SEGA Rally is one of the best driving games made by SEGA AM5.
This game has smooth graphics, distinct handling style and superb track design.
Thus due to the success of this game, it later continued to SEGA Rally 2, SEGA Rally 2006 (Includes the Arcade Version) and SEGA Rally REVO for the Consoles.
The Saturn Version ranked 44th out of 50 games in the Guiness World Records-Gamer Edition 2009.
This game has 2 cars to choose from : Toyota Celica GT-Four and Lancia Delta HF Integrale.
And a 3rd car that can be unlocked in the Saturn Version.
This game has 2 endings:
-Player not able to finish extra stage (goes to credits showing the track environment.)
-Player finishes the Extra Course (Award Ceremony and a quick replay of your driving.)
So, I used both cars and both ended up with different endings.
Looks like I have to train more on Lancia, because it has a tighter Handling (Grip) compared to Celica.
A small turn on the steering wheel doesn't really turn much to me, making me struggle in the game.
I can cut almost all of the corners with ease on Celica, although the length of the car is long.
I almost can't finish the extra stage even with Celica, took me a few days to get back on track. -

Looking at this shows what an amazing job Sega did with the Saturn version really. I never realized how close they actually are!!!
@ritter_cracker

I actually think the saturn version is better. It has way better sound and so much more entertaining physics. The only downside is the resolution and detail of the graphics.
@Larry
@Larry 10 лет назад
kimgulle Yeah, the music is astounding on the saturn, but then again it's CD music. But the details are really down to the Saturn's issue with not being able to do translucent graphics, like that weird mesh it has for windows on the car etc.

You know there's already a great arcade port of this game for PS2. If you have a modded PS2 you can just find the image and put it on CD. If you don't have one then get the japanese PS2 and Sega Rally 2006 box set.

Back then, it was quality over quantity. If the game had more tracks there's a good chance it wouldn't have been nearly as fun to play. They say less is more (whoever 'they' may be) and I think this game is a good example of that.
@DiegoRuiz1991
@DiegoRuiz1991 3 года назад
For reference, the Papyrus racing games of the time (guys that would eventually make NR2003 and iRacing) didn't have 3D physics. Tracks only had VISUAL elevation changes but cars would never go off the ground no matter the terrain or impacts.

Was just playing this again, I loved playing this on the Saturn as a child. Did College work on it and even spoke to people involved in the game's development. I am amazed that the AI can race like Packs when forced to even though it's not as advanced as Daytona USA's AI. I'm hoping "Over Jump Rally" becomes a decent remake and SEGA will give the developer their blessing. I know Kenji Sasaki and Kenneth Ibrahim have given it their blessing.

I love arcades so so much as I kid but I was just too young to miss them almost entirely. By the time I was old enough to know really know what I was doing in video games all the old arcade machines had broken down and disappeared. So heartbreaking, I'd gladly give up consoles for the atmosphere of the arcade.

I still remember owning the Saturn port of the game, and almost exclusively drove the Celica. And I also remember that I never made 1st place in my many playthroughs, but I still had a good time with the game, and I still remember that I flipped my car over at least once every run. Fun history fact: For a game that was made in 1994 showcasing the 1995 WRC, one can argue that the game did not age well owing to what happened between the Toyota team during the 1995 season. Also, it may be just me, but the car in 3:38 looks almost exactly like the Subaru WRX. And if that is, that is a nice Colin McRae cameo even if it is accidental (and it would be funnier since he ultimately won the 1995 WRC).

Sega really should've just made the Saturn a miniaturized home version of the Model 2 arcade board. At least they did basically that with the Dreamcast and Naomi.
@ArcadeStriker
@ArcadeStriker 8 лет назад
+WKZworks Well, surely it wasn't really easy to do with Model 2 technical stuff and specifications (It wasn't like the NeoGeo which was a 2D system, it was a full fledged 3D arcade board) and mostly the different controller schemes of many games. Also it was 1995 so it was pretty much really hard to do something like that (More considering the year) but Saturn still was pretty powerful, being really stellar more with 2D rather than 3D. But yet the Saturn still got some decent ports (Both versions of Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter 2 and Sega Rally) and a decent catalog of decent games. The Dreamcast was released after NAOMI and was inferior to the arcade board yet, but It could get some really good graphics due to the advanced hardware and the much closer proximity of Dreamcast to the NAOMI. Also there was before Model 3 Arcade Board, which most of their games got ported to the Dreamcast.
@RaptorZX3

except for Daytona USA 2, that would have been awesome for it to be ported on Dreamcast...but it never got ported officially outside of arcade.

Back when we didn't give a crap about fps..

even Daytona USA was keeping stable high FPS, so this comment is a little irrelevant

Actually we did care about fps. The home port of this game on the Sega Saturn was advertised as being an incredible 30 fps. Only arcade hardware was capable 60 fps at that time. Arcade 3D games mostly ran at 60 fps back then and looked amazing compared to home consoles. That changed with PS2/Xbox/Dreamcast.

+Baa! it's ok, but the image counters are skewed with the new tools. It's as if you were recording a movie with your camera in 60hz a TV screen of a game that only shows 30 in reality and voila, hence the impression of mummy responsiveness in games, even in 4k, they are soft for most. The question is not to say that they ruin the old video games to the detriment of the new ones because they have less fps, whereas technically it is false, the physical engines being much smaller, they turned much better, the 2D also, unstoppable speed, compared to any game of the moment on a flat screen, besides why the upscaler performers are so expensive?, And you will inherit additional latency. As long as it's in the line of code, the engines turned "round", the sound effects (very important) were encoded at the same time as the phases of gameplay, it changes everything about the game design, and the final impact on replayability. The last ones to use these techniques for the sound, are the am # 2 games (especially Fighting Vipers), if you pay attention to camera angles, and other sounds depending on the scene and the shot taken after the stopwatch. They still have everything to learn from the arcade, you find them too demanding these young people, I do not find them enough critical precisely.

Erm everyone was obsessed with mythical 60fps back then. Always was gutted this was 30fps on Saturn. Even on Dreamcast they robbed us with SEGA Rally 2 at 30fps! I was devastated when I discovered it was only 30 😂

Frames per second or first-person shooters? If you meant the latter, that makes more sense as the market seems to be running out of ideas. If it’s the former, frames per second have always mattered.
