I was in Chile last August and that is so true. There are so many different words and expressions. It is certainly not the place to go to learn standard, neutral Latin American Spanish. The people are very nice although I did get pickpocketed in the metro a few hours before my flight home--could have happened anywhere but it soured me on Chile.

A lot of the original European colonists of Argentinian were Italians. They had an influence on the way Spanish is spoken in Argentina. Argentinians tend to stress the last vowel of the word which gives it an "Italian" sound. The "LL" is pronounced is pronounced as "y" in most of South America whereas Argentinians pronounce the "LL" sound as "zh" or "sh" depending on the the region.

@Nicholas Major dude, no need to get upset, Mexican spanish in North America is the defacto dialect for Spanish learners in the US and Canada, so it'd be reasonable to suggest that other dialects of Spanish would sound like different languages to them. In my personal experience, many of my Mexican friends would confuse British English for French whenever they saw me watching a British RU-vidr. Hell, sometimes I'd speak Portuguese to my Brazilian friends on the phone and some people thought I was speaking Russian.

For Mexico's accent it depends on the state you are, some states have a really clean accent... but others... Let's just leave it in that the country agrees that the CDMX (Mexico City) accent is the most neutral and clean accent among all.

Why not compare your Brazilian Portuguese accent to the Portuguese spoken in Portugal or the Azores Islands of Portugal and the Portuguese spoken in some African countries?

@@hanna3684 It is better to call it European Spanish or Castilian Spanish rather "Spain Spanish", which sounds clumsy and is not its correct name. Where are you from? If you are in Europe Castilian Spanish is what you'll hear spoken, if you are in North America the Mexican version is probably the best choice as what is generally spoken there. There are other versions too such as Argentinian Spanish.

Oh my goodness, there are lots of differences. I went to a French school in Canada where we learned a more Quebec version of French. However, I have French friends, and I also lived in France for quite some time, so my dialect in French is more of a France dialect. The two major differences that I've noticed are: accent + vocabulary. Obviously I can only go in so much detail in the comments of a RU-vid video, but it's a fascinating subject! I'd highly recommend you look it up :D

I was born in Vegas too! I think In Vegas they mostly teach Mexican Spanish since it used to be a Mexican state or because there’s more Mexicans there.

Carolyn Yup, the English they speak is a patois. I agree with you there. However, I would say that the accent of the Spanish spoken in those parts reminds me of Spanish spoken on the Caribbean coasts of other Central America, like Panamá (Bocas del Toro, etc).

Buenos Aires accents are known for sounding very Italian. So if she's from Buenos Aires she'll have an accent that sounds like she's from Italy. Perhaps this is what you are hearing

bueno yo me entiendo super bien con personas de otros paises. Y soy chileno es solo hablar un poco mas lento y mas alto porque que los chilenos aparte de hablar rapido hablamos bajo comparadocon otros países. Los modismos son tema aparte cada país tiene los suyos.

Inside of Spain there are many accents. Actually, Spain is the Spanish speaking country with more different accents. The accent shown in the video is a very neutral one (could be Castilian, Catalan, Aragonese, Basque...). But in Southern Spain and the Canary Islands people sound really really different. Actually, many Latin American accents like those from the Caribbean, Chile and Argentina come from these Southern Spanish accents. So yeah, a neutral Spanish accent does sound "formal" and "correct", but in the south people speak quicker and drop many letters like "s/z/r/etc.", among other things. For instance, a person from the north and center of Spain would say "voy a hablar con esos niños que están allí", but an Andalusian would say instead "vía blá con esoh niñoh quehtán allí".

You got that right. Except for the southern spanish accents, european spanish is much more rigid and can even sound harsh or agressive. Latin american accents are softer, more fluid, and they tend to put an emphasis on vowels which makes them a lot more musical.

BlueOrangeOiler for me, lapicero is a pencil holder. We say lapiz de tinta o de carbon for pen or pencil respectively. Pluma = feather. People probably started using that word when quill pens were around.

It´s just a bit harder, mostly for english speaking people, cos neither english or american spanish uses the "C" sound, they both use the S sound for all C, S, Z...

We just use stronger consonants and syllabels.

No, it's not the hardest to learn, but it may be harder to pronounce for someone whose first language is not spanish, cause they have a very unique pronunciation: for the c, s and z cause the sound like C.

it's harder to pronounce if you're learning but it helps with the spelling, because you can tell the difference between S and C/Z
