I should watch/listen to Blumenthal more. I have read and listened to Bernard Avishai some - a Jewish professor at Dartmouth and a frequent contributor to Harper’s Mag. Avishai, though he does describe Israel’s main problem as one of religious fanaticism, nonetheless contends that Ben-Gurion’s dream was one of Israel as being a liberal democracy and that the whole problem has been that this aspiration was thwarted by the religious hard-right. He doesn’t appear- as far as I’ve been able to discern- to talk about the establishment of Israel itself as necessitating mass forced displacement or genocide. But I’m not an expert. In any case, I think Blumenthal is more accurate. But I would love it if he - and/or others like him - could comment or review this positive portrayal of Ben-Gurion.
