Over my 53 years of life I have had many different dog breeds in my home as part of the family. However, the AmStaff is by far my all time favorite. They are simply amazing and loveable dogs!
Question: I'm looking to get one from a pound. We currently have 3 dogs, one of which is a 50 pound terrier mix (that actuay looks like he might have some AmStaff in him!). Would any of you see any troubles? I want to be educated in my decisions...

I’ve had an Amstaff and he was the best dog I ever had, loyal and ever wanting to please. Gentle and good natured. I had to put him down a few months ago, I will be looking to get another one
Amstaffs are the absolute best! 💯 Truly the most loving and dedicated breed. Mine never ceases to amaze me with how well he can communicate without even making a sound. The expressiveness of their faces is truly remarkable.
The over protectiveness of children is so true. When I got my amstaff, I had no kids, but she protected every kid she saw. No worry, I had her well trained, so never any issues. But she watched all interactions between any kid and adult with a keen eye.
My six year old rescue Amstaff just met two of our grandkids last month. He fell in LOVE with those two boys!!! Literally the most loving, protective, gentle and playful dog I’ve ever seen with kids! Just another in a very long list of amazing things about this dog.
Our family is happier sobre our AmStaff arrived a year ago! She’s sweet, lovable, loyal, and a real family member. Thank you so much for the great content!
I have had the pleasure of owning a couple of great dogs before I adopted "Stanley". A Husky, and Beagle and now Stanley an AMStaff. While I loved both of the others, Stanley has proven to be my favorite. He is loving, kind and fearless. I have never seen him back down from any dog or situation. Having said that, he wants to sleep in my lap anytime I get in the recliner. He loves meeting strangers on our walks, if they are not afraid of him, he always makes new friends.
I have an amstaf. Stella is a beautiful fawn brindle, she is so loving and great with kids! she will be 2 at the end of september. She has been very easy to train, but I will say she can be stubborn too. Its best to make sure you reinforce the training when they get to that point! They adjust right back to where they were to begin with. So strong and happy! We love our Stella! She is 17 inches and 50 pounds. Never be harsh with your animals, they have the power to be mean right back if they want to.
K Chase, Very true about harsh discipline. My Amstaff is so smart and eager to please he doesn’t need harsh discipline, In addition I’ve noticed that with him (rescued him as a two time loser) it’s very counterproductive as he shuts down. He’s just a truly amazing dog, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to get rid of him.
American staffs are my favorite dogs of all breeds. In my opinion they are more loyal then any dog or human I’ve ever dealt with and will take a bullet in a sec for his or her owner and family. I love my baby and would do the same for her. They show you true love and I thank her every day for teaching me how to love. Best way to say it is if you not ready for a child of your own then this is not the breed for you but if you are the best breed ever. I can walk her without a leash she on my side and on me 24 7 all yr around. Just need to spend time with them and you will the best friend ever more then any human can give. They really are a blessing from GOD. Yes they are a family dog but truly they will only listen to one person 100 %. And they can get up 100 lbs just depends on the blood line. Mine is 60 lbs and still growing she only 1yr and half on a diet. Her momma was 70 and daddy was 90 lbs. she super friendly but I just don’t allow anyone to come up to her because they really can feel a person vibe. Don’t believe In dog fighting but I seen her in action with over dogs trying to be Alphas and didn’t go well for them. Learn your dog they have there own personality. Reason why they have a bad wrap but to me it’s a good thing. If you know how to spend time and train them. Trust mine with my life!!!! Love pittes ❤
Thanks for the video- pretty spot on with their behaviors. I had my dog gene tested and he was 80% AmStaff and 20% American Bulldog. Scary smart- he house and fetch trained himself. He was a dumpster dog found by a friend of mine. Lazy though, He actually slept thru both Hurricanes Irma and Maria (Cat 5's btw) when we lived in St Croix, USVI. He's even replaced my brother as favorite son by my Mom!
My AmStaff is a sweet, gentle soul that has never met a dog or human that she didn't immediately like. We are in a training program to get her certified as a Therapy Dog. I think she would be a good TD and also is a good ambassador for her breed.
I got my Amstaff without even knowing it was an Amstaff , they gave it to my for free when he was 2 months old , since then I have always taken him to the park and socialize him with other dogs and humans so far I’ve received good complements and people love him , he’s 8 months old now and loves to play , I’m proud of him and he’s my first dog
In your experience, howow much truth is in the statement 'it's not for first time owners'. People seem to say this for every breed there is, even for Beagles and Spitzs!
I read about that , & wasn't clear who first was Petey from our was APBT, reg. as AmStaff Colbys Primo, was said set the standard, looked like today's APBT.. whereas. the AmStaff has changed, to be taller, muscular
My girl is a Pitsky (Siberian Husky X Amstaff) and she is the most beautiful animal in the world!! She turns 3 in September and is forever "full of beans!!" But she is great with kids, other dogs, smaller or larger. Very intelligent and has been easy to train, only thing is, she can be stubborn at times and much like most of my school report cards, very easily distracted!! Her prey drive is quite high and her energy levels are intense to say the least but all the same, she is an amazing dog!! Loyal, loving, affectionate, protective and playful, all in one.
Have a half border collie/half amstaff, best dog I have ever known. M grandmother lived her whole life around dogs of all kinds and she felt the same way about him.
We have a big male that loves LOVES our grandchildren he also loves our 3 other dogs and of course my wife and I. He is super gentle and super playful and is always excited when our kids bring their dogs over to play. He never shows any aggressive behavior unless he is protecting his family or other dogs I'm the family. When we go on hikes with the grandkids he doesn't let them get more than 10 feet away or ever out of his sight. He's a cuddle monster at bed time and the smartest dog we've ever had. He's mostly black with a white chest and white band around his neck and one white leg lol he is a bit bigger than described in the video weighing 80 pounds at his last vet visit to which the vet said ... this boy hasn't got an ounce of fat on him he's just full of muscle. He also has accepted his role as number 2 in the pack of dogs behind our tiny 30 pound female Jack Husky mix yeah I said that right lol
That's wonderful to hear! Amstaffs are known for their loyalty and affection towards their owners, and it sounds like you have a special bond with your furry friend. Every dog is unique and it's great that you have found such a wonderful companion in your Amstaff. Dogs bring so much joy and love into our lives, and it's wonderful to hear about your positive experience with your pup.
Our Amstaff is the most well adjusted, well behaved, intelligent dog. He is an absolute athlete. We run for miles every day, (bike). He is a great family dog.
I love dogs and had some in the past 35 Years, but Amstaffs and pitbulls are by far the best. Relaxed, cool, calm and collected. They need good socialisation and they are the best friend you can have in your life. The negaitve side is: It´s like you lose a family member when you have to let them go. I still cry over my first pitbull, a female, who could smile and was highly intelligent. Had her from the shelter and she had three (!!!!) Owners before I got her with 10 month of age. They were overstrained by her power.
All of these facts and not mention of it's close relative the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The Staffy is my breed, but I tend to watch RU-vid recommendations of the AmStaff.
Edit:GREAT VIDEO. EVERYTHING IS TRUE. I have had many dogs other the years; the last 9 I have an Am Staff. I wanted a labrador but my father gave me an ams staff when I had epylepsie and schizophrénie. Just to tell this is one hell of a stigmatised dog. He is a big baby, kind ,yet he protects every member of my family. Intelligent as hell. He has never been trained but understands everything. If I have to write what he does, it will take too much time to describe him. Yes him, not it. He is a member of my family. He has his chamber yet sleeps with my parents like a big baby. He eats before everyone. Knows when to go to walk even if he has a really large yard. He is our everything. Brought joy to us at a time when we were at a all time low. MAX , we love you buddy.
What you don't say here is that the Amstaff is 100% descended from the American Pit Bull Terrier. The Amstaff is a breeding line branched off of the APBT in the 1930's so they could be registered with the AKC. Their appearance has drifted somewhat apart due to preferences of the respective breeders.
@@mumfordthepitbull4581 the Pitbull history is fascinating.. ! I think he did say the 2 breeds used to get pitbull ter. were; Old Eng. bull dog. & white Eng. terrier) Eng. settlers bought them to America, & was renamed American Pitbull ter. ( APBT) 1936. first Ukc reg. APBT was Akc accepted , reg. as Staffordshire bt. First to be dual reg was Petey from our gang, Ukc APBT, AKC reg a Stafford bt Standard was set by Colbys Primo, APBT, & looked like today's APBT) Are kennels today breed Colby line, but are APBT, not Amstaffs 74 Staffy was AKC recog. & American was added , & became Amstaffs
I had a beautiful American staffordshire terrier female name Shelby,I was working as a groomer and a client had her n her parents,he had to travel a lot and he could not keep her he gave her to me and she was amazing with my kids and great with people and other dogs I took her to work with me almost every day to the grooming salón sow amazing breed unfortunately I lost her to cancer in her ovaries in a matter of a week she went from playing to me getting up in the morning and she was laying under my bed on my side n almost dead I put her in the shower got her wet and ran to the vet ,that’s wen we found out. I loved her n we all miss her, I have a beautiful American Stanfordshire terrier boy. N he is as amazing as she was he’s name is diesel
I wished more people watched these maybe they wouldn't be so ignorant on the fact not every dog with a square head is a pitbull and to be honest do you know how hard it would be to try to find a pure blood pitbull the blood line has been so diluted over the years it's ridiculous I to have an amstaff best dog I've ever owned
Never heard of ban on Amstaffs in Russia. I own one and believe me, there are many of them around, I know at least three in my hood which is just a couple of blocks.
I think our Sugar Belle is an AmStaff but we are waiting on DNA results just cause it would be interesting. She was a throw away puppy on the side of the road and is a sweet heart, loving and gentle with everyone. A bit smaller than the dogs in the video but has the same stance and characteristics. We also have a GSD and another mixed something Sammy. All are great with people and gentle. Exercise is huge around here so that point in the video is extremely important to know for any dog owner. No dog is bad it just hasn't been trained properly in my opinion. They are not kids or humans they are dogs.
I just recently got another am staff this one is a male he is 4 months old ..... and I have a female am staff cross Pitbull she is a 5 year old she is very very protective.... she will not play any games when people are going passed the house she will go off ..... It people walk passed the car she will go off but if you walk her ..... She will say hello to some people....
It sounds like your female dog is being pretty protective and gets upset when people walk by your house or car. It's normal for dogs to have a territorial behavior, especially breeds like American Staffordshire Terrier or Pitbull. But don't worry, with time, patience and consistency you can work on building a good relationship between your new puppy and older dog. When introducing the new puppy to your older dog, make sure to supervise their interactions and reward good behavior. Give each of them their own space and resources and gradually increase the time they spend together. Also, consider taking your female dog for a walk before introducing the new puppy, it can help her release some energy and be less reactive. And if you need help, you can always ask for a professional trainer or behaviorist to help you train your dog to ignore people passing by.
Since when are the Amstaffs forbiden in Ukraine? Oo I have one for years, with all the official docs and going to the shows through Europe. Yes, they are in the list of "more dangerous" dogs, but they are not banned for good.
They aren’t banned in Germany or France 😂 In those countries there are no banned breeds but there are laws on owning them They are required to do a course to show they are obedient and under there owners controls and have be muzzled in certain areas but these rules are particularly relaxed
Nor are they banned in Finland either. As far as I know, there's no special requirements involved either with amstaffs in Finland, just the general regulation that applies to every dog owner.
@@dogbreedsFAQ hi,i am portuguese, and i have 2 american pitt bull terriers, i have friends with american staff and they are not prohibited, we just need an easy license to acquire, in portugal there is amstaff breeding.
Yes he said " umbrella" pitb is description of TYPE of dog breed that falls under term pitb. All today's breeds Staffy, AmStaff, bull terrier, Am. bulldog, Bully, trace their ancestry to the original APBT
@@Memow-pk1ng read some history staffie & bulldog breed was around before there was an American pit bull. APBt all have probably more history from Europe, than America.
@@srl2634 I have bean reading , & is a lot to absorb The pitb was from old Eng. bulldog. & old Eng. terriers. Staffy was from county of Staffordshire 1700 settlers bought their pitb. & Staffy to America Renamed American Pit( (APBT 1936 APBT was reg. as AmStaff
@@srl2634 Staffy was a breed already in 1935, from same Eng. bull dog that got Pitb & black tan ter. So are all in same family of. the bulldog & terrier that for the pitb..
They sure as hell aren't banned in Romania. I have one, many others do too. Pitbulls are "banned", people still have them but you cannot sell them online. It is however Romania, things aren't regulated as they would be for example in Denmark. So now I'm debating whether to believer most of this video 🙄
My amstaff is a lovable amazing dog with a lot of love to give the only thing is that her anxiety gets the best of her she is amazing towards little kids and animals and cats except towards big dogs does anyone have this problem
I have three my cousin has two his sister has one and needless to say that we are in Amstaff when I Prescott my female I was a novice dog trainer she very protective of what is considered her home through learning with her my two males are completely opposite to the way she is they like going in the car they come to work with me
Princess Riley the 6 month old Amstaff goes everywhere with me that she isn't explicitly forbidden. I describe her as a honey ham sandwich with goof sauce. I love that she loves to cuddle up for naps after we go out and play. Affectionatness of these angels got turned up to 11 and I don't want to be without it ever again.
Amstaffs r the best..whichever dog u 1st have,if u gonna let it rule you,ur fkd..u got 2 show them whose boss from the start..my 1st dog is an amstaff,u learns as u go on..but u got 2 nip the bad behaviour from the start and b strong..unless u got other animals at home 2 mix with id keep em on a leash at all times..they love there chase and would rip a cat or rabbit apart in seconds...but an amstaff is so loyal and loving..a perfect dog.
@@jimmyharris9279 the Staffordshire bt. was already a UK recognized breed 1935. 1700sEng. settlers bought their pitbull terriers, were renamed American , 2 types were bred, AmStaff went to the show ring, & Staffy was still used for pit fighting 1936 AmStaff , AKC 1974 Staffy
Hello my name is Jim I recently purchased a amstaff he is blue 8 months old and weighs around 58 pounds. He is a great dog and anyone watching this video is interested I have a great breeder of American Staffordshire her name is Anika chase and is out of south Carolina and can find her on face book.
i live on the streets and last oct found a rescue pup and i thought was just a pit bull mix mutt. it turned out he's pure amstaff. i never want any other dog the rest of my life. i want to pass this guys bloodline down. not to make a profit. just to have his bloodline for myself so minimal pups
These dogs cannot be labeled as a pitbull anyway is a game bred dog they got their history from being in the fighting ring bulls and other other large animals they banned that they started fighting them against one another
Amstaff have different stuff in their bloodline in pitbulls might have been created by the same type of blood but they have changed some of the bloodline in them so they're not as aggressive as a pitbull get a bad rap because the people that own them don't know how to make sure they are maintained so they do not hurt nobody
Rubbish. An American Staffordshire terrier is an American pitbull terrier. 100% No other dog breed was ever introduced to separate them. One breed of dog two separate names.
1:00 FALSE The four Pitbull type breeds are the American Pitbull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Bully.
The 3 breeds AKC. reg are AmStaff, Staffordshire bt,( Staffy) Bullterrier , the egg heads. 2 variety , white & colored & Miniature, separate breed Not AKC. American Pit bt APBT American bulldog & Bully They are ALL under. umbrella term. Pitbull .. !!
In ROMANIA the AMSTAFF and PitBuLLS are alowed to own and to keep them outside or in the house. Nobody cares where you keep it ! If it is on your property is ok and if you have a leash on streets and for his mouth that cage , it is ok . So , you are allowed LEGAL in ROMANiA to own 100 Pittbulls and 100 Amstaff or even more , how much you wish ❤ , and by the way , these dogs are amazing friendly and protectors and good for all activities you have in this life ! 😉 Your video is nice and i like it , but because of fake information about the Law for Pittbulls and Amstaffs in Romania what you said , i must give you a dislike , but i will subscribe to your channel . All the best ! 👍 By the way , i found your video serching to buy an AMSTAFF 🙂))) AND i am romanian :) They are LeGaL Dogs in Romania 🙂👍 And by the way again : i had one AMSTAFF with Pedigree and he had alot of muscles , but unfortunetly he died . :(
And I don't understand how you can call American Bulldog nowhere close to the bloodline they have more of a mastiff and bull dog treats Pitbull was bred out of them
I'm just mentioning the common knowledge about "Pit Bulls"/ ambiguous grouping of dogs or an umbrella term for these dogs. Some references mentioned American Bulldog as one of them.
