I shoud note though that Asian people are generally liked or atleast seen in a neutral light by most people. Edit: non chinese asians have somewhat neutral standing.
I feel asians are the least hated ethnic people in the world. Like even though they'll get a racist comment about their eyes or something from an ignorant racist person but they arent the main talk of disliked ethnic groups like how muslims and black people are.
@ahmad mushaffa I honestly dont know how an asian could be Muslim. Did you convert to Islam? Also I'm not sure because right now how Jews were thought of back in the 1920s and 30s is kind of the same way how muslims are being seen today. Some people just dont like them some people dont even want them in their country.
In general Estonians don't hate people based on race, but will hate people who are foreign troublemakers. It can be said that we are not racict, we hate all jackasses equally. Most people are cautious of middle-eastern looking guys though. It makes sense.
+salsaestonia As a middle eastern( Persian speaking from Iran) I visited multiple times Estonia , Tallin, Tartu and Polva (if I am not wrong with the name), and I never faced racism, not even cold reception. may be I was a lucky one. But In general I agree with you. All this radical Islamism has made this part of the world look ugly.
I guess many don't want them here (as refugees), maybe even the majority, but guess there's still a bunch of people for it. If they come here to live and work or just as a tourist, we don't care as long as they're a good working citizen. We'll treat them well.
I'm Asian American and I had a pleasant time with Estonians when I visited Tallinn a little over 2 years ago. I find them approachable particularly the younger generation, I feel they are affable and I really enjoyed having a conversation with them. As a keen traveler Tallinn is one of the most memorable places I've visited and I look forward on visiting Tallinn again this coming December.
Perhaps the caveat is that there are no negative stereotypes about Chinese, or East Asians in general. If any then that they're hard-working, unassuming, and know kung-fu. Add a compatible religion and shared experience with Communism, and there's a lot of common ground. I see what you mean about the pressure. Which absolutely goes the other way, too, for Estonians in foreign countries, as well as Estonians here, interacting with foreigners. People are very proud of this country. Even if they may be racist, then the impression that they give about themselves and their country may overrule it, and keep overt racism at bay. PS: keep making Tujurikkuja reaction videos!
Estonians can be nice to foreign guests (such as tourists and students), BUT they had better learn the tragic situation of Western Europe and Scandinavia with regards to migrants. There is obviously no turning back when you step into that abyss.
+Pynchon Woo. Estonians being racist are depends on very different factors. Myself, I consider only partially racist (but my father instead is very racist). I have nothing against other races but that depends. If a foreigner who wants to live in Estonia, but do not adapt into local enviroment (like half of the russians in estonia), then I would become little racist. You (wanna) live here but you refuse to adapt? That is not cool. And many estonians are insecure about immigrants from middle east. Insecure because we are Christians and immigrants from middle east are muslims. They don't adapt into local eniroment. They wanna establish their own demands: "Give us support money, adapt muslim laws but we don't follow your law."

I think he meant culturally christian. Sure, most of us don't believe in a god, but christianity has played a huge roll shaping our cultural traditions. For example our protestant work ethic, morals, what's important to us etc.
I can see that you are right, IF we consider your ethical roots, which seems to be from far east. As a middle eastern, I (among with many other darker skinned friends of mine from those regions) have experienced many incidents of racism, though not physical or dangerous in any kind (just in social interactions and the way they might behave with you). Unfortunately this is increasing recently, thanks to the popularity of the conservative party and also the terrorism-related focus of the media on the middle east. All that said, I can't deny many good incidents of very nice people too, that I'm grateful for. Just wanted to mention that it's not that simple that you say; depending on where you come from and how you look like, your experiences might be different.

I agree with many commentators below saying the vast majority of Estonians aren't inasmuch racists as they are xenophobic, not being used to people of different racial origin. There should be a separate word for it. But when it comes to people of Asian descent, be they Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese etc, in my experience there is rather positive attitude towards them in Estonia. Even among the older generations there is this perception of Asians as diligent, dedicated, hard-working people. Most Estonians are willing to identify with that.

Estonians are very racist towards anyone who looks like they might be from african or middle eastern decent. My family and family friends are all racist, not the violent or loud kind but the behind the back judgy kind. Haven't seen or heard any racism toward asians so that's good atleast.

MultiSciGeek Estonians, are not ignorant racists, we are racist because we have very few non white people here so we're not used to them. We have less than 1.5 million ethnic estonians left in the world so we're not very welcoming of other cultures in general, we might not like them, but we won't burn crosses on their lawns, we'll just give them weird looks. A good % of us are racist but not as racist as most racists in the world, hope you understand what i mean by that. I'm pernonally not racist though.

Racism is a code word for anti-white. Nothing wrong when keeping your heritage, all populations in the world have the right to keep their heritage and countries. Estonia belongs to Estonians and there is nothing wrong with that.
Some Estonians can be racist, more from older generations but younger people are generally not racist and Are more "woke" about the other world problems too
i think there are some people who are a little bit ignorant and cant really blame them its cus they havent had any interactions with foreigners so they feel that its odd or different.. and may come across as racist but its actually ingnorance.. or they just havent been exposed to difference
So let me tell you guys something about Estonians, look we have gone through rough times like the holocaust, Siberian plague, losing almost half of our inhabitants of Estonian like 20000 people. Our great grand parents where taken to Siberia to die, some of them where buried alive or smoked to death in a prison train, if they managed to live but barely moved, they where starving to death. And btw war's scare me, cause who knows when where gonna get attacked again 😢😖
My only experience of Estonians was working with a very anti social guy in Kazakhstan. He was rude to me ( British) and the Russian and Kazakh colleagues. I have an opportunity over the next 6 days to find out what the majority of Estonians are like as I am going to visit there. I speak Russian and have very close relationship with Russian people. So I want to know if they really do not like Russian people. People are People. I think I will be surprised and happy to find out that the people like everyone. I feel sorry for us all around this world because our "so called" Leaders like to divide us. We are are all earthlings people! We are all the same. Slaves to our rich greedy bomb making masters. When we all wake up to this is the day that we become free! I hope to find that Estonians are nicer than the one single rude person I had to work with on a very hard job offshore on the caspian sea with some very very nice Russians and Kazakh people.
Estonians may not be racist, but they hate, like really HATE Russians. And I speak Russian and all the hate I get from my classmates.... for nothing else than just speaking in Russian with my friends... awful.

There is a type of Russian that is very disliked, the type who yells "Росси́я" and wanting back soviet ruling who is usually the kind that does not speak Estonian. Estonians in general do not hate Russians in general.
They're, maybe less in Tallinn, but here in Tartu people tend to take you far from the top, I mean if you work you never arrive at the top also if you're the best. I playing music, 38 years in it, last 15 across Europe, here I have a problem, I write to every place, nobody reply, who do offer me a free concert (no money), who says simple No, without any other word (education is not their power). I do some concert thanks to friends, but nothing more. Now I try to open a business and I find so hard, also if the people tell me it's so easy, not if you're not estonian. The phrase I listen in all situation is:'You not understand', what do you mean (my answer), and again 'you not understand', just because I'm not estonian. Some of my friends (I'm Italian, we're italians and we like to go around together and have fun) are arabian looks like (me too), and sometimes we have problems in bars because some drunk stupid think we're terrorist, or we're from country estonian have fight with, well no, I'm from that island in the middle of the sea, Sicily, and I know what multicultural society is, I grow up with African schoolmate, with middle east ecc ecc. Estonian racism is kinda weird. It usually goes like this: we see someone from a different country and we act nice around them. But the second they turn around we start judging and stereotyping. Estonians you know exactly what I'm talking about. We may not show it, but we are VERY judging. Atlast that's my experience living here. I personally don't like it, but its how we act especially the older generation. Of course most younger Estonians are just curious since not many people who aren't Estonian live here.

I think this is the case in almost every country... people who are racist rarely ever tell this to your face. No matter which country you are in, most racist people don't "come out" :-) I don't think stereotyping is racist though... well it depends what kind of stereotyping of course... I have experienced both, racist people and non racist people everywhere I have been.
We Estonians *very* judging towards everyone, especially our Estonian neighbours. But the thing about Asians is that stereotype that they are hard-working, intelligent and - most importantly - quiet. So something similar to that how we like to see ourselves.
Some Estonians are really racists who are covered by non racists luckily. Today I experienced real racism in Tartu while crossing road. Horrible feeling

many people here aren't racist at all but there are still some, i'd say a lot of people are homophobic, transphobic and abelist more than they are racist but i don't have stats to prove it it's just fom my experience and also a lot of people here have stuff against russians or very religios people but that's only bc of the history i think, idk just thought i'd share my thoughts as an estonian :)
