This applies to South Asians as well, not just East Asians. Skin color is HUGE in India and Pakistan. Unfortunately, being fair skinned is almost always a positive in the area. People discriminate on skin color for marriage prospects, jobs (especially in entertainment), etc. Generally speaking, people in the north are lighter skinned, while those from the south of India are darker skinned. It's a huge problem, with a lot of people getting scammed into skin creams and surgery that cause skin problems.
@HuangYanPing
@HuangYanPing 9 лет назад
On the bright side, it is being looked at. There are now South Asian communities and organizations that advocate people should not be discriminated due to skin colour. This is probably a big issue worldwide. I assume Brazilians too? Africans? Women Of Worth's (The one with the .in domain) "Dark Is Beautiful" campaign being one of such.
@sana14355
@sana14355 9 лет назад
Adnan Ilyas Not only just skin color, but also prejudice in general concerning India and Pakistan. Have you seen the comments section on Indian/Pakistani videos? It's a complete mess! Attacks on each other's religion, social status, sports teams...Ironically there have been quite a few Bollywood movies supporting amiability between the two nations, but it seems few people want to practice such ideas in real life.

Sanica Manglorkar It's interesting because i've always felt the older generations tend to get along better than the youth. I've noticed that it's always either the youth back in the motherlands fighting over impractical rubbish over the internet or It's usually the Canadian/American/British born Desi youth that bicker back and forth. Whereas our parents and grandparents are civil and polite with each other. I'm from a part in North India where there are lots of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs all living nicely together and the cultures mesh. My region is more similar to Pakistani culture than Indian culture so i guess for my people, it might be easier to get along because of those similarities. Not too long ago, India and Pakistan was one land. So our grandparents have more in common in that sense. and well, people back in those days were naturally more polite i think. Show off kids these days are hell bent on taking their insecurities, shame, and internalized racism out on each other. Indian and Pakistani kids living in the west don't want to be associated with each other because of the stereotypes. If anything, it should bring us together and we should kick some racist white ass together ;)

***** I wouldn't say Vancouver is allll that accepting. More so than other parts of North America, yes, but there's a decent amount of violent racist history towards all kinds of asians (chinese, koreans, Indians etc) not too long ago in the past. I have older cousins who are in their mid 20s - 30s that faced lots of shit growing up here. And even i, being a 20yo, remember some pretty shitty events that happened to my friends and I. Also, casual and passive racism is still a thing in Canada. But one important example of racism in BC and Canada in general is the lack of concern shown by the Canadian government and people towards the missing native women.
@Weird_dude265
@Weird_dude265 9 лет назад
IcySync As I understood the problems with native women were more because they were women then natives. I could just be understanding wrong though. Also, what violent racist history does Vancouver have?
@IcySync
@IcySync 9 лет назад
JamesORiley55 It's both because they were women and because they are native. There's a whole other oppression and racist reality women of colour have to face. There's plenty of racist history that i don't have the time to get into but it's there and it's real. Just look at 30 years ago when South Asian women couldn't wear their cultural attire without being harassed and when racist bullying in schools was a very real and serious thing. It still is. Only it's more passive now than it was then but it's just as damaging. Assaults towards minority groups happen and there is never any justice for that person whereas when one of us fucks up then our whole community has to pay for it. I'm assuming you're white so i'm not surprised if you're not aware of these things because it's hard for the privileged group to see it for what it is. I could write an essay on experiences i've had. Violent racist Canadian history isn't even so much as specific events as much as just an on going thing that has only become more sneaky as years went by. Just because we're more progressive and accepting than most western countries doesn't mean we can erase our own problematic history.

@matcharon

+Ellie ; w ; I don't think they think that they are superior. I think that overseas asians just think you're... different? I go to an international school in Taiwan, and like your school, we have Taiwanese kids from different countries. We're all really accepting and understanding of each other because of our similar family backgrounds. When I went to visit the States in the summer, I felt really disconnected from American-Asian-Americans, and they probably felt I was really different as well. I don't want to generalize or anything but I'm guessing that they were so used to talking to Asians that they could connect with immediately that they didn't know how to connect with Asian-Asian-Americans? I don't know. I just feel like we're just a little disconnected from them. We don't really experience the culture they exist firsthand, so we can't blend in with them immediately, and thus leading us to finding other people to talk to.
@matcharon
@matcharon 8 лет назад
+fafara I don't find them racist. I just can't connect with them easily because we don't really have a good conversation starter. I don't keep up with the latest American TV shows and most internet memes just stay on the internet. For me, the easiest way to connect with someone of another culture is to ask something like "so what's it like living over there? Is the education system annoying? I've heard of this and this, do you guys really do that or is it just a stereotype?" It's a really good conversation starter for me and gets a convo going. But when it comes to people who share a certain traditional culture with you, you can't really ask those questions. But it's also really awkward to talk about the latest topics too. Like when one person doesn't know something popular, the other person just goes "oh, you didn't know?" and it just gets super awkward. So I think the problem is that we have the same culture, but a different culture at the same time.
@professionalconch7108

+Aria Deng of course it doesnt apply to all asian-americans but it does apply quite often. there is a saying called FOB fresh off the boat. it's pretty much a word to look down on asian not used to western culture and used often by asian-americans. and im saying this again that not all asian-americans are that way but for my 12 years of american experience i've seen a lot.
@mirrorflame1988
@mirrorflame1988 8 лет назад
+fafara Yeah they won't stop complaining every damn thing over and over again. It starts to get really annoying and we really wonder why we invited them to come back for a visit. Worst part is the hypocirsy - when we visit them they expect us to behave like a native in their country accepting all the cultural norms and values while when they come home for a vacation they refused to accept our values/ways of life even a little and want everything they way it is for them at home.

The only racism I ever got from other Asians is kinda weird. I'm Korean but do apparently look quite Japanese. I used to get A LOT of hate for that (only older people though) from other Korean. Once they knew that I'm 'one of them' though, they turned about 180 degrees and were super nice. Most Asians (mainly Chinese) I know here in Europe are really traditional. Most are fine with their children dating other nationalities as long as they're Asian. Dating a Caucasian (or African or any other possible race) is a big no-go.

@gogumadalpaengi

GeishaVi I don't exactly agree on that. It's not outdated but the anger is going towards the wrong people, the population instead of the government. On the other hand, I can understand someone who's lived and seen a war and feels the way some older people do. I know an old man who's been in a concentration camp during WW2 and still, in 2015, gets all traumatised when he sees a German car... But yeah, not a tolerable problem of course.
@GeishaVi
@GeishaVi 9 лет назад
@Stéphanie OkHee My comment is more in reference to the dislike of mixing races. "Don't date anyone but other Asians" issue. I understand folks getting negative memory recall in some cases. I grew up in a mostly African American town and then to an all White town before finally coming to NYC. So I have my memories of racism from both cultures. The end result mostly makes me more focused on seeing how folks treat me and others. Where when I was younger I might not have paid much attention to it before. My father is Asian, Mongolian & Filipino and he encountered racism from all over the world. He's a veteran and been around the globe a lot. He only wanted to make sure I was educated about the world fully and that I dated someone that would treat me with respect, a decent, productive citizen. He didn't push anything about what race to date cause he also understands you can't judge someone's character based on their race or skin tone. I thank him for that. If he himself didn't have open minded views then he would have never married my mother who is Egyptian and British. I might not have been born. I'm very happy he made his decision, lol.

So true. I lived in Japan and on the news there were issues between Japanese and the small Korean population. I asked a Japanese friend of mine about Japanese/Korean relations, and he said that Japanese people generally don't like Koreans. He even gave an example and told me that if I (I'm not Asian) stood on line, a Japanese person is more likely to offer me a seat than a Korean person who is also on the line. That's crazy to me, but unfortunately this is the world we live in.

Racism between ethnic Asians is quite real. I feel that I understand Japanese culture pretty well since, I live in Japan, my mother is Japanese and so is my husband. My father is (as you can probably tell by my picture) is Black. Some Japanese really do have strong feelings towards ALL foreigners in general. That includes Chinese, Koreans, Americans and halves like myself. Not everyone though. Japan is changing, slowly. Unlike China or Korea, Japan is an island nation. Multiculturalism and ethnic diversity is nearly non-existant. Call it nationalism, or whatever you want, Japanese people prefer Japanese things. NHK rarely broadcasts International news unless its bad or it makes Japan look good. If I asked my Japanese friends to accompany me to China or Korea for free, most would go. A small few, maybe two or three would not be interested even though they have never been, but with enough prodding though I could probably get them to go, かもしれない。

***** I have yet to meet any fellow Filipinos with a superiority complex but I have met many other Asian ethnicities that do. I actually had a really bad experience with a very homophobic, racist Taiwanese guy in college. He was such an a-hole that it came to a point where if he didn't stop his racist, hateful slander campaign against another darker skinned Asian student; he was gonna be expelled. A few of the fellow students where even going to side with him on his homophobic and prejudice thinking. Until the heads of the campus had a big meeting denouncing his behavior and anyone dumb enough to believe his disgusting views. Mind you this guy's father even worked for the United Nations here in the States. So I'm waiting to meet Taiwanese folks who aren't like this douche bag. Cause I'm sure the whole country isn't like him but he did leave a very negative impression, as he so loved to talk about how great his country was while dissing everybody else. So I say the racism at least here in USA is mainly due to ignorance of other cultures and prejudice against skin color. As an Asian American of mixed ethnicity living in American I get BS from all types of people who are just ignorant when it comes to skin tone. A person's skin color doesn't identify their race. I feel this topic they addressed in the video spans much father than just China and Indonesia. It's a problem everywhere. Just cause a person has darker skin doesn't make them less of a human. Just cause someone has lighter skin doesn't make them better. And as far as foreigners in other countries I'd love to see them do a piece on how African and African Americans are treated/ viewed in Asian countries. I've heard both positive and negative experiences but there does seem to be a big difference between how Caucasians and Non Caucasian are received in these countries. In reference to what group of people get treated with the most disrespect in America: I feel it's anyone with dark skin. I'd say mainly African Americans. Yet I put both groups together because I know many folks who aren't African American and they get the same BS treatment of prejudice, discrimination and racism. Why? Cause this country still lingering on stereotypes from generations of negative propaganda, focuses on skin tone, not who or what you actually are. On this I speak from my own experience as well as hundreds of people I've met living here in the USA and abroad. These folks I refer to are Asian/ Asian American and others who aren't.

you left Philippines out, I have seen a LOT of racism in Philippines, dark skin = poor farmer, light skin = rich city person, Many women spend small fortunes on toxic 'skin whitener' products... people from cities are considered better educated, while those from the provinces are assumed to be uneducated, I have heard many stories about "Chinese own crooked businesses" and are all 'thieves' (rather like european views of Jewish merchants in pre WW2 europe) its really quite sad, many older people there remember the Japanese atrocities of WW2, and yet many younger Philippinas are marrying Japanese men because they can be a bit more affluent than the local men.. Hi, I'm Japanese (if you couldn't tell from my name)! I have a really politically opinionated mother and I have to say that she is really racist, but living out of Asia we kinda have to rely on Korean and Chinese grocery shops and every time we go to one if the shops, she always rambles on about how "the Japanese aren't successful enough" and "the Koreans are taking over". She complains about how major Japanese companies are going downhill (such as electronic and car companies) and whenever we buy electronics, I have to avoid asking for a Samsung or an LG product, Just because they're Korean companies!! When my brother started to go to university, she found that a large number of the students were Asian, and the first remark she makes (although not at the people) was about the territory disputes. And that, ladies and gentlemen, may be why I thought, whilst viewing this channel's videos, "are there even any Japanese people on this show???"
@moreshige

Wow, your mom is that typical ignorant Japanese who probably thinks Japan created and invented everything. I bet she doesn't know that a lot of Japan's success economically and even culturally was at the expense of other nations it tried to dominate in the past. Korea, despite it's division, small size, setbacks from the destruction of wars, disease and constant invasions from foreigners is catching up and has the potential to surpass Japan perhaps after Korean unification. There are Japanese who think they're inherently superior, as if it's in their genes they are made for success. If violence is a precursor for the definition of success then, yes the Japanese were very successful.

@jcdenton1635
@jcdenton1635 6 лет назад
+Velveteeens rv That's PART of the reason why the racism exists, but I don't think it's the MAIN reason. In the past, many Southeast Asian civilizations were just as wealthy and developed as their Northern Asian counterparts, if not more so, but this doesn't seem to mitigate racism against them. For example, when feudal Japan was still building their palaces out of wood, Cambodians were erecting theirs out of stone. When Japan built their first artificial island in the 17th century, the Khmer Empire had already constructed many artificial islands 600 years earlier. By the time the Japanese and Koreans developed their first truly unique writing systems in the 8th and 10th centuries, respectively (Kanji and Idu), Cambodians had already preceded them both by developing their own unique writing system in the 7th century (Khmer script). (Note that Japanese, Koreans, and Cambodians all ADOPTED non-native writing from China/India in the same period (4th century), but they didn't actually DEVELOP their own unique writing system until the dates I listed). And of course, ethnic Cambodians reached the Bronze and Iron Age by 1000 BC and 500 BC, respectively, whereas Japan didn't reach these stages until 300 BC. But none of this seems to matter. None of this history seems to mitigate the discrimination against Southeast Asians. The PRIMARY reason why many (not all) Northern Asians are racist towards Southeast Asians comes down to skin color. For some reason, humans have this irrational hatred of those who are darker than themselves, which in turn, informs their stereotypes about those darker people, leading to discrimination. Asians are no different. Case in point, people tend to give North Koreans a pass for being poor because of their white skin. North Koreans are too white for people to attribute their poverty to their race or character, so people have no problem attributing their poverty to the North Korean communist dictatorship, which has been holding them down. But when Cambodians are poor, somehow this translates to them being too lazy or intellectually incapable to rise above their circumstances. Never mind the fact that Cambodia was a booming nation in the 1950s-1970s and was known to the world as the "Pearl of Asia," set to become another prosperous Asian economy and significant contributor to the global market. Never mind the fact that during this period, American bombings, civil war, and a communist genocide brought down everything the country had worked so hard to build and killed up to a third of the entire Cambodian population. Never mind the fact that Cambodia is currently ruled over by a corrupt dictator (Hun Sen) who's been in power since the 1980s for over 30 years (in fact, he's the longest "serving" prime minister in the world). And never mind the fact that Cambodians have had a long and glorious history of rich, powerful, and sophisticated kingdoms and empires, especially the Angkorian civilization, but also Chenla and Funan. Let's conveniently forget the fact that Cambodians developed their own writing before the Koreans and Japanese did. And who cares that Cambodians reached the Bronze and Iron age centuries before Japan? No, let's just blame Cambodia's poverty on their lack of character. After all, Cambodians have darker skin than Northern Asians, so they MUST be less cultured, right? That's how the thinking goes.

It's mostly the older generation. You have to understand the brutality the Japanese caused to China When they invaded. In fact the main reason Hitler decided to try and take over Europe was because he saw Japan doing it in Asia and no one did anything for a long time. The Japanese raped literally millions of women, old people and infants, they performed live surgical experiments on them, I mean it was horrible. The Japanese govt has yet to apologize and acknowledge what they did and they sugar coat the history in schools, this has a caused a lot of animosity as you can understand, it was only 60 yrs ago.
@HuangYanPing

The people who are not affected by the war, but still have these feelings towards other (East) Asians lack the ability to think critically. It may be due to many reasons: Mass Media - Many sources spread their hatred vertically (same-generation) and horizontally (younger). Culture - Older generations hated each other due to their families being destroyed by the war; rightfully so. However, it gets passed down through generations as well. That is the issue. Nationalism/Pride - Thinking your own country is superior just because you happen to be accidentally born there. I assume/hope this will get better over time. The only reason why that hatred still exist is due to ignorant people who keep perpetuating this nonsense. It really doesn't make any sense when reason and logic is applied. My great-great-great grandfather killed your great-great-great grandfather's brother. In fact, you had no control whatsoever to change these events. You could not choose to be born Japanese, Indonesia, Chinese, etc. That's why I hate you and your nation. Yep, makes perfect sense, /s.

+Den Yuan As an Asian to another Asian (I'll assume you're Chinese, by your username), you're wrong. Asian men and Asian women both have a nasty tendency to put each other last when it comes to preference. What IS apparent, though, particularly, in White countries, is the emasculation of Asian men via media and stereotypes, and the elevation of Asian women (who neither know nor care that they are chosen only for their sex appeal), which is why Asian women are more visible and thus seem like the only ones at fault. As for Asian men in White countries, we are bombarded with White beauty standards as well, and many suffer the same effect. Also, adding to this effect is a sort of bruised ego that Asian women won't talk to us, which the average Asian male counters by building up a resentment toward Asian women. Your mentality, however, is harmful, and can easily be hijacked by White people who already have the notion that Asian men are misogynistic and negligent. It is also harmful to yourself, because, despite stereotypes, there ARE cultural differences that DO hold us back from being the best we can be, and we have to fight those things rather than pin the blame on our own.

Racism is harsh in reality, but we have to experience it ourselves in-order to get an better understanding of it, not just for our own sake but for the next generation. My Chinese parent's sometime say shouldn't I shouldn't marry Black, White or other Asians ( Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese etc..) but you're own culture (Chinese) because they done this to us or that, although i was born in Australia, but i clearly disagree with them. I have a friends who are Vietnamese, Loas, Indians, Cambodian etc.. we don't hate each other, although we can get carried away and talk in a negative way, but we still forgive each other and laugh. My thoughts on Racism: - Yes, it's annoying and heart breaking and sad to be bullied by racism - Stand up, be brave and endure it. - Don't always listen to parents on what their thoughst are on other races Black,Asians,White etc... - Tell it your next generation, so they can get a better understanding on how the world is run and how to avoid it.

It exists in Mexican culture, too. Indigenous Mexicans or African-Mexicans are looked down upon. These kind of Mexicans tend to live in southern Mexico and are often looked down upon by northern Mexicans who are often taller and have more European descent. The south is more linguistically, culturally and ethnically diverse than northern Mexico, and you don't see these in mainstream media where ideal "Mexican" cultural representations are Fromm the north like tequila and mariachi. Why? Because those Mexicans of color are often seen as uneducated and indigenous folks are so stigmatized as well. It's interesting how this is a trend among many countries.

We would go to Chinese restaurants and marketplaces and someone would say something rude about us and you should see their faces go white when my grandfather corrected them in perfect Chinese. As more people travel the world and learn more languages people should check themselves before they make themselves look petty and stupid. I find the irony of Asians wanting to look more like white people but refusing to socialize or marry them. The vast majority of gorgeous looking celebrity's are from mixed parents, there was an again girl in school who had blue eyes because of her mixed background, so beautiful. You aren't born with culture you're taught a culture, you won't loose it if you marry someone who is different from you as long as they're open minded and willing to learn.

One thing that I really find frustrating is that we CENTRAL ASIANS are always ignored when people talk about the Asians. Seriously people talk about how Indians, Pakistanis or other Middle Easterners are part of Asia even though their culture and face look nothing like Asians. We on the other hand have the same look and even some part of our culture is same, so why we are ignored all the time??

***** See, thats what I meant, you mention all parts of Asia except for Central Asia. By the way not all Middle Easterners are Arab, there are also lots of Turks, Jews, Persians, Kurds, Azerbayjanis etc living in Middle East. Thats quite ignorant thing to say actually. I mean its like assuming that all Asians are from China

@piotr9914
@piotr9914 8 лет назад
no, chinese/koreans/japanese/vietnamese/mongols aren't anymore "asian" than other asians geographically so that's obvious. However, the way the term "Asians" has always been referred to cultures that are highly influenced by confucianism. Sino-centrism is another word you can look up. And southeast Asia happens to have a large amount of Chinese people so sometimes they're included. Indians and Pakistani however, it would be more or so correct to call them south Asian or so. So no, they aren't anymore less Asian than the Chinese. We're all Asian if we live or are from Asia but if you ask "why" "asians" seem not to refer to "south Asians", i have just answered it for you.

This brought me memories. A couple months ago I went to Europe for the first time, Italy (I'm from Argentina, southamerica. It caught my attention that Europeans really hate chinese tourists, they told us that they were very disrespectful, and that japanese ppl was more polite. Even in the hotel where all my group stayed (we were all latin ppl, colombian, mexican, brasiian) there was a group of chinese ppl and one day we had breakfast with them, and the hotel separeted some tables for the chinese ppl so we don't mix with them. My friend didn't know that and she sat in a table with chinese ppl and they all start laughing and they left the table. It was funny to me, but they were very rude. Like in latinamerica we are very open to other cultures, like I would have loved to sit with asian ppl to hear how they talk or even talk to them but they were very closed. Anf other thing that happened was in the airplane, I sit with an asian guy, idk where he was from because i can not tell the differences and he started to asking me questions like if I worked, or study, where i was from and everything, which was kind of weird but i was cool talking to him, but then he asked me if he could take a picture of me and i got creeped out, and obviously said no. (sorry if my english is bad, is not my first language)

They were very poor 30 years ago but now they become rich so they got the chances to travel overseas.
@LarryMoore

+Naomi G What seems to you to be rudeness or weird behavior is kind of different interaction patterns within society: Asian people usually tend to start dialogue with questions such as: «What are you doing in your life, are you married, how many children do you have…» just to know your social status and how to treat you: as having inferior (younger sister) or superior social status (elder sister). To laugh at in described case is kind of find an exit from situation have no expectations to one can speak their language or difficult to explain: «Sorry, mate, I can't speak your language, it's very funny you confound it, don't take seriously». Vise versa, I've read an article describing comparing living experience from living in Latin America after East Asia as «They are not as helpful as asian people». Same thing: one takes interactional patterns through one's prism of behavioral expectations. Need to explain to each other first: 1. from which action you knew that your party treated you bad? 2. from which acton you will know that your party treat you good, makes you pleasure, happy? After two parties write down all interactions, that can co-exist and run peacefully. Enjoy!

xinyiquan666 Hong Kong contains a city inside it so it's a bit more than a city. Not all laws are laid out by beijing either. The rights of the people of Hong Kong are protected by basic law and Hong Kong also has a parliament - albiet only half of it is democraticly elected. The other half is hand picked by Beijing. Hong Kong doesn't have an army but they probably can't kill anybody they want to in Hong Kong. People in Hong Kong can still openly remember what happened in Tiananmen square and openly protest. The definition of what a country is can be vague at times but the fact that Hong Kong has it's own parliament, controls it's borders, is not fully controlled by Beijing, writes in it's own language, has it's own olympic team (as well as it's own national football team), and has a growing national identity - it can be considered a country. Please form your own opinions about it. To me it is a country but you should make your own decision about it with the facts laid out.

My best friend is Chinese (born and raised in Canada) and her father (who has been Canadian since a young age) has flat out forbade his children from dating anyone who isn't Chinese. They can't be Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc. He calls that "the wrong kind of Asian." But my Chinese friend is only attracted to white guys so she has only dated white guys and she's sort of engaged to her white boyfriend. Her father will probably disown her if they get married, so they're waiting until she's financially independent. Her sister is dating a guy who is half-Chinese and half-Caribbean. It's not enough that he's half-Chinese - their father despises him. It's so stupid. he doesn't even want his children dating non-Chinese but he raised them with English only and he never even took them to China or any country in Asia, even though he is pretty rich. They got bullied by Chinese peers in school for being "so white."

It looks like Koreans are on the spotlight for being isolative and racist, which I partly agree. I am also a Korean born in America. I lived in America for 8 years, went back to Korea and lived there for 8 years. Then, I came back to America, went to 85% Caucasian college and now I'm living in Boston. As a bicultural person, acculturated to both Korean and American culture, I wanted share my view on Koreans. Whenever I go back to Korea over the break to meet my Korean friends and compare the norms, social trends, etc., to those of Americans, I always find that generally, Korean people are more self conscious about their physical look and what other people think about them. You will notice what I'm talking about if you are Korean. In Korea, the community is extremely tightly bonded, and the media is very effective in coagulating the youthful ideas together, creating a social trend. Plus the geographically small size of the country helps bringing this tighter without much variance and prevents much regional diversity compared to other larger countries. If someone posts crazy ideas or ideologies on a famous website which seem generally compelling and agreed upon by most Koreans, they will spread quickly and sometimes shape everyone's ideas in some ways like crazy. This is also evident in how quickly fashion trends spread. Historical events such as frequent clash between ancient Chinese empires and Korean empires, Japanese invasion of Korea, Korean War, and subsequent hunger phase that motivated Koreans to stand up and bond together to survive which can be seen in Saemaul Movement. These historical events naturally created a tighter social bonding among Koreans to stay back to back to support each other and stand against other larger and stronger countries. This historical ideology lead up to today, and can be subtly seen in social aspects, especially when Koreans immigrate to other countries, as they tend to feel more strongly bonded and comfortable to their own kind, thus hanging out with each other more than other countries do.

Yoon G You are more American than Korean. And Americans are by far the most insular people on this planet. You look at everything through a very American lense. The USA and American culture have way more problems than other developed countries in the world. Americans like you have no right to lecture others. If I compare Western Europeans to Americans, you Americans come across as slovenly in the way your show yourself to others (dress, express, etc) as well as disrespectful and indifferent. Global cultural diversity: The USA is not South Korea, South Korea is not Japan, Japan is not France, France is not Germany and Germany is not the USA. ps: The USA is multiracial, but not multicultural. American culture & thinking reign in the USA.
@yoon8917

***** Thanks for pointing out. I hope that you are stating that while you are understanding Korean culture as much because it doesn't seem like you are understanding American culture as well as Korean culture. You are just stating that I have more of an American lens based on above facts which sounds like you only have very narrow scope of understanding those cultures. I am socially Korean because I can speak better Korean, I interact with Koreans, and practice Korean culture, so don't make that assumption. Also I am not trying to lecture, but I am just giving an opinion. I don't know why you are bringing up such an out-of-context topic. It seems like you are more insular because you are narrow-mindedly making a dangerous assumption and painting every Americans with a stigma which I think is partly true but is mostly not true.

I think this video should be renamed to "Are Chinese Racist Towards Each Other" since it mainly focused on China and hardly on the rest of Asia. From my own experience, yes, I would say Asians are very racist towards each other but most of the racism I encountered from other Asians tend to be from trolls hiding behind computer screens and trying to sound tough on the internet. Racist Asians aren't in your face about it in real life as much as racist non-Asians are. I guess in a way, Asians are more subtle in their form of racism than non-Asians are when they meet you. But if I were to guess why Asians are racist with each other in the first place...I would mainly think a lot of it has to do with economy. Sure, maybe some of it has to do with historical wars but now that that's over and done with, it mainly has to do with economy. Northeast Asia, particularly Japan and South Korea, are extraordinarily wealthy compared to the rest of Asia, and as a result, they look down on the rest of Asia (with the exception of Singapore and Taiwan), especially Southeast Asia (which is extraordinarily poor). It's very similar to how Western Europeans (Germans, British, French, etc...) look down on Eastern Europeans simply because they're poorer even though all Europeans are the same race, which is white. Or how the United States and Canada respect each other and are close allies but neither of them care for Mexico even though they're all North American and they're on the same continent. It's simply an economy thing. You have one side that is fabulously wealthy and one side that is extremely dirt poor so of course the wealthy will always look down on the poorer guys. It's not so much "racism" as it is "classism". To make it worse, many people from poorer countries do anything they can (even illegally immigrate) to the wealthier countries and end up working low-end jobs, which causes the locals in the wealthy countries to look down on them even more. It's very much like the situation between the United States and Mexico, except in Asia, it's Filipinos, Vietnamese, etc..attempting to get into countries like Japan. Anyways, that's just my two cents.

It's not really racism if one person dislikes another person of the same race. If you are a Japanese who dislikes Chinese it's a different issue than Whites or Blacks who dislike all Asians, that's racism. I think what you experience in Asian countries where one group dislikes another is more class-ism.Discrimination or prejudice that is based on social class not race since all Asians are the same race. A White man from New York who dislikes a White man from Alabama is not a racist because they are both white. It's called classism.

Asian from Nepal and I can confirm that we do not hate other Asians probably because of the following : 1. No one ever conquered us. The British tried and they lost. 2. We have a lot of different features in Nepal. We have people who look like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Aryans, there are Indians who migrated from India, a small population of muslims who also migrated and finally the Newar and Rana race who can be born looking like chinese, japanese, korean or a mix of Asian and some other race with prominent features. 3. While the country is not very developed the society's way of thinking and outlook on life develops very fast in Nepal. This may not be the case in the rural areas though.

Shardul Mandloi Have I done my research? I live in Nepal my man, I have first hand experience. Explaining it would take me too long to type, you could research on your own if you like. In short however I can tell you that after the modi government relationships with the Indian government and ours went very bitter which has led Nepal to focus building trade relationships with China so that we don't have to trade with India anymore. 2 trade routes between China and Nepal are now set up and Nepal has begun trading with China. Modi government is not pleased with this either. Go research man you will find tons of stuff, I mean India tried to claim that Buddha was born in India and is an Indian and have also been building a fake Lumbini lol

You kidding me right now? India accounts for more than 60% of Nepal's foreign trade. You can't afford to 'not trade with India anymore'. Talking about the bitter relations with the Indian government, I think you mean the trade route blockades India imposed. That's due to internal unrest in Nepal. A lot of you guys don't see it from our perspective. Truck drivers are afraid to cross the border. Are you aware of the extensive economic linkages and cooperation between the two countries? I guess not, or you would thank us instead of bitching around. And of course we're not pleased that you're setting up trade routes with China. We hate China because of the same reason you hate us.

Levi Little Asian is people in Asia. Not only East Asia. - Many Russians look just like east Asian too. Such as Mongolian Russian ethnic. - some West Chinese nationality could look just like Turk, Arabian etc. - A lot of Myanmar people look just like Indian, Bengali, Nepali. So why Myanmar is Asian and why not Indian? If Indian is not Asian so what about Bangladesh? Nepali? Bhutan? Bhutan is just right next to India and also looked like East Asian too. Even in India, there are lot of people who speak local language that very similar to Thai language. And they don't have straight nose as Indian. If you are not from Asia, you will never know harmony of Asian people. They don't have to look like each others to be Asian. Asian is not race at all. It only refers to people in the Asia continent. Many Asian countries have more than 100 races in each country.
