I can tell you from my experience. I am above 40 now and all my colleagues are above 40. Nothing happens much, you just get more responsibility, you keep clearing mess that younger ones has created in code and you also speak with stakeholders all times. You understand architecture better and look at bigger picture. Software industry embraces all.
Hey this happened to me :) , I am 45 ! Was a middle level manager in Production Services... lost/left job due to various reasons.... I reskilled myself with all the latest Technologies and back with a Bang :) I work for a Engineering MNC as a Front End Web Developer
Not really. Knowing the latest framework, language or even tech is not what sets apart best engineers from the rest. It's the in depth understanding of the technologies and platforms that they have worked on which they can easily apply to newer technologies. Transitioning to newer tech will be much easier for them as compared to people with less experience. And if one is constantly updating then that person would already know about that tech.
54 and still writing code, just as a member of the staff, but I understand what you're saying about ageism, it has more to do with lack of energy to keep on learning new things and the mental stamina to take on stressful projects (even just weekly assignments), there is a sense of overly stressed or even burned out quickly, than any form of 'discriminating' me based on age. But I do wonder how long can I take the 'stresses' of coding etc. Learning new things I still enjoy and open to try new things, as if, I never left my first job, always learning, but body/mind catches up with age. I can not into climbing the ladder, 'member of the team' is what I have been all these years, so once done with coding, next I don't know, here in Canada retirement is 67, can't imagine debugging at 67, so may be ta 60 retire from s/w and rest and pass time with a different career and and easier job, for 25% the s/w pay.
Sir are you facing any neck pains, or eye problems and so many diseases? Sorry for asking this question so many people told to me after 10-15 years in software industry you face many health issues is it real? Please reply 😅
@Eswar Mudunuri health issues are not just for s/w industry, just sitting in front of computer has its challenges. So find ways to stay healthy, good diet, physical activity, good rest, you know life balance as they say, optimal physical and mental health is a combination of things, if maintained you will be fine as a s/w developer.
After 40 only pressure increases and responsibilities increase both at job and home. Health also becomes an issue. Deliverables become more difficult. But people dont become jobless in IT. Its only more stress if one can handle it, no problems. Most people I know in IT (who are above 40) are planning intentional retirement by 50. Just because they dont want to to deal with this pressure or stress and they have enough money.
Companies like Congnizant, TCS, Wipro, Capgemini, Infosys hardly fire employees. In TCS I have seen 55 years old working without any such knowledge and hardly got any promotion. Also in Congnizant I have seen same thing.
I hope you're saying this about Cogni after your own/known someone's experience. Cogni became an extremely volatile workplace after management change few years back.
No company in the world (private company) will ever terminate anyone based on age. I was in a India MNC 1 year ago and i had 3 collegues who are 45 43 46 who does Development. 2 Senior managers around 48-49 who were learning Cloud computing. I moved to abroad now and shocked to see 22-23 years experience aged 45-46 senior software engineer. If you are good and active in your Work always private industries welcomes you because its end of the day business. Indian IT had hierarchy issue 10-12 yeaea ago . It is changing now. I have a colleague works out of Russia location 58 years of age he is a Software engineer.
A much needed video. Thanks a lot sir. Even my college teacher was saying the last week that we might be jobless after 45 years age. Your video really cleared a lot of doubts for us.
TC around 1.5 CR. Tech stack would be a very long list as I kept on adopting as per the evolution of technologies. Currently my contributions cut across multiple teams and tech stacks.
The reason people don't see old software engineers because software engineering at big scale is relatively newer than other professions. Since it's newer profession there are very less old people here. As time progresses you guys will see more old software engineers.
Plz make a video on detail analysis of confluent review,,, and also make a video on top companies offerings remote jobs part 2...as you are the only one youtuber on which stats we can believe😊
The only advantage according to me that service based company has over product based company is greater job security and this becomes even more important after the age of 40. Period. Edit : when I commented 8 months ago about Amazon, everyone laughed. What is the situation today as of May 2023.
@@suvamroy9426 Amazon laid off 1 lakh people overall as of the latest news that I read. How many service based companies did you hear doing that this year. It's not my perception. Just telling the fact
In software company your dedication generally more towards company /career of yours. From 24 to 60 years, you continuously learning, dedicated, try to become, I am the best in best company, Only one question for which what you get "10% to 30%" higher salary ? It means you are pledged your soul and entire 36 years for 10 to 30% more salary ? The pledge of soul includes your life, joy, happiness. Just think "Jindagi naa aave dubaara". Your youth, your wiife, the days you want to play with you kid, pet never comes in Software, if you pledge your Soul.
I seriously don't understand why an organization fire employee who becomes little slow because of age because honestly a 40 year old has many responsibility and duties outside work. If you expected employee to work whole day that's just bad morality
This video is not relevant to all. 90% people in IT industry doesn't get a crore package. Most of Indian company like tcs, infosys, wipro etc never pay that much. Everyone can not go to FAANG. video should be generic and should full fill need of these 90% low paid people. I know it's a leading industry, we should switch company as well. But after 10 year of experience switching also difficult. Then what to do??? I have few plan to tackle those issues.
True, crore package at SDE 3 is rare. Amazon is one of them who offers but that comes with expectations as well. Amazon employees has complained of getting anxiety attack due to stress.
@@barunhalder1231 the way 1 million fresh software engineers are joining IT sector each year ...do you think this is even relevant? Competition gonna increase in future.. packages will be high but life span gonna be short
@@PranayBrajabashi that's another point of discussion. I myself do not chase money. I try to keep myself stress free as much as possible. For same reason I do not appear for Amazon interview 😜
Dear Soumyajit we are not seeing your videos nowadays. Its been quite a while now. Hope everything is all right. Hoping to see you back on your channel
It is extremely unlikely for a 35 year old manager to hire a 50 year old software engineer. That's the real reason IT workers have an expiration date. Nothing else matters.
This video was insightful. I'm a 12 years experienced software developer. I have lost passion for programming and want to move on to managerial role like Techinical Product manager or Project Manager. But unfortunately I'm getting senior developer roles which i hate it to the core. I tried get a transfer with org i work with but due to management, my team was let go. Any software professionals who has transitioned into non programming roles, please guide me as i'm just working as dev just for the sake of money without any interest in work. please help!!
Brother are you facing any neck pains, or eye problems and so many diseases? Sorry for asking this question so many people told to me after 10-15 years in software industry you face many health issues is it real? Please reply 😅
in my little experience, i actually saw girls not preferred and especially 50+ (not sure of 40+) in Indian context not preferred though am sure it's changing at times by enforced policies .. i could also see problem used to be from both sides ... US and other advanced nations maintain relatively far better work life balance and relatively far less bias's through the same challenges of changing technologies, competition etc. ... because what they don't have is abundance of freshers and youth ready in queues to be exploited for money and their time ... that's luxury of free lunch, extra margins and no voice for the company management ... So, beyond their a**, i don't think younger boys bring anything better when compared to willing to skill up experienced people. Technology is not physical sport where youngster have natural advantages. In my vicinity, 50 is roughly the time when these people really get squeezed between kids grown up to about std 10th to 12th looking for more help and parents genuinely needing help
Money is the only attraction -- when 25 years old guy got ito IT and paid Rs 75K per month -- and sent on H 1 B everything was great -- The moment H1 B is dried up and pay also got reduced now everything is hunky dorry -- Its life -- in 1970s Banking bacame rage and many youngsters joined banks -- BUT that being public sector there is nothing called hire and fire and most of those joinedin 1970s retired as two to three steps higher than what they joined may be Manger of small branch maximum - BUT IT came in late 1990s with big bang with huge salary spanky office space -- beutiful girls around -- free coffee -- free lunch in some places -- Flying to USA like next door -- All came as a heaven on earth -- Now things are settling -- Good sense is prevailing -- I have seen a BCOM just pass guys and girsl were getting salary higher than MBBS Ms surgeons of govt hospitals --

There are 6 acts govern Factory and Banking -- which ensured some what gurantee for your job although the job satisfaction wsa not there even in those companies -- COME 1995+ -- We suddenly got deluge of IT software jobs which DID NOT COME UNDER FACTORIES ACT and hence does not get protection under law -- initially it was beutiful -- High pay -- At the age of 25 Son or daughter got Rs 45K salary where as FAther was at his 55+ getting 30 + -- Beutful offices -- Nice cafeteria -- OPportunities go to USA and other countries everything was great -- This was golden period till 2015 or so -- So many undeserving peropla got H 1 B visa -- One guy was having a Book on JAVA for Dummy's series who had gone to USA as JAVA expert under H 1 B Visa -- These were early 2000 -- Then 2009 economic slowdown many soft ware companeis closed down like YAHOO SATYAM - Infact in 2008 or so YAHOO use to pay rs 30 lakhs per year even in Bangalore -- Sansken gone SONATA software ( I do not know whether it is there or not ) .. from 2015 onwards consolidation taking place and major transformation taking place as far as low end jobs are concerned such as Testing which now tranfomed into AUTO Testing ITES jobs are gone after OTP came etc.. Hence IT sector is now vitim of all development they only did over a period of time -- The linear model which all IT services propagated which means more people means more revenue is going off -- and clients are now asking for fixed bid contractacts which is beneficiar to employers .. Too many places high level managers are becoming liability and can be done away with -- This can be done easily by layoffs which is not restricted by Law.. Hence whatever IT sector is facing other sectors have faced in the past although degree and nature of problem was different -- Hence this is not new-- I personally expericned this when my Salary was rs 12 lakhs per Annum -- I was interviewing one girl who is hardly having 5 years experince asking for rs 18 lakhs salary -- I had put in 20 years then -- It is common in IT -- This will disturb the ecosystem which is now happening .. I sensed this in 2015 itself .. Anyway some sense will prevail when new employees become reasonable and start taking theri job and contribution seriously than the facilities and compensation. That is what I was trying to say -- Sorry for the long post as ot was required to explain what I was trying to say
@@sureshpolali8685 Anyone upskilling and staying current won't get outdated is what i believe, be it linear model or not. Also, i appreciate that girl showing confidence to ask for what she thought was her worth or even if she tried a random hit ... the way HR takes employees for a ride, she was well in her rights to do so ... she could do it because this is the age of information where it's becoming harder and harder for organizations to make fool of employees and make them slaves like happened, especially before liberalization ... in India, though, they still easily find ways out because of immense shortage of jobs. If CEOs and higher ups can earn multiple times each year and Organizations grow 10 20 30% then why can an average employee who's making it happen not do the same ... it happens because of the power imbalance which girls like that are attempting to shift...i wish more people do the same.
Thank you for sharing such experience. I would request you to share some insight for people like me who start learning at the age of 37 to get into Tech Industry
But the point is most of the software engineers are avg and getting at terminal level at sde2 Or similar designation so what happens to them once they cross 8 years of experience? Nice video tho

hey soumyajit...could you do a video on how much does a sde in faang should have as a target to have in total saved up in order to implement FIRE...could you bring some of the said colleagues who have achieved this goal on the podcast and share some insights by the way thanks a lot for these videos

Don't misguide people by mentioning exorbitant compensation. There are companies which provide such salaries but it's not a industry norm or not most companies afford it. What you talk about is possibly in some extent applicable to FAANG equivalent but there is no absolute truth beyond it. Sorry. But I agree on your continuous learning suggestions which is the most important thing to do 🙂. Learn to enjoy the learning.
Driving is skill -- Production of a Bus is knowledge -- Hence as you go up in the leader one need to ask fundamental question of what I am doing for what ?.. Transition from skill to knowledge is a must - if one wants to really make maximum out of life -- One can remain as skillful for long like driver of VOLVO Bus at the age of 50 -- It becomes that much difficult in IT industry to manage a team of say 50 people when attrition of at 27 % -- Manager is always looking out for people and doing nothing else -- At 45 years one becomes Program manager or Account manager then hiring is biggest job -- delivering what customer wants happens automatically through good engineers -- That is the problem and those engineers are being exploited by management which now engineers are coming to know off -- this is same thing as demand and supply and major single most important attraction is money and that remains same always
My manager is nearly 50 and still having a good time. One of the seniors retired after 18 yr service.(by his choice). So this aegism is a myth. You just dont code arpund much, but manage things. Design and architect software. etc. Hell most sde's have enough money invested by 40's that they actually don't need to work.
Hi, i am a 12 year experienced professional working on Microsoft technologies in a service based company. Is it possible to switch to DSA and get jobs in a product based company and do recruiting companies prefer such transitions?
I want to switch my job because I am not interested in the technology they are using and also salary is very low for bca graduates. I am interested in data analyst.
Hi Sir, I am a 2021 Btech IT graduate. I had got placed as a Software Engineer at a company, but after joining they put me in a BA role. Its been around 11 months and seeing my friends getting promoted and enjoying their life, I get very depressed. I worry about it 24*7. I want to work as a software engineer only. I wanted to ask that is it too late to switch now and am i making the correct choice? Please help me sir I am very depressed.
Very subjective!! I had started off my career in late '90's.Overall 23+ years of experiences, had spent in a company in for 10.5 years, wherein had rather a stagnated tenure in legacy ERP, all the more due to my personal commitment neither could not have grown nor unskilled. During COVID and in my forties I was asked to resign and post that I was literally in roads. Current status do have a job, to 90's born kids take for granted, so called attitude - unlike when I was a fresher had respected even a year old senior salary lesser than 16 PA and grand finale self consolation at least I have job, can legally work for another 13 years next. So be it these '90 kids slavery. They will also grow old!!
I never understood the logic behind this rumour of software engineering being a dead end career after 40. Do people forget to code when they reach 40? Does their experience become completely invalid once they reach 40?? coding is not physical work that old age will reduce their efficiency. Every industry needs experienced people. It’s just that technology changes every 5-10 years, those who aren’t up to date with newer technologies will obviously get laid off. It’s just a rumour Indians have spread to scare off aspiring software engineers to reduce competition because literally everyone is switching to tech jobs. This is not at all the case in most developed countries, either they willingly resign or move to higher positions, age is not a factor for firing if you’re still talented. I asked my uncle (aged 52) working in core software engineering in USA and he laughed at this. It only seems to be an issue for Indians apparently. Everybody asking on quora, or other websites are all Indians as far as I can see. What I don’t understand is if the IT industry (the IT boom specifically) hasn’t even been here for longer than 20 years, how are people predicting the situation about forced early retirement? I doubt many have even experienced reaching 50 yet and they’re speaking for the future of 40+ year old engineers. Of course, a bias may be there. Like how companies prefer men over women for most posts. But that’s an entirely different issue.
you are wrong that you will save more as you earn more. Its not true for every talented engineer. As a successful and talented techie starts doubling salary, they will also spend more as most techies have great hobbies and increase their expense as their salary grow. if one wants to retire early, have to do remote job in small town and earn same salary as bangalore based techie remotely. Otherwise forget savings or early retirement.
Yaha toh 8-10 yr ka exp hua toh lead /mngr ki position kyu nahi ..yaha say suru hota hai issue banana .. aur US UK me toh 45- 50 yrs waley bhi sr dev / test kaam kar saktey ...
Hi Soumyajit, thanks for the video. I wanted to ask something.. I have 3.5 years of experience as a Salesforce developer. You are being so unrealistic talking about those salaries for SDE 1/2/3. I hav 13 yrs experience in this industry and I earn 35 lacs gross annually. Many of majority portion are in this range or still lesser. Not worth to visit this channel again. Try to be practical
This is practical in good product based companies. Please look at the market trends. Sde 2 salaries range in around 50+ to 80 lakhs per annum and sde 3 range in around 1.2 cr to 1.6 +cr per annum. We will gladly hire you at these ranges.
