Hi Dorie, thanks for making this video and answering the question that a farmed live tree is indeed better for the environment. I'm creating a video series on my channel on the Solutions to Climate Change and really wanted to know! Merry Christmas!
I bought a 4 ft' Barcana artificial tree in 1983 and it still looks as bushy and good as the day I bought it(now 38 yrs old). So if 6 yrs is the breakeven for the environmental cost, it was well worth it. I put it in a bedroom and have a larger real tree in the main room.
Like they say in video; it depends on what you get. A wire and PVC tree can be super cheap like $40, but its not going to look as real or last as long as a more expensive tree. You get what you pay for.
Our artificial tree has lasted probably a decade and a half. Definitely looks fake, so not a really expensive one but instead we just drown it in decorations that we have hoarded over its lifetime.
They do start to fall apart after a while, especially the cheaper options. I had a wire and PVC tree for about 8 years before it looked just horrible and scraggly and the PVC ‘needles’ were falling off.
