Historically, most bands tend to slip (even unintentionally, sometimes) into these trends. I sense like we were not ready to see Arcade Fire changing so much by almost sounding like everyone else. They have been productive, and they probably have all good intentions, and their hands are itching from how the perspective on outside might be different from theirs... but, all this, since Everything Now, just feels not so well thought. Neon Bible was released 15 years ago, yet, from the astounding album cover, to the variety of sounds and the creativity on the writing, it feels miles ahead than the latest Arcade Fire, almost as if the blood was much more eager to come out, and now, it just wants to stay inside. I think, once again, that the key point is intention. In the end, maybe the view from the band itself is just different than what the constantly-starving public sees. To the point where it almost feels like they are making a record for themselves, but trying to fit in, too.

it’s a tough call. both can dive deep into cringe, but i think EN is barely put over by the fact that i like the title track, put your money on me, and we don’t deserve love better than anything on WE. end of empire iv + unconditional i go toe-to-toe with the worst moments on EN and the really muted, unfocused production keeps other tracks (rabbit hole etc) from reaching their full potential

I'm buying what Arcade Fire is selling on this record. As always, the production is excellent and I feel the more electronic tunes are driven, emotionally and sonically, and there is a sense of being submerged into the world of the record in the first half. Somehow Win still resonates with me, and he manages to tell really vivid stories with general detail. The pacing is brisk and the varied sonic landscape leads to a pretty astonishing closer in WE. I get the feeling that Arcade Fire records will always age better than they're given credit for. They haven't really had a miss with me except on some specific cuts off of Everything Now. Yes the first half of their discography is better, but somehow this band is still 6 for 6 for me and I can't say that about nearly any other group.

I absolutely agree. I feel that people are so critical of Arcade Fire's newer discography because they produced three god-tier albums in a row. Yeah, not all of their music is going to be as great and ground-breaking as Funeral and The Suburbs but they don't need to be. If a band with mediocre discography produced AF's newer discography people would probably be much more receptive to it. In fact, I think that AF's later discography will age just as well as their first three albums.

I thought this was a great album and im ready to die on this hill. Very concise, thematically and musically. It doesnt have the highs of the suburbs or funeral obviously, but it annoys me that people just want the funeral part 2 or the suburbs part 2. This is a mature and softer approach from a band that is well into their career and i think that is more fitting than trying to recapture the same essence from 20 years ago.

Definitely agree. Arcade Fire is in a tough spot because if they decide to make an album that’s sounds like their earlier work, people will be upset over their sound regressing, but if they keep changing their sound they are at a risk of alienating their fans. I thought they worked around this really well on this album with songs that feel reminiscent of older albums while not being exact copies while also having songs that evolve their sound.

7/10 for me after first listen. I'm damn near 8.5 now. A few of these hit so different after a few listens. Not that I expect anyone who didn't like the initial listen to give it several chances - but it does pay off. Their past has NOTHING TO DO WITH this album. Idk why it's so hard for everyone - including Melon - to treat this record as it's own thing and grade it on it's own merit.

Their past absolutely does. Cause art isn’t created in a vacuum. Using the merits of past performance creates context to evaluate this album. Sure you can go in blind but when you’re a long time fan it’s impossible to separate past work when evaluating present work. And if they were more successful at creating and presenting compositions in the past, that’s a point of reference to judge one’s level of enjoyment on the current project.

If this was an unknown band's first album people would be shitting themselves. I realize expectations play an inevitable role here, but on it's own merit - this is wayyyyyy better than a fucking 4. It may not be (isn't) the 4/5 or 5/5 some publications have given it, but it's kinda wild how hung up Melon is on their past. Let it go, dude. You want them to leave certain shit in the past yet refuses to practice what he preaches. Is THIS ALBUM good or not. Not HOW DOES THIS STACK UP AGAINST THEIR OTHER ALBUMS? Which are historically significant. Meh!

I disagree with fantano but I felt this way on my first listen. Since then, every listen has grown on me more and more, now I love the record. This album shows the issue with rating Arcade Fire. Every dumb inexplicable line win says usually is jargon for an interesting concept, such as The Feeling from the Suburbs, and the term Reflektor from Reflektor, I believe I Unsubscribe is a similarly nuanced concept. Win's problem is that he makes you put together the idea and refuses to just say it. But holy shit is it rewarding when you dig into the meaning of his songs and sing them the way he sings it. I cry almost every time I listen Reflektor, or even Put Your Money on Me, yesterday it happened when I sang all the way through End of the Empire I-IV. Anyway good album, I think it deserves to be loved
@StyxTBuferd
@StyxTBuferd 2 года назад
I couldn't disagree more. I've listened to it a few times and Anthony more or less affirmed my exact take. This is lyrically some of the cringiest stuff AF has put out. "I/We/She Unsubscribe(s)" is not good, but neither is "Rabbit Hole/Plastic Soul" or "I can be your race and religion/You can be my body and soul". This album is just packed with bad lyrical ideas. It's very instrumentally confused as well- it's super weird that Anxiety I is a two parter with the second half being a synthpop instrumental, and then Anxiety II is... another synthpop instrumental? The track naming here is just very awkward. Lightning II was the only song I said I'd go back to on this thing.

Okay, I need to say it: I’ve never understood the hate towards ‘Everything Now’. Almost every song has splendid melodic hooks throughout, except “Signs of Life” being the only one I find a bit grating. But the rest is great fun to listen to - I’d usually be more happy to listen to that record twice than their others even just one time through. To say that this new one (where, like you, nothing much at all grabbed me) is quite like it’s predecessor does not compute in my head.
@StyxTBuferd
@StyxTBuferd 2 года назад
Most of Arcade Fire's songs have good melodies. Everything Now is just not good in almost any other capacity. The instrumental variety on that album sounds more like desperation for variety than it does genuine curiosity or respect (e.g. Everything Now is basically ABBA; the lift of dub influence for the energy devoid Peter Pan; I have no clue what the fuck is going on with Chemistry). The lyrics are so entrenched in the ironic self-fulfillment concept without shedding any light whatsoever on that concept for listeners to take home that it becomes exhausting before we even get to the real lowlights of the album (Peter Pan, both Infinite Contents). Some of the later, more elaborate tracks are fine (Put Your Money on Me/We Don't Deserve Love) but they don't exactly shine compared to the more textural and ambitious tracks of Funeral/Neon Bible, and they're too long. As far as instrumental connections to Reflektor, EN relies more on synthpop and dance instrumentals (EN, Signs, Creature, Electric Blue, Put Your Money on Me). The way I usually describe it is it's like Reflektor with only disc 1, with disc 2 of that album being so much higher quality imo.

IMO Reflektor holds up quite well in the current context of music-- I threw it on a few weeks ago and couldn't believe it got so much hate at the time of it's release. Reflektor just isn't that good of an album. It's better than the last two albums which Anthony even scored as but it's no where as good at their initial albums. Arcade Fire getting away from Indie rock wasn't an edgy move.....rock basically died off after 2010 and electronic was the 'in thing'.

I sense like we were not ready to see Arcade Fire changing so much by almost sounding and talking like everyone else. The young wants the revolution, the grown wants not to derail and lose it all. I think, once again, that the key point is intention. In the end, maybe the view from the band itself is just different than what the constantly-starving public sees. To the point where it almost feels like they are making a record for themselves, but trying to fit in, too.

I was really hoping the new Arcade Fire album "We" was not going to be a another 'Everything Now" - which was the first non-essential Arcade Fire album - but sadly the new album I spent the weekend listening too is pretty much in the same ball park. After the one-two-three knockout punch that was "Funerals", "Neon Bible" and "The Suburbs" (the Grammy's on a rare occasion getting the Album of the Year award right when they named "The Suburbs" the winner for 2011), I was feeling like this was the greatest f*cking rock band in the world. I even love "Reflektor" when I know it has its fair share of detractors. It does have some of their best songs ever on the album like Reflektor, After Life and We Exist, but it also has some of their worst like Flashbulb Eyes, Porno and Normal Person). "We" makes me sad to witness such a decline. It does seem like their best day are behind them. This album trips himself on the production side of things. There's almost no moment on the songs that lives to its full potential. You can see the reigns being taken to control the energy, instead of letting the momentum do the work, and that make WE look weak and unfulfilled, with a minimalistic production that doesn't fit Arcade Fire. I thought it was great. Even with a misfire on some of the lyrics, it developed nicely. I get that there is a literary component to this, but I think we’re increasingly leaning too heavily on lyrics and literal readings. Like saying “ugh, ‘I unsubscribe’ is the Win Butler doing the steve buscemi meme.” Is criticism that is almost as cringe as the lyric. Oscar Wilde can’t look! Think about this: Win Butler wrote that line knowing Fantano (and Fantano only) would roll his eyes. And he still wrote it and sung it because he felt it in some profound way. What Fantano does here: indulges in cynicism. He justifies his dislike by pissing on Dad pop poetry. Fantano is too interested in the meta, in the literal, and pretending it’s objectivism. And what is up with Americans getting their panties in a bunch about the fall of the American empire. It’s falling. Edit: and their influence here was Tom Petty. 1000%.
