Justin’s music journey is weird. He started out as an artist named Amnaeon, won Jared’s vocal contest, had a mental breakdown, deleted all of his music (he had like 3 or four albums), took a year or so off, came back, rebranded as hungry lights (hungry covers and hungry pootoos (his cover channel and comedy music channels) came later), released four albums, is in the process of writing books for all four albums, and then Max and Mike Portnoy found him for Tallah.
You're missing the most interesting part. As Hungry Lights, while Tallah was getting started; he was the first youtube i ever saw who actively went against his fanbase. He answered every single request comment with "i don't do requests", getting more and more agitated, but holding his ground. I started working online doing music shit (after working in the industry for a decade) and it was people like him, who had agency and knew how to actually deal with sheep-like, drone, npc "fans" who have a tendency to take over your life that made me ok with giving it a stab. Huge inspiration!
Ya know, I think I agree with the take on Megadeth as a whole, but at the same time Rust in Peace is easily my favorite album from any of the Big 4 bands. It's just such a perfect storm of superb musicianship and fun, catchy songwriting. Easy 10/10. Like even if you aren't a big fan of Dave's vocals, they also have that quality where I can't imagine the songs being sung by anyone else.
I totally agree. It's one of those albums where it doesn't matter what band it is, even if you cannot enjoy it subjectively, you have to admit the greatness on objective level. Songwriting and performance is top notch.
True. I would say that Megadeth is a pretty bad band overall and Dave's vocals definetely are awful, but Rust in Peace is such an outlier in their catalog. One of the best metal albums ever made.
The key to annoying Megadeth fans is to call the band MEGADEATH. And then when they say "it's not spelled with an A!" - call them MEGDETH. Works out pretty well.
Mine has to be Uroboros (Remastered) by Dir en grey. They had taken their older more chaotic sound and blended it seamlessly with elements of death, doom, black, and nu-metal to create something truly unique feeling, and this would be the general template they use going forward. This album has so much variety to it, from your brutal macabre nightmare bangers to your somewhat hopeful light rock ballads.
I appreciate Megadeth because they consistently do USO shows. It may not seem like much but for the guys overseas, it means a lot. They always have my respect for that.
@@Jerrremy Megadeth has bangers, and a lot of misses also. Holy Wars, Hangar 18, Peace Sells, Sweating Bullets, My Darkest Hour, albeit kinda memed on and cringey boomer stuff, Symphony of Destruction. God Holy Wars and Hangar 18(even if it is a little bit wankery guitar) are so good.
The best metal album of all time is Still Life by Opeth hands down. Beautiful songs, beautiful concept. If anyone reads this and hasnt heard this album in full, please give it a try
Trustkill records will forever be the label that had the guts to realease brothers keeper. The vocalist is the core equivalent to Dr Pepper. Either you love it or you hate it. And it will forever and ever be so. Amen.
@dragonballfanscantread2383i have never heard anyone say Slaughter is the weakest in atg's discography. I love it so much becaose the riffs are just perfect. Can u explain how it is OBJECTIVLY the worst atg album becaose that title should go to with fear i kiss the burning darkness coase its production is so bad
@dragonballfanscantread2383 i dont agree with that take but i kinda see where ur coming from. Yes it has rifs that are simple like blinded by fear but i think that in Slaughter they perfected theier style And ur point of predictable song structures is absolutely true, i usualy hate the normal song formula but idk it just works for that album
As a big fan of swedish metal scene my faves are mostly there: Edge of Sanity - Crimson II Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus Katatonia - Dance of December Souls Opeth - Ghost Reveries Dissection - The Somberlain.
Finn, legit question. What is "wrong" with "boomer" metal? I mean, you're using it in a negative context so I assume you personally think there's something lesser about it so I'd like to know what it is? Simply because it existed decades ago or is there something inherently lesser about the music for you? I always hear this term being used and I find it funny because if the music is somehow lesser than something newer just because it was released decades ago, then that has nothing to do with the music itself, you're just coming off trying to appeal to the younger crowds. I think there's a big reason why people still love and reference older metal bands. They fill a void that newer metal bands simply cannot replicate. Larger than life, completely original, lyrically timeless (mostly), story-telling elements, less "wall of sterile 8-bit noise" etc. So if that makes it "boomer" then so be it, there's a massive reason why these bands are still selling out stadiums and arenas 40+ years since they became a band and 20+ years since they were last "super relevant". "Boomer" music isn't even listened to by the boomers lol it's mostly by Gen-x, Millenials and now Gen-z's. Would love some clarification on what you mean by it.
Maybe I’m just reading it wrong but it just comes off as tongue in cheek to me. I’m sure Finn would admit there’s reasons that music stays relevant for decades, I mean you’d be a fool to not recognize why it’s still listened to.
@muymachopenguin4314 forsure but repeating it in most of his videos everything the topic comes up males me believe there's more to just being tongue in cheek, which is why I asked for clarification
That is true. I do get Finn's point about people often only caring about the older bands and therefore newer stuff doesn't get enough exposure. But then again, all music will be old at some point, depends also what you call old. Some call nu metal old by this point, some absolutely don't. Anyway, the best bands will be remembered decades later when you can better tell what stood the test of time. And every single era of music has some of these bands.
I agree with the Periphery take. Nolly has sold more Dingwall basses than any other bassist in metal as far as I can see, and I took a girl to a Periphery show and she liked it.
3 albums that I always tell people that are so heavy and still hold up today: Fear Factory Demanufacture Strapping Young Lad - City White Zombie - Astro Creep 2000
Those of us that love Megadeth love the crazy, sideways riffs. Usually killer, also sideways, technical drumming. I love Dave's voice. I liken it to an old Looney Tunes character. Same vibes. And everyone loves Looney Tunes
If I may attempt to explain Megadeth fandom… At least for me, part of the appeal for Megadeth, if I’m being honest, is rooting for the underdog. Mustaine’s history with Metallica if often used to ridicule him but it also is the best promoter of his music. And as a guitar nerd, Megadeth has the best guitar playing in the big 4. “It’s an acquired taste” I trained myself to tolerate and sometimes even like Mustaine’s singing. Megadeth has nerd/under-dog appeal.
Here is a bold statement, I have strong case for Periphery, not only from the songs they write, or their sound, or their musical choices but just their contribution to music as a whole down to the programs, label, …..everything….its the product of a pure successful, obsessive ambition that equates them to maybe, IMO be the greatest metal band/company in history, based on their body of work inside and out of their album work.
_City of Evil_ is incredible front to back, but Sunfyre's a fuckin real one for sure for naming "Sidewinder", and the spanish/flamenco style accoustic outro is one of my all time favorite accoustic pieces of music 🤌🏼
I still can't get over the fact that you love to joke so much about entry level metal and overrated guitar wankery, yet at the same time don't miss a chance to praise Avenged Sevenfold 😭
The thumbnail is like my personal metal/rock youtube content creator mt Rushmore lmao. I'd have to admit that I was a little late to the party with Rudy, but I found his videos a couple years ago. Dude is HILARIOUS. Such good timing with his comedy
Korn self titled (about 2 years after it came out) got me started into metal. They had so much to do with Metal staying alive it's crazy how they don't get enough credit from "real metal-heads". So did grunge music, but that's a whole other argument...
Man, you HAVE to be involved in Musician Mansion next time. Totally respect you for skipping it this time due to the baby. Family first aways. But we need you there next time! I laughed so hard at your Mazda 3 comment. I used to have one & at the time it was my dream car bc it had a 6 disc CD player... I think my pick might be The Sin & the Sentence by Trivium. I love that whole album from top to bottom, both lyrically & musically.
Between the Buried and Me - Colors. That album means a lot to me personally and the songs are just… amazing from beginning to end. Some parts your grandmother could listen to; other parts your same grandmother would make you go to church.
I saw Parkway Drive at Warped Tour back when they released "Deep Blue" Also saw Every Time I Die, Dillinger, BMTH, Whitechapel, Andrew WK, ADTR, Emmure and so many more. It was a good summer.
i am with Angel Vivaldi here, "Idols and Anchors" by PWD was the song that made me a metalcore fan and it was the first metalcore song i've ever listened. it is a good entry song for people who hasn't listened to metalcore before IMHO
I knew Dines was a poser within a few months of him breaking out, no metalhead talks about Warped Tour exclusively and no metalhead would interview those at Warped tour about metal bands as not a single actual metal band has ever played Warped tour.
with that downloading music thing: not everyone discovers music they like at the time it comes out. I'm quite young so when most of the music i like came out i didn't care about it since my taste was different or i wasn't even born. this music can still be a milestone for you.
Not a Thrash guy at all, but the consensus from massive Thrash fans is Slayer>Megadeth>Metallica>Testament>Anthrax. A lot of huge Thrash heads prefer Testament to be in the big 4 and not Anthrax, and a lot of Thrash fans prefer Megadeth over Metallica. But don’t shoot the messenger here because I’m not a Thrash fan, I’m just saying what I’ve seen the consensus of from a lot of Thrash fans.
The musicians in Megadeth are actually insanely talented. It doesn't always translate into great albums or songs, but on a technical level (especially the guitar) they can be pretty amazing. If you combined the singing of James Hetfield and the great songwriting ability of early Metallica (Kill em All through the black album) with the musicianship of Megadeth I feel like you'd have a stellar band.
Metallica has better songs than Megadeth? What a poser. Rust in Peace is not only solos. The riffs and harmonies are insane on this album. Composition wise it's pure genius, each song constructed like an opera with an opening act, buildup and finale. Dave writes one of the best lyrics in metal EVER, forging his personal experiences and political stances into powerful messages. He's not the best singer in the world, but no one comes close when it comes to sounding like pure distilled anger. Your statement says so much, because other bands write songs, while Megadeth MAKES MUSIC. Not gonna unsubscribe, because your breakdown videos are interesting, but oh man you do NOT get some stuff at all.
Killswitch Engage- Alive Or Just Breathing is my answer to this question, it was the first nu- metal album I probably listened to and was absolutely hooked by it, and it still holds up today
Oh man I forget about all that remains on a constant basis!!!! That use to be my favorite metal band!!! They had like 15 songs I was OBSESSED WITH all at the same time 😂❤
Finn, you are DEAD wrong in saying that Megadeth is the mid band out of the big 4. The thing that keeps them on top is their musical prowess, and technicality. I believe it is an oversight on your part or maybe you just don't understand technicality. Metallica = songwriting, Slayer = heaviness, Anthrax = punk AND Megadeth = Musical karate and prowess and technicality. When you say that Megadeth is Walmart Metallica, it shows a lack of musical understanding in the first place. Shame that we are hearing music opinions from a dude who does not even understand music technically.
I think you try to appeal to a younger audince(gen z)more honestly excluding all older music. Big fan but this video is a bit annoying hearing the term boomer music so much..good music is good music regarldess.
Difficult to choose a favorite album. 10/10 albums for me are Black Waltz by Avatar, Carolus Rex by Sabaton and Dark Matter by Gürschach. But I think my favorite album of all time is A7X's self titled album 🤔
Justin Bonitz main channels are Hungry Covers and Hungry Lights. I discovered him on RU-vid about 6 years ago before Tallah. That he sound great then and I think he sounds awesome now.
I got so bored of metal that I was fully into electronic by 2005 and then I heard bat country and was then introduced to Swedish death metal through A7X. Definitely a top pick.
I don't know if you or dominik want to be bored by the TLDR story, but in hindsight I think by the late 90s most metal genres were eating their own tails. I very much remember feeling that every death metal band was trying to sound like cannibal corpse (which as dominik hints, might be OK for a week...) The slow evolution away from metal was from ~'98 until Bat Country. There was more energy and evolution in the industrial/EBM/IDM scenes at that time and I was unaware of the iceberg of black metal, death metal, and it took me until ~2009 to really love and enjoy prog. Which took me taking a liking to Jazz. So some of it was the scene and some of it was just being young and uncultured ROFL. Opeth changed my life musically, them and Melechesh.
@NunyaB1s I'm curious I won't be bored it's a good story I like death metal I don't listen to it all the time I listen to more deathcore but I understand what ur saying about death metal I like different genres I can't listen to death metal all the time. I don't really listen to that sort of music like edm but I know what you mean I don't really like black metal I never got into it prog is alright jazz is decent but I don't listen to it I respect it I don't listen to thoses bands but I'm glad they changed ur life.
Rust in Peace is my favorite Metal album of all-time. It also contains my favorite solo of all-time as well (Tornado of Souls). The album is amazing from top to bottom; I do get that Dave's vocals aren't the greatest and can turn people off from Megadeth on that alone.
Van Halen might not technically be metal, but they have heavy enough riffs for me to call them metal anyway. Light up the Sky and On Fire make me wanna fight someone.
Dissillusioned is very similar to say The Baroness or even Mastodon. It's like super proggy and even jazzy in parts... but still heavy and atmospheric. HIGHLY recommended if you're a fan of those latter two bands mentioned.
