Bulgarians became my immediate favourite as soon as they came out. I see this change as an absolute win. I still have my awesomely awesome Konnik in the late game, but I get a strong alternative for the castle age in the shape of the best knights in the game (as long as you deny a couple of relics if you're against a Lit player). You can use cavaliers in the late game if you want to take down town centers faster than with konniks. They're also great at raiding (not to mention that you already have the best thrash raider in the game... almost). And by far their strongest bonus: their starting song. Such a huge boost to morale thanks to their awesome track. If it could be extended for 2 hours I'd be winning every single match.

That's true, but can this civ beat Franks on daily basis? The Bulgarian cavalry must be on par with the Frank, because face it. Bulgaria beat the Franks three times! Three f***ing times! Once Omurtagus, once Kaloyan and once Ivan Assen II. They never defeated us! Never! Give us an early game bonus and make us beat them on daily basis!!!
@matthiuskoenig3378
@matthiuskoenig3378 4 года назад
@@spd-kv6sd omurtagus beat the franks with a river fleet, not with cavalry. Kaloyan won in a marsh, and lost a number of sieges, and never won a battle without cuman allies. (he did infact loose a number of sieges) Ivan Assen had Nicean allies, and when he lost them he sided with the Latins (franks), so i wouldn't say he beat the franks. infact both Kaloyan and Ivan gave large numbers of frankish knights passage through their lands when asked despite haveing an anotgonistic relationship with the Latin empire. implying they feared frankish knights.

That's true, but Bulgarians also need an early game bonus. That's what makes them weak. If they're going to be a bit weaker in the final ages, they have to be stronger earlier. Still waiting on the Tatars civ overview brother! I like this change though, those resources saved from not having to get paladin is a big deal. Plus with that stone saved on TCs putting up a castle is a little faster, so it's not unreasonable to go for that tech pretty early on in castle age.
@michaeltaylor8698
@michaeltaylor8698 4 года назад
Honestly I just like the fact that there's one less Paladin civ. I like using Paladins but I feel like they take the spotlight away from most other cavalry units. I've seen people in the steam forums arguing that a civ cannot be considered a good cavalry civ if its missing the Paladin which I think is pretty lame and undersells how much variety there actually is in the game both on terms of cavalry unique units and/or cavalry related civ bonuses. Personally I wish Cumans would also lose the Paladin and then maybe get a new civ bonus or change the Cuman Mercenaries tech to something else to compensate for their late game.
@mrbatukhan6791
@mrbatukhan6791 4 года назад
you're absolutely spot on. A good cavalry civ should be one where their bonuses affect their Calvary & they need not rely on just one Major Paladin. In fact, what happens when golds run scarce? A good Calvary Civ should be one where their other "Calvary" can do without Gold-heavy calvary and still be using calvary bonuses to win other enemies. In such a case, that civs can be quite over-powered but they can definetly do with some nerfs to other parts like maybe siege/infantry/defenses to make it more balance or make it more reliant on allies other bonuses.

So basically, this change makes it so that you can use knights in late castle, when Konnik aren't as easy to mass and still lacking upgrades, due to the lack of castles, but once you reach the imperial age, the cavaliers can serve as a powerful transitional unit for a while, giving you time to transition into the now Elite Konnik, as you should hopefully have a couple of castles to make building them in high numbers more feasible, which is also reinforced by their lowerd build time.

Fortunately for Bulgarians, massing their unique unit is easier than for any other civ because of the krepost. However, they can only produce the unit. Upgrade to elite and the important unique tech stirrups must be researched at a castle. Seems like the meta would be open Castle Age with knights and build a castle before a krepost in order to research stirrups. Then one can continue with knights into cavalier or make use of many kreposts to spam konniks while using the castle principally for tech upgrades
@spd-kv6sd
@spd-kv6sd 4 года назад
The problem is Bulgarians still have a relatively weak early game. Something must boost the man-at-arms rush in Feudal so that they can walk smoother through the ages. Free upgrades don't really help and FF into archers still can bust any infantry rush.

I would have liked to see when the paladin upgrade overtakes the Bulgarian cavaliers with stirrups (assuming they pay for that anyways for their other cavalry) resource-wise. If you need to field 50+ cavaliers over time in late imp normally to make the upgrade worth it, how well perform 50 Bulgarian cavaliers vs the 40 paladins you normally get for the same cost? At what numbers do the paladins overtake the +10 more Bulgarian cavaliers?
@firockfinion3326

Question: What about the comparison of Bulgarian cavaliers versus paladins when accounting for the total army cost including upgrades? Where would the extra few cavaliers Bulgarians might have for NOT buying the paladin upgrade let them come out on top against an army of fully upgraded paladins using the same total amount of resources? (Resources spent on the units AND resources spent on the upgrades, I mean.)
@devonbueno8344
@devonbueno8344 4 года назад
The total resource difference between Stirrups and Paladin is 10 more Cavalier, which defeats most same-resource Paladin setups from any civ. In this way, Stirrups Cavalier sounds better than Konnik in straight cavalry battles. The same resource savings between Stirrups and Paladin could also go into fully upgrading mounted and dismounted Konniks to make Konniks the more flexible unit vs. anti-cavalry while still evenly trading against generic Paladins in equal numbers. The new Stirrups make Knights vs. Konniks an either-or choice.

Spirit, you might say the 33% speed attack is like a +2 atk to the cavalier in the long run exchange (because of the zero effect in the 1st hit so the value converges at infinite hits' fight). You might do some comments in this exchanges comparing the DPS (with numbers) and the sustain in hits (like you do with arrows or high bonus damage units like spears vs cavalry). I think the audience with see better the difference of a direct exchange and a side bonus like this 12*1,333=16 damage of the cavalier. Just one exemple: the calalier will kill faster some enemies like swordsman or archers and this faster killing spree might endup as the Bulgarian cavalier beeing better agaist those than the paladins (it's a conjecture, shuold be proven true or false). Cheers. Nice video. Love the analitcs, better of all.

better dps doesn't mean its faster to kill. say a target unit has 50 hp and we have two attackers. one has 30 dps and attacks twice per second. the other has 10 dps but attacks once every 5 seconds. the lower dps unit kills the target faster. because it kills it right away in one hit (50 damage per hit every 5 seconds = 10dps) while the other takes the whole 2 seconds to kill it. just an extreme example so it's easier to visualize. my point is sometimes that 2 extra damage (which is relatively a lot more important after accounting for target armor, i might add) may result in less hits to kill. in low hp units that might be the difference between killing in 3 or 4 hits. and there goes all the speed advantage.
@30Salmao
@30Salmao 4 года назад
@@GraveUypo Of course I didn't mean to ignore armour or even neglect the situations where you kill with less hits. If we would do the whole formula will might have some cases coming in both ways. I just was remembering that the bonuses don't work in a straight way (your comment make this point in some, we have lots of things to consider). I always run Excel and tests over this type of things and I did in other RTSs as well like AoE3 or AoM. All games have particularities that need to be adressed to the simulation be real to the results in the game itself.
@30Salmao
@30Salmao 4 года назад
@@GraveUypo I would like to pick our exemple here once more. So our cavalier hits the 5th strike when the paladin hits the 4th. Because the 1st strike as no cooldown and by 3 paladin's hits the cavalier with 33% more attack speed has a "extra attack" so: 1+3 paladin = 1+4 cavalier. Nice, so the "extra attack" is not added straight ahead, you need to subtract the armor. Let's say we have one armor, so at the 4thpaladin hit the cavalier is hitting 11 more damage. What we are really gaining in this situation is that the cavalier is killing faster and going to the next target. You can put like 10 cavalier to kill 15 archers and 10 paladin to kill the same 15 archers and we could see the final result as "how much HP calaliers have left vs how much HP paladins have left", and we would be counting both the extra HP of the paladins and the faster killing of the cavaliers (which let the archers shoot less times). But as the cavalier is strong enought to survive agaist archers (what doesn't happen with the paladins) this extra damage will not drop off during the battle (or, in other way, will drop less because few cavaliers will die to arrows). Btw the whole point is just to test some "non frontal confrontation". Maybe just agaista random unit, or a unit that is countered by and one unit that counters the unit analysed in the video (this time the knight line). We can see the units in a much broader way than just puting them too smash their "equals".

It streamlines the Bulgarian gameplan in Castle and Imperial a lot. Open with Knights, get Stirrups which wasn't that justified before if fielding Knights, enjoy the late Castle to early Imperial powerspike, switch to Konniks and still keep the remaining boosted Cavaliers. Earlier it would be, should I get Stirrups although I'm fielding Knights? Should I upgrade to the generic FU Paladin or switch to (Elite) Konniks? If I switch to Konniks, what about these generic Cavaliers that I got remaining?
@spd-kv6sd
@spd-kv6sd 4 года назад
Still could have had that with Paladin available and perhaps some paladins would still be able to defeat the Bulgarian. The problem is that there is a peak of a powerspike and instead of making the civ consistent, the change made it even more situational. The late game seems weaker and that must be offset by a bonus that helps m@a rush.

Yo Spirit, i have few questions and one challenge for you. 1. I notice that Gaia in creation maps give monks +15 more health and +3 more range also archers and cav. archers buildings and all that get +1 more dmg when u make them post-imperial in the player section, i don't have DE so i don't know if that was fixed. 2. Could you check for me a units like, Amazon archer, Amazon warrior, Nordic warrior, Something warrior, Bronze swordsman, Legionary and Centurion, where i know Centurion have +10 bonus dmg vs infantry but i just wonder does any of these unitse get other bonuses and also i know they benefit from civ. bonuses Challenge: Could you play any civilization vs any civilization with difficuly starting lowest then go higher as you win but, Rules: you can't mine trade self or get gold from anything litterally from anything you can use only gold that you start with but, you start on highest ressources. You can't play the mode where you get 10k all ressources or something like that Thank you ^^

@Lenrigas
@Lenrigas 4 года назад
I really think that the importance of this change is much more significant in 1v1 rather than in team games, where it is much easier to get into paladins and heavy gold units and upgrades. In 1v1 you get worse version of paladin for fraction of the price, making even more cavaliers with the resources saved. In teamgames lategame you can always go konniks, which is arguably a better unit in lategame anyway

As a Persian player, I’d say this might help my crossbow kill Bulgarian cavalier a bit easier because of their lower pierce armour in imperial age, but late castle age my generic knight will lose on Bulgarian knight given equal upgrades if Bulgarian picks up stirrups. I guess this tech might get some tweaks later on depending on how it works in matches even though it is not too overwhelming during the test.

Bulgarians Cavalier are definitely very powerful and most times it is too expensive to tech into Paladins in high level 1v1s which makes them so appealing. You also get an excuse to transition into Light Cav/Hussar that now also attack 33% faster. I think this was a great change and a nice video showing the head-head matchups :)

I think this change is a tactical nerf, but a strategic buff. What I mean by that, is that you can focus on a knight rush with stirrups in castle age, but then gradually phase out your army in favour of konniks when it comes to imperial age, all while your knights/cavaliers are still keeping up the pressure on your enemy. So even if they are weaker in the long run to paladins, that matters less as the endgame plan will be to replace them with elite konniks anyways, and they can still serve their purpose well up to that point.
@balintmecs6567
@balintmecs6567 4 года назад
I think the faster attack speed is somehow similar to the villager's gathering speed bonuses. The latter does not mean that the real resource income is higher in direct proportion, simple because the whole gathering process is composed of several elements. For a military unit the dealt damage is quite the same, especially for a meele unit who in a battle spent some time without attackin or on cooldown. And in a larger scale battle this time's proportion is bigger than in a smaller (especially in a 1v1 meele fight), at least I think it so. Therefore the attack rate bonus is relatively smaller in the former case. So maybe in a 5v5 battle the bulgarian cav would be defeated against its counterparts - I don't know, but you checked only the 1v1s (except against the Malians). On the other hand, the overkill is obviously smaller in the bulgarian cav's case compared to a generic paladin's.

I think their strenth really depends on what you want them to do. For example, vs Vills, both chev and pal need 3 hits (assuming full upgrades), so the bulgarians kill those fast and should perform a bit better on raiding. However, paladins save 1 hit on Halbs and only need 4 instead of 5, so there the Bulgarian Chevalier get the kill as fast as a generic paladin. The same happens with Arbalester, which survive the 3rd Chevalierhit with just 1 HP, making the Bulgarians even worse vs range units.

I thought you talked about this before but, technically don't Vikings have the 'best' Castle Age econ boost through getting free handcart and such? Like, they can immediately start pumping out knights more often with less econ impact or funneling to a player to make more knights even faster.
