I dont know how u read the data but you are incredibly optimistic when you say, a 2070 will probably be on 1080ti lvl. The specs of the cards combined with the launch of the 2080ti and the avoidance to compare performance between old and new versions in the presentation, should be enough hint that, they won´t even come close to "2070 on 1080ti lvl", it´s more likely gonna be "2070=1080+"

Do the demos & gameplay of RTX games impress you enough : NO. all the demos were blurry, low detail and low framerate. The RTX is a great idea, but not powerful enough YET to be sold as a $1200 main graphics card.

Then why do they compare raytracing performance to pascal when it can't even. Maybe it CAN! "A single RTX 2080 Ti is 10x faster than a 1080 Ti in AI and 6x faster than a 1080 Ti in ray tracing" It's probably just the algorithm that makes the 2080 an "RTX" as the op said. Everything else before had just been doing brute force ray tracing. I made that term up, you can use it if you want lol.

The cheapest new 1080 ti is the MSI Armor variant at $630 USD. $130 for a 3 year manufacturer's warranty, s'not a bad deal. or for $645, you can get an EVGA iCX gaming variant. Same warranty length but you get the option to use EVGA's step-up program to get a next gen card down the road, if you decide you want to get a RTX card after seeing what they can do from review channels, such as UFD, LTT and others like Anandtech.
@ericdeltoro8484

@Neo DeOne Until we see real world performance numbers between the 20 series and 10 series cards, its hard to not recommend last gen cards over next gen. We need a chart of how a 2080 TI, 2080 and 2070 perform without ray tracing enabled compared to 1080 ti, 1080/1070 ti, and 1070. Hell, you can even throw in the 980 ti just because how strong it still is. It keeps up, on average, with a 1070.

For me it's situational, a competitive or online game needs to have a high framerate over visuals but in single players games I am happy to sacrifice frames for visuals. 40fps is usually acceptable on the low end. That said that tomb raider video was visibly choppy and if that was the experience with RTX on I would turn it off or disable something else to make up frames...

I combine 'em. 144hz, low input lag, VA. Put it in RGB mode to get rid of black smear in games where it's perceptible (or the ufotests) and I'm one happy camper, especially with a good strobing mode built in! ;p Fully agree with everything else though!

The smart thing to do is just to skip this generation. This technology is great for the future of games, but I don't think the first generation of anything is really worth investing in if you're already happy with what you have. I'd wait for the next gen RTX cards to come out in my opinion. You also are only going to be able to play a handful of games or less that support RTX for a little while anyway.

I held off waiting for this next generation and on Monday I pre-ordered a 2080. Then I looked very closely at the specs the 2080 offered. I was NOT happy spending $860 at all. I've watched for deals online and then was able to secure a 1080ti EVGA sc2 edition for $600 brand new. And so I bought it and then cancelled my 2080 Preorder. When comparing clock speed, memory bandwidth, etc - I personally believe that the 1080 ti will be onpar with a 2080 with Rtx off. I can't see any real reason how a 2080 would beat it in benchmarks and the 1080 ti offers 11gb vs 8gb. Jensen claims Nvidia is for the gamer. A lot of gamers play online where FPS means success or failure. The 20 series cards create failure in that arena. I have been so disgusted with the way Nvidia has conducted business with gamers over the past years, that when AMD comes online again - I'm voting with my cash and going pure AMD. I cannot do it this time around because I desperately need an upgrade and I'm locked in with a gsync monitor. This hardware will be passed down to my kids when it becomes obsolete and from here on out, I'm trying to buy AMD 100%. I'm done with Nvidia and they way they treat gamers.

No research team has successfully dealt with quantum tunneling in a practical capacity, and the tech industry largely depends on the efforts of publicly funded science to make breakthroughs that would be too unprofitable for corporations.

I cannot put into words how disappointed I was when I saw the prices after two-and-a-half years they should have been able to give us better for apartments for cheaper. This is the longest Gap that we've had and is very little to show for it. I used to Game On AMD graphics cards but over the last few years I switched to Nvidia because of the Supreme performance over them. With such a small advancement with this I may end up switching over to AMD again with their next 7nn release.

I think the important thing to remember here is that a new feature means nothing if the card itself lacks the horsepower to actually put it to good use. This sort of reminds me of DX9 support on the FX5000 series cards, technically supported but fundamentally lacking in performance when it's enabled to the point that most people would opt for a less visually impressive code-path to maintain framerates. IMO the next generation or the one after that is liking the smartest time to buy into ray tracing enabled hardware, once the tech has matured and the cards actually have the horsepower to drive 60fps at real world resolutions without costing $1200.

Honestly the tensor cores could be phenomenal for machine learning and an industry standard. I think the ray tracing is just a gimmick to try and broaden their sales for the technology. you are somewhat right, however from what we know, the 2080ti in "raw" performance is not that much ahead from current 1080ti which can be bought at half the price. so why pay 50% more money just for RT that is not implemented anywhere and even on games where it is implemented will drop FPS to 30-50? it is much wiser to buy cheap 1080ti or even used one and game without RT and save bunch of money while having sweet 100+ FPS on all games :D RTX series is for early adopters and thats why people spend premium adopters tax for this kind of technology (which is at current state is next to useless). its the same with intel i5 vs i7 debate for gamers. why pay extra 100-120$ for a cpu when IN GAMES you see 1-2% difference in FPS ? :D yes, sure, some people have cash burning in their pockets so they dont care and always buy latest and greatest, but in terms of cash to value, getting current generation video card such as 1080 or 1080ti is WAY MORE economical and wise than going for RTX series. and no, i will not change my gigabyte gtx1080 for 1200$ rtx2080 card to play games with RT enabled on 30 FPS.

After reaching the 60 FPS i desire, my next goal is always just enjoying the gameplay. Can't care less about a feature that won't make any difference in gameplay. I like immersion sure, but i don't want to spend 600€ for an extra +10% immersion in games. No fucking way man. What else can you want from this oldie? Quiet, cool and not a power hungry beast. But that is irrelevant, i'm reselling it again for around the same price. I grabbed a RX 570 for 100€ with the almost 2 years warranty left recently, thanks to the GPU craze RTX brought. So no GTX 1070/1080 for now, perhaps later. UFD Tech You don't get it... Ray tracing would look amazing on a story driven narrative slow paced game where you don't need high framerates. Refresh rates have always been marketed as giving you better reaction times, and in a game like life is strange or hellblade or until dawn, frame rates don't matter, but the quality of graphics does, and 20 series should perform better than the 10 series with ray tracing off right? So in competitive games and other stuff you can simply turn it off, and when frame rate doesn't matter, turn it on for a much better experience!

Graphically fidelity is absolutely valuable, but people have been laser focused on performance above all else for the past few generations. The only way this foot in the door to new rendering technology could be acceptable to most enthusiasts is if a smaller architecture is coming next year, 7nm to be exact, which I doubt. Honestly this might all just be a knee-jerk overreaction, and the real world results of the 20 series will likely completely outshine 10xx. One major factor everyone skips over is the fact that the CUDA cores have been improved once again, so has Micron's video memory with larger memory bandwidth. Completely new drivers will need to be developed to fully utilize these improvements over the next year. I can't think of any time in recent memory when Nvidia has let consumers down, there's no reason for them to start now.

Can you imagine being used to 165hz 1440p on nearly all of your video games and then going into Tomb Raider with 30fps and 1080p? We are so far ahead in what we call the technological standard for PC gaming that going back to 1080p and 30hz is a HUGE step backwards for a brand new generation of cards. The least I can say is that no matter if it were a cinematic, single player game, 30 frames would be jarring if you’re used to 144-165hz. If people are reporting 30 frames with the 2080 ti, how on earth do you expect the 2070 to preform up to par? Ray tracing is nothing but an early access feature that leaches onto the performance gains of pascal and increase the price by $200-400 of the new cards. They are trying to sell you on RT but it sounds like it sacrifices what makes Nvidia’s cards good.

As I've said elsewhere, "For ray tracing to take off, second generation ray tracing technology from Nvidia will have to be released most likely on 7nm next year and AMD will have to get ray tracing at the hardware level hopefully with Navi. Those releases will have to include some form of ray tracing not only in the flagship graphics cards, but also in the budget graphics cards as well. Games have development cycles of 2 to 5 years, so while rasterization games will get 'RT Modes', it will take roughly 2 years from next year at least before we see games built from the ground up with ray tracing. This is what makes Nvidia's tunnel vision focus on ray tracing so infuriating, ray tracing is the future, but its a 2021 future and gamers in 2018 need to know what the rasterization performance is for Turing."

Speaking as a professional film artist, Ray trace is big in movie making and has been around for awhile (but takes time to render), so if 3D render times are shortened drastically using these cards, then this is a great investment for a 3D artist!!! Pricey at the moment, but I could see that when the $599 card goes down in price most computer artists and gamers will definitely pick it up. It's already where the industry is now, so dedicated ray trace cores sound amazing. Film pushes tech and tech pushes film. Every big studio uses ray trace, so adoption seems inevitability. I'd say that for the average gamer/ consumers to wait till prices go down, refinements, second gen RT cards, and better game implementation, but I know a lot of 3D students and artists will definitely be picking this card up asap!

It would be like a much better shading compute unit ontop of the FP32 shading compute units such as CUDA cores... I HOPE... What most of you don't understand there is the fact that the engines which these games are made of, are not stabilised to deliver RayTracing optimisations, because there was no raytracing publicly available to all customers in the past, yet there comes the 15-30 fps you talk about on your review. These games are already built with cached lightning which interferes with the RTX rework, which cause massive fps drops, doing the work 2x or more on an unoptimised / non-implemented engine code. All the game engines chose to have to build lightning on all levels and actors to deliver a good quality of the product because it was the obly method we had for like what, 10yrs now stabilised on a good quality? RayTracing based games will come and you will see them perform very well with those RTX editions. Keep in mind: you can't make a panser cook french fries.

It's a joke to buy a top end card and the biggest selling point is Ray Tracing, but you'll end up getting 30 - 60 FPS at 1080p. Especially since it'll cost me around 1300 Euro. Absolutely disgusting. I'll end up getting a GTX 1080 or the RTX 2070.

Which is why I was surprised Nvidia was pushing so hard for Raytracing in games. I am very aware it's mostly used for animation; (my initial thought was that this would be great for when I'm using Blender/Maya). But it's such a resource hog in games, it's pointless atm. "We've been working on this for 10 years.", I'd rather they work on it for 12 or 13 years and actually make it more playable in games.

I think the main question is not about the 10 series, we have all that data we know how the perform. What we need to ask is why the lack of FPS and traditional performance numbers in Nvidia's anouncement? If we are going to get the hopefully 15-50% increase in fps ray tracing aside, then I can maybe see the price increase not only do we get the step up in traditional gaming performance we also get to see what early ray tracing can do. Ray tracing is not worth 100% price increase alone, not even close. WAIT FOR BENCHMARKS.

I think this will be only a problem for the first one or two generations. While right now maybe most people will turn it off, with the 2180 and 2280 it will most definitely get better. And just like with the VR problem, where Devs were incentivized to develop VR, Nvidia will maybe have to pay for the development of ray tracing until it is fully adopted by the consumer. Just because it is not perfect right now does not mean that we should stop technological progress. Maybe there will be less demanding games, where you can still hit 60 with ray tracing on. That's the same as with a 4k display. You can't play all games on 4k 60fps but people still buy those displays. Following your train of thoughts, just because there will be scenarios where people have to lower resolution to play at 60fps, that means that nobody buys 4k displays, but that is obviously wrong. And devs also have to learn how to work with ray tracing. It's totally new. That's also why on consoles the games at the end of the generation look so much better than at the beginning, even though the hardware didn't change, instead the devs learned how to program more efficiently for the platform. The same will happen with ray traving. I for one welcome the change and can't wait for what will come.

“I’m more about enjoying the game, than I am about waiting to have the very best graphical experience...” Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, for being the voice of common sense. nVidia's efforts to pawn off their defective Quadros to gamers, and then to try to justify this by charging them MORE money than the obsecene amount they were already charging, in order to get some extra reflections off of a pavement is ridiculous. Anybody falling for this is simply unintelligent. End of story. You're a dupe. ESPECIALLY if you've pre-ordered a Green Goblin card before even seeing any independent benchmarks. You're Pavlov's dog, salivating at the prospect of something before you even know if it's a delicious steak or a piece of turd. AMD isn't shivering or quaking in their boots... they're LAUGHING. Laughing at the stupidity of attempting to spin this as anything other than a pathetic cash grab to help nVidia pay for flawed dies that can't be sold for $10,000. And I'm laughing along with AMD. Know what I decided to do with the money I had considered using to buy a 2060 or 2070, until I found out there won't BE an RTX2060, and that the 2070 was going to be $600? I decided to hang onto my still excellent R9 290 for my PC, and bought a PS/4 Pro to play some exclusives, giving AMD some extra cash, and allowing me to try out Spider-Man and God Of War, that's what. I haven't owned a console since the 1980s. Don't feed the Green Goblin!

@jouniosmala9921
@jouniosmala9921 6 лет назад
Lets put things in perspective. 2080 can do 18 tera ops per second in traditional games, while 1080 can do 9 Tera ops. 2080 has 14 ghz memory, while 1080 has 10 or 11 ghz memory. The simply two different type of instructions shaders can handle are given their separate units that run in parallel when executing shaders, what used to be called tflops is now split to tflops and tips. It should be obvious from my description that while on paper it is twice as much computing power, in reality the shaders are not 50% tips and 50% flops which would be the 100% improvement. In 33-66mix it would be 50% performance increase. While in 20-80mix it would be 25% improvement. What it looks like to me that 2080 is going to improve traditional game performance but nVidia is so hyped by its new technology and tries to get as many developers on board as possible, that whatever performance improvement they can get in traditional games is secondary importance to them. They really WANT raytracing to succeed, and not only their new cards.

Where in the crap did you get the 18TFLOPS figure for the RTX 2080? Nvidia said that the 2080 Ti only has 14TFLOPS.
@jouniosmala9921
@jouniosmala9921 6 лет назад
Not flops, but operations. Old TFlops did the work of the TIPS and new TFLOPS in both old and new shaders. Floating point code requires integer operations for address calculations and control flow, and in many old cpu risc floating point benchmarks they WHERE MAJORITY OF INSTRUCTIONS EXECUTED, even if they where measuring flops. In shaders based on nVidias slides it looks like integer operations are significant minority. They simply went from ONE pipeline handling all types of instructions to going to multiple pipelines where different type of instructions are executed. And while integer pipeline is often idle, it still executes in many cycles instructions that would of flops in previous architectures. This is favourable change since integer units are far smaller and less power hungry than multipliers.

I disagree; From a gamers point of view, "switching off Ray tracing", gives you more frame rates, ok! But as a developer, I don't have to make hundreds of texture maps to make the game look real, as Mr.Jensen Huang said, "you just turn RTX on and it just works". This my friend, will revolution the gaming industry. -> You don't have to turn off Ray tracing to play games at higher frame rates. -> You can expect high quality games from small indie game studios. -> Soon you can expect AR(argumented reality) games to have real time lighting effects based on your surroundings (yeah! That just became a possibility with this Turing GPU architecture. And deep learning...., It's not even at the realm of your current imagination, and that's not for this discussion anyway...

Developers point of view? Raytracing wont hide or make bad looking textures look "good". I can render a sphere with a million samples and at 4k but it will still be ugly if the texture is ugly. The same applies to texture maps. Ray tracing doesnt generate them,it only "beautyfies" them,makes them look better, at a HUGE expense of fps. Go play a game with unstable 30-50 fps and tell me does it look "good" with raytracing on. You are clearly not a developer if you think raytracing removes the need for texture maps.

Agreed 100% The 20 series makes itself a hard buy due to early adoption tax, and the fact that by the time the software etcetera has caught up with the new tech the 7nm cards would have dropped at 20 series prices or better because the early adoption tax is gone. Right now, a significant leap in GPU performance is needed to make ray tracing genuinely accessible, and whilst 20 series is definitely a leap forward, it just doesn't look significant enough to justify the investment particularly at that price point. In any case that's just my $0.02, and we don't know how much of a difference driver optimization will make at this stage

My problem with this opinion is with simply one fact that he stated; however he founded the entire video on this fact. It's that the card was performing sub 60FPS on 1080p. He stated that tomb raider is weeks from launch so it should be ready. While I do agree that SHOULD be the case, it makes way more sense that neither the cards nor the game has been fully optimized yet. I'm not saying to anticipate 60fps at 4k with Ray tracing on, but I would expect 75+fps at 1080p with tracing once optimized. We do know that it's going to be a hardware hog, but graphics nerds will still play 1080p 60fps on solo games for that beautiful enjoyment of the latest and greatest tech. Or pay the Piper for 4k 60+fps out of the 2080 that the 1080ti struggles if, even gets to, 60fps on. I feel like running 4k 60fps on highest settings for Destiny 2 PvE will be an absolute delight for me. (PvP would be a different story altogether, but not my cup of tea)
