Just a brief video on Cherry MX keyswitches, and the alternatives. It's fairly basic, and you can go much deeper, especially once you start getting involved in custom mechanical keyboards.

Just a simple vid on MX type keyswitches. Yep I know, you can go way deeper, and you guys aren't really the ones that need to be shown the light, but I think you know what I was going for here. But it looks like we're generating some awesome discussion!

Thank you for taking my "yuck" comment out of context at 0:26 by omitting the second part of the comment that says "I wish these "budget boards" would just let you swap the switches out with gateron switches at least if they're gonna keep costs down. :/" I never said anything about Cherry MX switches being the defacto switch; just that more budget boards should go for kailh/gaterons instead of _defaulting_ to Outemu because it's cheaper (outemu blues and skies ice v2 are the only outemus that are "worth it" if you're forced to go with outemu). I know just as well as you do that more exotic switches should be up for display in retail stores so they can actually try outemus/gaterons/zealios/holy pandas/Aristotles/alps/etc in person instead of just trusting the word of "redditors" who may see the switch as good for them but doesn't fit their personal preference. The keyboard world should not just be dominated by two manufacturers in retail stores. How you get the normies in the community is that you show off all the switches you can to them *in person* plain and simple, because we need this clicky clacky world to be a happier one and it doesn't start with taking people's comments out of context. :)

I've been using linear Cherry MX Blacks with my daily driver keyboard for about a year now. I find that from my own subjective point of view, when combined with their higher weighting and tall double shot spherical keycaps, they have a rather smooth sandy feel that enhances their tactility, rather than the "scratchiness" that others tend to describe of them.

To be fair, even Alps switches were originally made to be linear, and they just thought of adding the tactile or clicky leaf later. Doing so made clicky and tactile Alps unable to take backlight LEDs.
@Boyetto-san
@Boyetto-san 5 лет назад
@@michael4196 Blacks are the original MX switch type, which is why you'll hear a lot of talk in some communities about vintage Blacks. Cherry later designed a notch in the slider to generate a tactile bump, and thats how we got Browns and Clears. In the case of Blues, they were originally designed not with clickiness in mind at all. The click jacket/sleeve that generates the sound was originally invented to produce hysteresis (having the reset point above the actuation point), which was a quality considered desirable for typists. That they generated a clicky sound was entirely incidental, and they just rolled with it.

The irony is that if you look at vintage stuff Cherry MX was...pretty mediocre compared to its contemporaries. But then rubber domes started to take over and most keyboard manufacturers started to focus on low cost more than anything. Therefore most switch manufacturers just abandoned the market entirely. They didn't see much room for profit. Cherry was about the only mechanical keyswitch maker to keep at it and they deserve some credit for that. Then when there was a big revival in interest in mechanical keyboards (larger due to the gaming market) Cherry became the de facto choice because they were the only people still making mechanical key switches in large quantities. Honestly I've never liked Cherry switches. I mostly stuck to vintage boards until Kailh started doing some interesting stuff int he MX-compatible world. There are some other decent switches as well, like Zeal's stuff. But personally I actively avoid 'genuine Cherry' switches.

Why so many people here find Cherry MX Blue switches so bad? They have right and desirable design characteristics. They actuate exaclty at the click point. This simply means click equals keystroke. The Outemu Blue ones actuate after the click point, while the Kailh Box ones a little before the click (haven't tested them, but sounds rather bad). Also, Cherry Blue have the "hysterisis" feature, ie the release point is above the actuation point, a feature loved by typists (and rather hated by gamers). The other brands lack this feature, and the release point is at the same height as the actuation point. Of course, Cherry should improve the quality of their products and refresh and modernize their lineup.

I think something similar to this happens a lot in the tech world. When it comes to audio, people seem to like beats, bose, skullcandy etc. But these brands are no different from Corsair, Razer or other gaming brands in the keyboard world. There are much better stuff for the price like stuff from Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, Monoprice etc. Cherry does make some pretty good switches. Their linears aren't all that bad although I think Gateron and Kailh pretty much caught up. MX Clears are actually a very unique switch and they are also pretty tactile. Retooled MX Blues are actually very tactile. Much more tactile than their older MX Blue variants. However most of their switches always have a better, and possibly cheaper alternative. Blues, albeit being pretty tactile, rattle like hell. Kailh clickbar switches beat them out. Stock MX Blacks are just too heavy for their own good and mx reds too light. They are also scratchy stock. Gateron linears and kailh cream switches are smoother. MX Clears are great switches but Zealios exist and I would say MOD switches are also better than MX Clears. Their browns are just sad imo. There is pretty much no reason for anyone to get Cherry MX Browns over Gateron Brown or Kailh BOX Brown unless they are using vintage browns. It's all a matter of perspective, as most people will consider cherry switches to be an upgrade from their non mechanical keyboards but considering how better value switches already exist, Cherry MX will probably slowly fade away from the competition as time goes by. Just like how people seem to think Beats are amazing headphones because of course, they will sound better than the $5 earbuds they generally tend to use. But for the price, there will be better options than the most popular stuff. In the end, it is a win for the consumers as they will get better, and cheaper products due to the competition. I am hoping Cherry actually innovates something big and bring something incredible to the table, just like what Input club is doing with their Silo switches. The low profile switches are pretty unique, but they aren't remarkable and I would consider them to be already outclassed by the kailh low profile switches. At some point, more and more switches from Kailh and Gateron will catch up to the general public and will be the norm. On the other hand, there are even more premium switches like Alps and Buckling spring which are even better than the best MX based switches. However I wouldn't really blame people for not knowing much about these older switches. At this point comparing Cherry & its clones to Alps/IBM switches is the equivalent of comparing something like $200 audiophile headphones vs $2000 audiophile headphones.

Just wondering if the Cherry MX factor of the Ducky keyboards big enough of a turn off to stay away from it? Currently torn between the Ducky and GMMK barebones (plan to use gat yellows). The price of a custom GMMK is much more than a similar size Ducky, but better typing experience with the switches. But I've heard Ducky have some really good stabs, and wonder if the GMMK can even compare.

i had a weird journey with mech keyboards since i always went for cheaper ones but i have finaly found my match on a budget 60 percent board. I started with a razer blackwidow tournament edition, i dont know what kinds of switches they were but they were clicky and felt great. next up was a logitech g413 carbon with romer G. they were linear and never felt as good as the razer board. and then i poured water on it by accident. i needed a new keyboard and went to the store where they had a hyper X alloy FPS for sale with kailh silver Speed which i hated.... i had so many double button presses and i felt really unaccurate with it for some reason so i went on the search for a new one. i wanted tactile or clicky on either a 60 percent or 65 percent board. i was thinking of the ducky with mx browns but i heard that the mx Browns werent as good so i went for a glorious PC gaming race modular keyboard with gateron browns and they are absolutely lovely and the build quality is great.

Cherry still have the best manufacturing tolerances, consistency and quality control - where they fall down is options and range. Each switch is basically the "generic" in each switch type. They definitely deserve criticism for failing to innovate on design or offer as diverse a range as competitors but if I had to have just one keyboard, I would go for a cherry switch 100% of the time.
