For podcasting I recommend using a dynamic microphone as it will reject a lot of room sound and background noise. The most important part is to make sure you are as close as you can comfortably be. Using a pop filter can help reduce sibilance and plosives as well.

They hated Jesus for speaking the truth! I am very biased but I agree with you. You just can’t beat the Zuiko lenses, especially when you factor in the price. The first camera I ever repaired was my Olympus XA2 and I only fixed it because prices were getting insane and I just couldn’t part with it. The XA2 is my go-to P&S and i’ working on fixing up an XA. A kind stranger just sold me an OM-1 for $1 because they didn’t want to contribute to the insane price hikes going with film cameras and I feel so blessed. I could go on about Olympus cameras all day. 😂 My love for film grew 10X using Olympus cameras. Olympus cameras are well made, pretty compact, and, also very stylish in my opinion. Craftsmanship is excellent and they’re such a wide variety of OM lenses to choose from but even your standard 50mm f1.8 is is great! Ignore the haters, it’s just preference at the end of the day 😂 let them stay mad lol

Interesting to see someone still doing this. From 1980 to 2008 I was a photographer in the USAF. For me anyway, we used Nikons because: that is what was issued to us; they take a beating; you can put a lot of film through them without mechanical failure. For me, they always worked. Even then, you had two camera bodies on you so if one did fail, you could still do an assignment. With that said, I have used the Olympus OM-1n, 24mm, 50mm, 135mm, 200mm extensively. They were a heck of a lot lighter. THAT counts for a lot as if you are shooting often, you get fatigued. 2x OMs around the neck and if doing close in work, one was with a 50mm the other a 24mm. Usually photographing a lot of uncontrolled events. The ergonomics of the OM-1 (I have not shot the OM-10 so I can't speak on that), make it much more useful than a lot of other cameras. You are on to something with the lenses, at least the ones I have used. I thought the images (for me Kodachrome and Ektachrome) are of really good contrast. And as for reliability. I did not have one fail on me, which for me negates the alleged advantage of the Nikon since you can buy a lot more Olympus equipment for the dollar. And if you do damage an OM-1 or whatever, it is cheap to replace. I still have an OM-1 and a 50mm on the shelf. I only shoot digital now, so whatever. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work.

I have had no issues with my Olympus cameras either despite what I’ve heard from people about them failing. I do like Nikon and own many Nikon cameras but my OM10 is just what I find myself always reaching for. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻🙋🏻‍♀️📸

I bought my OM-2 in 1993 and was more than impressed by Zuiko lenses. Yoshihisa Maitani said the lens is the soul of the camera and while he was at Olympus he made sure the lenses produced the most beautiful immages.

Ho iniziato a fotografare nel 1985 con una Olympus Om4 e lo Zuiko 50mm f/3,5 macro. Nel tempo ho acquistato il 18mm, il 24mm f:2, il 35mm f:2, il 55mm f:1,2, il 90 mm f:2 macro ed il 180mm f:2,8 con il moltiplicatore 1,4x. Nel reportage (matrimoni, teatro... ) ero a mio agio e per la compattezza del sistema ed anche la discrezione duranto lo scatto, poco rumoroso. Nel tempo ho acquistato la Om4ti e Om3 per avere (come con la 0m4) una precisione nellla esposizione con le diapositive insuperabile grazie alla misurazione multi spot. Con il digitale sono rimasto in casa Olympus nel sistema 4/3 e poi micro 4/3. Ancora oggi uso una reflex E-5 Oly professionale (l'ultima della serie) anche con i vecchi Zuiko Om che ho conservato, mentre altri li ho venduti. Infine con la Panasonic G9 e l'adattatore Metabones 0,64x... di fatto quasi ripristino angolo e profondità di campo delle ottiche Zuiko Om sul micro 4/3. Ad esempio lo Zuiko 55mm diventa un 35mm f:0,8 !!!! Posso fotografare con pochissima luce ambiente. ;) la pellicola non la uso dal 2004... e va bene così: la vita è bellissima.

I have an Olympus Om-1 with the 50mm 1.8 lens and I love it. ZUIKO lenses are definitely special, and I can't wait to try more of their ZUIKO lens line up.

The Olympus OM-1 the 50mm f1.8 was my first serious camera - bought back in the 70s from one of the big discount camera shops in Shinjuku when I was studying in Tokyo. I chose it over the Nikon FM because it just felt better in my hand. I loved that kit even with a buggy light meter for it's size that let me carry it everywhere. It was stolen in the 80s and a friend gave me a Canon to replace it, but I still miss that first OM1.

I have the very rare and sought-after Zuiko 35mm f/2 and along with my 28mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.8 are my three very favourite lenses, along with my beautiful all-black OM-2n body. I’ve shot OM’s all my life and will never shoot anything else

The 28mm f2.8 is second to none! I’ve been using it on my OM-4 and I’m obsessed. It’s so small and perfect for street photography. Will be testing it on my OM-1 soon.

vouch for the 28mm!! i like it for video too, adapted to my sony. i have a 50 1.4 but unfortunately have a good amount of fungus :/. i rarely shoot 50 but a part of me still yearns for a clean copy

Nice to see that you are testing the camera that I bought in 1982 and it was my first camera. I only got to know how good this cameras was , as I was progressing in my photography and getting to the point where I went from Nikon over canon eos to Leica. Now you won’t believe it, I still have those zuiko lenses and I use them on my Leica too. So cheers from Germany and happy shooting 😊

I started shooting with an Olympus OM-1 in 1978. It was the third camera I'd tried. I'm still shooting on OM-1 (and OM-2) today. It was their compactness, design and lenses that got me hooked. My two go-to lenses were 24mm f/2.8 and the 50mm f/1.8, and still are, even though I now have a full range of Zuiko glass up to a 190mm f/2.8. I travelled all over Australia and Asia with them. Those lenses and Kodachrome produced fantastic images. When I went digital, I stuck with Olympus for a while because of the Zuiko glass, but then had a 10 year affair with Canon, but I saw the error of my ways and have gone back to Olympus for digital, and the Zuiko lenses are still as stunning as ever, and even sharper. Even though the Olympus camera division no longer exists, the legacy of Maitani lives on.

Great video. I agree about the quality of Zuiko lenses. My dad was a professional photographer, a photojournalist, and a photography professor. When he passed away, I inherited his gear: Olympus OM2S & a plethora of amazing glass. I’ve been shooting with it since 1992 when I took my first darkroom class and started working at a camera store. I’ve seen many types of cameras, lenses, & gear over the years but I am still as in love with my Olympus gear as I was 30 years ago. I bought Nikon film & later digital gear to get auto focus, etc. I got an amazing deal because of where I worked. I have a collection of gear after working in the industry for 19 years, but my Olympus is definitely my fave gear. I witnessed the very beginning of digital photography and later saw film cameras practically being thrown away. People literally donated large amounts of cameras and lenses to my store because they didn’t know what to do with it. It makes me happy to watch your videos. I thought the world killed film and I’m glad that it isn’t dead. Thanks for sharing your content. -Merry in Virginia, US

Hi Lucy, this is the first time the algorithm has been kind enough to introduce me to your channel. Thanks for sharing your experience with Olympus gear. I've had an Olympus M1 for over 50 years. My grandad, who was an avid photographer, gave it to me for my 7th birthday after he picked it up during a business trip to Japan. Dad was furious with him for such a lavish gift, but he got over it. The OM series is what the M series became after Leica objected to Olympus' use of the 'M' moniker. I use only an early M-System Zuiko 50mm F1.4 lens, which interestingly is radioactive due to the use of thorium in the glass. I love the combination and have taken it all over the world with me, and it's never let me down.

The 50mm f/1.2 is legendary. Perhaps my favourite lens - wide open it has a magic (thanks in part to its spherical aberration) and then from f/2 upwards it's bitingly sharp. All that in package about the same size as 50 1.8s from other manufacturers.

I love my Zuiko 50mm f1.8, Zuiko 135mm f3.5, Zuiko 135mm f2.8 and finally the Zuiko 200mm f4. Super sharp lenses with amazing contrast and character.

Amazing : you reminded me why I switched to MFT all those years ago and I’m not tempted away . I have a great portrait lens which I don’t use very much and a great walk about option glued to the body . The kit zoom is good , but gets little use these days . For wide angle shots then my phone covers that pretty well . In fact, I have come to rely more on my phone because it is with most of the time , but the camera is another experience entirely and one I get most pleasure from.

Back in the mid 1980s, I got an Olympus OMG from a pawn shop in Fullerton California. It is by far my favorite camera and the Zuiko lenses that I got for it have never failed to provide quality photographs.

The OM1n is still one of my favourite 35mm film cameras, and yes, I have more than one. The prime glass is excellent and I feel much overlooked. I would give the zoom lenss a bit of a body swerve though, but then all zoom glass from that time was not as good as the modern equivalent, but the Zuiko primes, even the slower glass just can't be beaten.

I used to shoot with an OM30 and some of their lenses. Sadly I no longer still have the kit. I sold it off when I went digital in the early 2000's, but I kept my Canon EOS30 camera that I bought to replace the OM30. The OM30 required a lot of LR44 batteries! (five of them!) The shutter used magnets to control the speed of the shutter, I had them changed on mine after about 5 years. The OM30 was compact and lightweight. Thanks for the video, spoiled today with one from you and OMTC!

I got my first OM10 in 1991 and I've still got it upstairs with a spare, and two Zuiko 50mm f/1.8 lenses, among others. I've not used it since going digital, but I need to put Ektachrome back through it, and possibly Ektar. The images were quite wonderful.

New subscriber to your channel. Love the content! Especially this vlog because the Olympus 35mm slr's are near and dear to me. The OM-2N was my first camera and it gifted to me by my late father who introduced me to photography when I was 17 yrs. Almost 40 years later, my OM-1 and OM-2 are still my fav film cameras. There is just something about the character of zuiko glass that you can't replicate with any other film camera imo. Cheers!

I recently picked up an Olympus M-1 body with M-System Auto-S 50mm f1.8 lens. As readers may be aware, the ‘O’ was added following a complaint by Leica about the use of M-1. I find the history of cameras fascinating.

First off, great video. I have been shooting vintage Leitz and OM lenses for a number of years on various bodies and IMO the OM lenses are about 90% of what the Leitz stuff is at about 20% of the cost. It's VERY good glass. Plus the little "Pen" and "35" range of pocketable cameras are really awesome. The 35RD is in my sites as my next Olympus purchase.

If you want a lightweight camera get your self a Pentax ME or any of the Pentax m series film camera, which are lighter and smaller than the Olympus om-1 and other OM cameras.

I watched this as I was searching for videos on Zuiko lenses, my first ever camera was the Olympus OM10 (nice to see you have the manual adaptor!) with Zuiko 50mm, I currently shoot with a Fuji X-T2 and want to try some vintage glass and figured the Zuiko would be perfect, before even typing this reply I've already ordered one and a mount adaptor, hearing you talk so lovingly about my first ever set up made me so nostalgic... that I can see me also getting an OM10 body in the next few days too!

Love Zuiko lenses and Oly cameras. Pentax and Minolta also render nicely… not as consistently as Zuiko. I’d put their primes on par with any Leica… crazy but true.

I also like Zuiko glass and I have quite the collection now. the 85/2 is great for portraiture and the 40/2 pancake is also a great lens! That 50/1.4 lens works great with my speedboosted Micro 4/3 cameras it makes it a 71/1.0 lens after crop and boosting - I was initially shooting with Micro 4/3, then got a speedbooster for OM and then started to pickup the om lenses to match my Pen/OM-D. This lead me into trying out film and I've been shooting film ever since, which the occasional dip back into digital.

I’m so pleased I have just found you on RU-vid. I have 4 Leica camera’s and a collection of Olympus OM film camera’s too. I can 100% confirm that the Zuiko lenses have a beautiful character and believe this or not I have three variations of the 50mm f1.4 lens. If you haven’t already maybe just step up to the 85mm f2 as it’s qualities are similar to you 50mm f1.8 and I’m sure you will love it ❤ As for Leica I can say that technically and image quality and build is better but you can pay up to twenty times more for a similar experience. It’s an old saying but it is definitely down to the photographer and not the equipment in long cases. Thank you for posting this as it’s been a joy to see a younger generation enjoying these classic cameras 🙏

I had a Leica M3, fully rebuilt by a in Leitz trained tech, for a couple years and never liked it as much as maybe I should have. The thing I HATED about it was loading the darn thing. The way I shoot, having a $1500 piece of vintage jewelry around my neck always made me nervous, that and it's quite heavy considering its size. I had already been shooting 6x6 for a while anyway, so I was used to the quality of the bigger negs. I have a crazy DDR Pentacon 6 which I adore - with a Ukrainian 65 mm and a waist level finder it's not that much heavier than an M3, and the photos are wonderful. What's funny, though, is I have Olympus OM's too, and I traveled with them and love them. It's a little crazy how I never fell in love with the magnificent, expensive M3 but gush over pawn shop OM1's and a Polish eBay Pentacon...

I started getting into photography 2 years ago. Today my mom gave me my grandpas old camera. An OM10 with the 50mm. I cleaned the lens and ordered an adapter and cant wait to try it out

It's good to see, that you found a lens type and brand, that matter to you 🙂 You really did nail so many shots with those Zuiko 50mm lenses. Having no experience with Zuiko lenses myself, I can't say if you're right or not. But, considering how many great lenses from many different brands I have myself, in my opinion it is entirely a matter of personal preference. I'm partial to Voigtländer myself. I also have this vintage 90mm Leica M-mount lens, that has build quality second to none in my opinion. But, I also get great results with my Nikon (AF), Canon (FD and EF), Minolta, Konica, Sigma, Sony, Fujica and Pentax glass. I have more f/1.4 (45-55mm) lenses, than I care to admit, because they just work for me. I will say, that many lens makers produce high precession lenses for things like scientific purposes - not only Olympus. Very cool tee btw.

I do love using the pro and non-pro M.Zuiko glass for Olympus cameras that use the MFT mount, and the F.Zuiko 38mm f/1.8 for the Pen-F(T) lineup is a good addition to my lens collection. Amazing image quality and interesting bokeh. Looks great on the digital Pen-F, which looks more like an old Leica than any film-era Pen-F, funny enough.

I love the Olympus lenses a lot! My first camera was the Olympus 35 RC, and I really enjoyed the lens on that. My grandparents just wanted to find a camera they could give me that they wouldn't worry about if I lost or broke it. I feel like a lot of the newer Olympus Zuiko lenses have a lot of same feel as a lot of my older ones do. I also shoot digital on Micro 4/3 and I have some of their modern Zuiko lenses, and I really like how those look too

I am a HUHGE fan of Olympus and Zuiko!!! My first 35mm SLR was an Olympus OM1 back in the 70s, it still works even though the meter doesn't I just love every lens I have ever used and dig everything from their half frame cameras through their pre-ish and their point and shoots!!!

The original OM1 was actually the M1, and was Olympus’s attempt at making a camera in line with the Leica system. Leica complained about the name, so the OM1 was born. If you put the OM1 and an M3 back to back, they’re practically the same size. The OM1 has advantage of being usable without batteries too, they’re just used for the light meter.

Also picked up a 50mm f1.4 with rim of lens separation at multiple levels, but it still works great. My favorite lens is the 100mm f2.8 (my preferred focal length) and the amazingly light 200mm f4, light enough to easily shoot hand-held. The 36-70mm f3.6 zoom is amazing as well. Hi Lucy. You are the Olympus OM-10 girl. Very nice shots by the way. I started with the same combo back in 1979. 1980 followed the OM 2-N and later a used OM-1N. I have still all this Cameras. Olympus OM is known for its small and light designs. Olympus in this department beats all other Companies in the 70s and 80s. Designer Yoshihisa Maitani was a genius. My recommendations: 21mm f3,5 24mm f2.8 28mm f2 35mm f2.8 85mm f2 100mm f2.8 135mm f 2,8 If someone could afford more. This are the expansive and rare power lenses: 18mm f3,5 50mm f2 Makro 90mm f2 Makro 100mm f2

Great video! I've got an OM-1n and the 28mm f2.8. I didn't love that focal length until I got that lens and it's my favorite now - it's got such a character, even equivalent focal lengths in my digicam don't match it. I also recommend the 50mm f3.5 macro for portraits and closeup photos.

In the initial moments of video you showed an Oly Trip 35 (and again later). I loved using it with Tri-X and still have a black one. Took some great stuff using it on a snowmobile trip in Alaska a few years back. The rendering of a raging snowstorm was awesome, snow falling at 45 degree angle with coastal cliffs fading into the distance and abandoned beached fishing boat in foreground. Grainy and stark. Still have a working XA also! But any camera you have is the 'best one' compared to the one you don't carry with you.

Nice to see you made a good point about the old pro f1.4 lenses. They were never really made to be shot wide open, but they did make the viewfinder a tad brighter that a 1.8 lens. And trying to get bokeh with a maximum shutter speed on 1000s is only possible on a very overcast day or indoors under low light.

As someone who has Leica R and M glass (on film and digital), as well as a long-time (my first camera in HS) OM user, I can tell you that Zuiko glass can hold its own against Leica glass optically and artistically. It has its own character, but so does a Summicron. Now, my modern Leica M glass is technically better at CA, distortion, etc. but I like the rendering of my Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 better than my Summicron or the Summilux. If you shoot film, it's pretty simple...if you LOVE a rangefinder and like to be light and have superb quality, shoot Leica glass (or a properly calibrated TT Artisan) and either a Konica Hexar RF, Bessa or Leica...and spend the $$ on it. If you like an SLR or don't care, the Olympus OM system and glass will hold its own against the Leica...no, the level of fit and finish and dampening etc. isn't quite there on the Olympus, and dang that shutter slap, but My OM4 and Zuiko glass holds it's own against my Leica R5...the R5 is just a bit more "refined". Zuiko glass can't be beat on the SLR side for size, style (sorry Pentax you ugly), weight, ergonomics and quality. The only downside is that with age, the OM bodies aren't as reliable as others IMO. I'm on my 4th OM4...ugh. The hidden gem might be the OM-G (OM-20)...they have been rock solid for me and don't eat batteries...and they have a very nice add on grip. And look for a "made in japan" (lowercase) 50mm f/1.8...it will knock your socks off at 1.8 even compared to the f/1.4.

My son likes his Om10 with the 1.8 50mm lens. I have a Ricoh 50mm f2 lens on a Petri GX1 K mount camera. Ricoh lenses are awesome. I have a 2005 8.1 megapixel Ricoh GR digital camera with a 28mm equivalent f2. 4 lens. Awesome results especially in black and white My favourite camera is my old Pentax Spotmatic with its M42 Super Takumar 55mm 1.8 lens

I use my zuiko 50mm f2 macro for *everything*, it’s the perfect walkabout lens! Collectors have slightly ruined things for some of the rarer lenses tho, I’d looove an 85mm / 90mm or 100mm f2 but they’re gold dust 🥲

I got an OM-G/OM-20 in high school. I eventually switched to digital, but at one point I acquired a couple Zuiko primes intending to get back into B&W film (never happened). I got my first mirrorless a couple of years ago, and I'm now experimenting with the Zuiko primes on it. Just picked up a 50mm f/1.4. I can't give you a technical or artistic reason, but I like the experience of using the vintage primes on my modern mirrorless. I like the feel of lens as I manually adjust the focus, and it works well with the focus peaking feature of the mirrorless display.

The 50mm f1.4 that came on my OM-1 is still my favorite lens ever, of all time. It’s sharp wide open, the blur is creamy, it swirls a little, and when you stop it down to around f4, the sharpness and lens character is just godly. Not to mention the focusing on my copy is really smooth, I never feel the need I need to get it oiled up. I plan on getting the 200mm f4 since I’m looking for an affordable telephoto option for the camera and that seems pretty damn great, and the 55mm f1.2 for the extreme low light situations AND the extra blur that comes with it for portraits (I’d imagine the 50mm f1.2 is better since it’s newer, but it’s way pricier and among the Zuiko lenses that still has a lot of value, including other rare offerings such as the 35mm f2 which I’d love to get, or the 40mm f2 pancake which would definitely be godtier in terms of a compact SLR system)

My dad gave me his old OM-10 with a 50mm f1.8. I have really enjoyed shooting with it. I also got recently a 50mm f1.4. I love the lenses! I even started adapting the leases to my Sony a7Riii.

All of these different brands of cameras and lenses are capable of creating beautiful images and so many of them are such bargains these days, that one should never think a low budget will prevent a person from taking fantastic photographs.

I started picking up M42 lenses for my mirrorless digi cam. After a while, I came to the realization you can shoot those lenses on all sorts of great film cameras. There are many options, including half-frame cameras, tiny minimalistic cameras, and full-featured cameras. My favorites are Exa 1B which is very small and Zeiss Icarex although Pentax made tons of bodies and the Mamiya 1000DTL is cheap and underappreciated.

Exa 1b fan here! What I like about the M42 lenses is that they have the manual stop down when you adapt them to mirrorless digitals. The OM glass too, but you have to modify the adapter for the Zuikos to do that

Good luck not lighting all your money on fire now 💸 Olympus m43 is my workhorse digital system system. Their lenses are still awesome for the *look* even if the smaller sensor isn't as amazing as larger formats. Since Olympus never made AF film SLRs, and I prefer autofocus, I use Nikon AF-D lenses with optical designs from the 70s-90s for the vintage-ish glass look.

I have the Olympus 0m2n with a couple of lenses. The selling point for me was/is the 'off the film metering' which makes it more accurate. The lightness is also a bonus, especially compared to my Nikon F2AS with a 55mm f1.2 lens which is ridiculously heavy.

I can’t speak to the old film Zuiko glass but I do have Olympus Micro 4/3rd cameras and the Zuiko glass for those are some the sharpest, clearest best color rendering lenses I own and that includes the lenses for my Hasselblad 500C. My favorite walk around setup is my Olympus PenF digital with the 12-40mm f2.8 lens. I have been looking into either a film PenF or a half frame Olympus. Maybe I need to look a little harder

My Olympus 35RC is one of my favorite cameras. I often go between that and a late 50's Leica M2 with a 35mm Summilux. For those familiar with his work, William Eggleston shot a lot of The Democratic Forest with a 35RC.

my favourite OM Zuiko glass list includes the 28 F3.5, 35 F2 (more of character lens), the 50 F1.8 MC, and the 100 F2.8. The OM Zuiko lenses render both black and colour beautifully and dampened just right for focusing.

For portraits, they have an amazing 100mm lens. I also have a 50mm f/1.2 which I use constantly and an older 55mm f/1.2 "radioactive" lens.

Suggest you try lenses on either OM1 or 2. These are more premium bodies and while heavier than the OM10 , which is more plastic construction. I had a 50, 75-150, & 300 ,you certainly noticed that on the camera but all gave me amazing results. Enjoy this amazing camera and lenses.

Nice video! I sort of happened onto Olympus somehow, and got hooked on its aesthetic, size, and ease of use. I find the on/off lever a bit flimsy, though it hasn't failed me on both my OM2n and OM2sp. The Leica comparison is apt, since the size of the bodies and lenses are very similar to Olympus. I have an M2, which doesn't have a light meter, which I find frustrating. I recently took both the OM2sp and the M2 to a street costume party, and shot a roll on each. Metering externally on the Leica slowed me down, but on the other hand focusing with a rangefinder is much easier than the ground glass/split circle on an SLR. So I recently acquired and M5, which is the cheapest Leica that does have a lightmeter, and I"m curious to see how that will pan out, but I haven't used it yet. I also inherited a Nikon F2, which is big, bulky and cumbersome. I take it out for a spin once in a while, but it's not the one I reach for naturally. To summarize: My best landscape shots, relying on resolving power, sharpness and color were taken with the Leica, but that might be simply because that was what I had at hand. So for me, the jury is still out, but the addiction is still going strong 🙂.

Old lenses from all the manufacturers have some special sauce in various lenses. I own/use/love the Pentax MX and ME Super with their small Pentax-M lenses that are really stella in their effects. If you don't already Lux, expand your Pentax cameras into the MX/ME/LX line and the Pentax-M lenses! My wife and I will often go out with her mum (a retired photojournalist amongst other tings) with Nikon Z6 with Pentax K mount adapter and a pair of MX & ME Super bodies with a selection of Pentax -M lenses that we can swap amongst ourselves. I often use the Pentax -M SMC 28mm 3.5 on my digital body for photos in forests due to the amazing way it renders greens. The Rodenstock Heligon 50mm for Kodak Retinas is superb and gives nothing away to my Leica Summicron 50mm f2 collapsible. The reality is that there are so many old lenses out there that really speak to people on another level, and how fortunate are we that we get to use them on film and if you like mounted on digital.

What a terrific video! Although my favorite standard lens is a Topcor 5.8cm f1.4, I do prefer the Zuiko *range* of lenses, especially my current favorite - the 35-70mm f3.6 zoom. It could very well be the best zoom lens for 35mm of this era. I have an OM4 and it's a delight to use. I love the Topcon RE Super that the Topcor lens is for. It's a remarkable system, very well-built but HEAVY! The OM system is a delight - light-weight and agile! Thank you for posting this!

I kind of have a similar affection but for Pentax lenses, especially the early Pentax primes like the Takumar's. I've only heard good things about the Zuiko glass and I honestly don't see the Leica glass being much or any better than Pentax or Zuiko glass, especially for the price. Also Pentax did make the Pentax MX and ME series of cameras that are comparable in size to the OM's in case anyone is looking for a compact camera and they have k mount/m42 lenses.

I had the OM1n with that 50mm lens back in the 1980s. You'll see how incredibly sharp it is if you use a tripod and strong fill-flash on a subject. Otherwise the camera had a fair bit of shuttershock and so the images lacked anything like that bite in ambient light. Olympus kit looked so pretty.

I just came across your video. I found the video interesting. I tried using a few vintage lens on my mirrorless cameras. I have two zoom lens made by Olympus 35-70mm and a18-28mm. Both did not interest me. I like the old Asahi Pentax M-42 mount lens. They are all prime lens! I guess I should try a Olympus Zuiko prime lens. I shot film years back still have my Canon. I been liking the mirrorsless cameras and editing process. After watching your video I need to get the old lens back out and start using them again. Look forward to your next videos.

I'm not big on lenses either, but great to hear your thoughts on this, Lucy! I've heard Zuiko means "light of the gods," but I'm not sure if it's true. One thing I particularly like is something I read about the differences between the consumer, semi-pro and pro lenses. Unlike other brands that would use cheaper materials and glass for the 50mm 1.8 than the 1.4 and 1.2, the designer Yoshihisa Maitani insisted the quality should be the same across the board, so the few extra stops of light on the pricier lenses is the only difference between them. Very democratic, I think! I need to get out and take some more pictures. My pace has slowed down quite a bit since I started camera scanning at home, unfortunately.

They are wonderful lenses, but there are some differences. The consumer grade 50mm f1.8 only has 6 aperture blades, while the pricier 50mm f1.4 has an 8-blade aperture for smoother bokeh. Lens coatings is another area that manufacturers cut cost, single vs multi coated. In that era it was a pretty similar cost cutting strategy across brands. Nikkors, Canon FD, Minolta, Zeiss, Pentax various grades for optics (consumer vs pro). What I love about the Zuiko glass is that, unlike those beautiful Nikkor AI lenses I’ve had my eye on, Olympus lenses remain affordable on the used market. For now. ;)

Get a Pentacon 6 and a 65mm MIR lens. Put the WLF on it and shoot it like a TLR. Surprisingly light, incredibly sharp (I suppose there may be some variation lens to lens). The Soviet barrels and mechanics leave something to be desired, but this combo is brilliant for street photography. The camera is not even terribly loud either. I hardly shot any 35mm after using the Pentacon.

Haven’t tried a Zuiko lens myself but I’ve seen a few videos and the color rendition does seem really nice, makes me want to grab a couple. The closest I have would be something like a Takumar 55mm 1.8. The Radioactive takumars especially, have really nice colors as well if you don’t mind being mildly irradiated in the course of using them :P
