Thanks for the review, I just bought one and I am SOOOOOO damn excited for it to arrive. I've wanted one of these babies for over a year now and I finally have the money for one
I love mine, amazing game selection, beautiful screen, great options, love the subtle scanline option. I’ve got small hands I guess cause the sides of the CP do not bother me at all. I don’t tend to play close to my cabs when I’m standing and I’m 5’9. The fact that everything is too tight on the CP is indeed an issue when playing with someone, it’s for couples or bromance! 😃 Great review, precise, clear and covers the good and the bad and you’re 100% objective, thanks MichaelB!
This was the first cabinet my wife bought. She is quite happy with it. She plays Mortal Kombat, Joust and Gauntlet. I pointed out the flaws on the cabinet, but none of them bothered her.
Thanks for the review. I am just getting in to building a home arcade with arcade1up and your videos are invaluable as to which ones to choose. Thanks!
Flaws topic...if you dont like the deck ridges, get some half inch clear soft tubing cut to length the cut a line down the tube. Should friction fit right over the ridges and no more sharp edges and rubbing off red trim color. Doesn't look tacky either in my opinion. I did put a 5inch extension riser (ebay) on bottom with a diamond pattern sheet metal front. Perfect height for me now at 5'10". Couldn't resist and added Tulsa Arcade riser front with LED too. With all that in mind it is now a permanent toy furniture item in the house. Definitely top 5 cabinet for me. Star War yoke and pinball, TMNT. Time Crisis will be #5 if they ever get around to it. My modern racing sim knocked Outrun out of the available furniture space. Pac Man and Air Hockey my wife claims so they are going no where lol.
Michael B, I just got my Midway Legacy, the Defender edition, and thought I'd let you know about the improvement Arcade1up made to it. They raised the control panel so it's flush with the sides, so your hands no longer hit a raised edge. I don't know if you'll get this variant in Canada, but if you do, it might just be an upgrade :) It still suffers from the line of site that the Mortal Kombat variant does, but like you, I did get a riser for the riser :) Have a great day! vgv
The Midway games are owned by Warner Bros. They won’t allow the original MK arcade side art. I think due to royalty disputes with the Johnny Cage arcade actor with Midway a long time ago.
I found this at Wal-Mart for $299. Totally worth it at that price. The speakers are great, it sounds awesome! I actually don't notice any problems with the display at all. I'm also 6'1" and I find it it to be so short at it's natural height that I need to sit down or on my knees anyway, but I've looked at it at all directions and it all looks good to me. The controls are definitely a little tight, but I haven't had a problem. I also got it for my kids, and it is a bit more kid sized. Although I saw a stand sold next to it that raises it up a little bit. It was easy to put together, which shouldn't be over looked. It looks phenomenal! The controls also feel and function great. Great array of games is great too; rampage, root beer tapper is so much fun, and the controls are fun too, defender is great, paper boy is a great classic. I haven't tried the others yet. Totally recommend it at that price. I'm actually jealous and wish i had one for myself.
Unfortunately all these cabs have small arrow control panels for 2 player adults. Im surprised more people dont complain about that since the beginning so it can be fixed to a more wider size.
They already had the license for the mk2 art. They can't use the mk1 artwork due to wb not owning the rights to it. Daniel pesina (johnny cage in mk1 and 2) actually sued midway back in the day and owns the rights to the shot on the side art of mk1. That's why in mk3 to present any kind of official mk1 arcade merch, re-releases or even in game scenes (like the mk3 liu kang arcade drop fatality) features just the giant dragon on the side without cage. Carlos pesina (Daniel's brother and aka raiden in mk1/mk2) is still with the mk team (now known as netherrealm studios). I'm sure arcade1up could have came up with a substitute of some kind but it wouldn't have been the same. However I would have loved some mk3 side art. I'm really wanting a mk4 release but doubt that will ever happen. 😫
Thanks for this review! We're thinking about adding this cabinet to our collection and I was excited to see Root Beer Tapper and Paperboy are included.
Hi thanks im a subscriber. Does the walmart midway legacy edition come with a riser ? Also does it have Wifi ? Ithink it was originally $315. Thanks. Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.
Saw this one come up for sale on the A1up site, so I went ahead and ordered it. I had held out for Defender 40th, and Joust, until I learned those had TN monitors. Oh, get yourself a couple of fridge dollies for the capcom, and Midway cabs, if you still have them. I put my Capcom legacy on one, and it's much better. I'm only 5.7-ish, but even I didn't like how low it set. The dollies are only 20 bucks a pop, so, not a hard decision. Thanks for the review.
3:41 Raiden's haunting the Outrun cab. Thanks for the honest review! with it's price combined with my height you just saved me from an expensive disappointment.
just ordered this MK legacy cabinet from best buy this past weekend and can't for it to be delivered by the end of the week. MK arcade machines were some of my favorites to play at the malls in the nineties along with nba jam which i also just bought a few weeks ago and cruisn usa
Thanks for your review! Are the moves/fatalities, combos easier/harder to pull off on this Arcade1 up vs say the real arcade game? Controls decent or do you recommend upgrade the joystick/buttons?
Would you recommend this as an upgrade to the original rampage cab? I love the cabinet, but if the emulation/form factor is better here, it sounds like it could be a good value given the additional games
Personally I love this cab. Is it perfect? Nah but the only flaw that is of note for me is the sides of the deck. Also I think it has the best lineup of games A1up has done. Emulated beautifully too. My game complaint is I need baby difficulty for the MK games cause I suck.
My hubs and I just bought this cabinet. We've been smiling all evening and now that I've seen they make more (zomg the star wars game) I want more! Luckily for us neither is as tall as you are so that isn't a problem. I feel like the left/right is a little flaky at times but that just could be because we were 2 playing Rampage and were both off to the side a little to fit there. All in all so happy!
This is a great cab. My kid loves it and every game is a great one from my youth. I do notice the screen cut off on the top when standing, not sitting, but I've found there's really nothing to see up there anyway. Great review!
One question...has anyone figured out how to save the enabled state for three hidden characters in UMK3 on this cabinet? It doesn't save like the gen2. The EJB menu is still there and you can unlock them there or with the end code screen. It just won't save when you quit the game and come back in.
just picked one up at walmart for 249. I think at that price I can deal with the inconveniences especially since I usually play these by myself anyways. Its going to look awesome in my office
@@mikaylafaithparteli9412 nice. I ended up also buying a street fighter legacy 12 in 1 cabinet too. 2 arcades in my office now . I also picked up 2 countercades on sale. I got Marvel Superheroes countercade and a Galaga one. I have no more room. Need bigger house!!
Great review man. I told myself I wouldn't buy the Midway Legacy cause of the problem you talked about at the start...but you sold me on all the positives that iam think of selling my gen2 MK haha 😆😅
I recently got this and I have been having a blast with it. I was never really into fighting games though, I got this for Joust and Rampage. However since I have the MK games, I’m gonna play them. I’ve actually gotten pretty good as Scorpion though I still have yet to beat the game without being defeated. I have the same issues with the marquee blocking part of the screen but fortunately my boss was getting rid of some barstools so I took them off his hands.
Great review Michael, can't wait to play it. Game lineup is so diverse compared to the other cabs and cant beat 12 in 1 so you get your bang for your buck. Figured if height is an issue will get quality furniture risers even though play most games sitting on a stool. Will adjust mount of control panel if sides sticking up are an issue. End of the day looks to be a great cab with ergonomics that if they bother you, it can be fixed without it being too much of a hassle.
I really want this cab as it has so much variety but there seem to be so many issues with it , it’s hard to pull the trigger ! Not sure what to do. Great games on here but it’s a mostly 2 player cab. I hear a head to head is coming out but never tried 2P games on a cocktail Cab. The screen would be cut in 2 but controls would be slot better I’m sure . Hmmm and why no high score saves on rampage ? People seems to be complaining about the marquee but it looks great . Also complaints about the screen being too vertical ? Any thoughts ?
Another great review ;) New sub here, thanks for the great content. Getting my Midway cab today! :D I also have a vintage gaming channel, focus mainly on Atari & 8 bit computers, just FYI. Been watching your videos for a couple of days to decide to get my cab!
Good review! You need those arcade 4 inch riser extenders for this. I have a few of them and the added height is so much better. Having said that. I’m passing on this cab.
There is no excuse that they don't have both the Taito and Midway Space Invaders and Space Invaders Part 2 versions with either the use of a joystick, or even better the use of the buttons to control the cannon. It's MIDWAY LEGACY, and these games are the biggest parts of its legacy followed by Pac Man because they started the halcyon era of arcade games and the arcade experience.
I'm hearing that the version of MK1 that is found on these cabinets (both this one and the original MK-only cabinet) don't actually have the hidden character Reptile. Can you confirm or deny this?
good review. i wish the arcades were slightly bigger. I have the TMNT arcade and feel like it gives just enough space for 2 physical people to stand in play despite it being a 4 player set
hey michael i like my new mortal kombat legacy as we except for the same 2 issues i am going to raise the control deck leuel with the side panels and add a extension to the riser was wondering if you was going to do or did you do the same thing let me me know ok keep on gaming lol !!!
Awesome review! love the opening music and you gave us a great look at the artwork and design of the cab while an indepth look at each of the games on this cab. i like your honesty aswell on some of the flaws associated with the viewing angles! keep up the great work!
I have MK2 on very easy and once you get to the 4th fight or so, the AI gets a lot harder. I was a good 20 minutes and like 10 to 15 continues before I gave up. Is this normal?
I'm a pip-sqweak, so these cabs are not much of a problem, though I like sitting on a stool when playing. That being said, if I had my own place, for a NAMCO cab, I would plunk the money for a FULL SIZE Pixel Bash. I actually prefer a FULL sized cab, and I would prefer that with this cab, along with the Atari Legacy Edition. (A FULL SIzED, completely accurate TEMPEST cab...)
I bought the cabinet because of Paperboy. It is unplayable. There is no control of the bike. You want to turn a little right it is 100% hard right. same left. Same with acceleration and stopping. Either you go 100% forward and hit something or you stop. No control. The other games are great. Love Joust, Tapper, Toobin, Bubbles, Rampage
Nice review. I was gonna get the legacy edition and then just sell my Arcade1up Mortal Kombat cabinet (original with the 3 games) The reason why I’m passing on this is, just like most featured cabinets, is to mainly play that featured game which is Mortal Kombat. Yes you can play these games solo, but what makes these games great and popular is because they are 2 player fighting games. So the fact that many are saying, including you, that the design on the sides with the raised ledge makes it nearly impossible to comfortably play 2 player . . I mean what’s the point? And yes, it does have a variety of games, but if the controls are still not that great for Defender, Paperboy was great because of the handle bar control in the original arcade cabinet, and Rampage was meant originally to play up to 3 players simultaneously . . Then why even own this cabinet? To me, if you have a variety of games where you just have to get used to the comtrols for certain games, then what makes that any difference than owning a game disc for a video game console like Xbox or Playstation with a bunch of arcade games on it? Its not. Arcade1up is great for people like me and you, and many others that grew up to this era of going to the arcades, and now being able to mimick that at home with actual cabinets to create that same nostalgia at fraction of the cost. I agree with you, . . Its odd that Arcade1up didn’t have testers where they would acknowledge the side ledges should not of been raised to have an uncomfortable 2 player gaming experience, and so to not launch the product yet until they corrected it. Very sloppy in my opinion. I loved the game Tapper, I played on my computer in 8th grade that I played on my PC , my Radio Shack Tandy 1000 lol. I played that using keyboard keys lol . . But later saw what the cabinet looked like in the arcade from photos. (Because I never played it in the arcade) But I could only imagine how much more fun it would be if I played with the same controls. So the fact that you showed how they used both control sticks for Arcade1up, it looks really fun. I would of got this and tried to ignore the Paperboy and Rampage setbacks, but again, had to pass, because of the awkard gaming for two people playing against each other on all 3 MK games, smh. Keep up the great videos though, you’re arcade looks awesome!!!!
Nope, cuz I got mine through my work employee website. Where my works rewards us with points doing what we always do everyday for my job anyways. So I got it as a bonus. But yeah I could always sell if I want to. I can always mod mine too. Cuz the point is, you get extra games with the Legacy cab, but if you can’t play the games with the controls that are ideal for them, thats just like someone modding the cabinet anyways, for way less with hundreds of more games lol. But forget the extra games . . If you responded to my comment, I’m gonna assume you have this Legacy cabinet. Lol. And if you do, you are fooling yourself if you got it to play MK solo. Lol. If you can’t comfortably play 2 players on it, what’s the point? MK is a popular game because of its 2 player ability just like Street Fighter and pretty much any fighting game, duh lol. Arcade1up always screws up on stuff and comes out with something probably better later anyways, but yeah getting a Fighting cabinet that is only ideal for one player play is wack. Lmao. I get this review cuz its his channel set up for these reviews, and a lot of these channels, they get the cabinets free from Arcade1up anyways so thats why the reviews are mostly positive. So again, if you actually got this cab, have fun playing it solo . . Lol
Excellent review! I want to tell you that I love the music in your videos Michael. I pumped the brakes on getting this cab. Now my teenage son says that he wants it for his birthday this summer. He's into modern gaming and he's gotten into retro probably cause of me lol. He has become a Mortal Kombat fan. My wife and daughter like the Rampage, PaperBoy, Joust ext. I'd be playing Tapper. 😁 I've seen people get the furniture feet for this for the line of sight issues. Are you going to get some?
Line of site can be fixed with money, but the controls can't without butchering. How can uncomfortable controls give it a pass of approval? Seems comfort of controls would be a huge factor and at least half the weight of the worth of it. Also, what good are some of the games if the control layout does not fit? Seems they should have chose others that do fit. Wizard of War though is the bomb, so that offsets some. A WOW art cabinet would be cool.
did anybody else have trouble getting this cabinet together because i can't get the screws on bottom board g and board l to tighten down as they just spin as i get them so far in. might have to get a hold of customer service for arcade 1 up or best buy and see what they say for me to do
I dont regret buying it, because the game lineup is pretty solid, but I'm not a fan of the control deck issue (lower than sides), line of sight, the marquee that just seems faded out, and the cramped deck space itself. it's fun to play, but 2 player is tough no doubt. I just think they could've done so much better on the design. this looks like a toy, not like the other ones, IMO.
also i will mention the line of sight issue is solved by omitting the riser & using a bench or stool - kinda lame but it makes it the appropriate height for my nieces and nephews to play
keep checking offerup/mercari there are used cabs all over the place: i got space invaders (new in box $150) , pacman $100, pacman $60 amazon peel and stick wallpaper makes it easy to reskin and is $30 for a huge roll
this is kind of why i can't consider Mortal Kombat as the arcade cabinet I buy someday. Everyone wants Arcade perfect but Mortal Kombat had input reading making them impossible to beat without getting cheap yourself. At least the Street Fighter games while also cheated were still beatable without the player needing to go full cheap mode. If they someday put arcades without the input reading, then I might consider buying them.
