I think they are getting worse for sure. I heard their head artist left and was replaced, that's when the models started losing their appeal. They rush them out pretty quickly every month, and I think that plays a part of the quality decline. I would much rather them take extra time to make beautiful models than getting rushed, muddy, and awkward animals that no one wants to buy or use.

At this point lots of new animals look crappy, and some dont have right proportions, for example: the french bulldog, its torso is shorter then a regular french bulldog. The head is almost bigger then its body, a real french bulldogs head isnt nearly as big. The eyes are way to big, the eyes are bigger then its snout. The snout is also pretty small. Its ears are social distancing or something, the ears are farther apart compared to an image of a french bulldog. The tail is so small, at first when i saw this animal jam animal i didnt even notice it had a tail and ajhq just forgot. Even though a french bulldogs's tail is short and small, not this small- The front legs are almost 2 times bigger then the back legs while a regular french bulldog's legs are about the same size, the back legs being the smallest bit tinier. The front legs look too big to even be able to hold its body without always flopping over. There is more i can go over but i already broke my arms -catswampy-
@@probablysarcasm7510 yeah but the thing is it looks good. animal jam has never had exactly correct anatomy but they made it cartoony and look good, but now theyre focusing on either making it look exactly like the animal and very realistic or look nothing like the animal which makes it look kinda weird (sorry if my english is bad im mexican)
I do agree some animal designs could’ve been more better, when you previewed the cheetah in the vid, I don’t like it’s lump near it’s front legs, but nevertheless, I still want it. I’m collecting any animal whether good or bad, I just need the cheetah and koala to complete my collection
Making 3d art is super hard.. I cant even make a bed or a table.. And the worst part is that when I tried to make it, it doesn't save my work and it costs an immense amount of sapphires just to make one art depending on how many blocks there are. I wish there was like a token you could use, like the one for masterpieces...
The sculpting is ez but keeping everything clean (the topology) and as efficient.. Idk can't describe it but point is making game models are hard. You'll need to bake other stuff too (normal map, roughness, metallness thing, etc). If you're a sculptor (only a sculptor, you don't animate anything) then it should be not that hard. I tried retopo while ago and I gotta say damn its pretty hard. At the end I got some tris and n-gons and I have no idea how to clean them. And normal map baking always went bad. Mobile devices are weaker than computers too, so you need to make stuff as light as possible. Ugh AJ is actually laggy for my phone Oh edit: just remembered AJ is not about realism (not so) so maybe you don't need normal map and stuff like that Btw watch YanSculpts, he made sculpting look effortless.
Honestly we just want the old design types but why, the old desgins dosent have gradients in thier body colors like the old ones they have a smoother body color, the new ones shapes are creepy and so detailed and items dosent fit however the old ones bodies do fit in items better and they were more animal jam looking not so fat and so skinny like there are more diffrences between them
I noticed something else on the 3D models… when you look closely on some of them, you can notice many little pixels on the model texture (only on iOS, I don’t see it on android devices) instead of a clean/smooth model, so it seems like as if they just rushed it
Why do I feel like for some of the models, they just low key reuse the feral models. Like the maned wolf gives me sooo many kitsune/senri vibes and the Arctic hare looks INCREDIBLY like the jackalope
The French bulldog is nightmare fuel I must say. I like the design of the animals that don’t look as cute, like the direwolf or the cheetah. (I still love the cute ones tho ngl) I personally don’t like the design of the Siamese cat but it’s just my opinion. Some just look cute and intimidating like the direwolf. The hippo is ugly but I just randomize it and walk around in it as a joke LOL

Yeah, I quit animal jam a while ago because AJ classic is dead and there’s no roleplayers left, I also stopped playing ajpw because the textures and dens are starting to look really rushed and crappy compared to the old versions. It hurts to see this stuff happening to the game that I was obsessed with for most of my childhood.
I really liked when aj had a cartoonish style to ajpw as it fits in with the stylized world unlike the more realistic ones the eyes and body shape don’t really fit with the other animals like put the German Shepard and Wolf beside eachother they just seem off to me
Personally, I dislike the French bull dog. I don’t really like animals with super big eyes- it’s kinda creepy, example like the bull dog, it’s just staring into your soul.
I agree! Animal Jam started making animals with white eyelashes. I miss the classic black lashes. I'm scared they're gonna make a horribly-proportioned human next with white eyelashes and the male build for both eyelashes and no eyelashes, like the peacock!

I agree that the animal designs have been getting less appealing by animal, and in my honest opinion, ever since the maned wolf came out. I know how hard it is to make 3D models and all, but i think aj needs to take a break from monthly animals, even though we love new animals so much, if their designs are rushed and if they look less appealing to players, I just don’t think they will get as much love as the older models, which yes they had flaws but not flaws like the features you listed under the title of cats and dogs which I could clearly imagine which ones you where talking about. I don’t want to throw shade at aj or anything but, if they keep coming out with cats and dogs just to keep their game afloat then they just need to take a break. Or, they could spend more time on the designs to make them look better. Or they could bring an out of store animal back in store to make the community at least a little better feeling about the whole situation, overall this is just my honest opinion, people who are reading this can have their own opinions, I’m not trying to disrespect anyone, but I’m glad that someone finally spoke out and made a video about this. I would just like to say, I've been noticing that some of the newer den items have been getting lazier. The models are fine, but the textures look really off to me. Not all of them, but when the spring ( 2021 ) den item textures look really off to me. I know this video is mainly about animal models, but I wanted to mention this.
It sucks because AJHQ has a 3D model kangaroo in the data base somewhere from AJ jump, meaning that it wouldn’t even be too hard to make something since they could just update that model to fit the game, and the model of the kangaroo in Aj jump is VERY cute in my opinion- I really want a cow in the game :,3
Hiiiiii frost!! Honestly I agree, it looks like WildWorks is focusing on the cats more since they've had more catlike creatures in the game than dog like ones. The foxes resemble cats, so do the snow leopard and the tiger.
ive always liked the less fluffy/chubby/cute and more lanky/realistic designs for animals, especially the arctic hare (my favorite animal). in my opinion a lot of the big, kind of square headed animals with large tails and fluffy bodies all start to look the same after a while due to their similar structure, meanwhile the designs like arctic hare, direwolf, and python tend to stand out because theyre unique and interesting (hence why i prefer to use them). i can totally see the appeal of the big headed chubby animals, though. they remind me of old lps figures and are super cute!
For me I honestly dont like bigger front paws if they all had bigger back paws it would be so much cuter! Also really cluttered patterns I wish they would space them out more!
ik i already commented but i’ve been noticing the models getting worse for a looong time, my main complains about new animal are how weirdly shaped they are they really do look more like they belong in fer.al; the other thing is the textures of the animals and the way animals like the peacock make the colours darker than what u choose and the patterns are so weirdly placed that i don’t even bother using them anymore. the textures on old animals are so smooth and cartoonish then the new animals tend to have weird not-smooth looking textures, the first time i noticed was when the lynx first came out, but at least the lynx looks like it belongs in the game. also, the items often look bad especially when they make weird small headed animals like the peacock, which is my only regret buying if u couldn’t tell 😭😭😭 even the pets and items and dens have weird textures and i don’t like them much at all 😀

Answer to the title: Yes Why?: Because AJ has taken more time on fer.al and other stuff to put alot of work onto AJPW But why are there better designs from way back: Because AJ only focused on 2 games, AJPW and AJC. But mostly AJPW at that time because they wanted to grow their game and make it better. But now that Wildworks has fer.al now, they will not put as much effort into the new animals (also tell me one item that looks good on the Himalayan cat)
Things that I’ve been noticing the recent designs have been doing that make them “weird” or “bad”: Head too big COMPARED TO thin/small body (especially true for pets!!!) Tail too small Everything smooth instead of more blocky shapes Large areas/features that can’t be colored (example: large ears) Colors change shades on certain body parts/fading/shading Lifeless eyes Thin legs
A long time ago, I used to play Animal Jam Play Wild as well too. The game was pretty good and interesting! I had many friends and there were many players. But sadly, I left it like 2 years ago because all animals cost a lot of sapphires... 150 sapphires for one animal!? That's horribly unfair, because it takes weeks and months to collect 150 sapphires. And each pet cost 50 sapphires!? The prices are TERRIBLE! Of course, there are lucky people, who have enough cash, so they buy sapphires but I am not that type of person, who wastes money on games. Secondly, most of the new animals look weird, their bodies and eyes look not normal. Their heads are bigger than their bodies, some of their front legs are thicker and bigger than the back legs. AJHQ has lost creativity and ideas because they only make cats and dogs in the game. Of course, it's very disappointing to leave such a nice game but this game only gets worse and worse. The animal designs and these bots are destroying the peaceful game. In my opinion, the worst part is that AJHQ doesn't listen to people's opinions. Sometimes you just want to punch AJHQ for ignoring the players' ideas, comments, and useful opinions.
I mean i think that some designs are really good, the peacock isn't bad, the german shepard isn't bad either. I actually like the lynx xD. Also I would like ot say that even though I create art with the same stance, they are different xD (if anyone follows my insta). I totally agree with this!
When the husky came out, i was really happy since that was an animal that I was REALLY looking forward to seeing, but it looked WAY too similar to the german shepard model, and since I've already bought it, I felt like it was kinda irrelevant to buy the husky as well. I was really disappointed and frustrated TwT
Arctic hares remind me ALOT of Jackalope in Fer.al. I think the less clean style of Fer.al helps it look better- however it definitely isn’t my favourite. It would be nice if AJ made more animals like the Senri, Dragon or the Phoenix. Their well thoughtful and quite eye appealing.
when the arctic hares first released, I was playing Wild Works' other game Feral a lot, and the hares looked like something from Feral, like the Jackalope creature moved from one game to another

While I do agree that it’s a huge workload, we also have to remember how big Animal Jam is, even though it’s declining. They have a LOT of people working for them. I think that it’s because they know that the game is getting less popular so they’re playing it safe so that people stop leaving.
the newest animal have a weird glitch when playing with a buddy, maybe mini games, the trading, and out to some places there eyes are mess up make me not want to play with them
I find the fact that they make the models seem smoother same with the plushies... They don't really fit their surroundings unlike the older ones, I can't put my finger on why they look weird but to me they don't seem natural I prefer the older ones and same for the plushies since they actually look like a plushy and not a motionless version of the animals the only pet I've disagreed with was the chick just because it's head was ridiculously big and on top of that the eyes didn't even fit the preposition with them being so small. All in all I agree with this video entirely and I was waiting for it to show up.
AGREED!!! The patterns look more pixelated than the older animals (stripes, zigzags, etc.) The dances and play animations are SO lazy. Like, the Siamese can, has almost the SAME dance as the Himalayan Cat. They are rushing these animals!
I definitely agree. Not only in Play Wild though, but even in Classic. Notice how most newer animal models on there (after 2016 or so) have black lines around their patterns and most items look poorly-modelled and rushed on them as well. Oh, and the uninspired dances... AJC and AJPW suffer from that nowadays. I hate the golden retriever's dance. Then again even when we were getting these rushed animals on AJC, atleast we were getting animals. Now all we get is re-releases...
I have been trying to find an animal to have as my main and right now its my Siamese cat I really like it but I'm just not sure. also I don't really have a lot of like good looking items any recommendations. I have every animal but the cheetah, koala , Maine moon cat, French bulldog, Himalayan cat, and peacock. those are all I'm aware I don't have but there may be others.
I think they should have (for the German and golden) a way to edit the bodie parts a bit like a way to subtly Change the tail or flop/straighten the ears Please yeet the French bull dog back into the underworld where it came from Also the Arctic bunny is too lanky lol
I personally love the arctic hare just cause of how masculine it looks instead of a feminine bunny (I’m trans masc). I like the sleek, cool design and I think it fits really well with things like antlers to make it look like a jackalope :D
Finally somone talks about them! Its such an obvious change too. The models Are weirdly smooth, honestly the siamese cat and maybe the mainecoon Are the ones i think look ''the best'' i guess. The peafowl is only in the male gender, and not the female. Like there couldve atleast been a way to change it inatead of just the eyelashes...
I feel like the items look horrid on the new animals its like they dont even try make the items look good on them older animals i think fit the items better and they just give that aj vibe yknow? Not to realistic but also not to wacky but the new animals either look weirdly realistic (not in a good way) or just wacky not to mention the fact they add a new cat or dog every other week makes it like theirs to many of them like Seriously theirs so many animals and yet they choose cats and dogs over and over like back then sure itd take six decades for a new animal but they were creative and look cool not just what ever the new animals are some are decent tho
My problem with all aj models (especially big animals like elephants rhinos, especially arctic wolfs..) is clothing clipping through them. Especially neck items on arctic wolves Oml spikes and some things look fine but some necklaces and neck items look horrific!! Arctic wolves have been in the game for years and I feel like aj maybe could’ve fixed these by now.. no offense but so many items look so bad on bigger animals :( and I love my hippo (cuz I make mine look like a cow 🖤) but it has the same issue as the arctic hare in my option… spikes look so bad on it :( but I think there’s so many little things that make me not like certain animals cuz of the way clothes look on them :( (get get me started on the French bulldog… I was so excited for it to come out and it looks weird..)
Comparing a bunch of new animals and items to old ones really shows the difference in quality. To me, a bunch of new items just look off. I cant explain it well, but they look like cheap plastic toys compared to older items.
If you can see The fox (old one) has smooth curves unlike the jackalope the bunny. It has many (muscles??) and slanted curves that make it look too buff…
tbh i think animal jam is running out of ideas. i think a solution to that problem could be them takeing a break from mothly updates, putting old animals in the shop like raccoons, and actually listening to fans of the game.
Gonna be honest I didn't realize people didn't like the Arctic Hare... I think it's one of the better new designs and looks different enough from the bunny to be worth buying. I use it as a jackalope :3
