I must say: these burgundy coloured Grenson shoes are so beautiful and they came at such a give-away price, I would not have parted with them!

If you allow me the suggestion, you should make a video where you show different levels of wear on leather soles -- almost new, light wear, medium wear and where exactly would be the line for too much wear. I have not seen leather soles dozens of time evolve from brand new to being in need of being changed, so I can't tell what is good or acceptable wear besides the obvious cases where it's almost new or so broken the stitching is starting to get undone. Also, for the adventurous chap, RMRS has a video showing how you can reduce creases with a damp towell and an iron -- create steam with a bit of paper inside to reshape the leather. It's really impressive and it certainly would help selling at an even better price! Thanks!

In the USA most workers are paid every 2 weeks , so I would have ran the listing for 2 weeks. I would have tried to find a worse looking pair of shoes, the ones you picked looked really good when you opened the box! I was expecting much worse! I add shoes to my collection by using Ebay or thrift store finds. I recently ran across shoe restoration services offered by Kirby Allison and others who will offer to do a complete resole and restoration. I know this was about a quick flip and you did great in my opinion. I found an old pair of Florsheim Imperials that were pretty beat up and I purchased them and will send them out for a complete service and enjoy them for years to come. Keep up the great videos and I like to see your growing Rolex watch collection, it inspires me to get one.

There is nothing like a new pair of shoes. No scratches no creases, immaculate sole and clean interior. They give you confidence when wearing them. But like you said always look for discounts. I like your bran new loakes 1880 that you have bought so cheap on ebay.

Watching shoes being shined is almost as satisfying as shining them myself. Kirby Allison did a show, Sundays I think, where he would shine shoes with a guest and talk about dressing well, the equivalent of a kitting bee but for men (I cling to my stereotypes). I suppose I haven’t seen one for a while because the numbers weren’t good but I liked that I could participate. I like your arbitrage experiment. I may just try it to ratchet up to a first-rate pair.

The problem is, of course, that I can never seem to let the shoes I buy go. Ash has me addicted to high quality shoes. Edward Green, Church, C and J. I need to buy them in a size I don't wear.

Yes! Love this, I'm currently dyeing a pair of cheaneys for resale at the moment. I find dyeing a relatively low cost way of sprucing up a less desirable looking shoe for ebay... I've built a handy collection of C&J benchgrade and handgrade shoes with this method over my many years at uni. Great video, keep it up Ash!

Start now! As I write this, in early January, I am the proud owner of a black pair of Crockett & Jones ( in collaboration with Brooks Brothers) oxfords which I purchased from eBay for $25. We live in a world of uncertainty. All the more reason to follow Ash's advice and make this a priority.

I'd have kept those. A lovely pair of brogues for sub 25 quid. I want those burgundy burfords you have. Considering buying some light brown and getting a bit of dye on the go.

Great content man, I would like to suggest a topic, if I may. Being a foreigner and not having been to the U.K. I would appreciate it if you could do a sort of a tier rating of British shoe makers, as I've seen many shoe brands, but am not familiar with them. Something along the lines of what characteristics the brand has, most recognized shoe model, perception, category, price/quality ratio, if you would, I know its a lot, but any guidance is very much well received and appreciated.

Well, I can't say much about Jeffrey West and Oliver Sweeney, but with Gucci I'm sure you're paying for the name as well. I would try the second tier British manufacturers (and Made in Britain!) like Barker, Grenson, Sanders & Sanders, Alfred Sargent, Crown, Jadd.

How do you know the right shoe size when buying online without trying them?
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 2 года назад
Experience of the brands is always helpful, but usually the better quality shoes will fit 'true to size', so if you are a size 8, their size 8 should fit you very well.

Hello Ash! I’m always enjoying your shoe videos, and this was excellent! In the winter, how do you waterproof your leather boots from rain and snow? I’ve tried the usual method (like the one in this video) but the water and snow appears to penetrate through the leather and wets my feets after some time. Is it better to use some waterproofing? And do you do that before or after shining them?
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 2 года назад
For dress footwear, I just ensure there is a good layer of wax polish on the shoes. I try and avoid wearing dress footwear in the most extreme conditions, as they are ill-equipped for excessive rain, snow and the like (I swap to more practical utility boots for such weather conditions). It is possible to use additional waterproofing, such as Dubbin, etc. But these usually affect the look and 'shine' performance of the protected leather, so I personally avoid such treatments for my shoes.
@Carbon_steel_watches
@Carbon_steel_watches 2 года назад
@@TheChapsGuide But do you use other products for your utility boots?
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 2 года назад
@@Carbon_steel_watches Only a spot of Dubbin, great for adding a level of waterproofness.

Good film as always Ash. I've had a disappointing time selling on eBay in the past. Regarding your profit - how was it after taking the sale costs of the transaction into consideration. Such as the fees from eBay and Paypal. Also I think you said you included the shoe-tree with them - so this cost needs to be included too.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 2 года назад
This was a lie profit example, but every penny counts. I never include shod trees, I always ensure this is clearly indicating the item description. I’ve had a few big wins over the years, it’s always a fun activity though.
@JonathanHaughton
@JonathanHaughton 2 года назад
@@TheChapsGuide I think the skill you showed was trying to find a hidden gem. That’s badly listed and purchase for a low price. Then use your techniques to make the gem shine. I’ve previously been frustrated with eBay fees. You should do another using the profit from this to climb the shoe ladder.
@leonardgoffe7159

Interesting that you left the shoelaces on... also, how much would it be to replace the leather on the bottom and the rubber?
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 2 года назад
For a fully professional resole it is possible to send the shoes back to Grenson, or have them resoled with another specialist cobbler. This would cost in excess of £100, so its always best to buy shoes with lots of life left in the soles.

Aren't those Blake stiched, not Goodyear welted?
@iansoutryer3189
@iansoutryer3189 2 года назад
It says on their website that all their shoes are goodyear welted.
@cfajohnson5207
@cfajohnson5207 2 года назад
But it also says that they didn't always make them that way; in fact they started with cemented shoes. Visible stitching on the sole is typical of Blake stitched shoes.
@iansoutryer3189
@iansoutryer3189 2 года назад
@@cfajohnson5207 You are not quite right there. Visible stitching on the sole is a sign of both Goodyear welted AND Blake stitch. With the stitches of the Goodyear welted more to the outside of the sole, corresponding with the stitches on the welt. And Blake stitched more to the inside of the sole, corresponding with the stitches on the inside of the shoe. [There is however one exception to this rule: really good Goodyear welted shoes have "closed channel stitching", i.e. the stitching is buried within the sole and not visible on the underside. But that is only an exception. And with inferior footwear you sometimes find faux stitching. In reality they are cemented!]
