The Archaeological Museum of Delphi complements from a historical, scientific and artistic point of view the most famous ancient Greek sanctuary dedicated to the worship of the God Apollo. In the history of mankind, Delphi remained not only through the architectural ensemble that makes up the sanctuary but, above all, through its famous oracle, as well as through its pan-Hellenic games (Pythic Games).
The museum contains a large number of pieces identified on the site and in the vicinity of the archaeological site of Delphi. The artefacts, presented with some details in the subtitles, are displayed in 13 halls generally in chronological order, some of the rooms also containing pieces of mixed ages attributed to a single major building, for example the treasures of Athena, of Sifnos or the Temple of Apollo. Many important pieces were unearthed from the votive pits with offerings located on the Sacred Way.
The temple of Apollo, magnificent at the time, was also the home of Pythia, the divine priestess who communicated the wisdom of the God Apollo, the one who knew the meaning of all things. Although the predictions were generally confused, their later reinterpretation led to the rise of the oracle's fame, which became the most famous oracle of the ancient Greek world, attracting kings and emperors. The sanctuary, especially its Oracle, functioned during the 8th century BC - 4th century AD, the "pagan" temple of Apollo being destroyed in 390 AD on the orders of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, a fervent Christian.
Besides the Oracle, Apollo's sanctuary at Delphi was also famous for the Pythian Games which it hosted every four years, two years after the better known Olympic Games (at Olympia). As at Olympia, the games at Delphi were accompanied by a pan-Hellenic peace announced by emissaries months before, but there was still a big difference, the Pythian Games being accompanied by important cultural events that preceded the sporting ones. The artistic performances consisted of theatrical performances, vocal, instrumental music, poetry, dance and took place in a theater with a capacity of 5,000 seats, located near the Temple of Apollo. Sports competitions were held in a stadium located near the sanctuary and included athletics and wrestling in various styles. The equestrian contests concluded the Pythian Games and were held in another stadium.
