Sean Carroll is a theoretical physicist, specializing in quantum mechanics, gravitation, cosmology, statistical mechanics, and foundations of physics. Sean Carroll and John Michael Godier spoke about the many worlds theory. The multiverse theory was also explained and discussed. And how it all related to Sean Carroll’s new book ‘Something Deeply Hidden’.

If it's me, they have a similar mind to me. Maybe they recognized how wrong I am. If they don't have a similar mind or philosophy to me, they're not me. It doesn't matter if they share my rugged good looks. Thanks for ruining many-worlds interpretation for me, Descartes. Thus: Alternate JMG could be a mad scientist, but if alternate JMG isn't interested in science, is it truly JMG? It was disconcerting at first, but I have to admit my (psuedo?) consciousness wave-function is more similar to Lady Gorthemel the science squid than Curry Tangent the world-class ping-pong player.

By avoiding the Quantum Suicide issue, Sean is avoiding the big reveal! We're all playing it just by living our lives. As we get older, only versions that didn't die will still be around. If Dr. Carroll’s many worlds theory is correct, my question is why? What purpose would it serve to have the universe create a whole new copy of itself for each of the gazillion quantum events that happen every second on Earth, not to mention the entire cosmos? Then You would assume each of these new worlds does the same thing. The exponential growth rate of new worlds would approach infinity pretty quickly. Seems like an extremely inefficient and complicated way to design reality. Occam’s Razor would favor the simpler One World interpretation, which is complicated enough that we don’t fully understand it.

giggles..."Are There Many Worlds"? Of course there are many worlds. We have many worlds even located within our own solar system. One "non-literal" definition of a world ist still a planet correct? Not to mention the many dimensions of microbial as well seemingly infinite larger scale environments we designate as worlds, und the gazillion other physical & psychological constructs we reference as such. :-)

you're telling me there's a version of myself that's not living in poverty? well that's good to know... could the many worlds theory actually ever be proven? correct me if i'm wrong, but could you possibly gain evidence, when gathering evidence by itself only ever describes your world? i have that weird feeling, that we need to go deeper into the microcosmos to find more clues..who knows what kind of "spooky" things happen closer to the planck scale..

@deusexaethera
@deusexaethera 4 года назад
It puzzles me why anyone has trouble with the "many worlds" version of quantum mechanics. During every Planck Interval, every existent timeline branches according to the number of particles in the universe raised to the power of every possible interaction between any of those particles during that Planck Interval. That is an incomprehensibly large number of timelines, but it is nonetheless a finite number.
@bmoneybby
@bmoneybby 4 года назад
My thoughts as well.
@deusexaethera
@deusexaethera 4 года назад
...alternately, if the universe is infinite then the number of branches during each Planck Interval would also be infinite, but it would be in the context of a universe wherein infinity can physically exist, so Many Worlds would still not be a problem. Anyway, there's no reason for anyone to waste their brainpower trying to comprehend those alternate universes because they are completely inaccessible to us -- unless-and-until we find some way to hop between them, at which point they would no longer be _alternate_ universes anyway due to having been causally re-joined by human tinkering.

I will generally listen to any lecture or interview by or with Sean Carroll, but it is really unscientific when scientists say they "believe" one theory over another when there is absolutely nothing tangible to back it up. "belief" is the stuff of faith, not science. I realize that, as in the rest of society, many feel a need to "choose a tribe" and defend it to the death, but that's not what science should be about, and it's not how science is going to move forward.

@TheRainHarvester 5 лет назад
I do think we need proponent scientist agents to fight for their ideas....but only until they are shown to be inconsistent...then their theory needs to adapt, or show why it's not actually inconsistent. Then again, if we did that strictly, we wouldn't have our multiple models of light that serve their purposes.
@sergioortiz8219
@sergioortiz8219 5 лет назад
@@TheRainHarvester I don't know... We're human beings and I understand the need to believe in something to keep you going, but in this regard, I prefer Neil Tyson's approach (if not his personality). He will tell you outright that he's agnostic about things that scientists should be agnostic about simply because all the facts aren't in yet, whereas Carroll will tell you almost as a matter of fact that many worlds exist.

part three Alas, to this day, none of these bold branches of quantum gravity or string theory has succeeded in merging General Relativity with Quantum Theory. The number of papers that has been written on these ideas, especially string theory, is quite staggering… yet no one has yet succeeded in creating either fully self-consistent mathematical frameworks or meaningful experimental predictions. Ouch! So why so why has all of this not worked? The easiest answer is that the approach was imply wrong: Gravity is not an ant-swarm force after all, and simply cannot be modeled correctly that way. Somehow, in some fashion we still do not understand, it really is a spring-like topological force that is outside of, and in some fashion even more fundamental, than all of the ant-swarm forces that exist on top of spacetime. Did you notice how I just phrased that? I am trying to suggest a possibility of why gravity cannot be modeled as an ant-swarm force, and the hint is remarkably simple: Even if you finally figure out a clever way to define a gravity-like quantum force carried by gravitons, that allows objects in spacetime to attract each other, what are those force particles traveling across? Spacetime, just like all other quantum forces. So here’s the question: After you have defined your gravity-like, spin-2 graviton based, ant-swarm style quantum force on top of that spacetime… what happens if you go ahead and bend the underlying spacetime fabric anyway? The answer is oddy simple. General relativity tells us without equivocation and in exquisite detail that if you bend that space, you will have created a second gravity force, one that exists in addition to and on top of the quantum one. Or much more accurately: Underneath the quantum version, since like all of the other forces in the Standard Model this swarm-like quantum version of a gravity must ride on top of spacetime. The ant swarm simply must have a path, some kind of metric space, over which it can swarm, at least if it is defined in the same fashion as the other forces of the Standard Model. The bottom line is this: The most likely reason why all quantum models of gravity have failed, at least so far, is simply because they failed to notice the hidden redundancy buried within them: You cannot have a swarm-like quantum gravity force until you first define, either directly or implicitly, some kind of nicely smooth spacetime manifold over which that force can operate. The attempt to create quantum gravity was doomed to failure before it began, because it never truly attempted to understand what spacetime is. And there is your answer, as sadly incomplete as it is, for what will be needed to achieve genuine unification of General Relativity and Quantum Theory: We need a deeper, more profound theory of what space and time are. It’s not gravity that went wrong, or general relativity,but the red herring of attempting to create a gravity-like force that could never have been anything more than a pale imitation of true gravity. This new theory of “what is spacetime itself” will need to be more fundamental than quantum theory, as heretical as it sounds, since all quantum models at one level or another begin with spacetime as an assumption.

Loved the exit transition. That was awesome. Again, there is a way to prove if parallel universe exits. If new universes are created with 'every' decision (which i disagree with. They only diverge on massive events.) then as stated the electron is NOT created in each new universe. It has to pop out of our existence, pop into another to maintain that universe, then pop into another, and another, and another, then back to ours. Therefore, the amount of time an electron is missing should increase, and should be measurable. Unless Stephen King's The Langoliers is the correct idea, and as our Universe moves into the past........ (Worst movie ever). But Im just a nobody.

To take it a step further, I myself (MY consciousness alone) may be the sole protagonist, the "viewpoint" chosen by the Creator to focus on for... who knows what? - where only MY consciousness matters in this simulation, and you all are just NPCs coded to flesh out MY observations, perceptions, and interactions. As an avatar enmeshed in the perceived reality of the sim, how could I ever know if all your consciousness really exists or not? The only thing I know is that MY consciousness exists... avatar or not. This is my opinion, and I'm sticking with it! Prove me wrong, I dare 'ya. :)

When universes collide, we see ghosts. They enter our universe for a fraction of second and go away. This is just my thought and could be wrong.

Plus, they are just the ones who were dead here and alive in other universes. Hence, we can't catch them but when priests tell them to go to the light, they realise that they have entered the incorrect universe and go away.

The parameters of our current universe are nurturing to us only to the point where we are ready to leave it. I believe we exist to emerge from our reality. Some might say the after life is just that, however, I believe at one point we will have become so developed and matured as specie that we will "tear" a gateway into another "universe" with its own parameters which will be home to our next stage of development as a specie. Think of it as ranks in a game or sport. The more you improve and develop the closer you get to the next stage of your evolution. The only difference being the framework in which our existence evolves in. It is our unrecognized goal to truly grow and emerge from our reality. Life is beyond just our universe :) Ps. Thank you for your truly thought provoking content. It not only tackles our current scientific understanding, but also encourages deeper more philosophical ways of thinking.

Well... I definitely agree about the Copenhagen interpretation... But I really don't know about the many worlds interpretation either. I still think it's something much simpler... We just can't "see" yet (technologically speaking). But who knows.

I think when you are new to a subject ( quantum computing or whatever ) you get results that are unconventional then as you learn the rules of your universe ( or the most produced outcomes ) you get results that are more of the usual outcome

Sorry but you say Copenhagen interpretation is not providing details on when the observer might cause the collapse of the wave function (should the observer be conscious? Should be big? Etc). And I buy this critic. But don't you think many worlds is escaping similar questions as well? Like: under which conditions the branching happens? Any time a conscious observer observes? Anytime something can swipe left or right? Anytime a decision can be taken? When?? What makes me harder to believe many world is that if we keep it literally, any single electron can spin left or right. So, for each electron we have at least 2 worlds. So, for a single person 0.001 second of life, we might have 100000 worlds branches. Does that make sense?

In fact, as is shown by the success of the path integral of Feynman, the quantum world is not just constantly splitting along various paths but also constantly merging various paths. One one side, it is a question of decoherence ; on the other side, it is a question of fuzzyness and resonance. This concept was anticipated long ago by Philip K. Dick in his novel «The Man in the High Castle», published in 1962.

Gravity and Quantum Theory are of such many magnitudes of difference in force apart from each other that we have no physical means to conduct an experiment to observe that unification short of leveraging the amount of energy that which would rival the initial singularity (big bang) of our universe itself.......which is absurd to assume we could create that let alone survive such an experiment ........however, within a Black hole we might be able to discover an observation demonstrating the symmetry of those forces........

part one: sorry for the length of this and i have to post it in three parts because of youtube comment character limits and my utter failure to be able to be concise due to my severe dyspraxia which affects thought organisation. general relativity is the more complete theory as it is able to express spacetime, which is more fundamental than the standard model or the quantum fields that give rise to it. Everything including the fields all oscillating and being locally excited into stable particles sits on a smooth manifold, a membrane like minkowski-einstein spacetime structure. Gravity is a topological force, it is a geodesic curve, it reveals the fundamental grand geometry behind what everything in the universe 'sits on top of'. gravity is-i curve space-time. you can't quantise that. but with the photoelectric effect einstein did quantise light. but he found space to be expressed as a non quantised geometry, because that's what the physics was saying. After 7 billion years of travel, high and low energy photons arrived at NASA's Fermi spacecraft a mere 900ms apart, which is like racing a speedboat one through water one through molasses and having them arrive at the same time. which just doesnt happen. so it concludes space is smooth and continuous-just as einstein maintained, not foamy enough to interfere with gamma waves speed compared to lower energy photons. Because Einstein predicted all electromagnetic waves travel at the ever constant speed of light. I agree with sean caroll on leaning towards everitt's relative state interpretation-the universal wavefunction, which inferred the later MWI. it is faithful completely to the schrodinger equation, so i favour it. however i dispute that quantum mechanics or the standard model is more complete than general relativity. the standard model has about four massive problems-doesnt provide or explain the fundamental constants that have to be manually imputed to provide precise values for particles, doesnt explain asymmetry between matter and antimatter, nor dark matter, nor dark energy, and doesnt account for gravity and the latter point we are talking about here. quantum physics cant seem to produce gravity. sean carroll's approach is rather than trying to quantise gravity, start with quantum theory and look for gravity in it. but that still doesnt bring us gravity despite a hundred years of trying. The Standard Model was really based entirely on Special Relativity, which is not just compatible with quantum theory but very quickly became an integral part of it. consider though they still require us to put in the fundamental constants manually that determine the specific values of particle properties,of all the forces apart from gravity. all the leptons, quarks and bosons and their interactions are derived from quantum field theory-for each of the forces and particles of the standard model, except gravity, dark energy. dark matter and the fundamental constants that have to be manually imputed to produce the specific values of all the three types of particles, nor does it explain the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry, or the reasons behind the values of our fundamental constants. it doesn't produce the fourth fundamental force-gravity, because gravity is not a force, and space-time and general relativity are purely geometrical. so we get from it six quarks and antiquarks with three colors each, 3 charged leptons and antileptons, 3 neutrinos and antineutrinos,8 massless gluons,3 weak bosons,1 massless photon, and 1 Higgs boson. these quantum fields of low energy may or may not be zero and even what we think of as empty space is essentially a vacuum of quantum foam which oscillates at different energy values,that permeate all of space Note that only general relativistic quantum mechanics managed to predict anti-matter-which paul dirac successfully combined. And this is determined by the specific mathematical structure - SU(3) × SU(2) × U(1) - that underlies the Standard Model. This is a gauge quantum field theory specifically. Each particle corresponds to the fundamental quantum fields of the Universe all excited in a particular way. But we know that in the quantum Universe, we have to replace particles with wavefunctions, which are a probabilistic set of parameters that replace classical quantities like "position" or "momentum."

This sounds a like failed physcist juggling epicycles to maintain a failed mathematical hypothesis which bears no resemblance to the real physical world. What next? More epicycles? Epicycles within epicycles? Consensus? WTF, since when is physical phenomena something to decided by voting?
