As you were talking I recalled how there were so many heart-to-heart conversations that happened while hand-washing dishes, snapping beans, hoeing weeds, walking to the mail box or even visiting a neighbor to borrow a cup of sugar to put in a cake baked from scratch... Remember being cautioned not to run or stomp indoors so the cake wouldn't fall? I think that it's in the small daily moments of working that we gain so much! TIME is such a treasure and I think you are talking about INVESTING it in ways that our parents did.

I went on a mission trip in college to Uganda and there where we were of course all their cooking was over fire. Or taking 20 minutes to sort rice. Or the pig you heard squealing is the same pig they fed us that evening. Their other food came from their own crops. We washed dishes in 2 buckets. With water that got quickly cold. Bar Soap that was odd and then we put the dishes on a wreck in the sun. And the ministry I was with brought them toasters, griddles, crockpots, water kettle. It made me sad because I so appreciated watching the process them teaching me the real way to cook those things. And just the way they were on "African time" nothing was rushed or stressful.

I know this video is about how you've been eating lately and I think that's awesome! But I just want to also thank you. I reached out to your church online after watching Solo's sermon last Sunday. I just felt called back to God after I've strayed over the years. And while I live in Pennsylvania, your church has welcomed me with open arms. God Bless you all 🙏🙏

I totally agree with Sarah! I started scratch cooking a year or 2 ago and it takes a lot of time, but it teaches you so much! I have learned the true value of a home cooked meal and have experienced such joy in setting down a beautiful and lovingly made meal before my family. I don't think that we can truly value the Lord's provisions until we have walked through the whole process of making something. When we eat processed foods now or just food from a restaurant, we find ourselves sluggish and not feeling great!

I LOVE this! God has actually been speaking to me about the same thing! Enjoy the time to keep house, cook food, doing laundry, homeschooling, and living. I usually rush around to get it all done & I'm frustrated that I have so much to do, in order to mark it off the list. SO, I've been taking it all in and not rush around. I tell you, we have all (especially me) have calmed down and really enjoy each other and taking care of what God has given us! Plus, we are wanting to have chickens, a huge garden, and a cow too!!!! I never in my wildest dreams thought we'd be headed to that!

I like your perspective of recognizing there may be purpose in the tasks. I know I often enjoy the time of reflection and rumination when doing tasks that take time - mowing the yard, weeding, washing dishes, cooking. I have some health/disability issues, and my husband begs me not to do those things bc I pay a price being in pain for a couple days. But I genuinely enjoy the process of the tasks. And I sing, and pray, and think, and sort out my thoughts and feelings while I do them.

I especially enjoy bulk dried fruit, cherries, figs and dates. And chia seeds, quinoa, raw sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, brown rice, lentils, beans, chickpeas, almonds & other tree nuts. They store well, are nutritious, and easily adapt to recipes :)

So happy you shared the thought of valuable time. I have thought back to the past about how much time I spent with my daughter and whether it was valuable time or did I miss moments. I have one child and my husband and I worked full time. She’s now 23 and she herself has many memories of time spent with her, even if it was working in the yard or cooking or garage sale shopping and church. I guess i did not realize that daily living was actually very valuable to her. I’m so thankful that those were important moments as well, not missed moments. I still spend much time with her even if it’s just talking in my room or cooking a meal together. Everything we do with, for, and in front of our children are valuable.

Very thought provoking about the older generations. I did the same thing with my kids - convenience foods. Now that I am older and the kids are grown, I have found the concept of Being Present in my life. When I was raising kids, the kids kept me present in the Now for long periods of time, but when I wasn't present I was always thinking about the next thing, and the next thing, and the consequences of not doing this thing will impact that thing, etc. I am learning that being Present brings me many gifts, and the Present is a present from God. It is hard to retrain your brain, but that is what I feel like I am doing. Being present means just enjoying what I am doing when I am doing it and not thinking about the past or the future. It is where Joy lives. Since you are all pretty joyful, I would add that the gift of kids is a Present and they teach being Present and Joy. Our kids are our greatest teachers. You are very blessed.

I started gardening after learning of food allergies our family was dealing with and having to stand in the store and read all the labels to make sure we weren’t getting any of those ingredients that we had allergies to. We are on our 3rd year of gardening with the hopes of just feeding our family better after we too saw all the crazy stuff that was being put into food these days. We aren’t perfectly eating but have improved greatly over the years and intend to keep putting our hand to the plow and improve as we go. I had no idea I would love gardening and get excited about this time every year to start buying seeds and planning where to plant everything. We are still learning but it has been a wonderful “classroom” to be in.

I can agree with you on making your food at home. Depending on what you are making some may take much more time, but the reward is wonderful. I actually enjoy cooking. I used to laugh, when I worked at a bank, most of the people that I worked with opened a container, put in microwave and that was dinner for them. I was never that kind of cook. Not that I don’t use a microwave, but I don’t use many prepared items. My co workers were amazed that I actually cooked a full meal each nite. I had growing children at that time to feed. That was my motivation to cook real food.

Over the last few years I started batch cooking we have 2 freezers now and although daughter has moved out I still do batch cooking with certain things as I want to know n my food but alsos some days I cant even stand because of pain so we always have fresh cooked meals on hand hubby is a good cook to . but my daughter she has picked up alot of my habits cooking from scratch ct and her fiance loves her cooking. Just shows not only what wee teach out kids but them watching the things wee do they learn from and adapt to there own lifes when they grow up. I love the relationship I have with her shes not afraid to speak her mind or tell you she loves us I always made sure she knew her own mind and could make her own decisions when she was even little kid even thro her teenage years when out with friend she always made the right choice ie not to drink alcohol or get into trouble she wanted to always have fun but fo the right thing . Not much spare money but we ate well. We got our food fresh each day from the butcher, greengrocer(vegs) and bakery. The bread was basic bread and I believe in those days no foreign ingredients I now live in Ontario Canada.. I have volunteered all of my life, but I think it is now time for me. It's amazing how we ALL have almost run to keep up with what's going on in the world. I think you are doing what you need to do. I never actually slowed down until my children were older. I always valued the time spent with my children, gardening, cooking, cleaning, and playing. Some things have to be put on hold to get to do those things with kids. Kids will not last forever, the other things will. God gave them to us for a minute, and we need to treasure them. I want to die knowing I have done the best I could do with and for my family. It's our choice whether we get caught up in the fast pace. Most important, is when we recognize it and do something about it. I love your channel. Don't do anything differently. You put God first and family second, and that's the way it needs to be.

We've had good times, but not really enjoying life as it should be. I lost time with my children that I can't get back, and had no time for myself as I should have had,so I'm spending time enjoying all the little things, and making sure to take time to do God's will. Now I have been married to an American for 34 years and we have two adopted adult children from Brazil and two biological children. So your mixed family is such a blessing for me to watch. I am also a Christian and I love how all Christians all over the world are one big family in Jesus! Praise God! Thank you for sharing your lives with us! Asante sana!!! Mungu akubariki!!! P. S I just watched the mandazi video made by Solo’s mother and my mouth is watering😋

Good for you, that you're chancing your diet. So nice to see the whole family is on board. I had my doubts when Sarah mengend 1 ingredient meal 🤔 what does she mean. But now I know what you ment I always was amazed how much packaged food you bought, when I watched your grocery hauls. We never buy canned food or eat food out of a jar. Our kids don't even like it. We both we'rent raised like that. Our parents had a vegetable garden. Most of our fresh food and fruit we buy at the local market (once a week) or grocery store. Here in Holland is canned / jar food cheaper than fresh food, but if you eat by the season, it is affordable even whit a large family. I admire you for once a month grocery shopping. I tried (several times) , but it isn't working for us. So I go once a week. Just like you we have a budget for grocery's I love your honesty about so many things and the way you talk about it. My compliments beautiful

I am glad you faced this challenge. I honestly had no idea of this way of eating. We have tried it with you a few days a week. I was suprised learning all of the sneaky extras in our food that we personally eat.

I made bagels today, from scratch. It was easy and so satisfying! I think we (I) can do more of this.

We made a switch 5 years ago that we purchase things found in nature and limited what came in boxes and bottles in our home (except for spices). I made more from scratch recipes and I have grown to love the results. It amazes me how adaptable children can be and how they can teach you.

I hear what your saying about a new perspective on everyday life things. Lockdown has helped me realize that there’s something to be said about slowing down and enjoying the moment, even though it’s may be a mundane task

We garden on a small scale and take advantage of our local farmers markets and fruit stands, I can/ferment, sew/quilt, make butter, bake bread, hunt, fish, tote a gun and I may go buy one of those prairie dresses at Target 😂 lol. I was taught all of these skills from my parents and grandparents and I am so Thankful to have this knowledge. There may come a time when those skills will be valuable or a necessity for survival.

I hear what you are saying about the time it takes to live life and working on enjoying that process. I feel like we can appreciate that process more now because the pandemic has opened more time...and schedules are less haggard. Looking forward to seeing you in that Prarie dress😉

I love guessing and as you were talking about the surprise and homestead I came up with a butter churner(maker) or something to do with making own cheese ? Can't wait to see... I thought the same about taking time in making things as life around seems so busy.

Sarah, I understand exactly what you are saying, daily tasks have value sometimes the time spent have added benefits. My daughter (20) made bagels from scratch yesterday. It took a bit of time but they were amazing! More than that she did it by herself, she was glowing with self confidence and sense of accomplishment. She soooo needed that lately. Great video.
