I am from Norway and remember the accident very well. It was on the news every single day for several days. I have watched the documentary many times, equally impressed as I was moved by the group of friends who dived in secret to retrieve their deceased friends. The police never opened a case for the illegal diving and no one was charged or convicted. Everyone understood that they wanted to get their friends out. A great video with the production quality of Blue World.
Brother i thought that the people of norway dont know how to speak in english.. Seing this i am surprised. So dear.. I would like admit myself in any norway university.. So can you help me by giving me some information. If you can i will be very beyyer for me
This is the cave diving tragedy that got me hooked on all those Mr. Ballen stories, dive talk, and this channel too! Such a crazy story. RIP to the 2 who lost their lives
Great video Mr. Bird. I'm glad you made it out to Norway for this experience. The balance between reverence, macabre and the beauty of exploration was perfect. Keep them coming and I will keep watching.
FINALLY! I have been waiting for this episode for several months by now, since you teased about it probably 5-6 months ago. And as I suspected, it was an epic one! Well done Jonathan and Todd! :-D
I watched the documentary with my dad when it came out. I remember him telling me about it and how we should watch it. I never thought BlueWorld would dive it! This is hands down one of my favorite cave dive segments yet, and I love that you explored the dry section of the cave as well. So fascinating!!
Thanks Raymond! We had so much fun. The cave itself is really only dangerous in the super deep section. The part we did was not terribly deep (barely more than 100 feet) and spacious. It's just COLD! And going in through the ice adds an element of adventure. We went in the winter because it was more of an adventure to dive through the ice, but we had also heard that the water is clearer. When we arrived, Ina told us that the water is about the same visibility all year around. But it's cold all year around too. It was fun! And I expect to see some cool adventures from your big Hawaii trip!
I really appriciate your suffering/joy of doing this and other cave dives so I can see it! I'm a rec diver for life so no caves for me. Be safe and I hope you can dive until you're 80
Seeing people who are going such places always makes a question of what is the power that pushes them there. Being simply under ice is an advanced skill, but under ice cave is fascinating and twice dangerous at the same time. Congrats, heroes!!
What an adventure! I appreciate the way you highlighted the safety precautions you were taking, such as doing a test dive to see if you could handle the cold. You do some crazy daredevil dives, but you never encourage people to follow in your footsteps without adequate training and safety policies.
Heyo Jonathan! I've been learning much about sharks, dolphins, and much more thanks to you!! The name's BrennenSnake founder of the soon existing Snake Corporation I look forward to meeting you in person someday
I used to watch them on sky TV eith mum and never thought while now to put diving expeditions into uou tube search box to see what comes up was the cave a greeny colour like that or was that with your lighte
Today I've been diving in 35'C and I was complaining that it was to hot to put on all the gear standing in hot sun. And now I see this movie, and I don't complain anymore :)
It's actually more pleasant to put on a drysuit when it's cold. I hate getting all sweaty putting on a drysuit when it's hot outside. Then you get into cold water and all that sweat gets clammy.
There is no such thing as bad weather, only improper clothing. Next time Jonathan most probable will have heated undergarmet and maybe also heated undergloves. Those save dives in cold water I know.
I love, love, love your amazing and beautiful videos. Thank you so much for filming your adventures and taking the time to edit, add voice over and post for us to see!! ❤❤
Love to see you guys going for the Plura cave. I have seen the documentary many times and I think its grreat that you are filming the side again. Respect!
What an achievement! Very impressive to do this without heating. I didn’t know this was even possible. Great diving team and going to check out the documentary.
haven't watched the episode yet but heard of this cave from a caving disaster video, a bit nervous but knowing you uploaded it means you survived it, still leaves me a bit nervous watching
I love Saturdays and when Jonathan posts..sat down with breakfast and coffee and this video..im not going to lie i was nervous when i read you dived this cave because of the plura tragedy but Jonathan and team are true professionals!❤
Truely great show! I love caving, been in the best in WV. And Cenote diving is becoming my favorite! Too old and too poor to do CCR and cave dive certified so it is wonderful watching these dives vicariously. Love you guys keep it up!
so this episode is my dream, because my biggest dream ( in diving) to dive and swwim in cold water like this. As usual, nice work, and - again- can't stop thinking about - the great - Bruce Zimmerman's work for the beautiful soundtrack and how it makes me feel like i'm in the dive or throught the whole trip!!! love you all and wish you a great continuing! Love from Tunisia
Thank you John for a more relaxing exploration of Plura. Ive done deco diving and studied that whole Jaris saga in much detail. It was all such an epic. Those underwater cliffs at Stein would have been fun to descend. And I really like and respect Sami and Jenny. And Jani too. They're all such Vikings!
Thanks for this great video. After watching the Diving into the Unknown, Plura cave was a scary site for me! Now watching your fun dives eased the tragedy a bit. Btw, I did not know KISS sidewinder are certified in Europe and can tolerate such cold dives! Great to know!
They make scrubbers that have syntactic foam insulation if you really want to do long dives in cold water. For a couple hours, the standard scrubber on a sidewinder will last longer than I will. If I had heated undergarments and was prepared to do 4-6 hours in the water, I think you would want the insulated scrubbers.
The Sidewinder isn't CE certified as far as I know yet, but that only limits sales not usage. You just need to buy it outside the EU. XDeep's owner bought KISS and is working on CE certification.
These guys crack me up with there "cold" 34 degree diving,,, well I welcome you to winter diving in the upper Midwest. No joke my 10 year old daughter and I ice dive all the time and we don't use dry suites, 8mil with hood and gloves, that's it. But nowhere near as long as they are under, I'd love to dive this place
Appreciate you guys traveling so far to brave a blizzard, HIGH WINDS 😉 and freezing water in order to bring this cave to life for people like me who will never get to dive it. Its a shame that it has the reputation it does but that just goes to show how much caves like this depend on what happens to the people going in it. And what heroes Sami and that group are, joining a team to illegally retrieve their friends. PS You should never drive in a drysuit that says "DUI" on it!
I watched that documentary few times. Really moving piece of film. Never thought that you, Jonathan will go there and make a show there. I am glad you did it. What about Orda Cave in Russia> :-)
I am so absurdly jealous of your life... Except for that water temperature. I think I'd have to have some kind of hot water circulator in my dry suit. I'm also kinda jealous of the stew after a super cold day outside. That might be one of my favorite things - first few bites of a gumbo/chili/stew after working outside all day in freezing temperature.
Sorry chaps, but Pozo Azul was already nearly 10 km long by 2013 with 3 sumps, and 4 was passed that year. Its also worth adding the rescue divers you mentioned didn't stop because they thought it was too dangerous they were given quite strict limits by the Norwegian authorities and as the official team, they couldn't break them. Im quite good friends with the rescue controller, who gave up diving after this as he got tired of pulling out bodies. The two official rescue divers were Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, you might recognise their names from another rescue in Thailand so their not ones to give up when it gets a bit grim.
We are aware of the nitty gritty details, but this video is not about telling that story. There was a whole documentary about it. We needed to summarize the back story in about a minute.
The scrubber can be less efficient in cold water so you try not to exert yourself too much and don’t plan for the scrubber to last as long as it would in warmer water.
❤❤ Your videos they're still amazing is what I remember when I was little and they still keep up your great work I really do enjoy your videos even been I was a kid I watched your videos keep up your amazing work❤❤
This dive is very difficult considering master the dry suit and nearly freezing water temperature also long cave dive and managing all equipments underwater and filming at the same time. Truly big thank you to blue world and Jon Btw, I lived in Alberta Canada so I can relate the cold. I do ice fishing and I’d put my hand in the lake when it’s -20C
Very beautiful but to me you guys are superhuman and a different breed. Do you think that the heating suit under the outer suit is effective? How long would it maintain the heat and do you feel it's something that should become more popular and a requirement for diving in freezing temperatures underwater? Excellent video guys 👍🌊🩵🥽
The people who do this kind of diving all the time have very effective heated suits. They require a lot of power, so they have to carry some pretty big battery packs.
@@BlueWorldTV Ah I see how that could be cumbersome perhaps dangerous when maneuvering through different angles. It would be great if some time in the near future a smaller more compact battery pack could be developed. Thanks for your reply 🩷🌸
This reminds me if another sad cave diving incident that lead to a second death while an attempt was being made to recover the body. I don't remember where it was, but the documentary is called "Frank Not Coming Back."
Never really wanted too cave diving, but artic diving is something I really want to do, even though I do not have a Scuba licence YET! I will defo go artic dicing one day.
Jonathan here's where I'd love my full face mask! Of course I guess they don't make a FFM rebreather system yet right? I used to paddle whitewater in the dead of winter, the water was always warmer than the outside air. But this looks insane!
Sorry for asking. Im completely a noob.. Before diving what are those little cereal thingys you put on the little container? The things you get from that whitish color dispenser. In the dive prep room?
How do air chambers in caves get fresh air that is breathable? Also, do you have concerns about high concentrations of toxic gases, or radioactive radon?
In the case of Plura, there are cracks that let plenty of fresh air inside. They are not big enough for people to get through, but the air in there is quite safe to breathe. They have actually tested it.
How did you keep the regulator in your mouth with this cold ? 😮 I once did ice-diving in 2 degrees C, my lips were so numb i had to stop after 30 minutes, i couldn't keep the reg in there, had to hold it by hand 😅😆 Guess cold water diving is a nope for me ! 😅😅 Now i'm excited to see the video on next year's dive in the hot springs of budapest, that'll definitely contrats a lot with this one !
Hey, Great video as always! Did Ina and Jani by chance tell you they got married inside that air pocket in 2019? It was streamed live and made it into Guiness World Records.
Atleast it is Norway but it ain’t so cold here i walk half naked almost EVERY day even in winter but i never saw those News with that Because i was only 1 year old
