Don't forget about Rick Savage being diagnosed with Bell's Palsy, Joe Elliott contracting the mumps twice, and Vivian Campbell having some condition, which I don't recall right off hand. I actually remembered in the Def Leppard episode of "VH1: Behind The Music," they'd interviewed original guitarist Pete Willis, and he'd said that he was initially angry about being ousted from the band, due his alcoholism and that it'd affected his ability to play guitar, over time, he'd realized how badly it had gotten and was grateful that they'd stepped in, otherwise, he'd probably ended up like Steve Clark

It's bittersweet to see Rick Allen in his younger days before the loss of his limb. You'll notice that be plays "traditional" grip just like Buddy Rich. That came from the military marching drummers who had to play with their drum at an awkward angle as they marched.

According to an interview with Joe Elliot, he had a huge hole in his bathroom wall and covered it with a poster of Maryln Monroe. He said he was musing about wanting someone that you only had a photograph of. So yes, she was an influence for the song in a sense.

I was about to say the same thing, I also heard him say that Jayne Mansfield was also a similar unattainable icon, who was also a famous actress/model who died young tragically in a car accident, she also could have been an inspiration for this song. I think it was obviously a better choice to feature Marilyn Monroe, such a recognizable icon

With the video and the lyrics, how could anyone say they don’t understand what and who he’s singing about? This generation seems to constantly say ‘I Don’t Get It’ when Captain Obvious is staring them in the face. Oh look, an obsessive stalker just killed a Celebrity . . . But what’s it mean, I don’t understand?

These guy's are true legends, I'm happy to finally see them inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame by none other than queen founder brian may, who they have performed with many times, and are great fans. They have crossed genres a bit over the years, and are very 70s influenced , mott the Hoople, t-rex, david bowie, on and on. They've been around since 1977, and have sold over 100 million records. On their 2022 album " diamond star halos " they even do a song with allison krauss, a famous blue grass singer who is a big def leppard fan. It's called "this guitar " not usually a blue grass fan, but it's fantastic, my 82 year old mother is a blue grass fan, and loves her music, i played it to her, she absolutely loved it. I said, "guess who's singing with her? " i finally told her it was def Leppard, she had told me back in 1981 that i was listening to pure filth, it was a pretty nasty song called " let it go" from high and dry. She took the album right off the turntable and never gave it back, it was fortunately for me that i also had the cassette in my car!

This is the original early eighties hard rock/hair metal anthem. For a teenager in the Mid West without MTV Def Leppard and Quiet Riot was my introduction to this kind of music. In 1983 new wave was still super popular. There was a show called Friday Night Videos, so original, and that was my one hour a week to see music videos. Suddenly one night in between Duran Duran and Culture Club Def Leppard comes on with, it was either Rock of Ages or Rock Rock Til You Drop, with this sound that goes back to the seventies hard rock bands I already loved. Besides the sound though they had the look. They had a story like a mini movie. They had production in their live set. It was just wild. Monday at school it's all we were talking about. Besides a KISS video from the seventies this was the biggest thing to happen to rock music. They were the biggest band in the world then tragedy hit. Rick's accident and some other things took them out of most of eighties explosion of hair. Motley Crue and Ratt took that spotlight and the crown for a while. Then at a point when the market was so saturated with clones and a lot of garbage bands Def Leppard came back with the most innovative album we had heard and they were back on top again. The difference in sound from Pyromania to Hysteria is unbelievable. It's not just a natural progression in the music it's a dare devil jump over a canyon.

Pyromania was probably Def Leppard's best album. It really fits the way rock was changing in the early 80's, kind of the forerunner of other groups like Bon Jovi, Poison and others in the mid to late 80's. As others have said its about wanting something you can't have and you only have a photograph. You could also say its about the danger of being famous and having over zealous fans that border on stalking. This is just after Dorthy Stratten's murder by her jealous husband, and near the time of Dommonique Dunn from the movie Poltergeist murder by a jealous boyfriend and not long before the murder of Rebecca Schafer from the show My Sister Sam. I know some are after the song came out, just using as a reference. Its open to interpretation as to which way it is. Great reaction!

Rick Allen on drums, before the car accident that lost his arm in 1985 at the age of 22. He joined the band at 15 in 1978. Steve Clark wrote most of their music, their rhythm guitarist. He lasted through Hysteria and wrote most of that one too but sadly passed from alcoholism.

By the way Def Leop, Pat Benatar ect saved MTV it almost went off the air after it started, also MJ was the first black artist featured paving the way for so many others.

This is my favorite Def Leppard song. “Pyromania” came out my freshman year in college so we listened to it nonstop. It’s a great album. “Rock of Ages” must be next!

Pyromania was the second best selling album of 1983 behind a little known album by Michael Jackson called Thriller.

Master level rock anthems from these guys. (I think the video detracts from the music a bit, but this was published in the early years of MTV where every song had to have a video with it. Frankly, I enjoyed the music experience without needing a video.) Music to rock out to!

The Pyromania album was released in 1983,so that may be the main reason for the audio being low.
