I legitimately love the idea of when of the ice barrier fighters just comes across this bug in the middle of their wall and instead of fetching a can of raid decides to pick it up and call it a friend.
Overrated maybe but I actually find the deck pretty fun. I feel like if more decks were capable of easily combating it it'd be more of a fun strategy than something that gets annoying seeing everywhere
@@borby4584 Gotta love it. Konami: Its been almost a decade, no way those paypigs even *remember* this vard. Let 'em off the banlist. *Literally 4 months later* Konami: TRISHULA IS BACK TO ONE YALL! TRISHULA'S AT ONE!
good job me, replaced the pic of the pre-errata Brionac with ANOTHER pre-errata Brionac but with updated PSCT, just ignore that little piece of dumbshittery
You sound really tired, I recently lost passion for the game because the community's point of views are medieval. I'm afraid that might be happening to you because of everyone hounding you to make vids. Keep your head up man. And if you need to take a big break to focus on your health rather than the whims of the never-ending flood of people who hate themselves and everything else. Do it man
Oh and about that Mirror business and why Ice Barriers would have something to counter their boss monster. The whole point of the Ice Barrier tribe is to keep the three dragons sealed forever. Worlds tend to end when they're free, especially good ol' Trish. Funnily enough, this might even explain why they're so bad at summoning their Synchros : with the exception of Dewloren because fuck if I know where he fits in all this, IBs never intended to bring them out in the first place. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE
I’m coming back to this video after watching a few “Duel Terminal storyline explained” videos. And I’m thinking about how, to stop the Worms, the Ice Barriers released the dragons one at a time and only made things worse. Brionac, Gungir, and Trishula all just made things worse, Trish even causing a second Ice Age.
I seriously love these videos. I fell out of Yu-Gi-Oh around the start of GX so War of the Worthless plus Archetype Archive have been great to catch up on all the decks I missed. Granted, there are like 8 billion more archetypes out there, but these videos are both informative and really entertaining so keep up the good work Rata!
I wanted to say something funny, or at least a cringe-worthy pun, but I can't think of anything, so I'll just say excellent video Rata, keep up the good work :)
Spirits... birds... foxes... priests... sorcerers... bugs... dance princesses... samurai... knights... tribal warriors... tigers... dragons... This archetype is just _everything,_ it seems. As long as it's blue.
Saw that your comment on my GX abridged was hugely popular so i thought id see what the fuss is about, im happy i did! Great vid man, interesting idea too, gonna check out the rest cant wait to see more :D
Ice to see this archetype finally getting the spotlight it deserves. You woulda been on thin ice with me if you continued dodging these guys for any longer. This video's more than enough to suffICE. Welcome to the ice pun part of this comment thread, rock bottom.
GCD Eh, more like a flashlight on a string. This archetype is only as good because of its Synchro line-up! Other than that, its just really shotty and terribly structured! It really sucks how most of the archetypes involved in the Hidden Arsenal packs got shafted with such mediocre effects!
Daniel Ramsey Sheesh man, stop being so cold. Ice Barriers are cool, even though they have glacial speed, they are pretty chill. Snow some respect. OK, puns aside, I love me some DT Archetypes, but it's clear they were designed kinda like teams on a vacuum for the DT videogames. Ice Barriers are an interesting idea of an Archetype that slows the game down to make its plays, and the real payoff is on making the Archetype's Bosd Monsters instead of the monsters themselves, which totally works if your opponent is Allies Of Justice or some shit, but not all cards were made for the DT Games, and they totally dropped the ball on the outside support. Worms got Nebula Meteorite, Flamvells got Rekindling, Mist Valleys got Divine Wind, Ice Barriers got... Medallion and Triangle. Ugh.
The reason that people make fun of ice barriers is that despite having some of the strongest boss monsters in the game, they struggle REALLY HARD to summon them, and since that hasn't changed I guess we'll still make fun of them for the time being. I mean heck, you know something ain't right when Genex are able to spam your boss monster a lot easier than you.
Well, its for lore reasons they can't summon them. They aren't supposed to. They keep the three sealed, or end of the world. They have to release them to defeat the Fabled, and then after Trishula freezes the world, Vylons fix the ice problem. Then steelswarms happen.
@@Sassaparilla people dont realize how lore is important. One more example is because Nekrox rekt shit in duel terminal lore they wreck everything in game.
@@pinkpidgeon6926 nekroz get rekt at least not extinct like the tellars and yangzing shurit is the only one who dies in nekroz family while the beast tamer has no missing member besides wen which turn into immortal loli
The sad thing is that Ice Barriers are just 1 or 2 monsters or spells away from being a legit good swarm/synchro spam archetype due to their graveyard setup and bounce effects which suffer simply for being too slow to pull off. Just a spell that allows for easy summoning of Guntala and a monster that has a beneficial low level monster special summoning effect for discarding (since a lot of Ice Barriers discard as their effect) would make them a formidable Trish and Brionac engine. That doesn't stop like 90% of their monster lineup from being completely useless, but Prior and Strategist with some kind of support that allows their effects to be spammed is all that's needed to make up for so much of the archetype's horrid problems.
And then the Arcana Forces did eat that medallion 3 years later. Until it promptly turned upside down and made them spit out whatever their opponent needed at that very moment. It's like finding an oasis in the desert, only to discover shortly after drinking that there was a 50/50 chance to feel refreshed or start pissing battery acid.
I came here after the Ice Barriers 2: Freezing Boogaloo video to see how were after they got their support and... yeah they pretty much went from barely playable to okay-ish playable.
IT'S HAPPENING, MY FELLOW RUFFIANS! A structure deck was announced in 2020. But my suggestion for how to get Ice Barriers to work is just 4 cards: 1) The big thing it needs is an engine that makes sense. What I came up with is a Continuous Trap where up to twice per turn, you can return an Ice Barrier card from your GY to your Deck, to special summon one Level 6 or lower Ice Barrier monster from your deck in defense position. -- This works for: Raiho, Dai-Sojo, Dance Princess, Warlock, Defender, Secret Guards, Geomancer, Cryomancer, Strategist, Spellbreaker, and Prior. -- It's set up by: Strategist, Spellbreaker, Prior, Gungnir, and Brionac. 2) A once per turn Trap that negates any effect or summon, either from the field or by discarding itself, if you control an Ice Barrier card. 3) A field that makes it so you don't have to Tribute for the big monsters. If the field is sent to the GY, you can special summon one Ice Barrier monster from your hand. 4) A Link 1 that requires ANY Tuner as material (they have 4: Geomancer, Defender, Cryomancer, and Dewdark), that searches 1 Ice Barrier Spell or Trap when it's summoned. The overall strategy is to swarm monsters, and play defensively but not overwhelmingly, combining cards for a variety of defensive options. Remember that Trishula is the enemy they're holding back (see Medium, Mirror), so the playstyle is to form a barrier. Or as Or as Stan Van Gundy might say, "Form a ... WALL!" Based on the monsters' stats and playstyle, they also work with Salvage, Surface, Aquarium Stage, White Howling, or Spiritual Water Art - Aoi.
I was just about to do a fun little legacy duelist pack idea for ice ideas Ice barriers White night And ice counter monsters This helped inspire me for some nice cards for them. I already had some ideas for swarming and locking up cards(but they mainly worked with mirror judges effect) but this helps me even more.
+Wolffox I'm pretty sure that if they didn't turn that thing into fried frog legs then a group of rabbid modern Yu-Gi-Oh haters that can't stand puns would not only barbecue that thing. But if they had any cannibals with them they would devour all the members of PETA they could knock into the fire for good measure.
I mean shock troops was used in shaddolls, to fusion the water fusion to prevent future ritual summons. Plus the deck wasn't really reliant on its normal summon besides mathematician or star seraphs. It was an alright tech
Thank you. I fuckin fell in love with ice barriers over duel links and I’m so glad you decided to clear the air about ice barriers. Love your videos and the refreshingly funky accent.
LivingShadow 35 we haven't got all of the level 2s yet, wetlands Ice Barriers could be meta again. Honestly, could be a very good format for them to shine.
How doez that help? Almost all of the duel terminal cards were complete dogshit aside from dragunity which later got its own structure deck and that busted as fuck dragon ravine. Genex who the fuck knows,Allies way too obsessed with light, mist valley was incomplete. Flamvells did nothing and worms were only used for joke builds. Fableds were decent but was mostly pointless with automatic discarding. That whole first season was mind boggling
In duel terminal lore what was left of the Gishki became the Nekroz. Besides the 3 cards that the Ice Barriers had that did "become" the Nekroz were Gungir, Trishula and Brionac who need no redeeming due to how good they are.
Heckels of Sheckels You do realize Gishikis were descended from the Ice Barriers right? Hell, if their overall theme didn't make it obvious enough the game spells it out for you by having all 3 generations based around the use of shamanic/ritualistic spells channeled through the good, old IB Aquamirror. Nekroz are quite literally Neo Neo Ice Barriers
It isn't obvious, because not only do Gishkis and Necroz (Ritual spamming) have a much different play style compared to the Ice Barriers (Lockdown with Synchros), thus implying difference, a ritual theme is only prevalent in a couple cards of ice barriers out of a total 18-20 Ice barrier cards, and in terms of what does connect them when it comes to lore, its mostly just a bunch of crappy to decent cards that aren't connected to any archetype which you would overlook and forget about as a result.
I also forgot to mention a single tidbit of information that connects them to the Ice Barriers whilst not outright stating they are descendant from them, this is also considering that the final event in the first duel terminal story line was Trishula freezing the entire planet. Which presumably caused immense casualties, as you never hear of several archetypes from the first story ever again. So forgive me if I didn't think that the Ice Barriers became Gishki.
@@heckelsofsheckels326 All lore about the gishiki and the necroz says they use the relics from the ice barriers to mutate themself in distorted monster, gishiki, and to use the power of legendary monster with enfase on the ice barriers dragons, necroz. The ice barriers become some kind of legendary tribe wich the relics have some power that allows for rituals.
Surprised that you didn't bring up Water Hazard helping with swarming and Synchro Summons, but as someone who played Ice Barriers, I agree with what you said. They're largely obsolete, but still better than the LotW archetypes
Man, way to strike while the iron is cold, rata! I think you need to chill with these archetypes from as far back as the ice ages. I'm sorry if this comes across as a bit cold, i actually think your content is very cool, and you seem like an ice guy.
Eh I wouldn't call it upper tier. Its just a fairly decent otk deck as it can pop a card and bring out around 6k damage a turn. though it also bricks a lot, making it a bit less than top tier.
I had sh*t loads of fun with a hybrid ice barrier/frogs lock down and Wetlands beatdown deck. If I remember correctly, it had a fair share of direct attack options and 'nope' cards.
I play ice barriers casually, mostly bc I love the artwork. With the new Graydle Slime and Eagle, Aqua Spirit and Undine, they're actually fairely decent. Obviously nothing near any Tier 1 (or even Tier 3) Decks but fun to mess around with with your friend. It's fun to pull of a complete lock with the dog, dai-sojo and guards.
Clem de la Clem also running the aquarium cards for added protection, and the barrier statue of the torrent to lock out all non-water SS, my build wrecked locals back then.
I keep having dreams that I'm tag dueling with The One Whose Shape was Snatched; things look good until he summons his boss monster, Shapesnatch and we lose.
xseaver I think Iron Chains had a really cool idea but they just never expanded on it. Given what they already have, it would be incredibly easy to make new support for them.
I like watching these old videos to see Rata needlessly complain about Toad. Waaaaaaaaaay more problematic cards running about nowadays (and back then).
Well but atleast they have 3 level 4 Spellcasters (and all of them are OK atleast) and 4 lvl 2 Aquas (Full wetlands beatdown setup i guess?). And you will propably only play these and maybe Defender other than any kind of boss monster.
Reason they can't easily summon the ice dragons is because they were never meant to be released since they were pretty much flying WMDs that would end the world if they were released. Same reason why mirror hard counters the ice dragons because it is what they used to keep them sealed. Mirror is actually supposed to be a hard counter against a player who you know will be summoning the ice dragons.
Reminds me of Evently Matched and its adjacent cards countering Six Samurai despite being Six Samurai themed cards. Its a reference to the storyline the cards are depicting, where the kagemusha challenges and duels Shien in an attempt to kill him.
Lore wise, the ice barrier dragons were never meant to be released which explains why A. That mirror bullshit exists And B. Why they suck at summoning their synchros
Man this was an amazing video and definitely one that was a long time coming but well worth the wait. ^^ My only question though is, if PETA can't even save toad now then, doesn't that mean he's on thin ice? I'll see myself out for that one...
I love these videos. They're great to have on while multitasking (making food, folding laundry). Could you do a video about Watts? They're pretty unique as the only direct attach archetype to see play (Earthbound's never caught on), they have a collection of double-attackers, and the Watthopper lock used to be infamous during the days of the Samurai and Inzektors.
Hey RANK10YGO, do you plan on doing an Archetype archive on Ancient Gears in the near future? It's a very underrated archetype and I'd love to see it getting a little more attention, specially now that they have a very sweet True Draco synergy. Update: Also, new fusion monster: Megaton Ancient Gear Golem
The mirror's bizarre effect was another case of lore theming. The mirror was the magic item used by the ice barriers to entrap Trishula. That is why it seems to counter its effects despite being an ice barrier card and having Trishula designs in the card art.
Honestly, Ice Barriers have one of the coolest asthetics and I love them but the whole archetype was just so bad, they didn't have a consistent theme even though their artwork is so good. I'm actually happy they are getting SD support so they become playable. I'm not even hoping they become meta, I just want them to be playable
@@DTDplays the theme is about locking down your opponent with a number of monster preferably spellbreaker, they just need a card that give them extra normal summon and when a ice barrier monster is summoned you can add 1 water monster with the same level. If they have that good luck breaking their barrier
The shock trooper makes sense to a degree.a good amount of water monsters bave effects related to discarding a water monster to get a effect than discarded monster triggers ots effect.like Atlantians and mermails ect ect
I remember using this deck back in High school and it was pretty unbeatable, but it's way to slow for any competitive play. I love this archetype, but it could use a lot of support :3
Give them pendulum summoning support and problem solved. A scale of 1 and an opposite scale of 9, this way you can spam the field for their synchros and use their mediocre effects more effectively.
May I ask for an archtype archive for Mecha Phantom Beast? I always thought they were a cool archtype that never really got the attention it deserved. I also think their token making could be really good in making link monsters in today's game. Thanks for continuing your good content and being the only Yu-Gi-Oh related channel I still like
