I have been shooting a bow for 50 years I've been doing it wrong for all of them I have been searching for some instruction on how to use back tension and everyone just tells you to use your back with no real explanation thank you for finally clarifying how we are supposed to do this
Great video! For almost 6 months i was mostly using my arm muscles and eventually injuring my shoulder because of my poor draw form. Ive been trying to relearn my form and focusing on using the correct muscles and this video is a great demo of what to do. I think everyone old and new at archery could benefit from refocusing on form from time to time
This has helped me understand and feel the correct back tension better than anything I've been shown. I understood it intellectually but never had the proper sensation of doing it correctly! Thank you so much!
This has been the most informative video I've seen on back tension, something I've really struggled with over the last couple of years. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks for this amazing idea!! I am using the elastic bands already, and I am able to "feel" the difference. Two thumps up!! An Archer from Panama City, Panama (Central America).
These case study were very helpful. I have learned a lot and it did help me in learning archery. But I am using compound bow without any aids like bare bow.
As a archer with some shoulder issues all i can say is thank you! The foremaster is quite heavy for the front shoulder but this would bring in a whole new dimension to warming up and training
Simple and great explanation about back tension. The drill method is easy to follow. Thank you very much Coach. We are from GeForce Archery - Indonesia.
Wonderful . I improved my self in lot of areas overnight after watching Case study No 01-03. I would say this is the Number 01 Chanel for beginners. Hats Off. Could you kindly teach us the release Sir.
Hey Surin! Cheers for the great feedback, I'm blown away that this has helped you 👍 I'm currently working on a complete coaching series, so stay posted! In the meantime, what are the biggest challenges that you face in archery? 💪🎯🏹🥇
Thanks for the amazing response! A lot of people are messaging me who are getting a lot out of this video - keep the comments coming! This is now one of my most popular videos... which means that there are people who are watching this without first seeing 'Coaching Case Study' #1 and #2... *Pro tip* If you don't get 'technique structure' correct first, you won't be able to do this drill correctly. Get into it! 💪🏹🎯🥇
Kudos, another really excellent training aid. This is great for getting the back shoulder in alignment at full draw and anchor, movement not muscle contraction. We shoot barebow so our anchor is higher but this works well. thanks
Thanks! I've got heaps of content and exciting things coming out this year, so stay posted as the shot trainer will definitely be part of it. I think there are already some decent videos on the use of the shot trainer, but the key thing from my experience is that you should start with the Ex-draws, then progress to the shot trainer. Does that help?
Wow that helps me a lot to find out why my Draw shoulder hurts. This method offers a lot of training and self study potential. Thank you for sharing this.
is this exercise the same for the archers that shooting with modern Longbow, recurve bow, and historic wood bow? I mean the instinctive shot and the Mediterranean string take (1 finger up and two fingers down), and the right hand and the index finger move near the angle of mouth.
Wow, this video explains beautifully what back tension is. I now have a clear view at what I need to improve on to maintain a good form. A very good video, you have my sub 👍
Thanks for your amazing feedback! I'm really stoked that you got some value out of this video. Once you've given this drill a try, I'd be interested in your feedback into how you go. If you haven't already, I would also encourage you to go back and watch coaching case study #1 & #2, to see how it all fits together. 💪🏹🎯🥇
Another good video Coach . Great use of the theraband and much easier to use than the shot trainers . This is what I teach too but using surgical tube, probably more comfortable using the band though.
Thanks Ian, I agree, the shot trainers are quite useful to neurally overload the scapular retractors, but it is a more difficult variation of the drill and Ex-draws are far better when first learning back tension.
Excellent training and description of back tension, new to archery and now ordering a theraband to follow along with this vid. Thank you so much Jarrod for this explanation, will check out the first two sessions. All the best Tim 👍
Great question... this is so important. First of all have you watched 'Coaching case study #1 and #2'? This is covered in some detail here. I will be doing more content on these conditioning drills however, so stay posted!
Teaching the concept of back tension is pretty difficult, but you have broken it down so it’s easily understood. Do you think I could use this system for compound archers?
Hi Jim, Thanks for your feedback! I think that the concept would translate well to compound archers. There may need to be some variation in the exercise to account for the different hand position with a release aid etc. Please let me know how you go with it!
I’ve been shooting for 18 months, only barebow, I love this demo of implementing back tension! Very clear. Would you have any advice for this with a different anchor point? Mine is corner of my mouth
I am trying this for the first time today. I'm feeling some burn in the top front of my shoulder when doing this exercise. Should I or am I doing something wrong? Thanks
Which shoulder? It's impossible to say if you're doing it correctly without seeing what you're doing, but some burning in the muscles is normal when repping out drills!
Great question. The right answer can vary depending on your technical development and training focus. To start with, 10 sets of 3 reps is good, then archers can work up to sets of 15 or more reps over time. The most effective way to train this is to superset Ex-draws with shooting and SPT drills. In the Technique Fundamentals course we have a number of Bow Conditioning Circuits that incorporate it in this way 🙂
HELLO PROFESSOR GOOD SUNDAY I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS EXERCISE IS ONLY FOR MUSCLE TRAINING...AND HAS NOT TO DO WITH THE POSITION OF THE HAND IN THE ANCHOR BEFORE RELEASING THE ARROW. SINCE THE SHOULDERS ARE ALIGNED I THINK IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO AIM AT THE TARGET TO TAKE THE SHOT
@@RogueArcheryTV just the way you explained it. Tonight at the range I put it into practise and shot a 580, my groups were 100% tighter and I have a WA18 this weekend which I feel I will smash. Thankyou
I love the exercise as it gives lots of immediate feedback to the student. My only criticism is that the latex bands seem to have some magical attraction to beards. Those of us with hairy faces will find this can be very uncomfortable! 😬🤪. It’s like shooting and waxing your face at the same time!
this is helpful but now my grouping has gone10cm left at 18m, but more tight and consistent. i also noticed that after adding back tension, my anchor is tighter, that means string pressure on my face is increasing as a pull through the clicker, is this good? it kinda feels like the strong is bouncing off my face, causing arrow to bounce off my plunger and all landing left...
There are a couple of things here. Improved alignment and back tension will increase face pressure with your anchor, but the string pressure on the face should be light. It seems like you may need to check your head position and string picture to correct the arrows going left. As you expand, the anchor shouldn't move along the face and the string should not 'bounce'. I hope this helps, and you may need to spend some time working on anchor by the sound of it.
@@RogueArcheryTV Thanks for your feedback! I do expect that adjustments are needed whenever I make changes or try new things out. Yes I will be checking out my anchor and head position again to bring myself back on track. Thanks!
Hi Bean, Yes. I've put a link in the video description to my recommended theraband. The good thing is that you can regulate your own resistance by applying more or less tension in the band. I recommend that you start light to learn the concept and then go from there. 👍
Hi Jimmy, I didn't invent this method, it was shown to me by a national coach. I've since added my own 'flavour' and developed it into various training programs.
Great. I wonder which level should the elbow be at full draw? above or same level with shoulders? i feel more back tension if it's the same level but not sure if that is the right way.
Hi Jerry, is there any logic between back tension and stance? Why I didn't see much emphasis on back tension in the Korean system whilst requiring beginners to take square stance? Any thought on this? thanks!
Yes, not many people perceive how the stance impacts back tension, so this is a very good question Yang! The angle of the stance sets the angle of the hips, so depending on whether you shoot with a square stance or open stance, there is a different level of thoracic rotation in the full draw position. This means that the drawing side scapular position is further retracted through it's range of motion with an open stance. This can be perceived as 'more' back tension, which is not correct, it's just closer to the end of it's range of motion. This is a pretty complex topic, so I actually spend a fair bit of time covering it, as well as demonstrations and case studies in the new Technique Fundamentals Course. archerymasterclass.com/p/technique-fundamentals-for-recurve-archery
1. First, learn basic position 2. Focus on movement 3. Learn the feeling only through repetition Feelings can be very misleading! Great question by the way. Should I do a video in this?
Good question, but I have some bad news... The correct progression is: 1. Learn technique on low poundage (VERY low poundage) 2. Increase training volume (shooting and SPT) to reinforce technique structure Nd process 3. Increase poundage incrementally. Doing these steps in the wrong order doesn't work. I recommend that you get a set of lighter limbs. They can be cheap ones, as they are primarily for training and technique purposes.
@@leandrobrprods if you're serious about training and your own technique, then get a cheap training bow with interchangeable limbs. We often use cheap club level bows for this. I'm litterally training on one as I type this message!
Hi Shawn, Great question, and I think that this principle would translate well with compound. The drill may need some variation in the hand position however to replicate the angle of drawing with a release aid. Does that help?
Yes. It helps in general and is mandatory e.g with backtension releases. Basically your pull against the wall is done in the way shown here in the vid.
Rogue Archery TV yes thank you. I’m a coach for our local S3DA club and this is great info for helping to teach back tension. That’s the one thing that was always hard to explain.
Loving the feedback, and a lot of people are asking how this applies to compound. To be honest I hadn't really considered this much before, as I am not a compound coach, but I will put a bit of thought into it now and maybe seek some feedback from a few compounders. I would actually be very interested once you guys give this a try to let me know how it translates and if there are any parts that you find difficult 👍
Hmmm, I've never had to deal with thos before but it's a good question. I did a quick search and there appears to be a latex free theraband equivalent. I suggest that you give this a try and please let me know how you go? www.thera-bandacademy.com/tba-portal/Thera-Band-Latex-Free-Bands
@@RogueArcheryTV tried it and it transferred over the same. Great idea for practice I appreciate it! How often would you recommend doing this? Would you recommend it everytime before you shoot?
Yea thanks. I want to show some of the common errors that you will come across and also how to work with them, as this is what people struggle with. It's the HOW that's difficult! Have you been able to implement any of the techniques I demonstrate?
Yah. Now i lots using pvc pipe. Its easy to image shooting form, and easy to learn elbow rotation. Also pvc is useful for shoulder dislocation training 😅
