Do I need TWO Hearing Aids or Only ONE? Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses why two hearing aids are almost always better than one.

Back in the day, well before my time as an audiologist, it used to be considered unethical to fit someone with bilateral hearing loss, with two hearing aids. Fortunately, research prevailed and proved that 2 hearing aids are almost always better than 1. This is for a variety of reasons.
1. Reduced hearing difficulty on both sides - If you have a hearing loss in two ears, and you only have a hearing aid in one ear, you will always have to orient your aided ear towards the person talking to you. This may not seem like a big deal until you become exhausted or find yourself in a situation where you can't control which direction sound is coming from.
2. Binaural Summation - This is the increased perception of loudness when wearing 2 hearing aids. This allows your hearing care provider to reduce the prescription for your hearing loss, making it easier to hit prescriptive targets, often resulting in better speech clarity as well.
3. Better speech understanding in calm situations - When we test Word Recognition Scores in individual ears, and these scores are below 100%, we almost always see an increase in scores when both ears are tested together. This means that when both ears participate in a task, you can understand speech more clearly, because your brain has more information to work with.
4. Better Sound Localization - Your ability to determine where sound is coming from has to do with the timing difference between when a sound is heard by one ear and then heard by the other ear. It is possible that with only one aided ear, you may have difficulty identifying where sounds are coming from.
5. Binaural Squelch - This is when your brain uses information from both ears to determine which ear has the better Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). The bigger the SNR, the better you will be able to hear in background noise. Two hearing aids give your brain more information that is ear dependent so it can figure out which side to focus on.
However, there are some situations where two hearing aids are NOT better than one.
1. If you have normal hearing in one ear - In this case, you would only need to amplify the opposite ear, assuming it has an aidable hearing loss.
AND
2. If you have Single Sided Deafness (SSD) - In this case, you may do better with a CROS, BiCROS, AmpCROS, or Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA). Check out my SSD video here:
• Single Sided Deafness ...
At the end of the day, two hearing aids will always cost more than one, but the benefits should significantly outweigh the cost as long as your hearing care professional follows Best Practices: • What are Hearing Aid B...

Two. Most hearing aids work together and the localisation of noises will be better. It's also harder to adjust to 1 hearing aid because people tend to compare the aided side to the non-aided side.

I have two because I have asymmetrical hearing loss. I have greater loss in the left ear than the right and having two hearing aids enables me to have each one set to the correct upper Hz settings so I can understand speech again. Now, I can understand what people are saying and not be excluded from group conversations.

What if one side is very bad and a hearing aid is not really helping?

You give great information. By the way, I also like the way you speak loud enough for listening, don't waste time telling us to like, subscribe and request notifications. We all know to do that.

Thanks Sylvi. You'd be surprised at how many people do NOT know to like and subscribe. 😬

2 hearing aids with one open dome and one closed is what is working fine with me. Some kind of voices are better heard with open and others are better with closed I switch between the ear with closed and open one every week Only thing is that I know the programming differ between open and closed but I cannot reprogram them every week so I programmed them using the open fit and kinda live with that Nothing else worked good with me in the last 5 years but this approach

TIL why I can never tell where sound is coming from and always get hella confused when someone tries to get my attention 😳 my left ear has always been significantly better than my right. A 5 minute video answered a 35 year problem. Definitely gonna take both ears seriously going forward. Thanks!

I totally agree on this one. When I was first recommended wearing hearing aids, my vocational rehabiltation counsel wanted me to gt one hearing aid. I couldn't handle wearing just one. So I got another one. It was so much better.

I didn’t get 2 hearing aids until my late 20s and I wish I had 2 when I was younger

I've always needed 2 hearing aids. Their have been times one of the aids needed to be fixed, and I only had one aid till the aid was fixed. It made it very difficult to hear, and my understanding went way down. With only about 3% of hearing left, I'm not able to know were sound is coming from. Must be very careful crossing the street, and gave up driving completely. But able to hold a conversation and talk on the phone with a speaker.

Anyone have an issue where when you sniff the amplitude of your hearing goes down for a full second or so? This is the amplitude of my actual hearing. Not the amplitude of my hearing aid. This happens even when my hearing aids are out. Volume literally goes down in my hearing in my left ear when I sniff.

Ive only had my phonak marvel r for 1 and a half weeks and it's getting me down. I have a mild hearing loss in my left ear which is causing me issues at work as a bus driver as my passengers speak to my on my left(I'm in the UK) and I found myself having to keep asking people to repeat themselves, particularly children (mainly girls) and some women with "softer" voices. I visited and audiologist and has a test which showed I have a mild loss of hearing in my left ear. They referred me to my GP as there was concern with me having a difference between my ears. I'm still waiting to even see my gp. I was advised to try a hearing aid in my left ear and I decided on the marvel r as it was the cheapest ric that was rechargeable. This is fitted with an open dome so I can still use my natural hearing. So far I'm finding its having little if any improvement on me being able to hear speech and all I'm finding being amplified it's all the rattles and noises of the bus. I'm also finding it really annoying where it is amplifying someone on the TV and keeps randomly cutting off. Also constant ly makes a dull white noise sound and sometimes it gets louder as if it's purposely trying to find something to amplify. Is this all normal. I'm feeling as if on my appointment on Monday I'm just going to jack it all in.

bluetideuk they can take some getting used to! But not all hearing aids are created equally and not all manage background noise very well. Your audiologist may be able to adjust things to manage it better so worth asking! I have Oticon Opn1 PP hearing aids and find that they manage background noise soooo much better than the NHS ones I had before (also Oticon - spirit synergy model) and the Starkey ones I have tried. I think it can take some trial and error before finding the ones that suit you

@@kathyattwood2165 thanks for the reply. I have been told to take a list to my appointment. I'm hoping an improvement can be made. It's allot of money being spent out and it's not exactly something I can afford to throw down the drain.

bluetideuk sadly one of the reasons I think going with NHS first is a good idea (as you can try them out and see what works). Your audiologist should be able to sort them out for you though. In all honestly though, it took me at least 6 months to start to get used to wearing them when I first got mine x

@@kathyattwood2165 I've been looking at the different levels of the the marvel mine is only the 30 (the lowest performance level) I'm wondering if this will be holding me back. It's taken me near 2 months of waiting just for a gp appointment which isn't until the end of this month.

Dr. Cliff, love the video's. Can you give me an easy explanation between a Class I hearing aid vs a Class II hearing aid?

Great video really helpful thank you! My dad is 83 yrs old and have a similar problem to both ears (close to 50) but the one is slightly better than the other. He is thinking about ordering hearing aid only on the one side that is slightly better than the other, due to not trying any hearing aids before, he is old enough now and he is afraid he will not like them + because of the high cost of having in both ears! Lol. What do you think i shall advise him?

I have main hearing loss in my left ear and a tiny bit in my right but the uncommon thing is it’s harder for me to hear low pitch sounds whereas high pitch sounds I can hear fine, have you ever come across a condition like this becuase in my ent doctor hasn’t seen a case like this before but I’ve done a nerves test and it’s come back saying my nerves aren’t reacting to sounds, I’m in the uk so I wonder is there anything out there that’s similar to my condition?
