A case of bad workman blaming their tools. Being miffed because the sat nav isn't picking a charger on a motorway when it's being told to avoid toll roads is a user issue!! I knew what was coming when they spent ages loading the boot without opening the massive compartment that would take two cases they were right yhe sat nav zooms out too much rhough .

For me, Flaviana is the patient one; always putting up with the cameras and gear while on holiday! Nice to see some real world experiences of these EVs. Many viewers will agree with the issues raised here, so thanks for providing an alternative to the relentless Tesla-positive views on RU-vid made by middle aged men (usually) who don't need to worry about practicalities. ❤

Hi Andrew, thanks for the great video, I really enjoyed it! Just one small remark: please consider a small Go-pro in stead of a mid size camera placed on the wind screen. In case of an accident a mid size camera could be dislodged and launched by the explosive force of the large airbag. A small Go-pro can be positioned in the top corner of the windscreen (outside the space of a deployed airbag). @@MrEV

I too am an Englishman, with an Italian wife, and now a (baby) daughter. Prior to la bambina, we made several road trips to see the Italian family in various ICE cars. Now we no longer live in a flat we can finally consider an EV, these videos have been extraordinarily helpful in informing the choice. I don’t have the desire for meticulous route planning via ABRP, for moglie a high level of automation was key. Tesla was a clear winner, so I’ve gone ahead and ordered the refreshed Model 3. Thank you Andrew for taking us along for the ride virtually, it really helped! P.s., fully agree with Flaviana’s summary of Trento wines 👌

I also usually have the same problem with stupid extra (not needed) supercharger stops… I think nowadays a bit better but still it would be so nice to have an advance mode option where you could tell you preferred “minimum percentage arrival” like ABRP instead of assuming that everyone is a newbie and is afraid of arriving with less than 10%/20%, I always target arriving with around 5% so I need to add every supercharger manually 😩 Just a little tip regarding unlocking the charge port at minute 40, keep the charger button pressed while pulling the cable handle, it will unlock. But it’s safe because it doesn’t unlock if the car itself is not unlocked… A tip for Fabiana, in supercharger stops you should use the hotel toilet that are always a lot cleaner and nicer than any motorway service station. When hotel accepts a supercharger their parking lot it basically accepts that people will use their toilet. On the other hand that earn money from everyone that stops and gets a coffee or a snack in the hotel bar. But I agree with Fabiana, some of them don’t have restaurant in walking distance which is annoying, in that case I usually pick up McDonald before going to charge and eat while charging. Very entertaining video like always 😂
@mikee6114

My suspicion is that the Tesla route planner takes into account how busy the supercharger locations are and tries to avoid you waiting at the busy ones.
@hmi1750
@hmi1750 8 месяцев назад
I found that arriving at destination with less than 20% charge where I then had to go looking for a charger after unloading. My family was not really ideal and so as manually, adding a supercharger stop before arriving at my destination so that at least I had enough charge to leave the car overnight and to be able to enjoy the location, the next day or two if I was staying longer. I got back from a seven hour journey with 19% charge thinking I’ll just park up in my driveway and relax, but as I live in a rental apartment and don’t have charging available,I was wrong. Ccar asked me to charge before it cooled down to avoid any issues

Agree that a head up turn by turn map would be far better. It’s like driving a beta test vehicle. At times nav didn’t speak up early enough. Resulted in a fair few wrong turns or getting lost.

I was on a walking holiday around the vineyards of Barolo & Roero in November. There were white wines made from the Nebbiolo grape but I did not come across any white wine called ‘Barolo’. There is a very nice rosé wine called ‘Langhe Rosato’ made from Nebbiolo grape by Cabutto family winery on the west slope vineyards of Barolo village. I can recommend it but I don’t think it can be called ‘Barolo’ even if grown in one of the 11 Barolo DOCG villages. Another great video by the way. Very glad I didn’t buy a Tesla even with the supercharger network & subsequent software improvements.

much anticipated video and certainly didn't disappoint, i will add one note that in almost all cases the supercharger locations situated at hotels, the hotels have to have agreed to allow tesla customers to use their on site facilities as part of the agreement to install charging stalls at that location, so never feel afraid us embarrassed to use the restaurant toilets etc. i await part 2

I have not seen if the 2024 model is more user friendly, but some people say you can do something similar with the phone app too - surely someone can make a video on it!
@stevev3142
@stevev3142 8 месяцев назад
The maps app does have voice navigation. For some reason it gets turned off sometimes or the volume gets turned down so low you can't hear it. Here are the instructions to enable the turn by turn voice navigation. Touch the navigation settings icon to customize the navigation system to suit your preferences (the available settings vary depending on your market region and vehicle configuration): Navigation Guidance: Touch Voice to enable an audible reading for navigation instructions. Touch - or + to increase or decrease the volume of spoken navigation instructions. Decreasing all the way to the left or touching the speaker icon mutes the instructions. You can also mute/unmute navigation instructions by touching the speaker icon. This volume setting applies only to the navigation system's spoken instructions. Volume for Media Player and Phone does not change. You do not need to charge until the battery range get to around 10 to 20 percent (although you can go very low 2 or 3 percent as you did). You can use the trip planner to select where you want to charge and generally 80 to 90 percent is all you need to get to your next charger. People speed too much time fixating on charging, with a little planning it becomes second nature and is not a big deal.

There are definately some quirks and some of what Flaviana says is justified, some of it is just getting used to it, like reading the speedometer. You can set it to beep if you go over the speed limit, but as you say, doesnt always read the roadsigns OR it reads a sign thats not on the road you are on. Maybe need to expermient with the height of seats. Most of the time it does tell you "In 500m turn left" in good time. Sometimes it doesnt (not figured out why yet). Finding Supercharges can be fun "now your destination is on your right" - what it means is, it was on the right when we produced the database. But its expanded and we've moved it somewhere else. . Yes, we have been through a car park (in Belgium) because it wasnt clear how to get to the chargers. All the supercharges that are in hotels you can use the hotel facilities. Never had a problem with them. I am always tempted to charge it more than it says its needed. You never know when there will be a diversion. It will always stop at whatever the limit is (I see it was set to 100% on yours), It will always recalculate destination charge and redirect to a nearer or further charger and it will recalculate on the move. Sometimes you have to convince it to recalculate. Like add your own supercharger stop or remove a supercharger stop. (dont need to remove them all - otherwise it may just redirect you backwards again) Personally dont trust the auto-pilot. Even on cruise control it gets spooked by vehicles that get close or are going slower and it might randomly brake. Not a fan. I hadnt realised you need a vignette for Austria. Good to know. Love the video. Great to get a different perspective on the car. Where to live? Yes, northern Italy, Southern France. Northern Spain? Loved Castellini in Chianti near Siena. Good Wines, Good times. I've got itchy feet now. Need to go traveling again. (and I havent seen Part 2 yet)

I love the "avoid toll" setting. There's some A roads in France that are beautiful to drive down. Sometimes only a bit slower, and far more scenic. The west coast has less tolls. Tolls can be as expensive as petrol per mile.

@rRekko
@rRekko 7 месяцев назад
@@1flash3571 agreed, that's what a road trip is about and the reason it is called "road trip" in the first place. On the other hand, i understand there are lots of people who don't really enjoy driving and don't like the views either, so they just want to get asap to wherever they're going and enjoy there, then asap back home to rest, which is one of the reasons why road trips for them are stressful. Also, on a side note, i learnt they don't have full self driving in EU due to regulations, so i feel their self-drive experience might not be good, especially for the ones who are too paranoid and are afraid the car is going to make mistakes at every corner, when in fact you just need to be aware of cones and lane change in 'regular self drive'.

Just a bit of feedback Firstly, I love the videos. They're fantastic! I've spent far too much time over the last week watching them. It would be very beneficial to have a breakdown at the end of the video that gave the details of length of time on charge, total cost of electric, average miles between charge and things like that. I started watching as I was interested in the e 208 and have ended up thinking of getting a Tesla So thank you, you've cost me about 15k

@MrEV 5 месяцев назад
Thanks, Paul! Ordinarily I would do that (as I have done with the Kia e-Niro, IONIQ 5, and e-208 trips) but annoyingly I didn't write down all the information on this Tesla trip! Sometimes I happened to film the screen showing the odometer and Supercharger cost, but I didn't do it enough to commit to showing it throughout the videos. There's two reasons for this, and it happens to be both a pro and a con! • Teslas hide away the info a bit! I'm so used to having efficiency/odometer on the dashboard so I always remember to take a picture • Teslas make the whole process so much easier, I completely forgot about doing my usual geeky charade! Part 2 of this journey should *finally* be coming this weekend by the way. 🤞

We did a trip from uk to Gibraltar last year in our model y long range. 3700 miles exploring on the way. Loved it and only £300 spent on charging at superchargers. Will be doing it again this year except to Italy 🇮🇹

Hello Andrew, I “stumbled across” your video, and as I’m not yet convinced about EVs, I wasn’t planning to watch it…… but I’m glad I did and thoroughly enjoyed it all, especially the “banter” between you and your wife. It was informative, entertaining, educational and great to see an honest, unbiased assessment in a real situation, compared to the “polar opposites” RU-vid normally “serve up” on this topic. One of the main reasons I’m currently unconvinced about EVS is the “charging away from home” bit, but watching your video I was incredibly impressed about how Tesla have sorted this out, it appears to be a lot better than all the other car manufacturers. That said, and as you pointed out, they do appear to be in some strange places and I wouldn’t want my daughter or my partner to be charging up on their own in locations like that - especially at night - especially in inclement weather. I’m really surprised that Tesla hasn’t got together with What3Words and integrated the system, especially because their charging points are often in “out of the way” locations. Mercedes have it included in their system (I have an E class estate) and it makes it very easy using that in voice activated mode to get to precise locations. Thanks for alerting me to BIP and GO, I’ll definitely be signing up for that for my forthcoming road trip to France later in the year and that will certainly make it a lot, less stressful and relaxing and that’s really what I want from a holiday, which is why I won’t be changing to an EV ….. just yet. On our last road trip to France (last year) we filled up at home and then drove 170 miles down to the tunnel, visited Brittany and Normandy over a three week period and the first time I even thought about fuel was when we returned to the UK some 900 miles later. I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to catching up on your Back Catalogue - Many thanks - Peter

Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, Tesla have got the public charging equation far more cracked than anyone else, although Polestar/Volvo/Renault also have very good route planners, albeit relying on mainly non-Tesla chargers which, in my experience, often tend to be better located. I'll be testing the Polestar 2 on a long journey in the coming weeks hopefully.

Skipped past the section when Flaviana started gutter-mouthing. Maybe it was the wine talking. Foul language makes a beautiful woman ugly. I don't mind her being volcanic; it's her trademark, and it's entertaining, but she could have expressed herself perfectly well without using offensive words. That said, thanks, Andrew, for your time and work in making the video.

It does sound like the ideal place for Flaviana to live is Madeira. Mountains and sea. You have to cope with the tides but there are safe places to bathe sheltered from currents and waves. If you get too hot or too cold you can just change altitude within an hour of driving. Very few insects. No dangerous animals except occasionally jellyfish in the form of Portuguese Man-o-War. Portuguese wine coming up in the world and a lot cheaper than equivalent quality from Italy. Property is getting expensive as many discovered it as a safe place during Covid and decided to buy property there. Still a lot cheaper than UK if you are happy to live away from the capital. There were many more EVs when we were there before Christmas, but charging networks still pretty primitive. However a home charger would mean you would probably never need to use a public charger. Battery degradation a problem because of constant discharging / charging up and down the hills. A friend of ours killed his Nissan Leaf battery in 1 year and I guess the battery warranties are different there.

Andrew and the ‘no BS wife’. Great video. We have a model Y and a goldendoodle and are planning a 3 month trip in Spain. Your video was a perfect tutorial to get us organised. Like Flaviana, my wife hates Tesla. Like Flaviana my wife says it the way it is which gets me in trouble. Thanks for some amazing insights.

First happy New Year to Flaviana, your good self and family. Great Video as usual, Andrew, don't always agree with Flaviana, but she sure makes an entertaining video 🤣. I have to agree the Navigation isn't the best (mainly because it lacks customisation and configurable options) but it certainly isn't any worse than google, waze or the crapple maps (I use another nav app, much better than all of them in my opinion and its free). Although the Nav on my new M3HSR (My very first EV) does tell me at around 2 km and then again well before a turn off and shows the turn off number etc, It does auto zoom but not enough to be really clear and yes it does not help that it is on the right hand side of the screen (lefthand drive) wish one could make it go to the left hand side that would make it so much better (and is where I would normally have my phone), but having said that i have managed without a problem navigating with it all the way from Valencia, through Portugal and now in Malaga just a case of getting used to it, like anything new. The speed being in the top lefthand corner, I haven't found to be any problem at all. All superchargers we have stopped at in Spain and Portugal so far, have had toilets and have been able to eat. Must say I absolutely love the nav being able to put a destination in and it plans every thing and takes you straight to the superchargers, no more, in a place you do not know, trying to find a petrol station on the way and yes we used an app for that. Before I bought this car i investigated and test drove all EV's that was within the price I was prepared to pay for an EV and the best liked, at least 3 times, and even though I only test drove the old M3 (4 times). In our opinion it was BY FAR the best value for money and I was pretty sure (when we ordered) that we would be delivered the M3 highland, which so the internet said was supposed to be much better. IT IS, by a long chalk, comfortable, quiet and fun. Is it perfect, nope, there are things I would design differently (some i mention above) if i had the brief. But there were lots of things we didn't like in the other cars as well. We love our new M3HSR, (especially in the ultra red with white interior) I cannot say that about any other car I have owned up till now. We have been asked about it in so many places and so far now 3 people have asked me is it a ferrari with one young lad shouting out, "look! Dad, its a ferrari" and we have only had it 7 weeks and 3500 km 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hahah that moment when you went through the austrian customs section in the left lane.. brings back memories.. we drove through last year and got stuck in right lane without any clue what to do.. this person walked up to window and took a 40 chf charge, gave us a sticker. by absolute chance we got the required sticker to drive in austria.. no signs, no clear indication.. :)

As a model 3 owner. When i went in for a service they did a "rear power liftgate o-ring" Guess they know the part fails after a year so in France were proactively fixing at supercharges then noting which VIN has been fixed. Tesla service is excellent in UK and Europe too it seems!
@15bit62
@15bit62 8 месяцев назад
I don't think the early ones actually had an O-Ring. I had 2 power struts fail completely on me, and then after the second one they additionally came and did an O-ring replacement. I've actually not been at all impressed by my local Service Centre here in central Norway. But Tesla Milton Keynes were very good about fixing the screw-ups of local SC when i was in the UK this summer. These things are very location- and people- dependent.

Great video and agree with Flaviana’s comments re Tesla. The best thing they did was to open up (some of) their SuC network to non-Tesla cars. My one-hour long test of a Model Y was enough to put me off the brand straight away. Love the road-trip videos, regardless of the car you’re using 👍🏼

We used a model Y in California this umber for 2 weeks. I 100% agree about the screen location, and a hud would fix most of the issues. Navigating was fine, as we had voice and the screen. However, a passenger is very handy to watch the screen too. Charging was a breeze. The air conditioning system was excellent. Space is great too, including especially the under boot space. Back screen is small. The autopilot was good for speed management, but the steering was very much a beta test stage.

I know about the vignette scheme from driving to Austria to go skiing, but we usually ignored the Zoll place as you enter from Germany as it was always super busy, we just stopped at the next petrol station instead. And yes, Marche was our favourite rest stop in Germany, we always used the one near Hünxe on our way home from Rotterdam back to Bielefeld.

I can't understand the criticism of the supercharge, that you can't eat or drink where you are. I have a Model 3 for 5 years. I traveled to Italy twice without any issue. Even some of those locations are super nice and much cheaper and relaxing (not always of course), not the overcharged prices they got at the gasstation. In 5 years I only had 1 or 2 location I couldn't do anything but just charging.

Just did my first road trip to the French alps in a Model Y. Never used a Tesla supercharger as these are usually located off the highway in shopping malls/hotels, etc. I found that every gas station along the route has high speeds chargers (Total Energies, IONITY, Fastned, etc). Way faster and more convenient. Charging really isn’t a problem.

It’s certainly the more comfortable car. There are pros and cons to both in terms of charging. Arguably less effort involved with the Tesla since there are so many Superchargers everywhere, although IONIQ 5 charges faster. Part 2 will put the Tesla in a more favourable light!

Great road trip video. Like you I find the lack of HUD or just a speedo display in M3 and MY a real problem and in my mind it’s a safety issue, not only for those with good eyesight, but in the U.K. approx. 75% of people wear glasses and it’s near impossible to concentrate on the road ahead if you constantly have to look at the center of the car at small speedo digits. Those with glasses find it even harder as they can’t or don’t have good peripheral vision. It’s high time this was quashed as I see Volvo EX30 has gone this route also. The Ioniq 5 wins with a HUD and maybe Flaviana’s other thing was she liked the relaxation seats. We moved from Jaguar I-pace on Pivotal subscription after 2.5 years to Ioniq 5 from Mocean subscription mainly for faster charging/newer technology, but did love the Jag. Still have a Zoe from Onto also after 2 years.
