In addition to saving Vi's life, I believe Marcus took Vi because the council was still demanding someone be locked up for blowing up Jayce's place in episode 1. It's why Vi tried to give herself up at the end of Episode 2. By locking her up without a trial he also prevents her from exposing his corruption.
@Fangtorn
@Fangtorn 3 месяца назад
Vi wasn't locked up for the apartment explosion though. In ep 4 Caitlyn says "there's no record of you or your crimes." The Council wanted someone apprehended because Jayce's talk of magic made the people afraid. They wanted to publicly punish the culprits to reassure people, so it doesn't make sense they'd just lock Vi away without a trial. Besides, after Jayce and Viktor crack hextech the Council are about to embrace magic in a big way, so finding the culprits likely wasn't a priority anymore. Marcus had no reason to take Vi other than to save her.

Of course Marcus had presented her as culprit to the counsel. And no one on the counsel bothers with prison records, that’s solely the sheriff’s job. Too bad if Marcus should be so overworked that he forgets to fill out the papers.

@@Fangtorn episode 2: the counsel speaks directly to sheriff Grayson about the investigation. Episode 3: Vander: „the counsel needs it’s pound of flesh.“ Episode 4: sheriff Markus is taken off guard by Jayce reviewing paperwork. Episode 5: Caitlin gets Vi out of prison on Jayce‘s order, without Jayce knowing (episode 6). Episode 8: counselor: „we have done investigation on Silco, it has not shown such level of organization!“ Even at that point Caitlin had to point out that this information came from Markus. Jayce to Vi: „I can have you arrested“ And then silently admits by changing topic that even he doesn’t care what would happen afterwards. Your insistence that there would be written testament about someone being presented to the counsel as culprit is … questionable at best 🤷‍♂️ Caitlin’s line „there are no records about you or your crimes“ has simply two functions in the story: 1) to show that no one cared about her in the last 6-7 years. Explaining that everyone is surprised she still lives. 2) to emphasize that the events of episode 3 are not referenced anymore. Even Caitlin doesn’t mention the explosion anymore, and she was in the same building, the same floor that got blown up.

@@jorgmintel3060 If there was a trial or anything, I am sure that Silco would have found out about Vi being alive. There nothing that implies that "oh they just forgot to write down her crimes." That is not how writing works. The fact that Cait said that definitely proves that Marcus put her there without any trial, record or crimes.

Yeah, I definitely feel like, despite everything, Marcus WANTS to be a good man, and he felt terrible that like half a dozen people died because of his deal with Silco, so he took the opportunity to at least save the 1 person he could in that situation. But then he panicked and didn't know what to do with her. If he let her go, she would go after Silco and get herself killed and him in danger for helping her, so he put her in prison until he could think of something better. Maybe if Silco died or was arrested it would be safe to release her, but then things got complicated and neither of those happened

Fun fact, one of the lead writers had to inisist on keeping the 'you're hot, cupcake' line in as she wanted to make it completely clear what Vi thought of Caitlyn. And showing Caitlyn with the woman in the brothel answered the question that Vi had given her. Just something to keep an eye on! Great reaction as always, you dont miss much at all.

It's called 'Bridging the Rift,' I'd recommend checking it out even if it's not for reaction purposes, especially with Arcane season 2 coming later this year. Thanks for the reaction!

Marcus probably legitimately in HIS mind was saving Vi's Life. He doesn't view himself as corrupt, he thinks of the undercity as criminal and immoral and feels like he is carrying on his old boss's plan of keeping the peace with Silco instead of Vander (since he viewed Vander as just as criminal and sees no difference). To him he's doing what he has to in order to protect the upper city and support his daughter. He 'hid' Vi in prison to keep her away from Silco and lied to Silco about it.
@mercilessidioms
@mercilessidioms 3 месяца назад
The weird thing about Marcus is that, while he's pretty universally despised, he's also arguably the character most aware of his own flaws. This story does not treat anyone who becomes conscious of their limitations gently--because as a rule they figure it out too late. Of course, those who refuse to acknowledge their limits don't necessarily end up any better off...I was going to name names but realized that was verging on spoilers. :)
@Fangtorn

This isn't the same relationship as Grayson and Vander though, that was a partnership built on mutual respect and a shared goal of keeping the peace. Silco doesn't want peace, and doesn't respect Marcus, he's just an asset in his war against Piltover. We see Marcus staring at that same blood-soaked coin. Marcus knows he's corrupt and isn't serving the upper city, but is between a rock and a hard. If he continues working for Silco he's betraying everything he once stood for, but if he doesn't Silco will either kill him or expose his corruption, and then what will happen to his daughter? That's why he's so conflicted. He has no good options.

It's not just Imagine Dragons who appear animated in Arcane. The person who plays the plays the various violin solos in the soundtrack is Ray Chen - and he's the musician playing throughout Jayce's wheeling and dealing this episode.

When Cait is talking to Vi in the cell she says, "there's no record of you, or your crimes." So Marcus threw her in there without any documentation.
@fabiangiesen306
@fabiangiesen306 3 месяца назад
Exactly! I think most likely outcome of E3 is that Silco/Marcus framed Vander/Mylo/Claggor/Deckard and the other dead as a splinter faction that attacked Piltover and then accidentally blew up themselves with their homemade Hextech explosives trying to produce weapons+shimmer for an uprising. There's enough links (Mylo/Claggor, blue gems) to the initial break-in to make that story stick. Marcus gets to "solve" the case and look good right as they need a new sheriff. Silco gets time to recover now that his plan A is toast. Marcus certainly did not want Vi to stand trial and risk her saying stuff in front of the council (outside his control) that would contradict this version of events. He knows she was there at Benzo's - he heard her yelling from the basement - and that she was an ear witness to his yelling "that wasn't the deal!" to Silco. Definitely doesn't want any of that to come up in a trial, even from an easily-dismissed witness, if he can avoid it. So pull some strings and get her thrown into Stillwater and out of the way "unofficially" without ever being convicted of anything.
@smileyhappyface5864
@smileyhappyface5864 3 месяца назад
@@fabiangiesen306 That doesn't make any sense, as we've just established she had _zero_ records, of her existence OR her crimes. A matter important enough to get the council's attention would never be left undocumented, so Vi's arrest had nothing to do with the explosion in Piltover as far as anyone knows. Moreover, Silco thought Vi was dead, so there's no way that Vi's arrest was public knowledge in any form, and there's no way strings could've been pulled for Vi to be imprisoned without trial. Marcus simply took Vi, threw her in a cell by forging orders the same way Caitlyn did, and destroyed the forgery once she was in there. There's no reason to assume the process was any more complex than that. The fact that Vi is aggressive toward other prisoners and (as far as she knows) _is_ a known criminal, nobody ever questioned her being there. He might've told the council that Grayson and Vander were dead, meaning the person they were going to arrest for the explosion was now gone, but Vi had nothing to do with that.
@fabiangiesen306
@fabiangiesen306 3 месяца назад
@@smileyhappyface5864 I'm not sure how you think I claimed anything else? I started my whole reply with "exactly!" (about Marcus throwing her in without documentation). The rest was my theory about how things went down, namely that Marcus/Silco likely pinned the break-in/Grayson's murder on the conveniently dead. My whole point being that if they had tried implicate Vi in it, a) that would've been noted in her file for sure, b) there's no way that happens without Silco knowing Vi's alive (and as per the end of E5, he was not aware), c) it would be incredibly risky for Marcus/Silco for Vi to stand trial. Hence, pin it on someone else and just throw Vi into Stillwater off the books.

Marcus saved her life, yes he separated her from powder, but as we've seen before vi is impulsive she definitely would've tried to come back for her and would've gotten herself killed. He put her in prison and scrubbed all records of her, thats why Caitlin couldn't find any information on her in the beginning of the episode
@SiMeGamer
@SiMeGamer 3 месяца назад
I think it's a little simpler than that. If you recall, in the first 3 episodes, the council demanded someone take accountability for the incident that destroyed the building. They needed to put someone in jail to keep the civil unrest at bay. Marcus was looking for the culprits and Vander wasn't willing to give anyone up - until the start of episode 3 where he was willing to give up himself instead of Vi. Marcus not only saved her but he simply got the "piece of meat" to take the blame. This likely promoted him to Sheriff since Grayson was dead and he did what they've tried to do for days by himself. Everything adds up :]
@shsnwksybdeb
@shsnwksybdeb 3 месяца назад
@@SiMeGamer yeah I agree, it also explains why he had chloroform on the ready lol, but I also believe he really didn't want her to die, either to spite silco or maybe to repent for that deal he made with him, because I don't see why he would say "he'll kill you if he hears you" like she was already drugged there would be no point of saying that, and I don't think the show runners would write something pointless
@fabiangiesen306
@fabiangiesen306 3 месяца назад
@@SiMeGamer The _council_ wanted a culprit. Pretty sure that if Marcus had brought in Vi as such, she would've stood trial (and eventually probably landed in Stillwater with an "official" conviction), and that's real bad for Marcus because he knows she was around at Benzo's (he heard her yelling in the basement) and thus a witness to his "that wasn't the deal!" with Silco. I think the actual solution here was to frame all the dead folks at the cannery (including Vander, Mylo, Claggor and Deckard) as a splinter faction behind the break-in, Grayson's/Benzo's murder and the cannery explosion. Tidy because they're all dead so they can't contradict the story, keeps Silco out of it (and gives him time to rebuild), and it makes Marcus look good since he very publicly confronted Vander the day before. What they don't want is someone officially on trial delivering a very different version of events in front of the council. So Vi is most definitely not blamed for the break-in and the explosion, she's just silently disappeared.

In fact, we do not mean corruption, we mean the aristocracy. The way the council members are depicted rather suggests that they are representatives of those families that own the city. It's not like they stole anything from anyone. This is that they take what they consider to be their own. And the intrigues with this, only from the fact that there are other families who have their own interests. Silko is shown to be a villain, but if you think about it, he is not a villain - he is a revolutionary. And the aristocrats of the upper city, quite demonstrate the justification for the presence of such as Silko. Yes, he is quite cruel to others, but I think what made him like that is the cruelty he opposes. What did he see in Jinx? He saw himself in her. How Vander betrayed and changed Silko. Vi betrayed and changed her sister.

We see in this episode how conflicted Marcus is working for Silco, and he very much is working _for_ Silco, instead of the mutual partnership Grayson and Vander. I think he saved Vi because he genuinely wanted to do something to makeup for his unwitting complicity in Grayson's death, but then he didn't know what to do with her that wouldn't expose him to either to the Council or Silco, so he just hid her in Stillwater.

I have seen comments in other Arcane reactions, and I see it in this one, but you really shouldn't view characters in this show as all good or all bad. Aka Marcus, he is doing what he thinks is right. Just like his previous boss even though she was killed years ago. He was young then and hated the undercity, but as he realized, she was doing her best to keep peace and working with Vander who also cared about trying to keep peace after the attempted up-rising. He is doing his best to keep peace with the undercity and it's just Silco in charge. In his mind, he saved Vi, vs. letting her go back and probably would've gotten killed by his goons. I would say you shouldn't just dislike a character because you believe the character is just "all bad." A lot of characters in this show have morally grey areas and have their motivations, and a lot of them think they are doing the right thing in their own mind. This may counteract what I said above, but obviously we all know the difference between good and evil and we all have our moral codes, we aren't so dumb to have our brains fall out. But this show does a great job then just making most characters all evil or all good, they do a good job at writing a lot of the main characters as complex characters, not just one dimensional
