I think you need to look at the Luiton LT-316. Low power, USB rechargeable, 16 channel, and programmable. Just my thoughts, program the frs channels, then find one or two uhf business band channels in your area that are not used by local businesses. Uses those channels as your talk around channels.
@2326TX
@2326TX 2 года назад
P.S. Dont use white dot, black dot, or orange dot. Those correspond to 16, 18, & 20 on gmrs. We have issues with the off roaders out here, they talk over us out on the pipeline and telling them to get off business band does no good. Not going to rant on that. 🙂 So, if you use a business band channel not used locally or a gmrs channel, you should have a slightly better secure channel to talk on.

I was a usmc radio operator in an artillary unit for a long time. Ran the whole plt with many different types of comms. You want to have both single and multi chargers. The singles are good to give out with a radio..so who ever you are giving the radio out to will be able to charge it themselves..if that is the situation.The multi chargers are good for the HQ, so you can charge many at once with just one plug. Some times troops bring there radios to get swapped out when they go dead. Different uses for diff situations and you want extra redundancy because chargers are finicky but very important, as you know. Alot of thought and preps and gear have to go into keeping comms up 24/7. That is why units almost always have dedicated comms guys. The question I have is does the better radio work with the multi charger? or maybe you could find one separate but I would suggest having a cpl as well as some cords. Ideally everything would be proprietary.
@Yhrim70
@Yhrim70 2 года назад
Agreed. The individual chargers are good for just that, individuals who can charge them at their own location. I had the same thought about using a multi charger for "home base". Makes it much easier to keep the radios in one place, and charge them with one cable. Especially useful if connected to a generator or solar. However _(at least from what I can find)_ it doesn't appear that they have such a charger for the RT7... although they have have them for many other radios. To bad they don't sell one separately for the RT7, or even in a kit package.

The radios are decent, but I would NEVER use equipment that uses proprietary batteries. Once the batteries are toast, you will be up the creek without a paddle. Even if you do have spares, they will only last a certain amount of charge cycles. Better to use equipment that uses batteries that are available worldwide. I've been into radios and communications gear since the mid 70's.

It might be useful to augment your radios with something a little more durable and versatile... for not a lot more money per unit, you can get a Baofang GT-3WP, which it dust proof, water resistant down to 6" ( which will take you through heavy rainfall, and has a very durable housing to protect from bumps and occasional drops. It will of course take an investment in time to learn more than you know now, but the return will be worth it. You will be able to use either a computer or from the keypad add frequencies . Although they are Ham capable, they can also be programed with FRS, GMRS, or 2meter, or 70 cm Ham freq's that give you way more versatility down the road... Let me know if you would like to either discuss some alternatives or perhaps set up a meeting to find out how to look at you comm's for the future...

Are there better radios that reach long distance? Sure. But they also have a lot of con's as well. he long distance part being one of them if you only want them to work short range, as he stated in the video. I've had FRS radios can still work up to 1.5 miles IRL. And in a community setting, this is most likely want to you need. You don't want to be broadcasting far out where people can eventually follow your signal in. Can Ham comms be useful? Yes especially when communicating with other groups or just gathering info from other hams at long distance. But you aren't going to be broadcasting a lot doing this, and most likely not on the same channels/frequencies either. Another problem is those radios are not something you can just hand to someone and them be able to use it. And elderly people aren't going to be able to use such radios either, _(unless by chance they have been using hams for many years)_ But for the needs SP1 is trying to fill in this video, ham radios do not fit the bill. However, both radio types are good to have for their own purposes and for their specific uses.

An FRS radio like this is limited to 0.5 watts output, so under perfect conditions, you might be able to transmit 1/2 mile to a mile, max. By perfect conditions, I mean no trees, hills, buildings - straight line of sight, all of these things will have an effect on your distance. For your buddy 15 miles away, look into CBs, they're fairly cheap, common, and a lot of people have an old one in their attic or garage on a shelf.

Dave, with respect, either you or a member of your community need to involve themselves in ham radio. There is so much to radio, it's almost impossible to buy radios that are custom tailored to your desires. You might want to buy radios you can attenuate down to the distance your looking for. Very few radios (plastic pack) style are going to be exactly what you need. Then there is this thing called propagation. At some times any radio can be heard many miles away while at other times you can't hear it a block away. It's just the way the bands work. Radio probably has as much to it as your hardest prep and takes a dedicated person to know what to do. You may even end up going with wire phones stationed at certain points....no one can hear those.

No radio signals are private. It is also illegal to encrypt radio signals (if you give a damn about what the FCC says), and besides, encryption hardware is big $$$. There are "privacy codes" that come with some radios, but those only allow you to receive a signal from another radio using the same privacy code. That is to say, everyone else with a radio can still hear you, but the privacy code just blocks you from hearing them. Don't get fooled by "privacy codes," they are not private.

I have a serious question. I live in a small town, only about 5 miles wide. What is a good and tested radio that will work here in town, so I can still talk to my family, with houses and other stuff between us?

That's what I need. A radio that reaches 4 miles in very hilly terrain .

You can get one of those "FBI Style" earpiece/mics for most radios off Amazon, if you are concerned about noise discipline in a tactical situation.

use them until the first day of hostile action...Then change to a different radio, marine, cb, anything.... that will fu*k with the enemy enough...dance back and forth...the enemy isn't perfect either...just mess with their formula you dont hsve to be perfect.

I want one but worry about security aspect of using them being south of the TRUMP FREEDOM WALL. Dont want unwanted attention.

If it's not digital or lacks a encryption level, then it's a bullhorn, analog radios aren't that practical for SHTF
