Trying a new brand of knife, with a new steel, and a new type of grind. Spoiler...I really like this knife (but not the sheath). As a traditional, Buck Knife kind of guy, this knife was a new experience for me. Watch as I try it out on an elk hunt, construct a new sheath for it, and try to sharpen the convex edge.

A Bark River knife is also on my knife bucket list. Thanks for your real world, honest review. Would loved to have seen how it performed field dressing, but camp tasks are just as important. And your sheath… man, when you insert the knife, that retention “snap” is music to my ears! Beautiful work!

I would have loved to do a field dressing too! We still have tags to fill, so we’ll see what the season brings

I'd love to have one of your sheaths for my Cub EDC. Bark River sheaths are a big let down.

...by the way... If and when Bark River makes another run of the North Country EDC, I highly recommend that model.

I also used to make bad feathersticks...but...I started to grab the knife with a closed grip...by closing the index and thumb first..then middle..ring and pinky..with the blade pointed just behind the first knuckle...don’t squeeze the handle too tightly...you can then adjust the angle of your push by lightning or tightening your grip

I agree, the BR sheaths are cheaply made. I only have one BR. It is the Bobcat Hunter. Pretty small knife. For the price I paid at almost $300, they should have made it with a tapered tang. The convex edge is very good on my knife. However, there are tool marks all over both sides of the blade. Pretty bad for for the price. Also, the steel is CPM - 154. A good steel for hunting, but not a super steel for sure. For those reasons, I will never buy another BR knife. Let the BR lovers chime in.

Hubby and I both have a few each of Bark River knives. They are very nice and retain an edge too. I LOVE the knife sheath you have with yours. Do you make them to sell or just for personal use? They are very well made and looks are outstanding for sure. Thanks for a good review of a very good knife.

Liked your review of the Cub I have one I like it a lot i have the full size also but use the EDC way more often. Now how do I go about buying a sheath like the one you made. I'm right-handed and I usually carry weak-side appendix. I have plenty of Ulti-clips I like how you made it to carry both ways. If I can order one please let me know how and I will do so Thanks

What computer program are you using to design your sheaths? Thanks.
@wyomingwright
@wyomingwright 9 месяцев назад
Microsoft PowerPoint 😁. I wish I could say it was something fancy like adobe illustrator, but I haven’t figured those programs out yet. All you really need is to draw some lines and ovals around a profile pic of your knife.

You should contact Bark River and provide quality sheaths for their knives. The sheath you get from BR is trash.
@wyomingwright

I appreciate the vote of confidence! I don’t know if I’m set up for that kind of volume. My videos make it look like I can whip a sheath out in a couple hours, but it takes me quite a bit longer.

Has the blade gotten any patina yet ?
@wyomingwright
@wyomingwright 8 месяцев назад
Not really but I’ve kept it oiled pretty well so there’s not been a lot of oxidation. The handle has gotten a lot darker with use, though.

Is that just a leather sheath? Why does it sound like a click when you put it back into the sheath?
@wyomingwright
@wyomingwright 7 месяцев назад
Yep, just leather. Wet formed around the knife and dipped in wax for strength and protection. Makes a pretty solid sheath

What is the hardness of the steel? Is 3V air quench, water quench or oil quench? As you can tell I've never heard of 3V. Forgive me if these are dumb questions.
@wyomingwright
@wyomingwright 9 месяцев назад
Not a dumb question. Nothing seems simple or straight forward with these super steels. I believe it can be air, plate, or oil quenched with the right oil. I’m not sure of Bark River’s quenching process.

I know all about paying the bucks for the super steel . I like you bought 1 Benchmade plainsman if my memory is correct S30V I searched for some time for the cheapest one I could fined . I rehandle it it came with a very thin handle not my thing don't care for those at all. I fine it a great knife not my favorite at all , I know it's great to buy american made . But I have to say for quality and tuff steel I' m a great fan of Joker knives and muela there spanish but great knives and you need not sell your grands to buy one . Happy Trails
@wyomingwright
@wyomingwright 9 месяцев назад
I have heard good things about Joker. I really like TRC out of Lithuania, but they’re really spendy. I’m also intrigued by Winkler, LT Wright, and Tops which are all American based. LT Wright has the option to purchase without a sheath for about $20 less which I appreciate. Bark River just as well save the leather. They’re sheaths are almost insulting

All the names you spoke of are just to pricey I had at one time over 400 I have sold and given away probably 200 now .Don't take thi s if were talking bunches of money we are not all mid range a lower. Only 2 knives over a hundred bucks I make sheaths as a hobby after retiring I had all these knives and in almost all cases the mid and low range knives have horrible sheaths .But in all cases the knives have never failed me not one no chips or cracks not a single problem other than handle size some I had to re handle . Any way the prices are just great with joker Muela a little more. You will not b disapointed . Happy trails. @@wyomingwright
