an brilliant performance of tamed brutalitty incarnated..u can feel it trying toiget out ...that energy inhis take...i dare to say there wouldbe no Arcturus without HEllhammer!!
I saw this clip a few days ago and it prompted me to go and listen to Abrahadabra and In Sorte Diaboli back to back and Daray's awesome in his own right, but HH's fills, rolls and cymbal work is just incredible. I don't believe in saying HH is better than Daray, or Nick Barker's better than HH, because comparisons would simply be nit-picking and the three of them are simply marvellous in their own right. But back to Hellhammer... I love this video and thanks for posting!
i second that what u said about drumemrs.i see where u come from. Both mentioned arer craftmanship and job like appproach wiuthl;ittle to none own signature patterns.while HEllhammer is to be recognised in intro his way he plkays accents and throws bold patterns - music complementing parts/...pure artist in adjusting that beast into such pleasant sounds!
Wish Chuck Schuldiner had met J.A. Blomberg in early 90's.Can only phantasize what the outcome would have been.Sean Reinert is awesome, but HH isnt human...:)
@Jeaster6 Yeah I know, it's your opinion and it's ok :) I meant to say this to anyone who perceives bands like football teams, and like it's cool to be a fan of one and hate another.. People need to be more open minded about this stuff.
I prefer hellhammer and I tell you why. Imagine hellhammer playing in nile... piece of cake. Now, imagine kollias playing in arcturus... kind of weird. I don't think kollias has that kind of feeling to play in arcturus... just saying.
Hellhammer is too good in his own craft, simply an excellent musician, but Nicholas Barker is just another level, you can compare the complexity of their drumming in their respective Dimmu recordings/performance and realize that Barker is way ahead, however, HH is a jewel and that is why so many band recruit him. BTW, Sean Reinert is actually more complex at his playing than HH... Sorry ;)
creativity and speed two different things.Actually, even Barker said himself that HH was a mastered in his genre.I like both for different things, complement each other.:)
I disagree with you, HH's work in the album In Sorte Diaboli is flawless. And he did 32 on 290 bpm, dont forget that ;) Nicholas work in Dimmu is great, dont get me wrong. But HH is a beast on the drums, who is best? I dont care
Christian Berg Hellhammer did an excellent job in that album as expected, but he overdubbed bassdrums tracks to sound twice as fast (there is a youtube video of that), sorry that is cheating and as far as I know, Barker have never done that, indeed he sounds live the same way he sounds on studio in matter of speed.
Javier Rojas Martínez I've listened hellhammer's drumming many times live, and he also invited me to listen to mayhem's soundcheck. He can do that double bass speed live. No overdubs.
