I’m physically disabled. I’m unable to lift my right leg. A bicycle style pedal drive would be more likely to work for me. I can build my own drive if I really feel the need but I’d be much more likely to buy a trolling motor. If I ever lose the use of my legs completely, I still want to use my kayak. Open deck space is really more important for me because I frequently cramp up and have to stretch my legs out. Good video Aliex!

Alex I'm glad I made the choice I did. A feel free moken 10 1/2' my feel free side mounted transom, for the 2.5 Suzuki, and it's very stable, but went with a side mounted outrigger. I can enjoy boating and fishing. I saved in steps for the boat, then the motor. But your reviews and info, made me decide on my vessel. I only weigh 150 lbs, so I plenty of room, and at my weight she moves. Be safe, bro..

I have a hobie. Actually went back to paddle kayak with topwater 120 simply because its maintenance free and where I like to fish is prone to breaking drives LOL trees stumps etc. But if ocean fishing and deepwater fishing then I like pedal drives it's mainly just your budget

I agree! It is so much easier to fish with the pedal drives vs paddle. The only downside to pedal drives is that the accessory tracks that you will use most, are in bad places. I can't find anywhere to track mount a depth finder or extra rod holders in which my legs or knees don't hit what I have attached to the rail track while peddling. It may be kayak specific though...mine is a Native Propel 10 but it is fairly wide.

I got the Hoodoo Impulse 120 and I love it! Helps me get across the lake in no time. I only use it in lakes though, no use of it in small creeks or rivers where you have to turn a lot.

Just bought an Old Town, Topwater 106 PDL... Took it to the bay yesterday...It was windy AND wavy... the Kayak Handled it PERFECTLY. I LOVE my Kayak...it is worth EVERY PENNY!!!

First time out in my Predator PDL I landed a 100 lb tarpon. There were countless times in the hour long fight that would have ended badly in a lesser kayak. I also make 5 to 10 times more casts due to always having my hands free and not having to mess around with anchoring. Sometimes fishing is a numbers game. That said, I landed a ton of really nice fish with my paddle yak, you just need to be able to get out on the water. The pedals just open up new/more opportunities.

It is worth it! anything 12-13 foot with 33 width is a good start for beginners. Calgary Alberta Canada we rarely have any good paddle sport boats that has combination of three (rudder direction control, foot pedal and hand paddle) option to keep oneself busy and entertained in the waters. Originally I wanted to go on a solo trip and loved the boat style.

Bought my wife and I kayaks (PADDLE, not Pedal) with the intentions for leisurely excursions on the river with the pup and to get out and fish. I got a 12' and hers is a 10'. Fishing in any sort of current, or with any sort of wind (you will be blow around) is a flipping nightmare on a kayak. If you can't afford the pedal, make an obvious and clearly defined upgrade path into one and in the meantime get a detachable anchor system and anchor trolley as you'll need it...

I had a Hobie Tandon and I added a 45# thrust trolling motor. Mounted it on my starboard side. I could stay about4 hours out to sea. My peddles or trolling motor would let me go same speed! Yes well worth the cost

Id love a pedal drive for windy days on the lake. And not having to anchor so often. Along with being able to cast for often. The main thing I dont like about them is having the drive system sitting right in front of me though. Especially if you have the drive pulled up due to being in shallow water. I really like having a nice open deck in front of me instead of a bunch of clutter.

Sold! I love both river yaks and sea yaks but my shoulder issues keep me from going out much. I love to hike in mountain woods more than anything but since I’m in FL I need a different outlet. I love that this could be more keg intensive instead of arm intensive for me.

My fear is leaning and flipping the kayak. If I have hundreds of dollars of tackle and my phone I can not risk capsizing. Plus some of the rivers I fish can be dangerous.

I have a Jackson paddle kayak I’ve had for a couple years that works great it just gets a bit aggravating if the wind or current picks up. Thought about a pedal kayak but they are just so much heavier !!! It’s so easy for me to throw mine in my truck and get in any little pond I just drag it in the grass. These things weigh like 150 lb

I believe most people transport the drive and the kayak separately so then the kayak by itself would be the same weight as a non-pedal kayak. Then I’ve seen where they put the kayak in the water and then put the drive inside the kayak. I am thinking about getting an old town PDL 120 sportsman but the cost might be the prohibitive factor for me as the pedal drive alone is $1000.

Please DON'T CHEAP OUT ON ROOF RACK accessories, get the best you can and follow the instructions, make sure they handle the weight of the boat, don't over tighten the straps, follow the instructions

Fishing; I think it gives you the opportunity to catch more fish. With the wind blowing and the current pushing you, all you have to do is adjust the rudder and keep the same desired angle to work the bank while casting. If your working against the wind and current then your pedaling and adjusting the rudder as you work the bank casting. Good video Aliex. I'm adding another yak to the fleet. Want to guess if its pedal or paddle?

Aliex Folgueira haha I was waiting for you to say something about the “Good” video 😆 I already have a motorized yak/solo skiff I think the Solo needs a remote trolling motor then it’ll be a fishing beast but until then... I don’t like taking it out when it’s too windy because I’m reaching for that paddle. I did finally get the Lightning yak. I did a demo on the Bonafide Kayak and thought wow this is a “Good” kayak and what would make it “Great” is a mirage drive option. So when I saw the Lightening initially I thought wow that is a great looking yak; the front from the Bonafide; the hatch from the PA and the rear rudder like the New outback and PA; sold the Jon Boat and finally got to order one. That new Vibe looks awesome too. That might be the next one 👍 I’m waiting for that “Great” flipping video on the new Vibe. #getoutthehousegofish

I have to say I love my bonafide ss127 with trolling motor. Super great stability and fish ability. Down fall no pedal drive, it sucks when you drain battery and got paddle that barge 😂. I’m waiting on real good reviews on vibe shearwater 125 and demo it myself. If I don’t like it, going pick up native 12.5 max. Reason I don’t want a old town ipilot, I’ll would be in the same spot I’m in with my bonafide.

kyle you are 100000% correct on all that, the ss127 with a motor is the best kayak there is.. well fighting with the autopilot... the shearwater my only concern is that it may be slow...but bixpy will help a lot...can't wait to review it. slayer max is an amazing boat! and you have so much options to rig it up!!!

Aliex Folgueira what is the fast you got the bixpy up to? I know you do a lot bay and offshore fishing. I use my kayak for bayou, skinny water, backwater bass fishing. places where you can’t really get a bass boat into and also marsh fishing for specs, redfish and bass. I been flipping between putting another 24v trolling motor or torqeedo ultralight 1103 on next kayak. Use the motor power get me where I want get to. Then use the pedal drive, paddle or push pole move around in that area, not kill battery.

For less than half the price of a pedal drive I put a Newport 55 lb thrust trolling motor on my Wilderness kayak with all the bells and whistles. I get hands free trolling all day with a standard marine battery. I like the idea of the pedal drive for exercise, but I would only buy a used one. It would really be nice if the kayak companies would standardize the size of their pedal drives to fit all their kayaks. Paying $1,200 for half a bicycle with fins doesn't work for me.

Can you pull up the pedal system when out on the water and switch to a paddle? River i go to has areas that getting extremely shallow where the propeller will drag on rocks

Pedal kayaks ate a game changer when it comes to being in areas with current or fishing in the wind and especially when your fishing trolling fisheries. I fish bass and pedals are nice but not a deal breaker but when I'm trolling for kokanee I wouldn't want to do it without a pedal yak. I can easily run two rods and mess with my fish finder or gear without disrupting my fishing.

Another benefit of a peddle kayak system is you can bring a paddle with you to increase your speed by peddling and paddling. Two propulsion systems equals twice the speed.

I fish from a Bonafide SS127 and i used to have a Jackson Cuda HD. I never had a problem with it. They do make power poles and anchor wizards for anchoring... so the whole positioning thing is a non issue

Pedal kayak prices are continually coming down in price. Their versatility and efficiency of use are worth consideration depending upon the type of fishing and location. That said, I would try to purchase the lightest pedal drive kayak that is relatively easy to paddle in case of drive failure. I sold my Hobie OB in favor of a Bonafide and placed a Bixpy on it, which works more like a power “assist” trolling motor at about the same weight as a pedal drive. The resale of the high quality ocean ready OB took care of most of the cost of the new 127 and the Jet. Each kayak excels in their own special fishing applications but remain good for multiple applications. One exception would be that I would not fish offshore in the Bonafide.

Been in paddle yaks all my life up to month or so ago. Now in hobie outback mainly due to neck (C6/7) shoulders gone bad. I am not too experienced in the pedals? But my thoughts are a lot same issues I faced with paddle I face with pedal? Winds still a wench! Just like the paddle. Still use a sculling paddle to stay in position with hobie as reverse involves yanking a cable? PDL prop would be easier I think? But never been in one. Pedals are certainly easier but ain't end all to be all; a lot of same issues. Glad I did my time in the paddle though kinda like learning to shoot iron sights before getting a scope.

I had over 10 years in a paddle ocean yak br fish yaks. My 2nd yr in pedal yak. Trade offs. Paddle light bulky peddle bulky heavy now need trailer. On the water paddle easy goes almost everywhere pedal more restrictive . So after all that yes worth it thank you

I've been thinking about getting a pedal kayak for a long time and this video is like you were talking to me lol I literally have a spread sheet with all the models, price, weights, availability and the "does it flip" rating from your videos haha, after all, I don't have a good balance so for me the kayak being stable is the main concern. So if you could spend $2500, what would be your top 3 pedal kayaks (not mentioning the Sportsman MK lol) based on stability??? Mine so far are the OT 120 PDL, Malibu PDL and the Passport 12

Hey man watched your videos for some time now and i really want to get into ocean fishing i live in jersey i want to do some offshore fishing for stripers bluefish etc or pretty much anything i can catch i am really interested in the new vibe shearwater coming out but im also just as interested in the old town autopilot 136 ... but i dont know what would be the better bank for my buck concerning the " auto pilot " feature on the old town is amazing but thatd be the only reason id be getting it im just torn between the two

I am considering buying a pedal kayak ,but hesitant because I use my kayak a Aqua Glide Blackfoot for fly fishing and my concern is my fly line getting tangled up on the pedals. Any thoughts about how practical fly fishing out of a pedal kayak would be appreciated.

Dude, you should review high end inflatable fishing kayaks. Can't wait until pedal drive inflatables come out ( I know Hobie makes one but it's Big Bird yellow and wayyy too expensive)

A cheap paddle kayak will get you onto the water. A quality paddle kayak will get you onto the water further. A pedal kayak will get you onto the water to go even further. Hands free fishing was my priority. I fish a lot of docks and bridge pylons so the reverse pedal drives are fantastic.

from Canada here and I am having a hard time understanding why they are so expensive ? so basically the same price I can get a boat with a trailer for around the same price is the plastic they use laced with gold ?

Hey Aliex, yes please make a video comparing pedal with motorized kayaks. I like the speed aspect of the pedal, but am concerned about less deck space in front of you and where do you put a larger fish when you catch one?

I have watched alot of your videos and have subscribed. Thank you for all the reviews. I am a novice kayaker. I have a pelican icon 100x angler that I have been using for the past 3 years. I upgraded it in alot of ways, anchor trolley, better seat, etc. I am ready to upgrade to a better kayak. I want a pedal kayak and not the hobie style. I need a instant hands free reverse for some of the fishing I do. I want a 12 ft kayak that is stable and can hold some weight for multiple day trips. I also want to fish in larger lakes for big fish. What is the best bang for your buck.

Old Town Sportsman 120 pdl, thats what I would get at $2200 it is a great deal, super stable, moves efficiently, lots of capacity, upgraded seat, 5 years drive warranty. Excellent choice

Hi Alex. Yes. I think pedal kayaks are worth it if below $1500. But personally, I think companies who make pedal kayaks over $1500, I call it “price gauging”. That’s just my financial parameter that is.

Aliex Folgueira Yes. I totally see all the R & D that’s been done. But for an example like Cycling, I have a handful of bicycles in my garage ranging $1000-5000. I’ve been riding bikes for 30 years. Ever time I walk in to my garage, I usually pick the lower priced bikes. Why? Because it still works just about the same. Mind you, the higher end ones may be a bit lighter and the mechanisms may work a little more precise. But nothing that are a real game changer. I’ve heard and listened to All the companies Hype about their new products for a long time now. I’ve since stopped listening to them. All and all, I just look for something that works well enough to Enjoy the sport. Still love watching your vids to find out what new products are out there.

Fishing Rod Yup. My sentiments exactly. I just want something that’s durable, affordable and mechanically similar to the higher priced brands which will afford me that Dependability in the product I choose. Thus, the analogy of the the higher end bike component Shimano XTR vs lower end Deore version and the Hobie 360 drive vs other drives; I’m still out there biking or kayaking and Having Fun. Yes. I do have a spare prop blade tho. 👍

If your paddling.... your not fishing. It was a no brainer for me. I had my feelfree lure 11.5 for a year without pedals. I'm in the ocean near channels alot, for this pedals is a must! I was having to reel in my line to reposition my boat every time i had large wakes coming my way. best 1k i have spent in a while.

i have a sit on top pelican. 2 of them actualy. got em a few years back from dicks for 150 on clearance and they were the last 2 they had. they were origionaly 300. so i have 2 sit on top yaks i have rigged now for fishing for the price of one. super awesome score. BUT, im ready to upgrade to something like this. they arent that stable, theres no stadium seat so my butt and back hurts after 2 hours or so and i fish a good bit and i know it will money well spent for me.

I don't understand , I went through a ton of comments but didn't see anyone talking about how deep the water should be. for me I live in Nebraska so I am mainly putting in on the river and heading down stream until I get to some backwaters but the river itself is shallow more often than it is deep. so would it still be worth it to buy pedal drive ? I would love to get one , but there is not much lakes to fish around here that haven't been overfished so a guy has to get creative and fish the rivers backwaters .

Seems like a Craigslist trolling motor and small deep cycle battery are much cheaper than the $1000 premium they charge for a pedal kayak. I would gladly pedal if they were at all reasonable. When you can skip the pedaling, for 1/4 the price its a hard sell.

@michaellowe3665 In my state they force you to buy a biyearly registration for any watercraft with a motor. That's right they charge a gasoline yacht the same fees they charge canoe with a trolling motor. It's an abusive law and that is a case where the pedal kayak would come in handy.
