Couldn't agree more. I was looking at joining a club this year - everything looked great, but then I read the dress code section on the website and it literally had a whole paragraph describing how you must only wear proper length white socks, and that dark socks or ankle length were not permitted. Told them to jog on. I took a friend to a club in london once (Wanstead) and a typical old-boy member literally walked over from an another hole (2 fairways over) to ask him "did they let you out at the pro shop wearing those?" because he was wearing a pair of cargo shorts. It's just madness. Absolute madness.

I just wear long pants, and that bypasses the sock issue altogether. For the monthly medals I usually put on a pair of stockings and suspenders underneath.

I played in a charity society day 2 years ago (at a standard golf club). A club member acted as the starter and he was angry at people wearing white socks with shorts, to the point where people had to buy some black socks from the pro shop. All I kept thinking was “these are people who play once or twice a year, they’re doing it for charity, your club is making money, there’s a chance to tease them back into the game more regularly, and your idiocy over some bloody socks has totally put them off”. My mates and I still talk about that incident and it’s the first thing in my mind when I think of that golf club. That’s the kind of crap that puts people off the game :- (

I remember traveling to Sydney to play a competition game when I was kid. I had standard white socks on, the ones that go up to your shin. The club pro said 'you're local club must be more relaxed, we usually wear long socks here. Thats ok though son get out and have some fun." I got paired up with a local snob. Boring round with crap talk. Putted out on the 18th and shook the blokes hand, I said "nice to meet you, good game." He replied 'Yeah, you too, next time wear long socks or long pants.' Then turned and walked off. I can say I haven't been back since.

Back in 2003 I got invited to a corporate golf day at Edgbaston GC. It was a hot summer day and my pal had tailored shorts on with ANKLE LENGTH SOCKS!!! The starter told him he would not be allowed on the course wearing them, so he had to buy a pair of knees length Adidas socks from the pro shop at £19! He looked like Higgins from Magnum P.I. which I called him all day.

Throughout my childhood I was a member at a very snobby club that shall remain nameless...let's just say it is a royal club near some famous tennis courts :) I was constantly harassed by the Club Secretary and many other senior members about all sorts of things that were wrong with my clothing. Socks, in particular, really got them het up! Mine were always too long/too short/wrong colour/wrong material/too stripy or just downright wrong in any way they could be. Eventually, I asked the Secretary why long socks were necessary and he replied "The sight of your calves would offend the lady members". This kind of ridiculous snobbery is the worst kind of arrogance...especially as I would repair pitch marks, rake bunkers, replace divots and generally be courteous in my behaviour while wearing the wrong socks, but the dinosaurs would parade around in their kaki knee lengths while destroying the course. I judge people by their behaviour, not the length of their socks. I am at a different, better club now.

I’m new to golf and was looking at one of my local clubs rules the other day and in their so called “relaxed dress code” was the rule you have to wear white socks which imo is so petty and pointless it’s put me off going to that club . I was telling my brother who used to play golf and he told me about a charity day he did on another local course where because of the heat most people were wearing shorts and one person had the temerity to wear trainer socks and was spotted by an irate club member who came storming over and started ranting at the lad for wearing the wrong socks . It’s the type of thing that will put people of playing because it starts you thinking if they can be so petty about socks what else will you get pulled up for

As junior members we would take our steel spike golf shoes off to enter the terrace area, buy a drink from the rear bar area for under age and associate members, who weren't allowed in the bar area and then sit on the terrace in our socks drinking an after play drink. One day the senior members taught us that sitting on the terrace in your socks is not gentlemanly behaviour and we never did it again. We all of course we're wearing white high knee socks though. Ah, the good old days.

enjoyable. But I must say I noticed Coach's calf length white socks right away in your recent vlog. Those socks wouldn't be permitted at my club. I guess some sort of dress code makes sense: no jeans, no cut off shorts, collared shirt, hats removed indoors, etc. It is about you being courteous to others with your appearance and them being courteous to you and your guests. Comfort can't be the only criteria or people would wear pajamas on overseas air flights. Most of us can't play like a pro but at least we can dress like a pro. I agree though that we need to grow the game and common sense should prevail.

This was great! I haven't watched in a while as I stopped golfing almost 18 months ago (I formed a baseball swing somehow and couldn't fix it, started to hate playing so taking a decade off in hopes the stupid baseball swing goes away and I can enjoy the bloody game again) but loved the video!

yes bruhs I thought the sock debate was a thing of the past, until I turned up to a pennant match earlier this year against a 'Royal' club and one of my teammates had black ankle socks on...he was summarily told to change them, not because of the length but because of the colour, they wouldn't let him on the course with black socks. Flabbergasted, it was as if I'd traveled back in time....now if someone can explain the 'no hats in the clubhouse' rule I'd be very grateful, that's mythical genius that is ....cheers

I caddied for a friend at Open Qualifying a few years ago, and some committee member at the club we were at made my mate buy ME some socks from the shop, as I was wearing trainer socks ! Before I was allowed to caddy 'im not playing I'm carrying' I protested ' are you on the course ' 'yes' I replied 'then the rules apply' you oik! (Made that last bit up he didn't call me an oik) I could name the club but it could have happened at any one of a 100 in the UK, isn't Coventry a lovely city btw........😂

My club allows "sports socks of any colour as long as they cover the ankle" blows my mind that anyone would care if they could see your ankle or not.

me and my mates reckon the whole golf attire regs comes from golf clubs in the past having memberships made up primarily of military types. Thus the need to be in an a uniform of sorts all the time and therefore to have rules attached to ensure you have the correct uniform.

One of our members had a go at me as I wasn't wearing white socks. He had to look pretty hard to see the sliver of blue above my shoes. The ironic thing is that he looked like an unmade bed with his whole ensemble. There's got to me more pressing issues in golf than socks.

25 years ago I was member of a club and been paired with this miserable old cout. Nothing was going to make him happy. I was playing well and birdied a few holes. Got comments like 'lucky the cup was there or that putt would have been 10' past' etc. The only time he smiled was when we went back to the clubhouse and pointed out the dress code sign stating socks must be knee length. Naturally I was wearing short ones.

This is so true, I was playin a course recently and some members got a bit upset about my sock choice and i was asked by the pro shop to change my socks. you probably think I was wearing pink, orange or even tie dye socks but no. I was wearing shorts with plain black socks and black golf shoes and was told I had to wear white socks with shorts lol. who wants to wear white socks with black shoes i'm not Michael Jackson and the black socks blended in with the shoes nicely.

I thought this was a myth until recently. We were walking to the tee at a club and the starter came charging over to tell me and a mate we can't play with black socks on and would have to change them or buy some white ones from the pro shop. Crazy.

Didn't even know this was a thing. Though I mostly play the local city courses, during my league days it's not uncommon to see t-shirt and jeans at certain ones. I like the relaxed environment of my local courses, kind of nice to just show up and play or practice golf.

Having just played golf in 30 degree heat in hampworth in Hampshire I can conclude that I think my sock game was on point. Also I shot in the 80's for the first time ever and on a new course. I'm improving every game. But with my new driver swing I definitely need a lower lifted club ball going way too high.

A few years back I had the pleasure of playing at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney and had to borrow some socks as the pairs I had were either the wrong colour, not long enough (had to cover your ankle) or had a logo on. It's not just the Brits that suffer from this malaise 🤣

I once had to buy a pair of white socks from the pro shop at a members club I played at as a guest as my dark socks weren't allowed to be worn with shorts.

Ankle socks all day long...why would you want to have a tan mark on your legs....surely no club still insists on calf socks.....crikey we have just introduced being allowed to wear jeans and t shirts and trainers in clubhouse at Chislehurst a private club in Kent...modern times👍👍 the reasoning is if its good enough for a restaurant then its good enough for a golf club...👍👍👍👍

I’ve got an oldish pair of trousers which I keep for wearing when I go to the practice area as it can sometimes get a bit dirty when you’re hitting from one place. They’re fully compliant with the dress code but I wouldn’t wear them to go into town. I change your not my non-dress code compliant to go into the shops if I’m doing that after practice

I've had to buy white socks in South Africa because I wore shorts and only white socks with no logo were acceptable. In the UK only the length seems to be an issue at some clubs if you wear shorts. While I am all for keeping a bit of class on the course, what you stick your feet in shouldn't be a fkin issue.

I was bought some black Ping socks for Christmas and have black Ecco golf shoes so logically I’d like to wear black / black with shorts.. visited two clubs recently and their dress code stipulates white socks only with shorts, specifically ‘no black socks’ ... #bonkers !!!

I was a member at Saunton many years ago and had the audacity to try and sneak to the first tee of the East with shorts and short socks on. Thought I’d got away with it until a buggy appeared with the secretary in it and I was ordered back to get changed! Some dinosaur had spotted me from the clubhouse and grassed me up. The same old git that wore the most tatty clothes that wouldn’t have looked out of place on a Somalian pirate. I wasn’t the only one that spotted the irony.

Mark, I went to play in a comp at a local club and because I had shorts on I was not allowed to until I had changed my socks from black to white ones! Apparently this was a club rule which only applied to shorts not trousers. I was not told this until after I p had paid the green fee ,the pro would very kindly sell me a pair though so I could play. 🤔

I make sure I have a 'hole in one' every time I play golf......sometimes 2 or 3 actually....

I got a telling off from an ex captain for wearing black socks with shorts. The club sent an email out a few weeks later saying you can wear black socks if you’re wearing black shoes😂 think they should concentrate more on the game rather than what socks people wear

Tour Issue toe socks. 10 individual sleeves for each toe with a Circle T stamped on each toenail. Cut 3 strokes off my game.

When wearing shorts, "Lo-Cut," or "Quarter" socks are best. The "No-Show" socks are best left to long distance runners. No reason for a man to show his ankle bones on the course. Played my first round in over 20 years wearing shorts yesterday. Finally found some that had a more "tapered" leg, like the kind Matt has. "Grandpa" shorts on the course look plain horrible. 🤢 Fine for the beach. Between socks and shorts, realized that OCD can be dangerous.

The sock needs to be long enough, or high enough, to accommodate wiping your club face before or after your shot. That's all. Ordinarily, your pants leg would be sufficient, but in the event of wearing shorts, your socks must be able to step into the breach.

I have a friend that played royal Cromer not too long ago. He was unaware that you had to wear long socks when wearing shorts. He played the first 9 holes with ankle socks and shorts, for the back 9 the pro came and found him and said you need to wear trousers or long socks with those shorts. Because he doesn’t own any long socks he was forced to buy long socks from the pro shop. The socks were Harry Porter quidditch style red and yellow stripes. He showed me the photo and I have to say he looked stupid. He looked smarter before with his ankle socks. The two of us are tennis coaches and appreciate that like tennis golf has certain traditions but this is ridiculous I think tennis has moved on to a degree I think golf needs to catch up!!!

White socks with shorts look okay. Any other colour looks horrid. So, in that sense, the rules of clubs make sense...BUT...ultimately who gives a toss? I'd rather see people playing than not.

It's obviously a Brit thing.. I live in France, and they just don't care what you wear, what clubs you play with, or even how good you are... as long as you enjoy GOLF and allow others to do the same (be courteous) then live and let live.. life is too short to care about socks, trousers/shorts or any other garb....

People who wear shorts for golf or anything else do so because they are not as warm as trousers and therefore are more comfortable. It makes no sense to then reduce the comfort by wearing long socks. Having said that I'm so grateful there are no naturist days at golf clubs. Just imagine that or preferably don't imagine that if you prefer to keep your breakfast down 🤣

I buy the socks for the new tech, since my feet sweat a lot they do help me by keeping dry and the stench goes down of course.. Not concerned with appearance as they are all cut so low now, because of Lockey, that you can't even see them beneath the shoe line.

I'm your age group and lived through this idiocy in Canada - had to wear long socks or tennis type socks - not regular sport socks - being a tennis player I was fully supplied. Now I see my 6'3" all legs 18 year old son wear colourful calf length socks with sneakers and he looks ridiculous (and he went golfing this way 2 days ago) - he thinks I look stupid with all black tennis length socks with golf shoes. Golf has a sock problem for sure.

It'd very much a UK golf issue. I used to live in the US and UK (now in Spain) and the Draconian dress code if UK clubs, plus travel time from London, put me off ever playing.

Not being allowed to tuck bottoms of trousers into socks when the course is like a bog is he one that gets me. A guy crossed the fairway one time to give off to someone for tucking bottoms of trousers into socks he was soon told where go as the guy was wearing plus fours.
