I love both. And used to prefer the ardbeg. As I have gotten older the laphroaig 10 is the one thats always on the shelf. It was also the first Islay I fell in love with about 20 years ago. Hard choice but a fun problem to have!

Laphroaig 10 is good, especially for the money $35-$40. But the first time I had Ardbeg 10 is was so much more complex with an earthy peat richness. Ardbeg 10 wins every time for me. Now Laphroaig Cask Strength is another story. Love it! Even more than Corryvrecken sometimes! Nice comparison, can't wait to see round two! Cheers!!!

Btw, when you do side-by-side smelling try to keep a small dish with coffee beans next to you. Sniff the coffee beans between sniffing the whiskies to clean your sense of scent. It's a technique used by perfumeists but works really well for cleaning the nose for any scent :)

We need to pass a law saying added coloring needs to be displayed on front of the bottle. With that said, Ardbeg pairs better with food and other drinks, Laphroaig is saltier and earthier, but the boldness makes it better if youre drinking scotch by itself and not pairing.

Laphroaig for me. Though they're both top notch, however I think the texture of the Laphroaig is nicer, it seems more oily\thicker etc. I find there are more identifiable tastes in the Laphroaig and more of them. It's just lovely though I don't think either of them is an everyday whiskey. It's like drinking a hospital through an ashtray with a tad of fishyness. Just lovely.

I would probably prefer Ardbeg over Laphroaig, slightly, though it's a bit fruity, but today Laphroaig 10 is about $43 and Ardbeg 10 is about $68 (Total Wine) (The PC 10 is $77). I really like Laphroaig so the extra cost of Ardbeg is not quite worth it to me.

Laphroaig 10 was my go to Islay whisky for years in the days before I was a whisky nutcase. These days I have some issues with it. The 40% ABV for the U.K market seriously pisses me off. It's obviously coloured and filtered and I understand why Diageo do that but the ABV deducts points. I have no such issues with the Ardbeg 10. Ardbeg wins this for me. Good intro.

think I will test Laproigh some time. I tested Ardbeg 10 and I'd give it a 6 out of 10. Aroma/Smell 7: Lovely Smoke Finish 10: Lovely Smoke with a fine hint of Charcoal but pleasant. Long lasting..five minutes or more and aromatic high quality tobbacco. Cigar. Gentle Leather. Palate twenty seconds : 3. Discusting. Ashtray, Burnt Tires, Old shoes, worse than Snakewine made from Scorpions. A drip of water probably opens up gasoline. A short Stomach pain. Still believe I will come to love Ardbeg when I get older

Ardbeg 10 definitely triumphs over the Laphroaig 10 (43%). Its the sheer balance of flavors where Ardbeg wins. The smoke, the savory meats sinking in the briny sweetness, akin to maple glazed bacon and barbeque sauce. It is just delectable. The Laphroaig 10 cask strength on the other hand will given even the Ardbeg Uigeadal a run for its money. The standard bottling, albeit iconic has considerably diminished in flavor over the last few years.

I did not enjoy the Ardbeg 10 both times I tried it. And I love my Laphroaig 10. I think the Ardbeg is pure smoke, no complexity at all. Laphroaig on the other hand has so many layers. Ardbeg 10 best quality v price pleated Whisky in the UK market. Laphroaig 10 is also good but not at the same level in my opinion. IMO these are incomparable for those who can only get the Laphroaig 40% because of the abv difference. Would be better to compare the Ardbeg 10 to Laphroaig Quarter Cask (48%), now you get something going. For me the Laphroaig has the best nose of all the Islay whisks for its beautiful marine flavours, the only nose who's close to Laphroaig would be Talisker 10 (of Skye) which has great marine flavours on the nose as well (45.8%, with added colour, more spiciness & sweetness, a bit less peat ppm). On the palate Ardbeg has a slight advantage over Laphroaig for extra complexity. All in all, I recommend having both of these on your shelf - Ardbeg 10 & Lahproaig Quarter Cask.

Laphroaig 10 has been suffering from inconsistency over the past year or so. The last two bottles I've purchased have absolutely been both underrated (for Laphroaig 10) and over-colored IMHO. Ledaig 10 would've been a good bottle to toss into this shootout. Also, Bunnahabhain Ceobanach is a 10 yo (or was? It said it on the back label), but it's bottled at a much higher ABV than the others, so it wouldn't be apples-to-apples.

Sir what is the difference between peaty and smoky whiskey ?
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies 3 года назад
GREAT QUESTION! The primary difference is the sources of the smokey flavor. A peated whisky derives its smokey character from the burning and smoldering of peat (a decaying organic material, usually from the ocean) under barley so that the smoke adheres to the barley. This provides not only a smokey character but also oceanic notes of seaweed, tar, iodine etc. BUT, you can also add smoke to barley by burning wood to dry a barley which adds a smokey character but not any oceanic notes. So, a distillery could use hickory wood, cherry wood or whatever to add smoke flavor similar to using it to smoke meat. Andalusia Distillery in Texas does some excellent smoked Single Malts. I hope that answer helps.

Laphroig 10 was my first Scotch ever as an anniversary gift, and probably not the best way to introduce someone to Scotch, but man was I glad I was. Hooked ever since. Both are great drams and so symbolic of Scotch in general no matter where you go, you will find one. Hmmm an Ardbeg Cult heathen eh? The League of Laphroaig will come down upon you and smite you for that Ardbeg heresy. Jokes aside great comparison, my background leads me towards more maritime, salty and less sweet flavours (Pacific Islander). So Laphroaig it is for me

I prefer Ardbeg 10 to Laphroaig 10... But Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength is my favorite whisky!

Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength is a WHOLE another class of whiskies. Might be interesting to compare a Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength with an Ardbeg big hitter like Corryvreken....hmmmm..... maybe.... I'll do a video!

@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies Please do! I have a bottle of Corry open (old label) and a few unopened Laphroaig batch 007's! I think I still know the winner though...
