Are non binary people trans?

Lots of people think they know, and want to forcibly assert, what a trans person is and isn't. I am of the mind that language is personal power, and we should all be able to freely self-identify.
I am trans. I am not cis, and therefore I am trans. I assert that my nonbinary identity places me underneath the trans umbrella. I am not interested in a physical or surgical transition, changing my name, or changing my pronouns at this time. That doesn't mean I am not trans. Don't @ me.

There's so much pressure when you're non binary to "pick a side"
@user-bz7qg5xw6h

That's not my issue. My issue is when they no longer choose to go by they. And subscribe to binary ideologies while rejecting the binary. (I don't even like Blaire White.) I'm honestly trying to educate myself but I do not agree.

my language doesnt have middle pronouns so im constantly being forced to pick if i want to use male or female ones. the way i act and the way i dress is constantly being described as either male or female. its tiring.

Being transgender and being non-binary or two different things TRUTH!
@fadedfiction2733
@fadedfiction2733 9 месяцев назад
@@leedubick5185I don't see how though? Either way your gender identity isn't the one typically associated with your sex assigned at birth, so by definition NB is trans. I can understand wanting to differentiate between binary transgenders and nonbinary transgenders, but I don't see the point in outcasting them from the label especially when so many nonbinary folk identify with being trans.
@fadedfiction2733

@@user-bz7qg5xw6hI know I'm 2 years late to answering, but being nonbinary isn't just about being some neutral state. For me, I know I'm closer to being a woman than a man, but I'm not either of those. My gender is somewhere in between and so I still conform to some gendered things such as wanting to wear feminine clothes, but I don't plan on transitioning physically for instance because my dysphoria is quelled through some social transition. I use he/they pronouns even though I'm closer to being a woman because for me it acknowledges my identity of being nonbinary while also keeping my male identity in there. I don't know why I feel dysphoric about someone using she/her pronouns on me, but then euphoric when feminine terms are used to describe me. I don't know why the word handsome makes me feel dysphoric and the word beautiful makes me feel euphoric thus seeming to be about a socially binary gender, but being fully perceived as a woman makes me suddenly dysphoric again. I feel dysphoric when being fully perceived as being either a woman or man, but that doesn't mean my gender is absent of any binary. It's very confusing and I wish it was simpler for me but that's what I got. Sorry if I made it more confusing I just kinda poured my thoughts out

Today i have been looking up on the topic of sex and gender and got to know that sex and gender are two different things. Sex is of only two types MAINLY male or female that depends on biology or genitals. The rare cases of biological sex is intersex. Now when talking about gender there's so many new gender with respect to individual. It's very confusing with all the different terms being used. In my country we have third gender system. Where we have three main genders male,female and trans. Transgender is someone who identifies themselves as born into the opposite sex And someone who transitions to their desired sex later on in life and will be termed as trans-woman if it was a man who turned into a woman and trans-man if it was a woman who turned into a man through hormonal treatment and sex change surgery or gender reassignment surgery . An intersex person can choose which sex they wish to identify with when they grow up. And I consider intersex person to be somewhat similar to transgenders . Now the toughest part is gender queer ,people who identify themselves as male,female or both or none . Queergender is the most confusing of them all. There's like so many confusing terms used like non binary, non conforming, gender fluid ,demi-gender, bigender, amalgagender, pangender, agender, etc. As the name Queer itself means strange or odd which depicts how people feel . Gender has already been made complicated with additional genders springing up day by day. Most people do not care about gender really, they just wanna know the persons sex as that is what people have been associated for gender and sex for a long time. It would be simple if you said you are a male queer or a female queer. this makes it simple for others and helps us understand you. When you say you are a male queer - I will understand that you were born as a male biologically and choose to differ in your opinion about it . And same goes for female queer. And It would be easy if we classify gender into three : Male, female and third gender/ trans. This is my personal opinions , I did not mean to offend anyone and you might have your own opinions.

Quasimodo why are watching this, just to spread hate? Its a petty little thing to hate on people you know dont agree with you. Just dont worry about other peoples personal life and whether theyre comfortable in their own skin okay. Why do people care so much whether someone else does something in their own personal life, like being lgbtq+. Thats like hating on people for eating food you dont like. Like chill man, its not your choice, so why does it matter?

May the divines bless you, or whomever or whatever your higher power is! I have been struggling so much with my "transness" especially since I feel like I'm an invalid transgender person because I'm AFAB and married to a straight, cis male. I really needed the reminder today that I'm trans enough and my identity is still valid, regardless of my relationship status or sexuality. Thank you for being a huge inspiration to many of us, especially me!

This is so great to listen to! As an enby person who have a hard time identifying under the "trans" umbrella because I have a lot of fear about somehow taking away something inherently trans about the experience that comes with the label, it's nice to just be told that it's up to you. When it comes to the "trans" label, I've experience both the push and pull of being told "you're trans" and "you're not really trans." Where I feel comfortable at is that I'm trans in definition but as far as the extent of my experiences as an enby person (and I know people's experiences vary but), I still struggle identifying with "trans". Maybe I also have a lot of things that I just need to deal with and come into terms with and I'll one day identify as trans, but for now, this is where I'm comfortable.

Thanks! Nice work; lots of passion. I appreciate your efforts! However, I have a little trouble thinking of "Trans" as a gender. More often, I think of it as a descriptor.....Not of what I am, but of where I am headed. When describing my gender, I typically choose "Gender Queer", because it's a nice catch-all : - ). I would consider using non-binary, but honestly I feel trapped between the two sides of the binary, so I'm still technically part of the binary. It is my belief that truly non-binary people transcend the confines of the binary. I consider non-binary to be trans, but a different kind of trans (transcendent versus transgender or you could think of it as up-and-out versus side-to-side).

Thank you so much for this explanation. As an enby, I wasn't sure if I have the right to call myself trans because I always thought transpeople are only those who have a full body transition, change their name and take hormones or just dress more androgynous. But your explanation does make sense.

I’m androgyne and for me I know I’m trans but not binary trans, clearly non-binary. Growing up I was barely allowed to be anything other than cis-het in my farmer family, school & community. I’m sexually queer and I always knew my gender wasn’t just cis male. When I started transitioning as a binary trans woman I realized it wasn’t who I was either. So if I wasn’t a cisgender man, nor a binary trans woman….but still have dysphoria with my gender and androgyne is the only thing that brings me peace and long term stability….then it’s who I am and people can just choose to understand or not understand. I’m here for me if that makes sense

Thank you so much!! You are so right, it is up to every nonbinary person if they consider themselves as trans! Just because we do not transition towards the opposite gender, isn't it perhaps like a detransition from the gender we were assigned at birth? I think it's because most people don't believe there are genders between m and f, that our gender identity is not taken serious and therefore we are not really counted as trans. But that is wrong, everyone's identity is valid and should be validated by others in turn!

I’m trying to figure this out and it sucks. I’ve spent the last 6 years alone with no friends or social life besides studying and working and the absolutely necessary social interaction with the family. I have no sex life because I feel like I’m weird and I can’t bring myself to undress or have someone touching my breasts. I hate them. I cut everyone out and isolate myself so my mum convinced me to go to therapy. It’s making me think about all these things that I very carefully avoided before and lowkey make me panic. I spent my whole life trying to be a woman but at the same time hating every minute of it. Really bad chest dysphoria, like really really bad bc my breasts are really big. But I don’t feel like a man either, nor I want to be a man I think. But I hate being assigned female so much and all the expectations and roles that come with it that I pend to the male side. The thing is I think i have internalised transphobia bc I can’t help but feel grossed out when I imagine my body in my mind.. no matter what form it takes.. my face gets so ugly with short hair and I feel so vulnerable and stared at. But sometimes I think I use the long hair to hide it. I know I need to figure this out bc my therapist helped me see that I’m literally living my life in auto-mode and it’s making me miserable. Like I gave up on myself to the point that I’m just waiting out until life ends eventually. I don’t want to kill myself but mainly because of the pain that would cause people around me and I don’t like being dramatic either. But I’m not exactly living it and I don’t seem to know how to. It’s so confusing.

Thanks for this, Ashley! You are so right that it's important to use the language that is true and authentic for us. I also wholeheartedly agree that nonbinary is a trans identity and falls under the trans umbrella. Likewise, I think that nonbinary is an umbrella of its own as well as an personal identifier, much like trans(gender) and queer are. I view 'trans' as an umbrella over everyone that isn't cis. I view 'nonbinary' as an umbrella over everyone who isn't cis and also isn't a binary transperson. I came out as genderqueer 7 years ago and understood this as a trans identity when I did. So I've really always identified as trans(gender) and used genderqueer/trans/transgender to describe myself. When 'nonbinary' became the more widely-used not binary trans identifier, I added it to the list of accurate descriptions of my gender. I like that it IS an umbrella term because I prefer identifiers that are more vague/less specific (like queer). That being said, I like to use trans or transgender because (a) these are also accurate descriptors and (b) because I feel it allows me to assert that I am a part of the trans community and that my lack of binary gender alignment (as well as femininity and alignment with female/feminine gender norms) doesn't change that. Where and with whom I am tends to dictate which word(s) I use and I think this goes back to what you talk about here in not using 'trans' as a personal descriptor because (even if subconsciously) of possible negative responses. All this to say: I'm totally with you, in both opinion and feeling.

Hey Ashley can you make a video on the different kinds of gender? Explain some differences between genders. There are 50 different genders to identify with on Facebook. Why would someone be a gender bender instead of gender non conforming? Is it possible to recognize someone as a gender bender without them stating it?Could I tell someone's gender identity by looking at them or talking to them without them actually telling me? I want a better understanding of the gender spectrum. Thanks for the video.

Hmm, interesting. I'm non-binary, but I think I don't identify as trans because I identify with both my assigned gender (I'm AFAB), but also the gender from the binary I was not assigned. So, the identify with the assigned gender part of cis is true, but it is not the only true thing about my gender. So, I view non-binary as the circle I am a part of and in the ven diagram of where NB has crossover with Trans is where I would not be, but I understand its existence. I see three circles in the model in my head. One for NB that overlaps with trans and one with binary that overlaps with trans. I'm in the not trans part of the NB circle. Although that is just a representation of trans and the binary/NB dimensions of gender. There are so many more dimensions. It's really kinda cool!

I think we need to worry less about language. Controlling language is always bad at the extremes. You said that language is something you "feel like you must live up to." Why let externalities control you like that? Accept yourself and live your life. You also seem to be dwelling on your 'experience of gender'; I'd say we should all aspire to think more about what traits make us valuable and interesting and not the immutable traits that simply describe 'what' we are. What we are is not as interesting as WHO we are!

RaphSieg007 ya but by making the word transgender a label that literally anyone can use you’re taking away the meaning of the word from people that actually need it to describe a very painful medical condition they’re going through. Imagine someone doing this with any other medical condition/mental illness. Can I just identify as having OCD tomorrow? No cause it would make me look like an asshole and it makes the term meaningless. You guys already have tons of labels to describe all this shit, AND a fucking umbrella term to encompass all of them. Why in the fuck do they need to steal yet another “umbrella” term that’s an actual medical diagnosis? When people say that non-binary and transgender aren’t one in the same they’re not saying it to be mean and hurt your feelings, they say it because it actually hurts the trans community by conflating the two and makes it harder for people to understand a medical condition that is already wildly misunderstood.
@victoriamaakulmamerijarvi9036
@victoriamaakulmamerijarvi9036 6 лет назад
J B Nonbinary folks are not taking a label that doesn't match with them, because it actually does match with them. Also they're not taking any word because you can't own words that are commonly used. And umberella terms are something we use in our everyday lives for example mental health issue is an umberella term and underneath it is for example OCD. Someone who is depressed can use both the words depression and mental health issue and by doing so they're not saying that they also have OCD because that's not how language works. If I'm a cat owner, I can also say that I'm a pet owner and that doesn't mean that I'm saying that I have a dog. Transgender means that the gender you were assigned at birth doesn't match with your actual gender and nonbinary people fit in that description. P.S. At least in where I live, being nonbinary is also a diagnosis.

All this video did was tell me, Non binary is about how you feel. And though it's Valid. I still don't think it should be umbrellad with trans.

"Trans" is clearly being used as an umbrella term, though a lot of people not familiar with the "LGBTQ community" - whatever that's supposed to be, seeing as "we" aren't all immediately associated with one another - see it as being purely synonymous with "transgender". Are _you_ transgender? Not by definition, according to your own experiences. Are you "trans"? Well, yes, _if_ we go with the premise of it being an umbrella term. This feels like splitting hairs, and frankly I'm not inclined to agree with that definition. Maybe there should be a word that encompasses non-cis gender identities, but then again I thought that English did pretty well with "transgender" and "non-binary". But hey, I'm sure this isn't just an attempt to co-opt a label so you can refer to a more well-known concept and get recognition from a wider audience.

I sat within life's restaurant And watched you eat word salad. I listened as the hushed hubbub became a burbling ballad. Transform, transition, transcend, transcribe Transfer, transect, divide. Began, became, bemoaned then blamed Bemused, becalmed, abide. I was a boy and then a man Then cis became my label But cis itself masculinised So I just left the table. Say what you are and I'll comply But dare project a fable And I'll reject your unboxed box And breath while I'm still able. Your freedom should apply to all And theirs in turn to you But turn a word into unword And soon I'll do it too. The world is not as neat and clean As lines you found at birth But neither will it fit your dreams If you draw lines in earth. Be all that you can be But do not be what you decried If you decide what others be Then, brother, you have lied.

Yes! Generally I think everybody who does not identify as the gender they where assigned at birth is trans but I also know people who fall under this category (non-binary or not) and do not identify with the label trans and that is totally fine:)

I do not agree with many things you have said on this channel or in this video, however, I appreciate the opportunity to understand where you are coming from with you views. I was glad you see you define the word trans before you insisted non-binary was trans because I could now understand how you came to that conclusion. I believe your thoughts were well explained and you have a very good understanding of yourself and who you are and that is very commendable. Thank you for the videos, I hope you have a nice day.

You're very right saying that langugae is a tool. But you have to consider that people have to be able to understand what you're saying. The listener is the king, if he doesn't understand you you have to choose other words. How you feel can never be the one and only criterion for the applicability of a word. We are speaking in metaphors and they have to make sense, otherwise people will misunderstand you.

You say people have to right to label their experience and use words that make sense to them. It is possible that they do not understand the words, which do have definitions. Transgender has a specific definition that’s requires dysphoria. If you are okay with having breasts and vagina, you do not have dysphoria and are not trans.

To me, being non-binary means saying yes to all the things that make me who I am. Society sees some of those things as more feminine or masculine and that perception shifts among people with the passing of time.

Good Video. But to need more, to describe, what it is, and what are the differences. Here is my definition: Nonbinary: Don´t want to use a binary gender role. (See also: Genderqueer or genderfluid.) Trans: Wants to use the opposite gender role.

I agree that language is a tool and that we have the right to use the words that best suit our experiences and feelings. However, being trans is not something you choose (you can choose to identify with that word but that doesn't make you trans), it's a medical condition which you are born with and need to be diagnosed with if you want to be sure if you are trans or not. And just because a word seem to fit how you are feeling doesn't mean that you have a medical condition (ex. I'm feeling depressed and depression seems to fit me so I'm depressed is wrong bc depression is a mental illness that needs to be diagnosed). Use whatever word you want to describe yourself, but if you do not have any sign of being transgender (hint: the only requirement is having any type of dysphoria) chances are you're just probably a gender non-conforming cis person. Let's see how many people disagree with me. PS. I'm not claiming this person is not trans I just think it's very dangerous to treat being trans so lightly because there are enough young people confused about gender and many people taking wrong decisions bc they think they're trans.
