American Pit Bull Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, (more commonly referred to as Pit Bulls and Staffies) -
the two names are often used interchangeably,
but are the two breeds the same thing?
Are Pit Bulls and Staffies the same?
Please Note: I'm comparing Staffy Bull/English Staffy, not the American Staffordshire Terrier(Amstaff) with Pit Bull Terrier in this video.

I was one of those people who used to believe that staffies were dangerous thanks to media bias until i went and got one. Dont think i could ever get a different breed of dog again. Best dog i've ever had the pleasure of owning. My staffy was around kids and other dogs his whole life and was the biggest softie. When my niece used to sleep overnight with us, he would spend all the time in the house with her just goofing around making her laugh constantly and then eventually falling asleep curled up with my 6 year old niece. They really are the most loving dogs i've ever seen, hopefully others dont believe the media when they make these false claims that they are aggressive/dangerous. No dog is dangerous by nature, they are products of their owners and upbringing.

It's great to hear that you were able to overcome media bias and give a Staffordshire Bull Terrier a chance. It's unfortunate that certain breeds are often portrayed negatively in the media, leading to misconceptions and stereotypes. As you experienced firsthand, each dog has their own unique personality and temperament, and it's important not to judge them based solely on their breed. Proper training and socialization play a big role in a dog's behavior, and it's up to owners to provide them with the care and guidance they need to be happy and well-adjusted pets. It's heartwarming to hear about your Staffy's affectionate nature and how he bonded with your niece. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with this wonderful breed!

I rescued my American Staffie from the local humane society. She somehow was at the shelter, someone adopted her, and then she was retuned to them. As soon as I saw her I knew that I was going to be her human. She's kind of odd, and diva-ish, loves everyone, and has genetic skin problems. She's 9 and I'm lucky to be her human for the end of her life.

@gonestacmac 2 года назад
@@rachelrogstad9955 They told me at the HS she had Alopicia caused by neglect. She was a little skinny, but not emaciated. I found out later that all "Bully" breeds carry a defect in their DNA causing them to sometimes have sparse fur, and other things concerning their skin and fur. It is more common in lighter colored dogs, all according to her vet. If you look at the two dogs in the opening scene, you can see the dog on the right (Lighter colored) has very thin fur on her chest, and you can see her skin, through the sparse fur.

As a Pitbull owner and a former Amstaff owner I can tell you this is the most accurate video I’ve seen. One remark: yes the Pitbull can be formed to be a social dog but this doesn’t go very deep. Caution is always needed and letting them play in a dog park isn’t responsible. They might not start the fight but they will finish it, and the dog involved. No matter how well socialised they are, there is always genetics to take into account! Please do not take the risk, socialise and train your Pitbull on obedience but be very cautious on contact with other dogs after 18 months at least. Stud - stud will definitely get you in trouble.

Thanks, I was going to add something along those lines myself. Bad dogs are usually the result of bad owners, but genetic traits are bred into dogs too. Both breeds were intentionally developed to be very aggressive, not to humans, but to other animals, and any dog from either breed will have a much higher degree of aggression than most other breeds of dogs. I owned a Staffie who LOVED people, especially children, and was a genuine sweetheart. On the other hand, any other living thing he could get at had a choice to either submit or fight to the death. He was the only dog I ever owned that got excited and happy at the prospect of a fight. These are extraordinarily athletic and powerful dogs, and have the potential to do massive damage very quickly. For instance mine, with just a heartbeat of opportunity, tore half the face off my neighbor's Boston Terrier.

I recognise this very much in my english staffy, everyone who has ever met him, including dog owners, have said he's the sweetest most loving dog they've ever met. But if another dog initiates a fight or in some cases just pushes the envelope with aggressive behaviour or excessive growling the only reaction to that is fight mode. In every instance so far however, if I get in between and I pull my dog away from the fight, it's also over and done with as far as he is concerned, dont even need to leash him after, but it is grounds for either never letting him of leash or playing referee when he is, shadowing him every second to intervene should something heat up.

I notest this with my boy he only wants to play with any dog but if any male dog shows any aggression he goes directly into fight mode

@@biggusgibbus8144 And yet you think it's okay to keep this timebomb? Disgusting. Who tf wants to have something that can instantly maul, maim, or kill, no matter how much "training" and "socializing" it has received? This breed needs to go extinct. No need for them, EXCEPT MAYBE as hog hunters.

I own both. And I can say from my own personal experience is that their temperaments are quite different. My staff is a lover. (Has dog issues after being attacked too many times. But I can work with that). My Pitt, well, shes extremely protective and on guard. Something I've never trained her to be. I have a 1 year old American Staffordshire Terrier. He's the best dog I've ever had. He loves me and my family unconditionally, including my grandchildren. He is one of the 5 breeds that are considered Pitbull. These 5 breeds all come from the same ancestors. People started crossbreeding this and that and it got confusing. It doesn't matter which of the 5 breeds you may own because it's all about how you raise them. All 5 are loyal and very eager to please so if you want them to be aggressive they will because they live to please their human. I would never want that for my buddy so I made sure he was around people all the time from the day he came to live with us as a 6 week old pup. The result was a dog that loves everybody, especially kids. The only way he would hurt someone is if he feels one of his family members is in danger from someone else. All 5 breeds are basically the same, smart, strong, loyal and very loving animals. They fall into the wrong hands and get judged harshly instead of the owners. I hope that changes because they deserve so much better. They just want to please the ones they love

I fell into the category of people who "thought" they were the same & because of biases, fear based "reporting" I thought they were viscous, naturally. I COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG!! I'd always had lap dogs & because of a bad experience I was fearful of big dog's. 7+ yrs ago my Broody (Brutis Xavier) was dumped in our neighborhood & came to our back door, waiting to be let in as if to say "I'm back home didn't you miss me" & that was it! He IS my baby & literally the best dog EVER!! I'm now a big advocate for both breeds since it's people who have caused the breeds to be labeled & completely misunderstood, they're NOT vicious. They're loving, very intelligent & big babies.

Love bugs :)) that can kill you with kisses. They do tend to don't respect personal boundaries and are a bit stubborn at times, but if you appeal to their soft side they will do whatever you want. I can see why they choose them for dogfighting in the past, because their reaction times are so small. Let's face it, they aren't meant to be owned by everyone, you need to have good dog training skills and be able to control them at all times.

I only had one family dog in my 50 years, I've always had cats. But my husband and I were looking on~line at local rescues thinking one day we should rescue a dog. Here was this sweet face that jumped out at us, a staffie and boxer mix with the head tilt and bow~tie. Chester came as a week~end test, that was over two years ago. He is the sweetest, most stubborn and pouty pup and we love him. The only issue we had to address was the mouthing, we were full of bruises! They are a play all day breed, especially when mixed with a boxer!

I am currently on Staffie number 2 in my life. I can only say that they are big babies, very intelligent, and wonderfull family dogs. They just love children and are gentle, They love to play fight really rough and bite and tease you in your hand or arm, but will never actually try to hurt you, and they naturally know they can't do that stuff with little children. Gentle, fun, lots of energy, but at the same time they love watching tv with the family, or cuddle together. All around they are just a lot of fun and will give all of their love if they are being loved.

My 28 lb English Staffordshire of 15 years passed away the year before last. I’ve recently adopted a mix breed pit bull who although similar has distinctive differences. She’s 55 lbs of love. Even though they are both strong dogs and are clearly related I believe they are a separate breed. All in all I do think it takes a committed owner to properly train them. They are very loving and sensitive and need lots of love and attention:

As a child, my family adopted a staffy that was not suitable for 'showing' as he had skin problems. One of the loveliest dogs ever, apart from his propensity to attack other dogs.... He was very intelligent, and so when he was walked by my dad (off leash) he would judge whether or not he was far away from my dad to get away with it! Thankfully, he never was 😊. But years later I used to walk my mongrel in the park with someone else who had a staffy, and this staffy wasn't at all dog aggressive. So it depends to a large extent on the dog's personality. Recently I was forced to adopt an ABT, and he is as loving as my still missed staffy - and I was taken completely by suprise when he one day lunged at a man on one of our beach walks!. Thankfully he was still a large puppy, and so I was able to hold him back. But I didn't dare walk my neighbour's ABT again..... Up until then he had loved everyone, including my other dogs. After I was forced to adopt this ABT, he attacked one of my dogs (food related), and another dog that burrowed his way into our garden..... So, my opinion is that staffies and bull terriers are pretty much the same in many respects, but it depends so much on their personality, and of course, size.... I would be able to hold back a staffy, but know that it is very difficult to hold back my full grown ABT.....So yes, I am far from the ideal owner, but I love him and would never consider just throwing him out on the streets.

Definitely different breeds. The differences between American Staffordshire Terrier and American Pitbull Terrier are however very small, but even then you can differentiate them. Amstaff usually has black noses all around and a more heavier build. Pitbulls are a bit more athletic and the noses aren't usually black, but I've seen them in black too. Great video.

I have never been a "dog snob." I don't really care about breeds. All my dogs have been mixed breed dogs I have adopted, or who have adopted me. One of my two current dogs is a beagle-bull, half beagle, half pit-bull, I adopted from a shelter. He is a 45 pound lap dog who is gentle, sweet, very affectionate towards me, extremely friendly to everybody, and is friends with all my neighbors, their kids and their dogs. I live in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee, on a little farm, so my dogs can roam free. I have seen him as far as a mile and a half from my home, but he always comes home before dark, and as time has passed stays closer and closer to my little farm. He looks like a giant, very muscular beagle, except just tan and white, no black. He really is an ideal dog.

We were blessed with a beautiful mutt puppy. We're learning many things about her. She's 11mo right now and appears to be a pit-staffie as I see traits of both of these similar dog types with in my sweet puppy. She may very well have some boxer in there as well. Thankfully my husband and I had the pleasure of raising a darling stubborn beagle before bringing a pit type into our home. I recommend raising at least one dog before getting a pit type. I'm so thankful we did. She's highly intelligent and extremely strong and rambunctious. So it's important to consider handling such a dog. We.believe in positive reinforcement pet training and it.might take a little longer to.teach proper behavior. She's a well behaved psychotic puppy and we're cool with it.

I have a mixed Pit Bull and American Staffordshire Terrier boy. He is tan and brown merle with white legs, chest & neck. Green eyes 😍 His mom was a red nose pit bull and his dad was an AmStaff. He is only 4 months old and has been heavily socialized. He is consistently dominant in playtime and protective of me toward other dogs. I cannot express how being a strong pack leader to your bully is so important. I can only imagine the negative behaviors and unfortunate events that would stem from a weak pack leader. Goose is so strong willed and stubborn. If not for consistent training, he would be just another statistic in the bully world. As responsible bully owners, we must show them love and protect them by always staying in control of our dogs. They require a vigilant pack leader in training. Goose is a lovable clown but he is also a fierce and loyal dog already at such a young age. It is in their blood. Please be aware and own up responsibly.

The only way you can tell if a dog is truly a red nose is with a pedigree. In the pedigree there needs to be OFRN dog's or dog's that have OFRN in their pedigree. OFRN is old family red nose. Merle is not excepted by any register of the American Pit bull terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier. Neither of these breeds come in Merle. Anyone that is selling a American pit bull terrier saying they are Merle is being dishonest. Same goes for the American Staffordshire Terrier. Only way for this to happen is by breeding with a breed of dog that has the Merle gene. Merle American pit bull terrier = mixed dog. Merle American Staffordshire Terrier = Mixed dog. Red nose = OFRN. Bully = American bully. I cannot express how important it is that people be able to distinguish between breeds. For the sake of the dog's and their reputation. As well as being able to purchase or rescue a dog with the confidence of knowing what they bought or rescued.

It sounds like you have a big and strong Staffy mix on your hands! 🐾🐕 It's not uncommon for dogs to vary in size and build, even within the same breed or mix. While your Staffy mix may be larger than average, his size doesn't change the love and companionship he brings into your life. It's great that you did a DNA test to learn more about his genetic makeup. Understanding his breed composition can provide valuable insights into his potential health needs, temperament traits, and behavior tendencies. As he grows, be sure to provide him with proper exercise, training, and socialization to help him thrive and become a well-rounded adult dog. And remember, regardless of size, what matters most is the love and care you provide for your furry friend. 🐶💖

I can say I had a "real" American Pit Bull Terrier and he was one of the nicest dogs I ever had. I'm a little confused of why Staffies were bred to be pets because an APBT is a great pet. Or at least I read they were bred so that people who liked that look could have a pitbull for a pet. Well APBTs are not just wild animals..they are very much people oriented.

Pitbulls are so nice and people think it’s the dog but really it’s the owners

Confused about SBT being breed as pets, why is that?

I think it's just the breeding has been more closely monitored with the AKC.

Because the original bull and terrier was split into 3 types. One type disappeared the Walsall type went on to become the apbt and the Cradley heath went on to become the staffy. The Walsall had a lot of whippet in its bloodline while the Cradley heath type had a lot more bulldog!

The bull and terrier was a type of dog that was being bred in the us at the same time as the uk but as time went on, the dogs started to change so at some point we were left with American bull and terriers and English bull terriers. The English dogs varied in shapes and sizes but ended up as two types that would become the English bull terrier and the staffy bull. By that point the staffy bull made its way to Ireland where it would be brought to the us with the English staffy and bred with American bull and terriers the resulting dogs would be known as the American pitbull terrier and from the apbt would come the amstaff. By the 80s and 90s the amstaff and pit were bred to make the classic American bully but as time went on breeders would add American bulldog, bull mastiff, English bulldog and French bulldog to their lines depending on what they wanted their dogs to look like.

I always believed they were no more than distant relatives at most. After being around several Staffies and then adopting one I came to a more open and flexible mindset. My Staffie was not quite like most here and although the smaller end of average she definitely shared more visual/build traits with a Pittie. I am no expert but just feel we all should be more flexible with our thinking regarding these (and all) beautiful creatures.

I do believe the difference lies in the different Terriors used in the creation. You'll notice a Bull Terrior will tend to be taller than a Staffordshire Bull Terrior. The American Pit Bull Terrior & Bull Terriors used the extinct English White Terrior. The Black & Tan Terrior of that time was smaller in statue. Based on the research i have done over the years.

You are correct that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the Pit Bull are different breeds, although they are closely related and share many similar characteristics. Thanks Paul Wiltshire! 👍
