Bebe's kids show that not everyone in the black community has an equal opportunity for advancement. We see a black couple who presumably has found a path to live decent stable lives. But then there's Bebe and her kids who are of lower status living in squalor. Not everyone who's poor turns bitter and angry. I think Bebe in a sense has given up on a better life and goes downtown to get away from everything. Also, I think the baby with the other two kids being so much older might be considered a 'mistake'. The unchanged diaper a symbol of how ignored and unseen this new addition is. The ending does have a change with someone willing to try and take care of the kids (it's a first step and realistically the best they can do outside of fighting Bebe for custody) besides a woman. Father figures are highly valued in the black community and I think the film ends with a man trying to help. Which is more than these kids have seen in a long time. These are my thoughts, I hope they help with your analysis Megan.

No I think that what this really is it's showing harmful stereotypes making the people who already aren't a fan of black folks especially those who live in the ghetto confirm their beliefs, you should make videos about a family in the ghetto to having a rough time and might be in a crime ridden area but then a guy comes along and he falls in love with the mother and builds a nuclear family and then the hood starts to become a nice place to live for everybody again why can't they make a movie like that? Why can't people make movies where yes you show that there are black people living in squalor or someone poor living in squalor who may be doesn't have a good role model and gets into a lot of trouble or gets involved with the gang but then some good gentleman comes and starts dating their mom and then builds a proper nuclear family and then from there on while there may be problems in the family they have a loving dad who disciplines them and protects them and helps them move away from the hood where things are a lot safer.

yo, honestly I remember watching Bebe's Kids when I was little too. I never paid attention things deeply like the police officer checking Robin when they get to fun world. and things like that. I guess I never thought about it, but I never was in that situation and neither were my parents as far as I know. But the answer is No, those kids aren't necessarily bad, they just need better guardians.

Still think Jamika was kinda being a jerk. Like, seriously, she had Robin plan a fun activity for her son...only to have him take three other kids (ones that are not hers to begin with) without even telling him before hand. And still expects him to care for them. Granted, BeBe could've had a last-minute emergency, but Jamika could've, at least, phoned Robin. And why did she let Robin discipline the kids when she and the kids didn't even know him that well?

I always got the impression that Bebe was dead since she never makes an appearance. The baby says in one of the songs that he isn't a baby, but 3 years old. I never thought the kids were bad, but orphans that had to fight for basic survival. The least Robin could have done for them is call family services.

@spriken

Yep,in fact I just rewatched it... What you don't understand stand is the view point that it's told from and yes it's hammed up a bit .. If he had called someone about the kids it's quite possible worse would happen. Foster care isn't sunshine and roses, it starts with being separated from your siblings. Most places treat you way worse than at home and you no longer have your freedom! Out of the 50 homes I was in,only about 6 didn't make me feel worse about myself. It ranges from flat out abuse to just constantly making you feel like an outsider (like only the "real kids " were allowed upstairs of at the family dinner table ) Most people from rough neighborhoods know all too well what happens if they call on someone and many find it safer for the kids to slowly take over parenting stuff. I imagine if the movie kept going, that's how the story turned out.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 5 лет назад
I really, really hate hearing that and I'm sorry you went through all that madness. T_T I remember in foster care training they warned us that they were going to weed out any people just trying to turn a profit on the kids, but, then after we got approved, it took less than an hour before they wanted us to take in 8 special needs kids (we were approved for 2 MAX). When I told them "no," I couldn't handle that, it was MONTHS before we heard back about another placement, in a county that was desperate for foster homes. The case workers can really get away with playing games with people. And that's a shame, because when the foster care agents start trying to pressure you into stuff you can't realistically do, people get upset and stop being foster parents - then who's left? The people trying to turn a buck on the poor kids... Your story breaks my heart, but I hope you're having a better life now. 💕
@theveganvillainess
@theveganvillainess 5 лет назад
@@TheFangirlWatches wow, that's crazy, 8 special needs kids is way too much for one or two people to handle. That would not have been a good situation at all. It breaks my heart to hear that given that I have a special needs child myself and I know that just one is hard enough.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 5 лет назад
2 of my 3 right now are special needs kids, and I only had 2 kids back when this happened, but, yeah, there's no way that placement should have been offered to us. I struggle with 2 special needs kids right now - I can't even fathom 8 (plus my 2 kids, so 12 people total) in a 3 bedroom, 800 square foot house! But when we put in our homestudy to try to adopt kids, the case worker accidentally cc'ed me into her messages and called my husband and I "inexperienced parents" and all sorts of other negative things so that we never got an adoption placement. They wanted to force us into being permanent foster parents and then refused to update our homestudy when I changed us from foster-adopt to adopt only - then it expired and we never tried again. For as miserable as it was to deal with CPS as an adult, I can't even fathom how horrible it must be for the kids at their mercy... >:(

90s was probably the only time a movie like this would b made. That time was a black entertainment renaissance Martin, living single, different world, Fresh Prince etc… hip hop went mainstream and black was profitable. Look into the history of UPN to CW… build up a network with black comedies then white washed it once it built its audience (profit) Fox did the same thing with popular shows like In living Color. Bebe kids a classic in the hood… character that sound like us and shaped like us sharing the micro aggressions we know all too well.

I understand that you were only 7 years old when it came out. It’s understandable that you miss the joke completely. I’m old and like you said it was aimed at adults. Here’s some context. The character Robin in the movie is a real stand up comedian and telling various stories about Bebes Kids was a huge part of his stand up. The joke is law abiding black people are racially profiled in America because of ignorant black people who break the law. Not only are law abiding black people harassed by greater society but also they are harassed by these ignorant bebes kids. Bebes kids is a metaphor not literal kids. Without ever hearing his standup it’s understandable to miss the joke with the movie since the movie turns bebes kids into actual kids. The movie still shows Bebes kids as maltreated, the mom doing drugs, prostitution and other bad things instead of raising the kids right. The movie tries to keep the metaphor but if you never heard his stand up act, given your age and lack of context I understand why you missed the joke.

No one wants to bring up the truth, if you watch a documentary like Larry elders Uncle Tom 2, it shows how even during segregation and Jim Crow there were a lot of wealthy or at least somewhat well-off black folks even though they had to deal with the diversities and lynching there were a lot of rich black folks in different communities and really if you really look in the history you will find out that even at the beginning of Jim Crow most places like New York City and New Orleans did not comply with the government's segregation laws (just look up the Savoy ballroom up until 1943 black and white people dance there went home with each other there and got married and dated each other even during segregation) so this whole idea that the government had to desegregate things these things were already disagreeing getting early organically, most black and white folks in New Orleans up until sometime in the early 1900s still live together and got along and work together and went to church together even in spite of these segregation laws, and if you go and watch that movie I mentioned aboveit shows that even during segregation black families had a stronger nuclear family structure than even white families and more god-fearing, so even if a black family lived in the ghetto the ghetto was not really that bad of a place back then because most of the people went to church and the neighbors helped each other and there were fathers in the home who would make sure that the crime was not happening and that gangs weren't allowed to thrive, but after Lyndon b Johnson became president in the 60s and passed the Great society bill it really destroyed the black family and made the ghetto run down and dangerous to an extent that it never had been before, I found out that even in the 1920s and 30s while there were black folks that lived in poverty and had crime it was not as bad as it has been for the last 50 or 60 years because the father was still in the home and there's no disputing this even with redlining even with some racist cops even with segregation and black and white water fountains restaurants and buses, the black family still thrived and society even in the older parts of the city were much more safe than they were after the civil Rights movement.

I remember Bebe’s Kids. When I first saw it as a little kid, I thought it was a rip-off of Rugrats. I’m glad someone on RU-vid is talking about it. This movie is underrated as fuck. Bebe's Kids could use either a revival or a sequel, showing the kids as adults and how they turn out. My idea is that Robin and Jamilka finally get married and take Bebe's kids in with them when Bebe finally vanishes of the map, they raise their adopted kids well, with Robin being the one to teach the kids about consequences and how to behave themselves. A Timeskip later shows the kids as adults living their lives, Leon is the most susccesfull out of all the kids, Kallew, Leshawn and Peewee were able to get jobs that pay their bills, but they still suffer from racial profiling and other problems that still haunt Black people today.

I remember it. I've seen it. I was in high school at the time. Honestly, I was never thrilled with it. Something I think you should have mentioned us that the movie was inspired by the stand up comedy of Robin Harris (Robin in the movie, but not voiced by the comedian, as he passed away before production). The kids are intended to be exaggerated versions of black, urban, youth. They live the stereotype that the only income is either from s government check, or less than legal means. And more kids is more G-man money. Personally, I always thought of such stereotypes as something to be fought against, not embraced. The more I see comedians say, "this is what it's like to be back," they more people start to think, "that's how it is, the only way it is, and the only way it can be." I much prefer judging by the content of a person's character, and not assume the a skin color, or neighborhood, or economic situation determines who you are or how you behave. But Bèbè's kids have no dad, and a neglectful mom! How can you expect them to upright citizens in a home like that? Really, I don't. The kids need a positive role model. Could Robin have been one? Yes. Was he? No. Why? Because the writers thought that was funnier if he wasn't. What I don't like is when people say that all these things are because they are black, and the movie offers no counter to such a claim. Are the kids bad? Yes! Could they be brought around? If they were put in a stable two parent home with a proper balance of love and discipline, maybe with enough time. But the writers didn't think that would be funny, or fit in the run time. Last thing. As you pointed out, this is an adult movie. Yet, at the time, it wasn't marketed as such. Unfortunately, a lot of families regarded the PG-13 rating as safe for families. (A lot of parents made the same mistake with Cool World.). As I recall it even advertised on shows that kids would watch. Now, don't get me wrong. If a parent feels their child is mature enough to handle a movie, that is their choice, and I won't argue it. But too many parents just saw, "cartoon", and blindly sent their kids off to watch something they didn't fully understand the content of. If a movie isn't for kids, it shouldn't be marketed as such.
@TheFangirlWatches
@TheFangirlWatches 5 лет назад
That's true I didn't mention it was all based on Robin Harris's comedy act, but I usually end up assuming that people who watch the video have seen the movie (which starts out with Harris telling those jokes). And, sure, comedy movie has to comedy and all, but since they fleshed out a 10 minute routine into an entire movie it would have been nice to get a little more in-depth with the kids lifestyle/future. And your complaint about it being marketed to kids is the same one I have for Watership Down and the Plague Dogs. You can't just throw animated animals or kids on commercials and expect people to assume it's for adults.

When I discovered this movie, The Proud Family was big, and my child suburb mind thought the responsible woman was like a relative to Mrs. Proud. And this movie was like her crazy shenanigans with boys and her kid, plus these kids she was babysitting and using as a “Donald Duck Temper control test” on her latest boyfriend. Now i know all his “bad luck” was racial profiling , and Bebe is living in a all but named drug house, and probably got arrested “ going down town” equates to “going upriver” . For it’s time, and still the movie does a great job of making the audience feel sorry for and see the kids especially as total brats. Its not black and white and you get to decide if the circumstances the kids live in justified them being tough brats, if being nice to kids just to impress a woman is ok. Most shows/movies then (and today) had bullies or jerks on some level, but never really got into WHY they were that way. Its more common to show why today, so for a National Lampoon First Date scenario , i gove this move props, cringe and all.

Yeah I think this is at least part of why the story doesn't feel super current even for the early 90s. Which isn't to say it was preposterously old fashioned, but if we chalk this up to being "of its time," clearly it's of the mid-80's time of the stand-up routine, not the cartoon.

The opening credits show Robin Harris telling his Bebe's Kids jokes, and I usually assume people who watch have seen the movie, so I thought that was implied - but for anyone not clear - it is based on like 10 minutes of stand up. Although, since they fleshed out that routine into a full script, I think my arguments still stand that the writers could have dealt with some things a little more thoroughly.

@TheMightyN

Why does this feel like a smear campaign against the main adult characters, specifically, Robin? The original intent was to explain why Bebe's Kids were "bad"--and you have--except all the blame seems to revere towards Robin, who's been forcibly inflicted into this situation by the passively sweet Jamika. Children develop into unstable citizens when their nurtured in a hostile environment. Vandalism, Domestic Violence, Abandonment, and Attention-seeking is all Kahil, LaShawn, and Pee-Wee the O.G., knew. So, it is any wonder why Robin showed hostility towards these kids especially after they demolished an entire Amusement Park and caused a power outage in Las Vegas? But to give credit where it's due, at least Robin tried to save the kids from their predicament after coming to the realization that he's wrong and selfish. So, in a "F" for Family perspective these sorts of scenarios do hold some lessons.

I was already in my early teens when the movie came out and had seen comedian Robin Harris’s standup comedy act in which the characters were talked about so I loved it. While it’s funny the premise is pretty sad. Growing up in a rough area I had friends who had absentee parents and nothing in the fridge. I’ve seen plenty of profiling as well so unfortunately it IS accurate in the country we live in. As an adult the ending hits me more in the feels than it did as a teen because there are plenty of kids living in such situations

See, my heart wants Bebe to be the up-and-coming hero who is all messed up right now, but she's going to be a better mom and get her act together after people speak up. Maybe I'm too hopeful, but, I would have liked to have seen Bebe take some accountability for her kids by the end of the movie. They deserve better. 😡

I wasn't allowed to watch it until several years later... and even then only because my parents weren't home and it was on HBO! Oh the things a 90s kid could watch on HBO... LMAO The kids aren't good or bad, they are neglected. They act out because they are frustrated. The more aggressive aspects of their behavior are likely survival techniques from living where they are. "Going Downtown"... oh all the euphemisms for that one! The first thing that came to mind was being arrested, since in many smaller towns the police department was downtown. In poorer places, I've heard of "going downtown" as a euphemism for getting drugs, or even prostitution. I read a number of years ago that the original script for the film was much deeper and far more adult, but the studio refused to make it as it was. So instead of a drama with comedic moments making a statement, we got a comedy with some illusions to hardships.

Oh yeah, if you go into a place and watch your kids run off, you are giving them free range to do whatever. I've had it happen even clothes shopping that some random kid is following behind my putting their hands in my back pockets. Or, you'll see kids in Walmart throwing footballs across the isles like maniacs. But if they're all alone and you get on them for acting badly, suddenly 40 relatives pop out of the woodwork to yell at you.

I miss blade cb4 Friday movies baby boy hunters point boys in the hood so many now you see little to non just reworked old content.

I remembered baby pee wee talking, and of course I remember that I thought he was a little like baby Herman from who framed Rodger rabbit. And it's funny now that I think of it I think they call them baby peewee, because before there was baby Herman from Rodger rabbit. And when they developed this baby character that could talk just like baby Herman oh, they took the name peewee, so it would be the opposite from baby Herman and that two baby characters that people would think like. Oh yeah I understand why these baby characters have the opposite names, it's because of the fictional character himself Pee-wee Herman. I'm thinking Pee-wee Herman himself had his two names on to animated baby characters, one from who framed Rodger rabbit and another from Bebe's Kids

The Fangirl as an adult I’d probably be in tears now after watching your review of this film. I probably would’ve be upset as a kid too, that ending was awful. I would’ve stayed, or took the kids with me (if I could drive, I’m visually impaired so no driving for Tawnie. Lol) bought them a large pizza and drinks, take them back home and wanted with them till their mom got back. Changed the baby’s diaper for goodness sake. Also would’ve called the cops to help the kids get somewhere else to stay until their mom could get some parenting classes or something. I commend you for Fostering. My hometown needs more foster parents. I was in care from the age of 14 and aged out of the system.

The message was pretty clear at the end they lack parental supervision and discipline. Their mother is constantly absent and they don't have a father in their lives. Depending on the charity of their mother's friend. When see not around they have to raise themselves. The black community is suffering from single mother house hold an absentee fathers. It's a product of government Incentives. Broken homes for the welfare state for welfare checks. Women married the state and discarded the men. Literally labeling these potential husbands as sperm donors. It a complete and total mess.

My point of view on the few times that I’ve seen it, is that sadly this film largely comments on the subject of race in this country and how we treat it. And that ending is a very realistic and sad depiction of how real-life is for some kids. Personally with the way that Bebe in the film neglects her kids, I wouldn’t be surprised if they got taken away from her.
