Hey deezynar, I agree we simply match whatever the existing finish is on any walls. You’ve been busy watching these videos, you must be doing your own project? I warped my bicycle rim last week, I almost throw it away then thought go on RU-vid see how it can be fixed. 15 minutes of watching and fixed it 15 minutes later. Gotta love RU-vid. Have a great day! Morning brarmanini, You don't need to strip the paint, however I would wire brush the area in question to at least etch it as the bonding agent is only as good as what it's adhered to. Thanks for watching and have a good day! kirk Giordano plastering

Kirk, Thank you for the information. I was confused for a bit as I had talked to Lahabra prior to commenting here, who says the polybond material works with only unpainted surfaces. Based on your experience, sounds like I dont need to strip the paint. Awesome. Have a great day. brarmanini

Where can we buy the window foam moldings? Where is a store in south bay area that sells the molds? Anyways for some reason I enjoy learning from these videos, and Kirk is a nice guy that knows how to explain things.
@deezynar
@deezynar 11 лет назад
I didn't explain myself very well. The situation is where a foam pop-out (I think you call a pop-out, a band) is at the bottom of a wood frame wall, but above the grade. When I said I drew the foam 1/2" below the slab, I meant I drew it below the top of the slab but at least 4" above grade. There is stucco wrapping around the foam band and coming back towards the wall horizontally but upside down. The question is, does the weep go at the foundation, or at the outside bottom of the band?

@@elianamichel617 Of course you can. You’d have to remove the wood ones first. I take it the building is already stucco? If so attach the new foam, now apply the primer used with your chosen Acrylic stucco, then apply the acrylic stucco coat.

We live in Costa Rica, where it rains for almost half the year, then you get the strong sun factor too. Our house is painted concrete, and we want to add this molding around all of our windows. My question is: do we need all existing paint removed where the molding will be installed before we have a contractor start installing? Thank you for any advice.

I need to install foam moulding to the exterior of a textured wall. 1.) What kind of "glue" is it you used to attach them? 2.) Also the foam mouldings I have are not cement coated. Is it necessary to coat them with whatever material you suggest? They're not in an area where it will be touched or hit. 3.) what should I finish the edges of the moulding with once it is installed? Thank you!
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 лет назад
Morning Chris Z. it's best to coat properly, fiberglass mesh and any cementitious and adhesive cement plaster will do. Because if you try and mount just the form without a solid and protective face, the wind can blow or loosen off. Cheers, kirk giordano
@justin71069
@justin71069 9 лет назад
Are you supposed to add a layer of stucco on top of the Styrofoam forms in order to match the surrounding texture, or is the idea just to paint the trim work? If you are meant to plaster over the forms, how do you do it in such a way as to not distort the contours of the form?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 9 лет назад
+justin71069 Evening Justin, I generally buy pre coated foam and install, depending on the finish I tell folks to use a paintbrush and paint some watered down portland cement plaster on them, I have on some occasions floated them and applied a skip trowel finish over them. There are many options, the idea is do what you want if you want to them to blend into a particular finish. kirk giordano

Hey Kirk, how did you learn stucco and plastering? Not many guys do it here in Ontario Canada, my boss would like to send me to England to learn the trade. It's a whole new world to me but seems a bit more fun compared to drywall taping. No sanding like drywalling :) Collin

Good evening Danielle Mark, I sort of fell into this trade, an add said hod carriers wanted, 7 dollars an hour, I interviewed for this position got it and hod carried for a couple years. I Asked the plaster's why they made much more cash than me and heard they are craftsmen and not labor. Tried my hand at it while still keeping up with hod carrying duties and found I was as good in a month as most guys were with 5 years training. It was my calling. Best wishes and have a great New Year. Your right, sanding sucks. kirk giordano plastering

Danielle Mark, there are alot of stucco companies in the Ontario Canada, Specially in the GTA. We have a better stronger material that what is offered in the US. such as Durock or Drivit. I have seen alot of Kirks videos and what he does its old school stucco. no one does it here in Toronto, the exterior moulding is put on the back with a T trowel 1/2 round, similar to tiles, for better grip, we use a level on straighten out the moulding we do not hit it with our hands.

Kirk, if you buy foam trim already prep'd with fibermesh and cement, would you not need to add fibermesh between newly installed trim and the wall and cement over the mesh to tie the two together? Or, is simply filling the cracks with poly-bond cement without fibermesh sufficient (just like you did in this video)?

Hello brarmanini , no, the bonding agent you last asked me about is usually a liquid for cement to cement or stucco to painted surfaces. I would recommend Poly-Bond for this work, it comes in a twenty pound bags. You mix it with a drill and apply it to the Styrofoam molds then attach them to the walls, I usually use a nail to hold into place as it takes time for the Poly-bond to dry. La Habra makes this material. Thanks for watching and have a good evening! kirk Giordano plastering

Hi Zade Jweinat, I just apply the paper and wire myself along with the two coats of stucco and match finishes, I usually can charge between $300 to $700 dollars depending on many circumstances. Ifs the windows are installed properly as many of my contractors will do I am on the low side, if they are high in the air, and 30 stairs to get to them plus, the break out is completed by someone who is not willing to properly prepare, cost can be on the high side. Cheers, kirk giordano

Evening ted turnip, you've a better eye than me as I can't tell them apart, and I have created by hand the real thing using templated and levels. I will say this about foam versus solid concrete shapes or sills, foam is safer and stucco walls are far less likely to develop hairline cracks as there much less weight. Howdy NIFTYDRIFTYPROD, Yes EIFS stands for Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems. We used to do allot of it when I was a union man in the early 80s, usually on hospitals and schools. In simpler term it’s styrofoam with a mesh netting and a Portland type of cementitious finish applied on the top. Styrofoam is sort of fragile but with the mesh and finish coat its really strong. Hey deezynar, yes, I have a system which I follow when installing stucco weep screed below the grade. I first apply a few tubs of Sikaflex polyurethane elastomeric sealant along the mud sill or bottom of the ply wood then apply it to the drip or flashing I am using, next I squeeze it where I need it so that it seals the area as best as possible. Yes, RU-vid is awesome. I was trying to find information on installing a weep screed under a pop out at the bottom of a wall. I'm a drafter & was drawing a detail of a wood frame column that has a pop out at the bottom. I never did see what I was after so I just drew the foam for the pop out going a 1/2" below the floor slab & put the weep down there. I don't know how the moisture gets around the pop out to get to the weep tho. Any ideas?

Do you have a video on installing wood trim? We are looking to install 2x4 exterior treated wood trim....for the picture frame look. Our stucco contractor is telling us that if we want the flat wide trim look of a primed 2x4, we need to cut a notch in the 2x4 trim and install a Z bar at the top of the window for the stucco to stick, and prevent water. Do you have a video of this? Is it necessary to cut a notch in the wood trim? Our stucco contractor was trying to push for a foam trim, but we prefer wood. 2x4 around the new construction windows. 2x6 around the garage door.
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 лет назад
Hi DJ Email, the notch he is suggesting is what we call a key for the stucco to go into, preventing a hairline crack, he is right foam never rots, wood does, it may cost a few extra bucks now, but in the long run it's worth it. The Z flashing above the wood protects the top and rear, plus depending on how you install may protect window. Sorry, no video on the wood install. Best wishes, kirk Giordano Plastering

Kirk, I have a similar question as Maria, I watched the Marvin window video, didn't see any drip cap being used on top of the patio doors... I busted out my stucco for new patio sliding glass doors, they are in and now I need to repair the stucco around them. If I want to add these foam trim pieces, do I put the trim on top/over the drip cap? Or does the top foam trim need its own drip cap? thx!
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 лет назад
Morning Jeph, We don't install the windows or doors, however the majority of them come with the metal or more often plastic Z flashing for the tops. The Z cap is often unnoticeable, we stucco over the sides and tops as usual, if you look closely you will more than likely see the lip coming down the top of the window only about an 1/8 of an inch. Most foam molds do not need drip edges, say for example, if molds were to be placed around an entire home such as a belly band these foam shapes will have a sloped edge to allow the water to run off, not go behind. Best wishes, Kirk giordano

Howdy Tylor we attach the foam with poly bond made by La habra, when we cut them we use a very sharp and new blade with many teeth or a cement masons blade, we start by spinning the blade as fast as possible then allow for the cut, this way less fibers to stray.
