold to hit your kill zone, shooting air rifles also for most of my life having a dozen different velocities, over 100 different pellets with different ogives and profiles and over 25 different grain weights, we air gunners know trajectory well because we have to, we have much more drop, lots of wind drift, we make more ballistic calculations for targets of many sizes, and other variables to deal with far more then center fire rifles wich gives us vast experience because we shoot alot being the cost is cheaper to do more tests, at the end of the day its all about hitting your kill zone out to your prefered distance despite your zero, if kill zone target gets hit every time with using more then one sight in then it doesnt matter, its all about making hits on kill zone never missing any out to your disired distance you choose, combat, plinking, competition and even extreme long range are all different from each other. in a imperfect world you can have flat shooting with out hold over nor long range shooting with out hold under, some where in a trajectory path you will have hold under and hold over depending on distance

So this makes me question my sights. If I’m using something like a m bus pro that’s adjustable on a 16” 1:7 what do I use as a zero that would most accurately represent the adjustments on my sights? It seems like using these different zeros would have a big impact on those adjustments.

Damn, I can't decide between zeroing in at 50 yards or 100 yards. 100 yards seems to have the most pinpoint accuracy at 200 yards and below, while a 50 yard zero gets you close on target up to 300 yards. I believe I'll go with 50 yards, as it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Because I don't think I'll ever be shooting 300 yards for fun, and with a 100 yard zero, target shooting at 200 yards and less would be easier to point and aim... but I can learn with 50 yards and then have an easier time at 300+ if the need arose. Thanks so much for this video. Quite possibly the best video I've ever seen on RU-vid, PERIOD.
@CountArtha

This is _extremely_ helpful. I was contemplating a 25-meter "battle sight zero," but since my local range only has 50-, 100-, and 200-yard targets it looks like a 50-yard zero would be just about perfect. Here in Florida we never shoot past 200 yards anyway.
@KingTesticus
@KingTesticus 8 лет назад
once again, whether you said so or not, this information proves the 50 yard zero is superior.

Thank you. I had previously zero at 250 yards to get the tight groups out to 250. Without a 250 yard range I've been shooting at 100 and looking for the hit to be about 2 inches high. I didn't even think about zeroing on the rising side of the trajectory. I can zero at 50 and get the same results without the guess work. Awesome video.

Very nice job on video. I'm prior Army and have my fair share of time behind the trigger and thinking back to basic training many many moons ago, I wish we had this way of teaching available at the time. Keeping things simple and easy to comprehend is proven to be the best way of teaching and the easiest way to learn and maintain what's being taught. Some think it's better to use big words and complicate things to make the class seem more professional. Great job guys.

Thanks so much for this video. Today I took my M4 profile AR to the range, and shot at 50, 100, 200, and 300 yds. I had previously zeroed it at 25 yards. Your trajectory graphs were in my mind as I shot, and helped me to understand what was happening. The 55 grain .556 at 300 yards was back to zero, more or less. Again, thank you.
@seikibrian8641
@seikibrian8641 2 года назад
* 5.56, not .556. Since that designation is in millimeters, .556 would be just over a half a millimeter in bullet diameter. You probably confused it with .223 caliber, which is based on the inch rather than the millimeter.

Most of my shots are sub 100 yards but I'd like to be able to poke out to 200 even if need be. I was planning on a 25yrd 0 but a 50 yard zero seems to fit the bill for my situation. Great video

So many people I used to shoot with just couldn't grasp the notion that the AR15 is better zeroed at 50 vs 100. But having 55 grain rounds and 65 grain rounds some in the same mag. Using a 66 yd zero puts me in a sweet spot with a human size target up to 300 meters without ajustments. If I want to get more serious I check my notes for the drop over distance with the grain of bullet nneing factored. It's a good habit to get into for serious shootings. To memorize your bullet travel rise and fall with muzzle velocity. Plus it impresses when you can say specifically how much the round will fall over the next 50 yards.

Check out the Santose Improved Battlesight Zero, and the Revised Improved BSZ or RIBZ system - which allows you to zero your AR at 25, 50 or 100 yards while still retaining the use of all of the standard range markings from 300-600 (or 800) meters on the AR rear sight. Invented by a Marine officer named Santose if memory serves....

In these examples, the sights are at the 0 point on the graph, the AR15 barrel is sometimes 3" below the sights / optics, so in these examples the bullet starts at a 3" drop from 0 The AR is like other rifles and the sights end up pointing down a bit, so when the sights are brought up to the target, the barrel is, in effect, pointing up a bit

My longer range AR is also an A3 but it's a spike's tactical with a nikon p-223 3-9x40 BDC 600 which is zeroed at 100 yards and works great with the nikon spot on app. it also has 45° irons that are zeroed for 50 yards. the free nikon spot on app is great even if you don't have a nikon scope. Just find one from the large list that is similar to your's. great video, thanks for reassuring my set up that I've been using for 7 years.
