I think everyone is failing to realize that it was only *day one* of *free agency*. We have so much more of the off-season for changes to happen. From later signings to trades where we need cap space - give it time
Signing older players to term would have really hamstrung the team at the time when they’re ideally in their cup window in 3-5 yrs. There are better options in the trade market.
@esprout19 yeah why the fuck is he bringing up stanley cup contention? the goal is to get steadily better until we have our young guys up with the team on cheap deals and then spring big in free agency. if they bothered to do an ounce of research they'd realize that's in 2 years. Yzerman has been insanely deliberate with his contracts but they don't understand because they don't give a shit about hockey. the expectation next year is playoffs, not stanley cup. even if we get dumped in 5 games, that's still a good season. in 2 years we have a colossal amount of money coming off the books and also several young players timelines matching up with that. valenti is just lazy at this point in his career.
Down 45 goals losing Perron, Sprong & Ghost. Maybe you get an additional 5 from Kane playing 70+ games. So now you need 40+ from Gustafsson and whichever 2 rookies you choose between Berggren, Mazur, Danielson & Kasper,
The Red Wings don't need to make any huge splashy free agent sigining until they are in a position to go deep in the playoffs. Before you can be ready for a deep playoff run you have to make the playoffs. Signing Stamkos to a 4x8 might help in the short term, but he will be retired before the team is ready to actually win a Cup. A huge signing right now is a bandaid on a stab wound. The things you guys are suggesting are akin to what Ken Holland was doing that left the Wings with first round exits and a nearly 10 year slump. I dont think the Yzerplan has been perfect, but it's been more good than bad and they get closer every year while teams Ottawa and Buffalo are still making top ten picks.
FA signings were abysmal . Barring some big trades we moved further away... A long shot that Berggren and Edvinsson will outperform expectations this season and bring us closer.
I don’t understand all of you getting so upset about something you don’t even try or care to understand. What moves exactly did you want him to make? Do you grasp the disaster of a roster we had 5 years ago? Do you see how we’ve improved every year while building the best prospect pool in the league? Do you know most prospects take a few years to develop and all of ours are on pace? The Yzerplan was always going to take time, the market this offseason was atrocious. He wanted to add more high end players but it wasn’t in the cards. You can be disappointed in it, I sure am, but relax everything is fine
I mean statistically Cam Talbot was better than John Gibson, so I'm not ecstatic, but it's alright to me i guess. Plus after signing Jack Campbell, it appears that maybe Husso may be traded. I think they will keep Lyon as the "backup" and just kinda tandem with Talbot and Lyon and Campbell will be the 3rd string goalie. But I'm more worried about our defense also, we need a big upgrade in our defense and have to get rid of Petry and Chiarot somehow.
they did not have $32m in cap. for the love of god learn how this shit works. $16m of that is set aside for Seider/Raymond another $2-4m is set aside for berggren and veleno they had multiple other roster spots to fill (e.g. Christian Fischer, Gustafsson) Roy and Skinner and maybe even the ghost deal are the only deals that look like misses today. if you really wanted the wings to be paying: stamkos, marchessault, montour, etc huge aav and huge term until theyre near or at 40 you need to stop talking about hockey. no, im not a 'stevebot' hes made a handful of flubs (mainly last years FA period, goalie situation in general) at the same time, Cat didnt get traded until mid july. the offseason isnt nearly over. pinto, necas, and trouba could all be moved by october.

If these are the only moves Yzerman makes this offseason I think the Wings are missing the playoffs again. They didn’t improve and they actually look a little worse on paper now
they got better on defense and better in goal. only got worse on the PP really. bergrenn replaces sprong, gus replaces ghost, and perron was terrible after the first 20 games of the season and so was walman. seider will be better, Larkin hopefully won't be injured, Raymond will be better. idk how you can say we got worse.

I won’t argue about Perron being terrible last season, not mad about him or Gost leaving. Not sure about Gustafsson being much of an improvement, he’s a 2nd or 3rd pairing dman at best and scored 3 goals last season, not really a replacement for Gost’s goal scoring or production on the PP even if he’s a little better defensively. Imagine what a dman like Montour would have added to the blueline, but no, Yzerman is putting so much faith into rookies like Johansson instead. It’s good the young guys will get some playing time but they will still be raw and make lots of mistakes. I hope it works out but i’m skeptical.
@@OFDProductions which teams got so much better? Not ottowa, not Montreal, not buffalo, not Boston, not Toronto, not florida. New Jersey getting Markstrom is the only team in division that got significantly better. Tampa got jake but lost stamkos, so I'd call that marginal as well. We are banking on guys on the team getting better. if seider, Raymond, edvinson, and debrincat don't all have better seasons this year then we are kinda fucked one way or another since those are the guys we will need to be carrying the team whether we sign splashy names or not

Also Toronto did get better, signing OEL and Tanev. We can joke about how Toronto always chokes in the playoffs but they are still better than the Wings rn especially when they added legit veteran dmen. Oh and Washington added Chychrun, and NJ got Pesce, so yeah plenty of teams in the East improved while the Wings didn’t. Another 5th place finish in the division at best incoming for this team, at worst I could see them finishing 7th or 8th.
@OFDProductions Boston lost debrusk and ullmark as well. their old guys are even older. they got a lot worse last year compared to the year before and will probably be worse again this next year. OEL replaces Bert so that's a wash. Tanev is old and can't stay healthy. Washington isn't in division but I agree they got better and the devils got better. carolina got worse isles will be worse. I just don't think it's fair to say so many teams git better and the Wings didn't without acknowledging that some got worse too.

A part of me wouldn't be surprised if Chris I is limiting how much $ Yzerman is allowed to spend. Ownership doesn't want to do anything meaningful except put a subpar product in LCA and Comerica and not actually win anything. Chris I needs to sell both teams yesterday
Honestly, after looking the the AAV and terms of some of these contracts, I’m happy Yzerman really didn’t sign anybody. Gustafsson is an upgrade over Walman and Talbot is an upgrade over Reimer. Is it great? No. But I’m okay with this.
Wings need to make the playoffs for Kane to get all the incentives. Not looking great right now. Yzerman hoping to get Draisaitl next year? Lots of moves can still be made. Better to be in buyers market position than having to try and sell like they already are now with a few contracts.
The only way that Walman fiasco was going to be forgivable was if it was necessary to get an impact player in free agency. Aparently, he should have just waived Walman and saved the 2nd round pick. Or tried to trade Walman for someone of value. I have finally lost faith in Stevie Y. That said, looking at the contracts that were being handed out for the good players, it's probably inevitable that nothing could be done. Should have been able to bring Ghost back though.
You're in the wrong if you think that even signing a couple big names would give us a deep playoff run. Also you didn't have 32 mil you had 16mil Sieder/Raymond eat up the next 16 mil. Also you say you have a life, this is your job to know detroit sports so do some research

He got 8 mill for 4 years.. The only contracts, that were worth it. Was the Marchessault, Guentzal, and Ekman Larson contracts. Still those are a bit high. You don't have to be thrilled Mike. The NHL is not the NFL you cannot rebuild a franchise in 3 years or even 6 years it's not impossible but VERY unlikely. Steve's said numerous times he wants to build this team for longterm success and through the draft. Hockey players are drafted at 18 years old and often times dont make the league for usually 3 years at least unless you're a superstar. We have to re-sign Seider and Raymond longterm which will likely take up half the cap space. If Steve didn't pay a couple of 35 year old for 3+ years and 6+ million I'm fine with not having more of those contracts unless they were for the big name guys but we didnt need to, and there's still 2 months of moves he could make rather then spending all of our cap space in one day. You guys are getting real hard to listen too when all you do is act like you know how to run the team better then a guy who drafted guys like Kucherov, Point, Cirelli, Andrei Vaselevsky, etc. On Tampa. First of all, the Rebuild has been going on for 3 years. The first 2 years were clearing all the bad contracts. No real first rounds picks after Larkin till Moe. And last there was no 32 mill in space. Moe and Lucas will eat 16 to 18 of that money. Let the young guys learn, we do not have the money to get a superstar to lift this team. Next year will be the year to load.

Lolonde almost made the playoffs in his first year soooooo. Maybe judge his performance on a tad more information lol the first half of the season we were among the highest scoring teams. #1 for a few months actually

@@alanmiller8889 not really. they dont hand out long term to D men over 32 and Fs over 30. kind of been SYs MO since tampa. chiarot - 4yrs starting @ 30 Compher - 5yrs starting @ 28 copp - 5yrs starting @ 27 holl - 3yrs starting @ 31 maata - 2yrs starting @ 28 stamkos, marchessault, skej, montour will all be 39/40 when their deals are over. these contracts historically age extremely poorly as the drop off in hockey is swift after about 29/30 for forwards and 32/33 for d men, even for elite players.
Ive about lost all faith in the Yzerplan. He makes the dumbest trade Ive ever seen getting rid of Walman, then completely strikes out in free agency. I would've had no problem offering the same contract to Stamkos that Nashville did. No, instead we're stuck with the corpse of Copp and still not a goal scorer to be seen. We went into this offseason with 32 million in cap space and we got worse. How in the world is that even possible? Unless there's multiple big trades coming down the pipeline, this is an absolute failure of an offseason and when we fail to make the playoffs again next season, it will be time to move on from the Yzerplan.
1. Ghost was horrible on D and Perron couldnt skate anymore...so in my humble opinion those were addition by subtraction. 2. Talbot is an upgrade based solely on how bad the existing goaltending is, unfortunately. 3. The only achilles heel for Yzerman has been his horrific signings in free agency, i think he has wiffed on every D he has signed...Maata, Chariot, Petry, Holl...you really cant get any worse than that group. 4. Copp is cancer. 5. Lalonde should have been fired...he is in over his head for his first head coaching job. Horrible coach and way too low energy...LGRW.

Yzerman is doing it the right back despite the painful wait. It has to be done this way. Edvinnson will 100% be up. Berggren will 100% be up. And Danielson or Kapser will 70% be up. Mazur or Johanson have a shot, too. The goalie situation is awfully confusing, though, I will admit.
