The “International Mathematical Olympiad” is a competition where over a hundred different countries compete to be the best. Except on one occasion, China’s been ranked in the top 3 for the past 30 years. But are they really good at math? We hit the streets of Beijing to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Chinese population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss videographer, Yang.

I think different things are taught as basic math facts in different places. In elementary school in Texas, we memorized addition and multiplication tables for every pair of numbers up to 12, and I still have those memorized, but only random stuff past that. Also, the powers of 2 are basic for me because of computer science, which is why it shocked me how long it took the Indian's and Chinese to figure out the square root of 256, even though they did most of the questions faster than I could (particularly the Indians, who seem to be better than the Chinese).

The difference is, when the questionnaire was asked in India it was in front of a University, school area. When the Chinese was asked, they were random working people. You might be surprised to know that it's the same in the US. Middle school students get the basics of advanced math. However, the focus is more on understanding the concepts than memorization. @@raggmopp857 It's taught the same way here in the UK. Just memorising the correct answers would be considered a fail here in Cambridge when we were kids, etc. It's so frustrating, because i am good at memorising stuff, but not explaining how i got to the answer step by step because i've always lacked patience, so i was put in math classes for people with learning difficulties, even though i aced every test,because i couldn't explain it, they always accused me of cheating. Now i know eight languages thanks to my memory, but how i was treated in and regarding math really put a sour taste in my mouth re the subject, which sucks.

@Bvic3
@Bvic3 2 года назад
Yes. If this is the level of math that an adult youtuber considers as representative for math, it gives a really poor impression of the all mighty asian math. That being said, simply asking people to do math on the spot in the street is stupid. If you answer on the spot, it means there is no thinking, just rote reflexes. About the math olympiads, it's mostly due to the decadent culture of the West where excellence is considered fascist and no child of the elite is told to care about math competitions but instead learn to make a child startup or build a robot. (that being said, average people are stupid, anywhere you go in the world)

I'm an Indian (but apparently this is true for Chinese people as well) and the education system forces you to memorize multiplication tables and stuff a lot. Other than that, in school we are made to practice mental math a lot. So, even if we forget the tables, we can quickly multiply in our head. In India, calculators aren't allowed in school. Even in most colleges it's not. In my college though, which is a research institute, it is allowed. But honestly...... INDIANS and CHINESE have so much in common!!!!!! 😱😱😱😱

@@NarutoUzumaki-xd4db what the hell do you mean by 'only' 40 percent indians? Isn't it a large number and it is way too bigger then the number of people who speak English, isn't it? Look there are two main languages which are spoken the most in india, Hindi and English. So I think in this choice Hindi should be chosen because it is a language of Indian origin. In this video Chinese are telling even answers in their mother tongue in maths. Ask any kid 6 + 6 he will tell you twelve not bara or bar or whatever his mother tongue is. So that is because of the great English education system which is currently happening just to maintain class. So that should be stopped.

Especially in the mtero cities like Mumbai and Delhi. People there are blind literally ( I mean to say most people not everyone) they just run towards english medium because of idk their class and employment or blah blah blah reason. Ask any kid छत‌्‌तीस or बीस and most likely like really 90 percent kids will say "Mom chhatis kya hota hai?". I used to be great at math when I was a student and I think math made it easier for me to learn and understand other subjects such as grammar and stuff. There was even a teacher at the school that would teach some grammar rules with basic math and it was way easier to understand for me and I know it untill this day because of it. If you open your mind to understand math you start having a more logical thinking about things. And by the way. if you did the same test with college students in other countries I am pretty sure they couldn't answer half of the questions that easily.
