Are Horned Ones Any Good in Patch 5.1? - Lizardmen Unit Focus

I wasn't surprised that Cold One Riders had such a mixed reception because they've burned a lot of people over the years, and not just because of rampage. Horned Ones, are basically everything you could ever want out of Lizardman cavalry, being faster, harder hitting (except in very narrow circumstances), very offense-oriented but still tough, and trading exceptionally well against very legit opposition. They're not the toughest cavalry in the game, but in a roster shared with Carnosaurs, bringing the pain against both rival cavalry and lots and lost of infantry - including heavily armored foes like Dwarfs or Chaos Dwarfs - they bring a lot, and that's plenty.

I absolutely love the fact that Horned Ones are a true generalist unit, which can play a multitude of roles. I think that its funny that they have a Charge bonus of Melee Cavalry- 43 and the Melee Defense of Shock Cavalry. Thats one messed up hybrid 😮. If they could get Charge Bonus in mid 50's and Melee Defense of 36-40 they would represent a nice mix of both. But I guess I am always complaining about the numbers 😅. Great unit- it literally saves Lizardmen Cavalry. Great video. Thanks

It's definitely a reward for going through the trouble of getting the buildings (and extra local recruitment slots are great regardless).

I really love this series - it's wonderful hearing someone's reasoning and explanation of WHY units behave the way they do. I've got thousands of hours in this game but my opinions of units is mostly just based on emotional impressions/experiences. It's great to see these sorts of investigations into units that I generally don't use all that much - it's given me an appreciation for many of the more obscure parts of the tech tree.

And then sometimes we find out like with Stegadons they were nerfed without us looking and suddenly became un-nerfed back to their old glory. That was a rude shock to me. Lizardmen without kick-rear Stegadons? Chaos Heresy.

0:27 Just a small correction, you can only build one of the two buildings in a minor settlement, the "Weapon-Crafters' Commune" is only available in major settlements. Still great video and good summary of the unit! Played a Lizardmen campaign recently and the Horned Ones did their part very well (not to mention looked really cool). Keep up the great work!

Lizardmen have so many good anti infantry options, I like using them as an anti large/SEU anvil to feral carnosaur hammer, good speed, mass and MD allows them to pin down high mass units while the feral carnosaur deals the killing blows
@OffToBattle
@OffToBattle 2 месяца назад
I can see that working well. Nothing is going to blow through them after all, and they have just enough speed for the job.

I like Horned Ones tremendously more than Cold Ones, but, still only about moderately in the grand scheme of things They're functional as a cavalry unit, but suffer from the same flaw as the Cold One in getting them stuck in units, making them take a lot more casualties than they probably should, but the fact that infantry they charge is significantly more likely to just die/break is some fair soothing of that woe. I still think they're a bit of a sore thumb in the roster, but the fact they can actually deliver significant damage, and actually can stand and fight for a bit, a virtue I actually highly value in cavalry, means they actually have a role in Lizardmen, unlike Cold Ones which are just poor into most situations, and should just not be taken deliberately unless your chronic need for a micro unit can't wait until tier 3. I don't think the loss of versatility in taking these over Kroxigors is always worth it, but, you can get pretty good results out of Horned Ones without using every drop of micro you have or building for them specifically, and they are tough enough to still have some versatility themselves. Plus, the speed is quite handy for some matchups, and while it's a bit late at tier 3, they ARE good for catching skirmish cav and other similar units Lizardmen struggle to chase down, and there's still some time for that to be valuable before Carnosaurs, levelled up characters, or kitted Stegadons claim that niche for themselves, and Ripperdactyls can't really go in on multiple such units like Horned Ones can. Them being mildly inconvenient to recruit is probably their biggest flaw, though. Lizardmen are currently hurting for building slots pretty bad, so a unit that asks for two had better either be piggybacking off of buildings you want anyways, or be really really good, and Horned Ones aren't quite either. It's not a HUGE ask, and those buildings do gotta go somewhere anyways, but, if it's two buildings for these guys, or one to throw a feral Stegadon at something, and I don't currently own the entire south pole as Oxyotl, I'm probably leaning Stega. When I have them I enjoy using them, but when I don't have them, I rarely hurt for them, y'know? If I could replace the garisson cold ones with a unit of Horned Ones, I would be so happy, though. Directly comparing Cold Ones and Horned Ones, there's just no comparison. If the Carnosaur is Saitama, then Horned Ones are Krillin, and Cold Ones are Cailou.
@OffToBattle
@OffToBattle 2 месяца назад
Some harsh comparisons there! Horned Ones can do damage to a unit (as opposed to a single entity) a lot faster than a Feral Stegadon, so that's part of the balancing of the scales you have to do. I lost a couple fighting a giant Volkmar army (well, him reinforcing a full stack) in my final Kroq-Gar campaign (it will rest in peace with 5.1.1), the third survived, and I had a few in my second army too with four stegadons doing their thing. So, I ate a lot of damage with them, but I also inflicted tons. It's a useful unit, just not one that'll survive everything you throw it against.

Great video as alwasy! I like these guys. Like you said, they are hard hitting. They are the perfect hammer for your anvil. And their stats are definetly very solid. And thats how they perform. I got an idea for your videos. I dont know if it is doable. Maybe after you show every buff the unit can get throgh research and lord skills you could show the Unit stat card again with all these buffs active at rank 9. A side by side comparision before skills/buffs/ranks and after. Trough that we could see easier what upgrade potential the unit has. But if that is too much work its fine like it is. I just wanted to bring that up :)

I was doing a Kroq-gar campaign lately and I gave him a doomstack of these boys since I was tired of always using saurus and carnosaurs. I was amazed at the amount of damage they do, they just need an oracle nearby healing and they destroyed everything. Of course they aren't THE BEST option but since then I put some in fast armies for the extra power they bring
@OffToBattle
@OffToBattle 2 месяца назад
That's an excellent summation of what I've seen. Not as tough as standalone dinos, not as tarpit as infantry but why would they be, but eye-popping damage because of how the number of entities factors in.

I usually skip cold one riders in favor of feral cold ones simply for the sake of affordability, but horned ones are definitely worth bringing. Yeah they won't turn the tide of a fight the way grail knights or chaos knights will, but they can seize the gap better than most units in the Lizardmen roster. Plus, they look insanely amazing. I love the way they embrace that Mesoamerican motif in their design.
@OffToBattle

The aesthetic is indeed great. And armor-piercing gives them something even the Chaos Knights don't have, though Chaos Knights are just plain tougher IIRC.

Been waiting for this one! I am so happy you got the same impression i did from these guys. Horned ones are a unit i will swear by til the day i die (or they get nerfed into the ground for some reason). There's nothing quite like watching how quickly they demolish low tier infantry and other fragile units while still holding their own against units of similar or higher tier.

Yeah, they're pretty hot stuff. Not the tankiest part of the roster, but you have tanks. (Ark of Sotek for instance...) These bring lots of damage and it's great.

Given the chance they absolutely will, but I'd try to charge them in the flank/ rear just to make extra sure. Stegadons and Carnosaurs are tougher and go down slower, but for DPS, these matter. Which is why I basically try to mix them if the situation allows me to...

The problem woth Lizardmen cavelry like horned ones is I have no reason to use them. Why would I ever use any cold one unit when I can just get carnosaurd or stegadons, which does the same job as cold ones but better.
@OffToBattle

Over time it works out but they don't kill massed units as quickly. That can matter.
@norsehorse84
@norsehorse84 2 месяца назад
Pretty sure cavalry as a whole is far better for hammer and anvil tactics compared to SEMs, since they dont allow for escape, and will damage and kill models more evenly. Theoretically, Cold Ones and Horned Ones have more overall frontloaded damage on the charge compared to the dinos, who probably kill only a few models on the charge due to their now smaller splash attacks.
@dustrockblues7567
@dustrockblues7567 2 месяца назад
@@norsehorse84I'm not convinced hammer and anvil is an important tactic. By the time my cavalry is done disrupting the missile backline and contesting the enemy cavalry it's already time for the army losses penalty and the battle is over.

Horned ones do work, very good generalist cav. Even against SE if you get an isolated surround they will do well against most targets. Kroq-gar starts off near the best settlement in the game (Ka-sabar i think) which has a building to reduce local recruit times so you can pump out these guys and temple guard in one turn. These are probably the highest dps unit in the lizard roster
@OffToBattle
@OffToBattle 2 месяца назад
Ah I didn't realize Ka-Sabar does that? My last campaign I had to run around burning Volkmar to the ground to keep it, so I didn't have time to develop it much. And yeah, for wrecking general enemy forces I think they are the highest DPS melee unit. They just take a lot of damage in the process (high leadership "helps").

ah yes, the horned ones. MP fellas have been perplexed for half a decade at why this unit is so popular on SP. i will not lie it is nigh impossible to squeeze their value out on MP without using up most of your healing. and then i turn to SP and consistently get 3k+ value. i believe this is due to their base stats being JUST below viability, as well as their massive speed boosts in campaign. empire cav has shown me first hand the difference between a 70-80 speed cav and a 90-100 speed cav is night and day. remember that charge dmg is dynamic, based on mass speed and charge bonus and as such more speed means more units go flying. overall horned ones are a top 10 cav that churns through the flanks and backline like butter while saurus, skinkies and monsters mop up the rest. S tier unit imo.
@OffToBattle
@OffToBattle 2 месяца назад
Not being a multiplayer guy, it's fantastic to hear what people in your position are seeing. That and without boosts 66 Speed has to land the Cold One Riders into a special layer of hell for popular sentiment. Horned Ones are very legit in enough ways to really respect them.

Lizardmen have an economy problem. They need to expand because their settlements aren't big enough, and they need to be fighting because their economy suffers. But man, their tech tree and some lord skills make them killing machines.
@OffToBattle
@OffToBattle 2 месяца назад
I went through tons of that issue as Kroq-Gar and while I do want to finish a video on him and a few other lords in the near-ish future, he just really needs to fight. Having enemies in front of him, and eventually ambushing while other armies act as bait since he does get bonuses to that, helps him because just from his items he gets extra post-battle gold, and since you can't always be fighting, the dino upkeep reduction blessing helps. I mention partly because it applies to Horned Ones too. So does his Cold One unit XP buff.
