I think nowadays people want a planty experience. Yes, you can buy plants from a big box store at a reasonable price, but no one will be available to answer your questions or advise you on how to style the plant in your home. I feel we are moving away from plant hoarding to plant styling. Think of a place like Ikea. They sell reasonable goods at a reasonable price, but half the joy of going to the store is seeing how they've designed their rooms. You see how they've put things together, and you can imagine it in your own space. It's like seeing clothes on a mannequin. You can picture yourself in that outfit rather than seeing clothes just folded and stacked. I think the next generation in plant stores will be seeing plants styled in spaces, using products that are also sold in there. Then, incorporate spaces where you can sit and relax and enjoy a beverage surrounded by beautifully styled plants and accessories. Make each visit worthwhile for the customer.

The nursery right by my house, literally on the corner of the cross street i live off, has a coffee shop inside. Business seems REALLY good for them, theyve expanded the greenhouse and parking lot, and people still will park on that cross street to go in there! Its NUTS! I love going there, the seating they have in the greenhouse is just so relaxing, whenever i go theres always oodles of people getting coffee, shopping for plants, sitting in the greenhouse with friends. I love seeing that they seem to be doing really well! They also have workshops and theyll drill drainage holes in pots that you buy there. I don't go as often as i would like, but its one of my favorite places to be 💖

I do find that my local shops usually carry the same plants as always. Once you’ve been there, shopped there, there’s not much new to see.

I like the live sale way of buying on Instagram, plantstory, and tik tok honestly. I buy a lot on Etsy or used to but with the live sales you get to see what you're getting and the vibe is just different people actually seem happy and like they wanna be there, and you meet a lot of great people. Compared to a brick and mortar where you feel like you have to buy and they're dependent on you buying especially if said store works on a commission basis just really stressful to all parties. I just feel brick and mortar will continue to get smaller and smaller until nonexistent or just be literally like a booth type setup where their "store" opens once or twice a month at local market.

There’s a plant coffee shop in Philly called Safa Plant Co. They actually started as a tea/coffee shop and started selling plants during the pandemic to survive. I love going there to study and sometimes end up buying a plant even if I don’t mean to. The vibe is the best form of advertisement.

I have gotten most from Facebook marketplace or a local nursery. There is a local plant shop that popped up and they have a plant design business. I love what they offer in their store- unique trellises, cute pots etc. I think they will stay because they are diversified.

First, I just want to say I love your longer videos! Lol second, I actually prefer to buy my plants in person and from a family/ privately run company. I avoid big box stores at all costs if I can. For example, I will drive over an hour to a local nursery that is family owned to purchase plants because I know them all by name (as do they know mine) and I know they are going to have an awesome variety of rare plants, not as rare plants, outdoor plants, pots, good soil (Fox Farm) and fertilizers etc.. they also have a really nice soil bar that they use Ocean Forest by Fox Farm and a mixture of other good stuff for an aroid mix where you can buy plant and a pot and repot your plant right there before you even take it home! It’s genius and I love it! It’s in a small town and has a very friendly and fun environment always! Idk about anyone else, but I will pay a little more and drive a little further for this type of plant shopping experience any day of the week over a big box store.

The one company that has nailed this concept for years is - Terrain, which is owned by the Anthropologie company. It's a complete immersive experience. I always buy a coffee and some food when I go to the different locations. Of course, they have beautiful displays which make you want to buy every plant and home good available. I end up spending about 2hrs+ in their stores.

I had the idea to do plants and coffee locally, before I even knew they were a thing, because there's hardly any plant shops around, but I'm not in a position to financially do that. I do have the plan eventually. I've been wanting to do some sort of hybrid with coffee and/or books and plants, for well over a year now

I go into my local plant shop to see new plants I may not have concidered before. Perhaps a plant shop should do a new plant of the week that is NOT all over instagram already...I love the idea of plant shop letting places like coffee shops as well. It would be a great way to meet local plant people AND you could pull my first point in by having table books of different, lesser popular plants with detailed information. If a plant in the books is requested, the plant shop (who has more plant connections) could try finding it for the customer or even use these books as catalogs to order from. The shop could get the plant and they could pick it up in store the next week. I also go to plant shops to see planters and other decorative plant things. I hate ordering pots or something and not getting what I expected. He shop could be a hub of sorts for local artists to sell their planty paraphernalia like pots and hanging baskets. You could even have weekly activity or class nights to make their own. The local artist could get some exposure and income while the shop gets the same. Maybe even have an animal sort of gimmick for this coffee shop like cats or something. I'd also love the idea of a plant shop showcasing and selling beneficial insects....its hard to get things like that online. I raise praying mantises and they are incredibly interesting and Beautiful Creatures. They could be a beautiful addition to the ambiance of the space with cases filled with plants. Anyways, hope someone benefits from these ideas!

We have a local place that does this called grow. they serve cocktails, food, and coffee, and have a plant bar and terrarium bar. it's pretty cool. but more of an experience, not just a place you go to buy plants, but a place you go on a date and come home with a plant. we have a big place locally that sells wholesale and to public. they get all kinds of great stuff. and a few other large greenhouse. we also have some cool hydro shops and they're all pretty competitive in general but tended to drop their prices well after everyone else. all common stuff I can get way cheaper local and there are often less common stuff that is still cheaper.

I started out buying from a garden centre that has a decent house plant selection. But they are all common and so I found myself searching online because I kept seeing more interesting plants in videos no physical store was selling near me. Their little specials corner only had plants anyone here would probably call common. I'd go to a hybrid shop if it were in a greenhouse for example with plants too big and/or too fragile to live inside our homes. Accompanied with interesting plants for sale, that can like it in a house.. and a place to sit and marvel at the jungle with a cup of coffee

If people in the plant business want to perpetuate the business and give it longevity, more companies need to invest in schools. Volunteering, giving tours, donating to teachers. I don’t own a business, I just love plants, and I volunteer at a middle school in a lower income neighborhood and give kids the experience of plants that they wouldn’t normally have. When I started this, the plant community, including shops I regularly visit, clammed up and there was no willingness to donate or come in and be a guest speaker. Nothing. So I am funding this myself, using my plants as stock plants or buying ones to teach kids how to propagate. Even Costa Farms was unresponsive to emails for donations. The only place that was willing to help was a local greenhouse who donates tours and for $5 a kid they get to make a succulent garden with all the materials from pots to soil to the stones and plants. Honestly, I love plants, the plant community not so much. When I asked people I considered “Plant pals” for help, cuttings they complained about having too many of, no one responded. It’s disheartening. But I’m not sugar coating it with the students, and the expectation of them is to give more freely.

I very much like to go to our local botanic garden´s plant events, where sellers (both professional and private) can sell their rarer plants without any commission by the garden (except for the usual entrance fee). It´s great to meet the collectors and plant owners in person while searching for plants I´d like - one can find really cool plants there and have great chat in the process. Outside these plant events, which I enjoy the most, I shop online (I prefer smaller online shops in my country, where I know the owners) or find stuff through FB groups with other plant collectors (I always search for cuttings/plantlets). I never ever buy plants from hardware and furniture stores - they are always infested with all kind of pests and look severely mistreated.

I think a lot of this has to do with the kind of plant person you are. There are plant geeks who are obsessed with plants (looks around nervously 😅) and every aspect of growing them and caring for them. There are also plant decor people who are looking to beautify their space with plants. Of course there are crossover types who do a bit of both. I think hybrid stores might appeal to the kinds of people who are more focused on decor and experience versus the first set of people who are interested in biology, taxonomy, morphology and collecting.

I'm in Canada so availability is Probsbly different.. but I do go to my local plant shops and greenhouses. I've usually checked their website ahead of time and I'm heading there because they have a specific plant at a reasonable price (and then usually impulse buy a bunch more stuff while I'm there 😅). The only plants I buy online are from other Canadian plant shops that are further away who offer shipping (again it's about finding specific plants at a good price).. I'm too skeptical to get plants from Etsy and businesses inside Canada understand shipping in our extreme weather and there's no need to worry about import/export/acclimation. The plants I buy from big box (grocery/hardware/etc) are usually opportunistic.. like I'm there already but can't stay away from the plant section and I buy plants that I'm surprised to encounter (stuff that used to be rare but is becoming more accessible). I also go to expos or when local fb plant groups have a sale/swap. A few times a year my friends and I will do a plant day and go to a few shops or greenhouses just to browse and see what we can find.

That plant coffee shop would be cool if it existed in my ATL market. I am more of a juice bar smoothie person so combining a juice bar and plants would be my business idea. I’m guessing that LA plant shop will have expensive coffee to cover the real estate. For me, I shop mainly Trader Joe’s and big box stores based on price and health of the plant. Then Etsy for a few rare purchases but I cut back on shopping by the end of the summer.

I have over 200 plants... and growing up most households I visited my have a single plant. I would say covid made plants popular outside of original plant lovers because if you could not afford a cat or a dog you could afford a plant which was a one time event. I think because of the rising demand "investors" got involved to try and captialize on things most of the so called plant lovers went away. Whats starting to be left is those who actually loved plants to begin with and those who discovered a passion. Most people who buy plants aren't willing to put that much time and effort in to them. Which is why there Is a contraction in the market. The larger stores are late to the party but at the same time kill the niche market for plants at least from a brick and mortar aspect. I think this hybrid thing is a good idea.

The two physical stores I frequent and buy from most often are general garden centers which have added small greenhouse areas. Both places carry a moderate number of unusual/rare tropicals as well as the standard Pothos, spiders and African violets. Very importantly, they bring in new varieties often, so I go back often to see what's new. I also now buy my outdoor plants and supplies from them - good business model in my opinion.

I would like to buy my plants in person. Shipping, plus insulation and heat can add $45-50 to my one plant. So after I pay that amount, I’m left acclimating a now $200 plant for months and that’s only IF they recover. I had a king clarinervium that did not recover. It fell out of the pot and plastic wrap during shipping when it was about 40 degrees at night. So the roots were just dry and floating around the box. Anyway, that’s only one of a few plants that didn’t make it but I’ve had a ton that were just fine. Right now there’s 6” of snow on the ground and I would like to plant shop 😂, in person.

Living in a third world country, we have plant nurseries with no greenhouse, no building, just earth and some shade cloth. They usually have the common and hardy varieties in cheap prices (a dollar or two). Although they are in bad soil, in bad pots, but I don't care. Those all things can easily be changed. Those same plants sold online or in better plant stores, planted in special mixes in better pots, cost at least 3 times more. I would never buy them because anyways i have to change the soil and pot, so why spend more. But for rare or uncommon plants, importers and private collectors selling props are better. The fancy plant shops charge way too much for them, so i never prefer them. So maybe this can be done for uncommon collectible plants, but for the common things, i love the conventional nurseries built on raw earth.

I’m a Gen Xer - I prefer to get my plants at a big box store or online (Etsy, Costa, etc.). The problem I have in my area (west central FL) is that the smaller plants shops either have delusions of grandeur with their prices or they don’t advertise like they should, so you have to know to know where they are. Also, the ONLY time I’ve had pest-infested plants is from smaller shops…make of that what you will, I sure can’t figure out why that is.

Most plant shops are over priced. I buy from big box stores, Facebook marketplace, or my local plant groups. So much cheaper.

I hate big box stores to buy houseplants, because for 1 they have them in those death traps, which I understand but still hate them, also spider mites, any other bugs, very few actual shops have have bugs although I did buy a plant at a shop and it infested my collection but other then that NO BIG BOX STORES🤣

Or what about plants and cannabis for those states where they can do that? I mean, it’s a natural pairing.

With retail rent prices what they are… plant shops, are not sustainable.

I’ll stick with greenhouses. I don’t need some yuppy hipster barista fembot selling me some fancy coffee. I want to buy plants, not talk about when the next LGBTQFSHBEXYZ event is. I want to smell plants and potting mix. Not Paco Ribanne and soy lattes!!!

One of my favorite plant shops in AZ does sell coffee and they have a small area to chill. I hope they expand a little and make more space. In my opinion, many of these trendy plant shops that are yes, aesthetically amazing but are very expensive and only a certain percentage of customers will actually purchase over priced plants and pots. I’m all for supporting small businesses and I like that these planty places exist, I just see the other side of things…that not everyone can afford it.
