I am white my husband is Zambian. Our children were all born in America but we have spent the last 7 years in Africa. It's amazing to me how much more emphasis is put on race in America than it is here. Our 15 yr old daughter just experienced the "choosing a race" form and said she filled in half the white circle and half the black.

I am a 66 year old white woman. My mother taught us as children, to treat everyone the way you want to be treated. My children were the taught the same way. My house was always full of my boys friends who were always outnumbered by their black friends. These boys always and still some call me, “Momma.” I am very proud of all my boys, black or white. We even had a young black man, who lived with us his senior year. There was never a time when the boys were not made welcome in our home. We have fed them for the four years of high school. We have cheered them on in all of their endeavors. I am still in contact with a few of them. I am proud of them as well as my own sons’. Kids need to be loved period.

I want to share a little story with you guys. My mother and aunt were both teachers. I was born and raised in a small town in KY. When I started 1st grade, my teacher was black. However, I had never been “taught” about different races. People were people to me. Mom was worried one of the other kids might say something to me about Ms. West, so after the first day of school, she was asking me all the usual questions. She said I told her I loved my teacher! I said her smile was so pretty and she was a little tan. “Through the eyes of a child here”. Ms. West was a beautiful black lady and she had a GOLD tooth. The cherry on top though...her house was painted a light pink. ☺️ I’m 56 now, and before we moved a few years ago they tore her house down. I stopped and my hubby got me a small piece of the pink siding from her house. 💕 I pray more people learn to see “through the loving eyes of a child”.

I’m really glad you touched on this, as a biracial child I wasn’t “black” enough for the African American kids, however because my skin is brown I wasn’t “white” enough for the Caucasian kids. Thus I’ve always been a loner, didn’t really fit in, stuck by myself didn’t make friends. Not too mention being bullied altogether just because my skin is different hair different than Caucasian kids. It was terrible I didn’t goto public high school because of the torment I endured in elementary and junior high. I now at 37, always check African American & Caucasian if they don’t offer both I don’t answer! The crazy part is defining ppl like they are a piece of paper there black no there white guess what if we all dig into our family history and tree we would find that everyone is mixed with different cultures and races. I’m not black I’m not white... I AM German, Norwegian and African American thank you!! And that’s what I say and answer when o hear assumptions or ignorant comments. There always will be racism unfortunately that sadness hurts my heart that Ignorant ppl can hate others based on the color of their skin, Sexual orientation, Religion etc. Sarah, Solo you are both right in how you teach your children that we are all Gods children and too love each other. Keep doing what your doing it shows in your amazing, beautiful, intelligent blessings (your children!) We all bleed the same blood we breathe the same air we are all more alike than we know and think. Be kind too others stop judging and start loving. This reminds me of an interview I watched several years ago with Morgan Freeman. He was asked how he would end racism and he said “you just stop talking about it!” The interviewer was kind of surprised by his answer and Morgan asked him if wanted a “Jewish History Month” and the interviewer said no. Morgan then asked if he wanted one and again, the interviewer said no....Morgan then said “I don’t want one either.” Then he said that the way you end racism was to stop referring to people as a black man or a white man....they’re just men. I love that and it makes so much sense. For me, I recognize, respect, and acknowledge our differences but people are people to me. I don’t judge anyone based on the color of their skin nor do I define people by the color of their skin. We are all human beings....children of God.

That would be great... if we lived in a society that wasn't rife with racial disparity. When we fail to see color, we fail to see the experience of people of color, and all of the structural inequalities that we currently have (and all of the oppression in the past that lead to our current global economic and political status). Check out "colorblind racism" to read more about why this can be such a problem. We need to know the past and the present situation regarding race in order to come together on a path of healing. Once we have done that, I am really hopeful in the future that race will no longer have to be an issue. But for now- we need to do some serious work, and some of that may be uncomfortable for many of us.

As an opinionated 10year he ask what exactly was an other then stated that he was not an other and left it blank. Today he is almost 35 and proudly serves in AF reserve and a County sheriff deputy who will be a daddy himself in a few short weeks. We chuckle about it now, but it definitely impacted him at the time. Today he is of the mind set that race/skin color doesn't define who you are as individual. Love your channel & your family. 🤗

@Baby Curls You're entitled to your opinion, but no one can change what has happened, and we ALL have to move forward if we want to make it better for all of mankind. I don't dismiss the fact that we all have things to work on, but it doesn't have to cripple us, or cause us to have hatred towards one another. As far as when it comes to homeless people you don't know me, and I actually do a lot to help not just homeless people on the streets, but children at Christmas. As far as when it comes to people of other ethnicities than myself I have zero issues with ANYONE, if you talk to me I'll talk to you. It has nothing to do with the amount of melanin in someone's skin. Now I know I can't say that's the case for every single person in the world, but please do not pretend to know me, or what I stand for. As far as the media goes I meant every word if what I said! They want to play us against each other by publicizing anything they can to create a divide in our country. I am for mending fences with everyone, but not at the cost of being called despicable things that are nowhere near true. We are a melting pot with all walks of life, and it's a beautiful thing, because no other country in the world is as diverse as us! I hope you have a great day, and remember we can't change the past, but we can work towards a better tomorrow!

@minkgin3370 3 года назад
@Baby Curls Please don’t lump us altogether as racists either, just because we look different. I treat all people the same until they do or say something to me that offends me, then I probably won’t give them a second chance to do it again. Talking to non-white people on public transport I find, especially the under 40’s, have a considerable chip on their shoulders against whites especially. WE cannot help what our forebears did, in the name of Christianity or any other religion. Many wrongs have been done the world over throughout history, including things done to the whites.....we were slaves to the Romans & Egyptians long before tobacco & cotton was grown by the black slaves. Money has always been made on the backs of slaves, but We must work towards a new world, not live in it’s dark history & that goes for all of us, no matter what colour or creed - as I said, we have all been slaves at sometime in history, it’s our own fault if it holds us back & we dwell on the past.

It is so great to hear others that have the same mindset! I am white and my husband is Hispanic (we also have 10 kids and homeschool Lol) and we have had the same box checking issues! We have also had some horrible things said to us over the years in regards to our children's race and our interracial marriage. And while it is hurtful, and in the beginning it made me angry at the unfair assumptions and hateful remarks, we have had so many opportunities to grow personally , to talk to our children about their identities, their uniqueness as God's creation, to teach them God's forgiveness, and to even try to have an understanding perspective towards people's response to us, because many that are saying these hurtful things were, sadly, raised to think that way, just like we are raising our children to think the way we are. I know people personally that have had to overcome racial thinking from being raised that way, and they have done so beautifully! ❤ So we have striven to teach our children that our character, our walk with God and obedience to His Word, and the way we love our neighbor as ourselves is what defines us, and Christ is who unites us all in salvation as brothers and sisters in Him through His death and resurrection! That this should be our greatest distinction 😊

We had been divorced for years and their relationship wasn't great at that point. We are white and the young man that she got pregnant by was 1/2 black and 1/2 white. I'm sorry to say that as she approaches her 8th birthday she has never met her own grandfather. He just doesn't know what light and love he could have in his life. This child is the light of my life. She is my reason for keeping on in this crazy messed up world. There have been days that I just didn't want to keep trudging on. She knows she is mixed and hopefully by the time she gets her learners permit she will be able to check black and white! Until I will keep praying that this world will improve and grow up.

My husband was raised in the US. In the South. In a white suburb of Atlanta. He has the same exact perspective as Solo. What you are hearing is a man who is confident in his identity in Christ - so much so that no other cultural or societal identity actually matters. It is the same with my husband.

@@ExNihiloArchitecture You and I can both agree that if anyone finds themselves truly a believer in Christ that they would not be racist because we know that we are all children of God, made in his image. The part thay so many people leave out is that there are people who are not Christians who SOME of them are racist. Our nation is not that far from the ending of segregation which my mother was school age and remembers. The point we should be focusing on is moving forward. As I can say we have but true societal takes time, person by person, generation by generation. Stop acting as though racism was not an issue and be the change.

I understand Belle’s confusion. I am biracial - Am Indian/Caucasian but growing up (I am old) I often got told to use the “colored” facilities. As a college student, I had to complete a standardized National teaching exam which asked for race. I put other and wrote in American. My mother was convinced my test would be thrown out. Instead, when I got my scores (I passed!), there was a comment - “About the race - good for you!” Ever since, I always mark Other! Love this post! Bravo for your parenting (and I have taught parenting for 30+ years)! Hugs, love, and prayers. First, I love both or your perspectives. The biggest take away for me was Solo's reiteration that we need to encourage our children and not put them in a box. I feel like, as a parent of little ones, I get very caught up in "the right choice". It's very difficult to let go of the control when I can foresee a negative outcome. I do recognize the need to let a situation play out (if safe) and this was a great reminder of that. Second, I'm so thankful to have grown up in a place where race/ethnicity/nationality differences were encouraged and praised! I've never checked one box on documents. I was married and in my twenties before anyone said "you can only pick one" or "you have to pick one of your names". It was at this time a co-worker and I got into it over whether or not I was a P.O.C. I had no clue what the acronym stood for. When I chose not to identify with the term because it didn't feel right for me, we had a "colorful exchange of views". It's unfortunate. I don't like things that divide us as people. At the end of the day, we're all people.

Thanks for taking the time and addressing this. I totally agree with you. I especially love what you said towards the beginning, something like: "Some people have strong opinions,.. And that's ok." :) We need that attitude a lot more and people need to take a "chill pill" (in the words of my teenage son). Different opinions are ok. We need to learn to discuss things again - in a good way, with manners and respect. "Mmh? You see that differently. Interesting. Tell me more." Then we can learn from another. So many people are personally offended lately when somebody doesn't agree with them. Instead it's so important to learn to see the other perspective. Like you said, Sarah, that is what you teach your kids at home. So important.

Finally got around to watching this one today. Our kids are not yet old enough to have to pick any boxes, but when I have had to do it for them I have been frustrated with the options as well. It sucks when people make assumptions about your family because of what you all look like. Many people, unless they know us personally, will often assume that we think a certain way about this issue and will sometimes get very pushy about how they think we should talk about this topic with our children. We also homeschool so I am very thankful for the unique opportunity we have to shape our children’s worldview on this subject. It’s nice to see that we aren’t the only Mixed-ethnicity family out there with this sort of view.

But I told my children (and still till this day) do not let others define you..you are who you are and be proud of it because in the long run it will pay off.
