Ration meter for the crew effects crew happiness. If it drops too low the maneuverability, and speed, of the ships drops, including in battle. It will also make mates that don't like you steal a ship. The round earth society is a way to increase your luck. You have to donate about 51% of your wealth (including what's in the bank) to increase your luck 1 point I believe. I can't recall exactly what it was to max out but I believe the minimum amount to trigger it was 6 gold. IIRC it takes something like 8 doublings to guarantee max fortune so around 1,600 gold, but it can take more. The best thing to do is buy up tons of silver, carpet, art, or gold, fully load your ships with food then start donating 51% repeatedly with what's left, ideally enough to finish in one shot. It is a hidden stat, the only way to check it is to go to the fortune teller and ask her to read your fortune. She'll say different things based on your luck stat. You want "What a strong fortune, you have nothing to fear in this life." That's 100% then you study to maintain it. Luck increases odds of getting the best cannons, and figureheads, at the secret shipyards that sell them, when fully upgraded and aligned with you. Cannons are self explanatory and the figureheads ward off storms and creatures. It also improves outcomes in duels, mates liking you and tile against them leaving you. Never put a mate with bad luck in charge of a ship (they drown in storms and you lose the ship) or let them navigate/negotiate. You can't increase their luck.

Agreed. Would love a Stardew type updated version of this with the dueling system from this more or less the same. Improved ship combat and customization. The current multiplayer online thing does nothing for me like this gem did. Hated the hurricanes though and if you fail game over. I also like PTO 2 also made by KOEI.

i keep thinking if I ever get my code game up, I would love to make something that built off this; I'm always surprised UW Online has been running so long, but they won't revisit a single player game? I bought this "random" game at a GameStop in the mid-90s at our local mall from the bargain bin for just $5 on a whim. I am so glad that I did since it is such an amazing game and is literally the best $5 I have ever spent in my life. I remember me, my brother, and my sister playing this game for hundreds of hours learning all about geography, ships, navigation, history, commerce and overall just the world in general. Such fond memories and I am so thankful for everything. :)

Nice review. New Horizons is so damn good. Just a brilliant game and one of the best things Koei ever did. Awesome to see you give it justice in this review. The game series is known in Japan as Daikoukai Jidai, and the later sequels after New Horizons were never released outside Japan until the Uncharted Waters Online MMO which got released worldwide in 2011. I remember the PC versions of the first two games though. Edit: There is a new game in the series called Uncharted Waters Origin, which was released worldwide days ago, and was released for Steam, iOS and Android, made by Motif and published by LINE Games, officially licensed by Koei Tecmo, and made for the 30th anniversary of the Daikoukai Jidai series, apparently.

As a kid my mother always jokingly threatened to kick my butt to Timbuktu, which I dismissed as a made up word. When I eventually played this game in my pre-teen years I learned it is absolutely a real place and exactly where it is. Koei was my favourite company back in 90s and this game is one of their best, and probably the one that actually holds up best today.

Being Portuguese, and a João, it amazes and baffles me that this game exists, one about sea exploration at that. It's absolutely surreal. It took the japanese to create a video game very slightly based in history and about an otherwise very ignored country 😂 (And then expanded to the rest of the countries involved in international sea trading at the time)

This game is my favorite SNES game of all times and I made sure it was my first purchase when I started rebuilding my collection. The ration system does work and it changes how pleased/displeased your crew is and prolongs the depletion of your food and/or water. If your crew is not very happy they are more likely to both die and leave when you discover artifacts and animals while exploring villages. If you let them get waaay too displeased, the will mutiny which sucks. The round earth society is a little bit weird, but in order to unlock the rare "luck"-based figureheads and cannons you need to have donated a significant amount to them - not sure exactly how it works though. Also, I read somewhere that donating to them decreases the chances of running into fog and/or sea witches etc. not sure if this is true though.

I recently beat the original again for the first time in 20 years. I chose the Genesis version. It's the one I grew up with, but I thought the graphics, colors, and sound were better. 2:10 What difference does setting stats make? Keep rolling, and you'll get an exceptional roll, and have a crap ton of extra points to distribute. You can get 100+ unallocated points to distribute or more. There is a similar roll process in a few of the Wizardry games, where you can roll enough points to get an elite character (eg, samurai, ninja, lord) when creating your starting party.

The crew rations is rather simple -- you can reduce rations to save food for longer voyages, but it slowly degrades the crew's health/strength. Say for example, you've got a ship and crew that uses 5 food per day, you can cut rations by 20% and use 4 food per day, but you'll notice if you bring up the L/R buttons while sailing that the crew's health% starts degrading each day.

As someone who's let's played both games, I'm glad you gave this series some attention, and treated it fairly. Yeah, the first game was definitely very bland and not particularly well presented. Everything worked, and when you understood everything, it went smoothly enough, but getting there was way too hard for most folks. The second game got it right. Still had a learning curve, but it wasn't as steep as the first game (except for the trading mechanics), and it was way more fun to learn to play. Great stuff. Looking forward to going through some of your other videos.

I was fortunate to play the original UW with my mother and grandfather when I was a kid. My grandfather knew almost everything about the game so I didn't have to worry about esoteric stat values. He also had some helpful advice, such as "If you sail to africa during the winter months you'll rarely encounter a storm, if ever" After watching this video just now...I understand why people would be turned off by the original, especially with the lack of detailed info in-game.

Gotta let people know, the noob start that always kills the game. People tend to die immediately when they depart at sea till they give up the game and think the game is bug. If they didn't realize they need to stock up food and water. That happened to me 30 years ago when I first played t the game. Then years later I finally try the game again and learnt how to play properly. That's where the fun starts.

I remembered playing this game back in the 90s and it was great. Used to do a lot of trading for gold and then dump it to the bank at the end of the month to get the interest and buy ships then go explore for treasures for more money. I don't think I would have the same time or patience to play through this game anymore though.

New Horizons is definitely worth it. It's a game that sits proudly in my collection. It does feel like there is a bit too much depth in there, so it's a game that you have to really be willing to sink time into in order to feel like you know what's going on. Which makes things like playing Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, or Mega Man X very appealing in comparison to our simple, lizard brains. "Go right, kill bad guys, don't die!" Nothing wrong with that format of game at all, of course, which is why it's so appealing, but sometimes it's nice to invest some time and really get lost in a deep game. Great video as always.

My strategy was to go to Lubeck and stock up on silver, sell it all in East Africa and invest until they sell gold (fun fact: the “gold” commodity was actually “slaves” in the original version. Changed for obvious reasons). It doesn’t take much investment. Fill up on gold, sail to Japan, sell the gold, restock on silver, return to East Africa, sell the silver, fill up on gold, return to Lubeck. Repeat. You’ll have a fleet of Tekkosen and Full-Rigged ships in no time. I even had a bunch of ships stored at every capital. Copper hulled La Reales for max speed, or barges/frigates for max capacity. To make it fair once my guys had ridiculous combat levels, I’d sometimes sail a fleet of sloops or even light galleys. Side note: the “Round Earth Society” is used to raise your hidden luck stat. Donating 51% of your gold on hand will raise your luck by 1 level. It’s obviously better to do this when you’re relatively poor. Like “slaves” being changed to “gold” the Round Earth Society was simply the “Church” in the original version.

If I remember correctly, studying at The Round Earth Society increased a player's luck stats. It was a fill-in for a church/mosque, with studying being analogous to praying, that probably allowed KOEI to follow Nintendo's rule on avoiding religious imagery while staying true to the theme of a game set in the Age of Exploration.

Thanks for the guidance in your final words. I've tried Gemfire and the earlier Nobunaga games before and just couldn't get into them. They are exactly like you said, very dry, I always imagined those as the sort of games an old man would play while his model trains tooted along in the background.

Gemfire is an excellent game and nobunaga is probably good too, but those Japanese names get me confused and discouraged to play

Just finished the Franco storyline, Hardest imo... greatest game of all time... from the music to the characters. One day maybe someone will build something from its bones and we can all get our fix.

Yes, KOEI games like this, Gemfire, etc. age well because the art and music are top notch. They'll always be worth looking into because of that. The game mechanics and enemy AI weren't always that great even when they came out, but they're expansive enough to give you a lot of gameplay options and make you feel like you're in control. The fact that they're strongly character based gives the games a lot more personality than other games in the genre where you are just moving around faceless, generic units. New Horizons is the game where everything KOEI wanted to do came together. It's maybe the only game that successfully melded classic RPG and turn based strategy genres.

I still remember being like 12 and sinking countless hours into Uncharted Waters: New Horizons. I pretty well had no clue what I was doing at first but after a few dozens hours I somehow managed to figure it out. I look back on it fondly

0:15 Is it just me or is Aerobiz's boxart bloody amazing? Though, if I saw that on the shelf as a kid I'd be like "why is this a game"? But I have a game called Aeroporter on my 3DS so the idea of a game that I'm guessing has to do with airports isn't so crazy an idea to me anymore.

Best sword in the game was the bluecrescent you may get that in japan but timbuktu had something food. it was a long river ride? hard to say map so big and all that trading, I pirated and bought cannons mad crew on the galley because you board them after the grape shot?

This game was just amazing. I played it when I was a kid. I couldn't find a copy of it anywhere for sale. Just one at the video story I would rent every weekend. Anyone know a good emulator for it? I had one but it kept crashing.

SNES9X is probably still the best one for being accurate and simple. ZSNES is probably still the most popular one. I haven't kept up though.

Yo, if you guys like these games (RPG plus Sailing-Trade Simulator), then you might be interested in an upcoming indie game, Paper-Soul Theater! It takes place on land, so there is no sailing, but otherwise it seems similar. It's gonna be a character-driven game in which you play as a traveling merchant. The battle system mixes action with turn-taking, and is like a cross between old-school RPGs and Tactic RPGs. Most bizarre of all is that it doubles as a horror game! It's worth keeping an eye on and I hope SNES Drunk plays it on his SteamDrunk series one day since he likes retro RPGs.

My GF is huge into horror stuff, new and old. She's playing through Evil Within 2 right now. I like some of it like Silent Hill 2 but it's not usually something I'm that into.

New Horizons and Brandish were the only Koei games I used to rent. Inindo's not bad either. Beyond those games, it's much harder to get into the SNES Koei library. New Horizons is definitely the best of the bunch and easiest to get into, IMO. Great video.

Hm, actually I have not. While I've played several of the historical Japanese war sims, I tend to steer clear of Civil War games. I hope you find it soon and hope it's good!

Speaking of which, the first Koei game I ever played was the NES version of Genghis Khan in 1989 as a Blockbuster Video game rental. When I found the SNES Koei game Genghis Khan II, I nearly lost mind. Went right out and bought a used version in 1993. That one's even better than the first one.
