First of all, those begonias in that planter you're sitting near are looking amazing! I'm a converted mum lover. I used to buy them every year to decorate my porch in the fall, then toss them in the garbage until I watched one of your videos. I marched out and bought some organic Plant-tone, recharged my soil, and planted all those mums in my front flower bed. I was so excited in the spring to see them have hundreds of blooms on them, but unfortunately, our sizzling summer heat fried them. I cut them all back by a third and they came back and are beginning to bloom and are beautiful!

Here in zone 5 we of course do not get multiple bloom cycles. Many folks have perennial mums in their gardens, however it is too cool to plant them after taking them out of pots or planting in the fall because the roots do not have time to establish before a heavy frost. I like mums and sometimes I buy them and sometimes I don’t. And as for everyone, we all spend our money differently. What one person is willing to spend money on the next person is not! 🤷‍♀️🍂🍁🍂🤷‍♀️

First, your begonias are gorgeous! 😍 I love mums, especially pinks and purples that work for spring too. Appreciate the care info you provided, and options. I saw your comment about ordering asters (TY!) but I’m hoping to find some local. Immediate gratification! 😁 Walmart has some huge pots of mums for a lot less than other stores, several colors and a big impact. I bought some small pots on sale at Lowes, too.

Love mums! I used to buy them every year for my porch decor in the fall. I haven't bought any in a few years. But I did find a couple really small cute ones and put them in a hanging pot. I left them in the little pots toooo long had an emergency out of town, well the tops of the flowers went brown and they look awful. I did finally get them planted,, they are not wilted and the leaves are green..Do I just cut all the flowers that bloomed off and just let the other buds bloom?

@BukeyeStateGardening
@BukeyeStateGardening Год назад
Hello Ramos. If you use a mum in a pot for the fall and want to perennialize it, there are two options: at the end of the season, you could put it in an un heated garage where it stays cool ( but not freezing) over the winter, and take it back outside in spring when you start noticing new green growth. The second option (typically if you’re in zones 5-9, although check the zone if it’s specified on the tag) is to dig a hole and put the whole thing, pot and all, in the hole and backfill with soil. Be sure to leave about an inch of the pot exposed so you can easily pull it out of the hole come spring. If you choose the second option, be sure to leave the stems and foliage in place until spring. I hope this helps!

I love mums but i have the bad habit of letting them dry out on my front porch and you know what happens next ... I want to try popping them in the ground this year and see what happens. Is there a particular variety that is perenial to look for? I used to live in Northern NJ and previous owners had planted the most gorgeous burgundy mums that came back year after year through feet of snow in the spring they were amazing! I think I may do ornamental cabbage pansies and a pop of ornamental peppers for the porch instead this year.

I love them, but don't always have much luck, they seem to stay small and then die..... Is it best to plant them in one clump, from the pot you buy them in, or separate into 3 or 4 sections? Thanks so much from sunny south africa ☀️

I received a mum as a present and I was going to keep it as a perennial. After hearing they really like water, I’m not sure where to plant it after it finishes it’s blooming cycle. I do a lot of container pots because I’m in a wheelchair and it’s easier. Will they do well in pots as permanent home? Thanks for any info.
