I personally put race car driving in the same category as extreme sports, like mountain biking or rock climbing. It’s a normal activity made extreme, and in this case of race car driving the part made extreme is the speed. It probably isn’t as strenuous on the body as some other extreme sports, but I can imagine it takes a lot of mind-to-body coordination. That’s the foundation of what defines any given sport.

Imagine losing 3-4 kg every race and feeling Gs on a level most ppl have never felt, a slight tap on the back tyre by another car and you're into the wall with a 51G shunt and then calling it not a sport. If a guy is built well, but sucks at evry sport, is he still an athlete? I don't think athletes are all just how many pushups can you do

Fun fact ~ Moto GP (ie motorcycle racing) actually requires a lot physically, specifically to be able to remain on the vehicle while undergoing extraneous forces. Had to create a training program for a moto gp racer in my strength/conditioning course and it was wild to learn how strong someone needs to be to not get thrown off the bike when going that fast. With that being said, I’m not sure racing (ie with a car) takes nearly as much physically since you are stabilized and strapped into the vehicle, but I’m sure it still takes a lot of skill to be able to keep up

people think they know how to drive so then think well racing isnt as hard as an "actual" sport. but racing with cars, at very high speeds, takes so much concentration. u gotta know just where to turn in the curve so u dont flip ur car over or how to increase and decrease speed without using the brake as much because the brake makes u loose speed. gotta learn to have ur car drift with the road, u need very fast reflexes. cause at those speeds u gotta be thinking ahead of time especially with how dangerous it is

There's a list of items that makes f1 drivers athletes but here's a quick and easy one: It takes 280-320ft lbs of force to make the brakes of the car apply full braking pressure and often times f1 brakes need to hit a certain temperatures work correctly. Meaning full throttle to full brake almost every turn. And you only press the brake pedal with 1 foot. For like 2 and a half hours

Put a regular guy into an F1, or even an F3, and they wont last 2 laps before they either crash, poop their pants, or pass out. Even pushing the brake pedal takes immense (hundreds of pounds) of force. Not to mention keeping your head on top of your shoulders.

by definition golfing, curling, fishing and shit like that are sports by definition and so is racing they already had this debate years ago my grandpa kept up with it before he died and if i remember correctly it was declared a sport

Can’t imagine being an American and thinking golf is a sport but Motorsport isn’t, I think any competition that requires a ton of skill (mentally or physically) can be classified as a sport, even e-sports, their reaction time and precise aim isn’t just something any average human can do

I think the mental game IS a part of athleticism. Football and basketball players also need to be quick on their feet and able to react very quickly. Sports simply require "physical exertion". And an athlete is just good at sports.

I don’t understand why people think all sports have to be physically intensive. If it’s a physical game that requires physical skill and strategy, I’d say that’s a sport. Bowling is absolutely a sport, just as much as croquet or rugby or soccer or swimming. Some sports rely more heavily on the brain than others but I don’t see people separating swimming and football just because swimming is a lot more based on purely being physically conditioned. bet these are the same people who don’t think cheerleading is a sport. Anyways driving is definitely a sport.

Personally, an athlete is anyone who plays a sport, and a sport has to include mental skill, physical endurance, and competition. Ballet is a sport, short-distance track is not (no mental skill involved in 100 yd sprint, though I think long-distance running is a sport)
