As an Aussie I love what you have done with Audio. My house sits on the edge of a reserve and all year round , but more so in spring. The reserve is home to small Corellas, Galahs, Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, Crimson Rosellas and Eastern Rosellas along with magpies, pee wees, willy wagtails and Currawongs. The noise in mornings and late afternoons is insane. Fun watching the Galah psychos doing their acrobatic tricks and yes they are all nuts.

When you were uncomfortable that your Galah was landing on the ground, it made me a little uncomfortable. Here in Australia it's very common to see them walking around on the ground in a group picking at plants and seeds, it's natural behaviour.
@drfill9210
@drfill9210 Год назад
Absolutely! You have a chance keeping a sulfar above ground, but they go for roots from time to time... galahs are primarily seed eaters, I bet the ground feels nice underfoot
@scrubjay93
@scrubjay93 Год назад
It would make them more vulnerable to predators. Prairie and peregrine falcons can take birds out of the air, but there are other raptors that feed on ground-dwelling animals--birds and rodents and rabbits--that could take advantage of a naive colorful bird on the ground, as well as snakes (especially gopher and rattlesnakes in that habitat), weasels, and coyotes. I have watched a long-tailed weasel in similar habitat go crazy chasing a fledgling bird that was flying but having to land a lot, while the parent bird was attacking the weasel. I'm not sure how many terrestrial predators there are in Australia, but I have the feeling the birds there evolved with less predation pressure from them and that is why they are comfortable foraging on the ground.
@deb2722
@deb2722 Год назад
@@scrubjay93 I've never seen anything big or small creep up on galahs on the ground. They are extremely flighty (no pun intended!) The galah liked heights because in nature they live and nest in very tall gum trees. As for snakes etc they are more likely to be at risk from egg smugglers than natural predators. Please don't buy Australian birds. They deserve a natural life in the wild. At home.
@darylcheshire1618

Galahs often sit in the middle of the road in large groups. You slow down so they can fly up.
@RealFarknMcCoy
@RealFarknMcCoy Год назад
@@scrubjay93 Considering that Australia has three of the ten most deadly venomous snakes (the inland taipan being number one), there is plenty of pressure. Galahs usually forage in large flocks, so they warn each other about predators. They are also very adept fliers and can maneuver very well in the air.

Lol so very true but for me it’s sitting on me front veranda, I have so many of the different wild birds here in my small corner of the Aussie Outback, I don’t like seeing them in cages they are meant to be free. When we went through the decade long drought out here locals like myself put out waiting spots for them for both the birds and the kangaroos and wallabies I took to growing the type of plants they loved to eat since the drought broke 18 plus months ago only the birds still visit and I still put food out for them every few days as they don’t need it everyday now, but the cockatoos do let me know when they want their seed after all these years of saying to them “hello are you hungry”😹😹😹they call out hello to let me know they want their treats 😹😹😹

We had a galah (Max), for 8 years and lost him due to not recovering from the anaesthesia after an operation meant to fix a broken leg. Very smart ... too smart for his own good at times, great 'escape' artist, always talking back and always causing mischief. We travelled full time around Australia and he just loved it. Knew all the galah 'gangs' in all the towns and they used to come in to see him whenever we were passing through. The first time we toured, we thought he would not travel well, so arranged for him to be left with a pet shop 'boarding' service for two and a half months. We were told that we could 'log in' via the internet to check in on him during this time but found that this never worked. Upon arriving back, we picked him up from the shop and was advised by the owner that he had regularly let himself out of his locked cage, proceeded to let all the other birds out of their cages and went to town on the camera wiring used for the above mentioned internet service. Needless to say .. I got the distinct impression that the pet shop owner was glad to see the arse end of him. Max wouldn't talk to us for the following week but eventually came round after a few 'treats'. The next time we toured, we took him with us and he LOVED it. Couldn't get him out of the car! As soon as he heard it start he insisted on being a passenger. He used to sit in his small open cage, sitting between the front seats and watched everything while I was driving .. didn't miss a thing .. especially any other galah's or eagles. We used to call the eagles 'big bird' and his eyes used to light up whenever there was mention of one. He had his normal bird seeds (especially sunflower seeds) but much preferred my bacon & eggs and spaghetti bolognese. Our specialist avian vet said he was the 'healthiest' bird he had ever seen. I (we) miss him every day ... he was one of the family.

Watching this bird, it becomes obvious how "galah" became Aussie slang for a clown of a person. The way he just plays in the air, not flying to get from a to b, but just being a clown & playing & enjoying life. Such a difference in flight styles between him & the macaw he was flying alongside! Also obvious why it's good to do this flying in the desert, where he can't just fly off cause he's so excited & then realise he's lost. Great safe way to let him really experience & enjoy flying & I especially loved watching the birds figuring out how to interact with other birds in the air, how to anticipate where the other birds were going & avoid hitting each other. Incredible mental stimulation for them all! Wish my birds would actually enjoy & want to fly :( one of mine has no wing use, other can but hates to. I'd LOVE to be able to do this sort of stuff with mine otherwise

Uuummmm would just point out Australia (where galahs come from) is mostly desert, so the desert is a natural home for this type of bird. The joy they experience in free flight (and fooling around) is unmistakable. Galahs are also very social animals, so it is likely the strong bond with owners is what would bring them back. We loved watching their antics but a number of years later our local council chopped their favourite tree down so we don't see many now although they are still around. Yes, they like eating seeds on the ground in their natural environment. We have a school oval near us where galahs congregate to eat seeds. They spend a lot of time in tres and love swooping from tree to tree. Have you heard the Australian expression "You silly galah" ? It means you're being stupid. No offence to galahs. When I was around 10 I did a free flight that scared me to death where I lost my bird for over a month. Way back in the 80s and there wasn't as much tracking abilities as there clearly are now. Thankfully I did this right in my back yard because where I lived was very wide open but it was the desert and the natural fears were very overwhelming..heat, snakes, coyote, etc and I refused to close my bedroom window when I was in the house. One night while I was sleeping he just came home and was next to me when I woke up but I was so scared to do it again and haven't. Seeing this though, it really opens me back up to the idea, especially knowing I wouldn't have that fear or emotion as I did at 10 that I would now. I'm so happy I came across this video!!! I'm sorry for the long comment but it's just amazing seeing the huge difference in the last 30+ years.

I didn't think it was so long... Just as long as it needed to be to tell the story, no waffle. I was interested in what happened (naturally I was delighted to hear your bird came back!)

@@richiehoyt8487 thank you...I was so happy he came back as well. He was with me for only 5yrs until we moved to a colder climate. So my aunt adopted him from me and he's been with her since, almost 35yrs now.

Galahs are total nutters. Very social and pretty smart. They flock in the thousands where I live in Australia.

This was an unusual random video to come across on RU-vid because I've never seen anybody put so much care into a BIRD. Some people are factory chickens and some people are parrots. I also don't own birds and I am not a pet person. There are hummingbirds in the yard and watching them fight constantly I suppose is entertaining enough.

Pretty off-topic, but does anyone have an idea of what's happening at the edges of her body at 7:44 when it transitions? Is that just artifacting?

You have one Galah....come too where I live and I'll show you hundreds of them........Whoever named them Galahs was so appropriate as in the wild there crazy.

Yup. I've seen them hanging from branches upside down. Also saw one fly out of a tree, not by working along a branch and taking off, but just from inside the tree basttering its way out, feathers and leaves all over the place.

In case you did not know. A Galah is also a term for someone who is a bit of a fool, stupid, etc. Sometimes not necessarily in a derogatory way. So I would say that Galah's do tend to be a bit silly in nature :) I do have a failry large flock of cockatoos that roost in the trees near where I live. Always nice to see them come in to land and make a rukus when settling in for the night.

What a nice colourful Video! and reading some of the most recent Comments. I've had a soft spot for .au and .nz for many years and reading Aussie Comments is so nice to me (I blame it on the old "Skippy" TV series). Our lands were united many eons ago. Kind Regards (from another land under the Southern Cross)

I think it's cool he'd land on the ground... Reckon it shows he's super relaxed, happy & feels safe with you. I'm in AU & as others have said, they muck around on the ground a lot in the wild. I live near a golf course, they drive the golfers nuts because of it =D

Yep, any Australian cockatoo's are nut jobs> We are from the Land Downunder. I have had Galah's for over 40 years, and most of them are fruit loops. They are just cheeky monkeys covered in feathers

Great vid, and thumbs up, but you'll need massive windscreen protection on the microphones if this is to go on. I was just about ready to turn it off after three minutes or so or "whack whack whack whack..." wind noise.

i'm australian and have wild galahs that visit regularly, they spend a lot of time on the ground walking around looking for food so i wouldn't worry about that.

I live in rural Southern Australia where wild Galahs are an everyday visitor. We call people who make bad dad jokes or act goofy ‘galahs’ Yes the galah lives up to the hype they are goofballs in the wild

I imagined all the birds squawked with joy to be up in the air, doing what they were meant to do! I admit, it does seem scary, because at least I was told that parrots of all types have no homing instinct. You really must have built a strong relationship of trust and love so that the birds will automatically return to you.
