ARB Jack

MLO's Tom Henwood does a blind unboxing and demo of the new ARB Jack. This hydraulically-actuated jack compresses down to 35" and extends to 56", with an effective lifting height of 6 - 48", and an intuitive operating method that we could figure out very quickly. Safe vehicle lifting still requires training and practice to understand inherent dangers, but the ARB Jack's pivoting base, hydraulic handle, simple lift arm and hydraulic lowering lever mitigate some of the dangers that make mechanical jacks so intimidating to operate, especially for physically smaller users. Add the ARB Jack Base to the system for load spreading and a stable platform on greasy or uneven surfaces.

Question: The provided instructions say not to store the ARB Jack on its side or it will leak. Yet they are all shipped on their side. They also are stored on their side at the distribution warehouse and in delivery trucks. Mine arrived covered in oil because of these reasons. Further, how are we to store the Jack outside the vehicle if it comes in a storage bag that is without mounting hardware and which causes one to assume that the Jack is to be stored IN the vehicle, where it almost always can only be stored on its side, because of its height? Why isnt there mounting hardware specific to the Jack, designed/sold by ARB that is 1) meant to be mounted on exterior and that, 2) incorporates theft resistant features (e.g. lockable hardware)? I'm in the states. These are very popular here but that is changing quickly. I just returned from the Overland Expo and my question above, includes the 2 most heard complaints about this product and are the reasons why so many are now turning to other products. The number 1 complaint however: storing this on its side should not allow oil to leak/this is a very poor design feature! I love ARB but this is money I'm now seeing that was poorly spent, due to an incomplete design and a lack of mounting options, which ARB should've addressed prior to releasing this product. ARB, please address these 3 things, or I fear ARB will see this products interest lose steam. ARB is a solid company but the mark was missed on this one big time.

Can I Change a flat wheel?

Good video. I've heard elsewhere on the internets that the jack must be stored vertically. Is this true? Or can it be stored laying flat?

They leak the oil when horizontal. Have 2 friends that bought them, 1 ruined his interior in his h1 wagon, the other guy made custom mount for roof rack and it leaked on the paint. He didn’t notice it because his sat unused for a month and it ruined his new paint job. The ‘rumors’ are true. ARB reply was the instructions said store it vertically. WAY too much money for something you cant just toss in the back and not worry about. Maybe wait for version 2.0 or 3.0 to come out when they redesign it. But it will probably cost $1400 then.

Do you need to have a front and rear bumper to use this, or would sliders work fine? Can this do anything more than just lifting the vehicle for changing tires?

woolengrappler You could definitely use this jack with a set of frame bolted or welded rocker sliders thanks to its pivoting base. Out on the trail this jack can also be used to lift the wheel out of a hole for bridging a gap, for example. As with any hydraulic jack it should always be used in combination with a jack stand or other fixed vehicle support before putting any part of your body under the vehicle.

MainLineOverland thanks! Does it need to be stored upright?

The Hi-Lift Jack is a very useful tool if you know how to properly and safely use it, and we still sell these at all of our locations. That being said, we have personally witnessed improper use which created extremely dangerous situations in remote areas out on the trails. Get educated, and be careful out there folks!

Would love to know how to get those center caps for the evo course wheels. Can I purchase those thru you guys?
@MainLineOverland

Ben Pitcher The EVOs with center caps are a whole different casting with more material to create the lip to hold the cap. On the plus side, the race wheels without caps are actually a bit lighter. 👍

Nice video. I have been running the Hi-Lift Xtreme 60" on my FJ along with Bomber Products shovel mount and a Krazy Beaver shovel. I am wondering how I would mount this to an ARB bumper, maybe just use the Hi-Lift bar by itself, some type of mount, as I would want to keep the shovel mount too. Or maybe it is best to just carry the new jack inside of the rig. pnw4runners.com/camping_trips/aug17/1.jpg

We also love Hi-Lift Jacks for their versatility and cheap durability--every crew should have at least one on hand. The Hi-Lift 60" is huge though, and most of the time that means keeping those big metal bits on the outside of the vehicle where they are prone to the elements, eventually sending rust droplets to the vehicle below. The ARB Jack is quick deploying and folds into a mostly cylindrical 35" shape, which means it is easy to keep this essential piece of gear inside the vehicle where you can maintain its functionality and value.

Don’t recommend putting it in the back. Your gonna have lots of mad customers not buying your other stuff when it leaks and ruins their interior. Do some research- it is happening more and more as the jacks get some wear and age. ARB says they are to be stored vertically when people turn in complaints of damaged interior or damaged paint when on roof racks. I like the idea and they are decent but need improvement. Have you seen ones with the broke lever on top yet? Seen pictures but didn’t show how they happened. I think a later version after improvements will be better- ARB is usually good for improving their stuff like the compressors, and refrigerators did.

Jimmx Jimmx The nice part is that the jack itself packs down into a carry bag and can fit on the inside of your vehicle. No more watching your investment rust out on a roof rack. 👍
