Understanding the intricate makeup of a narcissist unveils a complex web of traits and behaviors. Central to their persona is a penchant for deception, as lying becomes an integral tool in their manipulation arsenal. Through deceit, narcissists craft a distorted lens through which they perceive and interact with the world, driven by a relentless pursuit of validation and control. Lying is not merely an occasional occurrence but a practiced skill, honed to serve their insatiable ego and shield themselves from perceived threats. Confronted with a narcissistic liar, navigating the terrain becomes a daunting task, fraught with uncertainty and doubt. Yet, beneath the facade of confidence lies a deep-seated fear - a fear of vulnerability, rejection, and ultimately, loss of power. In the realm of therapy, untangling the web of narcissistic fear poses a significant challenge, requiring delicate navigation and skilled intervention to chip away at the layers of deception and cultivate genuine introspection.

My narcissistic mother lied as easily as he breathed. And what a gaslighter! My intuition told me she was messing with my mind and I distrusted her. When I was older, I called her on her BS and broke off our connection, saving myself from further toxicity.

I see narcissists as living their lives very externally, as if their own inner world is hidden and their image and how they're treated by others takes precedence, so it makes sense that they lie a lot. I'm a people pleaser, so I have also lied a lot in my life, not to gain admiration but because I'm terrified of conflict. People lie for different reasons. I'm not saying it's good to lie. I guess it's just interesting to think how awry your life has gotten to be that it seems impossible to be authentic. I think narcissists have boomeranged away from themselves, as many of us have, in the absence of a secure attachment.

You will never detect "a good liar" because their heart doesn't even skip a beat when they lie, it comes that naturally to them...and some narcissists believe their own lies, while others are fully aware they're lying and expects others to believe those lies, even if they're bad at lying

Narcissists aren't very good liars but they want you to believe their lies so they don't get figured out as to what they're doing. They want you to believe they are a good hearted person, who would never hurt you. Sometimes they lie so much that they actually can believe their own lies. My mother blatantly told me "I'd never lie to you" when I know for a fact she has. It's unfortunate that they resort to such a tactic in order to manipulate you.
@Flotsam7jetsam

That's been my general experience. They'll staunchly never admit wrong to an absolute fault. Your words will drain off them like water. Over time though, if you don't address these issues within yourself, you may get worn down and begin to believe their version of virtual reality in world 2.0. They are the thermostat and everyone else is a thermometer making sure world 2.0 stays intact with their illusion of control.

ThankU! How great/painful. I'd propose with lying itself there's a spectrum. A relative i haven’t seen in 20 years is 1. Narc 2. Liar Amazingly she went into theatre, dynamic performer. She got frustrated, and became a paralegal. Guffaw, both professions traffick in delusions. Not for one second do i think she believes the lies

What about covert narcs who accuse people of all sorts of things, eg events, actions and cruel words, when there was nothing and it's all in their mind. I've seen this done so many times and am at loss to understand why? Is that person they accuse, just someone who has upset their core wounds?

I suspect my sister-in-law is a narcissist. I've cut her off from seeing our son because of her shenanigans (to put it lightly). I see through a lot of her lies, but since my wife grew up with her, has a difficult time to spot her lies. She learned how to lie and manipulate her family, but being on the outside it's obvious.

See I do say if only everyone could take my advice it would be a much better place but ai mean that coming from the very best place. I have the most ridiculously good judgment of character. I just know things. I see through people. I read people very well. Like psychic level. I just wish I could save my loved ones. Its hard to watch. My mother the most as she has no self respect at all after being with a narcissist for 15 years. She was always far from perfect but its the worst its ever been now.

What do you think of traumatized people who bypass psychology altogether by becoming a born again christian instead, then go around thinking this is the cure for everyone else, and not respecting them as people unless they convert? Clearly a problem I have run into in my life. : / Do you ever get clients who talk about the lord as if that's all they need? My first counsellor turned out to be Evangelical, and told me that to his thinking I had "the devil" in me. I politely then fired him.

@@SusieBear-ji3hq How can christianity exist though without the belief that if you don't find Jesus, you're not saved, and will suffer eternal torment in hell? Nice religion. I bought a t-shirt of Jesus doing a face palm and saying, "I never said that." in backlash.

My guess is that most of them are good at lying due to lots of practice and a loose sense of right and wrong. But they are not all great liars. However, I think they all believe that they are good liars, or that they at the very least have the capability to be.

Narcissists often poison their spouses (and children) so that they can start afresh with a new family to abuse. And very often succeed in their endeavor. My mother came close to dying several times because my narcissist father was secretly poisoning her for a very long time. It was by a coincidence that I found out that my father was doing this to my mother, to my brother and to myself. My father used to have dinner served to him earlier than everyone in the family. After him, everyone in my family had dinner. We found it quite unusual that our dinner tasted bad no matter how hard we tried and it always had this strange aroma. It was a regular thing that my mother, my brother and I fell sick after we had dinner. I spent most of my childhood and teenage years vomiting food I had at dinner during night, which resulted in many sleepless nights. It was by an accident that I found a big bottle of transparent liquid in my father's closet. When I asked him what it was, he said it was "a very useful medicine." I found it quite suspicious that it had the same smell as the food we often had at dinner. I suspect he had a few more of these "useful medicine" at hidden places in the house but I could not find another one. Once I figured this out, I remained silent and I did not tell my brother or my mother about this, because my brother and myself were still minors. But, I tried in every possible way to giving a chance to my father in kitchen alone once the food was prepared. So the later part of my teenage years got better. But, then our drinking water started smelling like pharmaceuticals. I tried telling my brother and my mother to try water from other sources, but it seemed like too much hassle to them. I could do nothing for them but I never drank water at home. This brought about brother and my mother received serious physical harm. My mother became a diabetic despite leading a very moderate and healthy life style at a very early age. And my brother developed GERD and stomach ulcers. Another peculiar thing which happened to us was that many medicines which were taken by us became soggy with unknown liquid without explanation. All this stopped happening once we parted ways with our father after reaching adulthood and had gone "No contact" with him. To my surprise, my father was quite vocal about what was going on in his mind. My father often blurted to my mother whenever she fell sick, "If you die now, I would marry another woman immediately." Likewise he often said to my brother and myself, "The son of my friend at office has died at the age of 18. Lived long enough," and statements like that. I hope my life experience will help someone who is undergoing a similar narcissistic abuse.
